At last Monday night’s regular City Council meeting, the Council heard from Mayor Beam during his comments section of the meeting about a couple of city projects that are either finished or almost done, one being Stroupe Park (finished) and the back alleyway on the north side of Main Street’s businesses (almost finished, or nearly complete). He also noted

what a success this year’s Independence Day celebration at Rudisill Stadium was, saying it was “a tremendous success.” “I was told, and saw for myself in some cases, that we had about 8 to 10,000 in attendance. We want to especially thank Gaston County Schools for allowing the use of Rudisill Stadium and I personally want to thank the Cherryville Fire and Police Departments for what they did to make this a successful experience, and I want to thank all of the city staff and employees as well for all their hard work.” Next up was Mr. Glenn Bratton, of Dallas, N.C., who is running for the Gaston County Board of Education, Dalla Township position

Lincoln County woman missing for eight years It’s been eight years since Toasha Nicole Rice, also known as Nikki Green on her Facebook page, left a friend’s home on Eaker Rd. Cherryville, got into a black four-door sedan with an unidentified white woman and vanished. That was on May 26, 2014 and she has not been seen since. Over the years Lincoln County Sheriff’s detectives have interviewed family members and people she was known to associate with but no one has been able to provide creditable information about the missing woman. In the months after Toasha went missing, officers used a K-9 search team in a large wooded

hausted with no signs of the woman. Sheriff’s detectives are seeking new clues into the woman’s disappearance. Toasha is a white female and was 27 years old when she disappeared. She is five feetsix inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. Cherryville’s W. Blaine Beam Intermediate – home of the Falcons – has a new captain at the helm of the ship, or chief Falcon, if you will, in the person of principal, Joshua White. He is quick to tell you he is looking forward to the start of school, which is Wednesday, Aug. 17, so he can meet some of the students and introduce himself. Mr. White is a Cherryville native, and admits becoming an education professional was not his first choice, originally, for

a profession, so far as he was concerned at the time, way back in his high school days. “If you would have told me back then that I would come back here as a principal, I would’ve definitely laughed at you (and, he added, so would his teachers)!” Joshua said he grew up on Sellerstown Road and Academy Street before graduating from Cherryville High in 2005. He is married to his wife, Betsy (11 years) and they have a 5-year-old daughter, Kassie, who he noted “… starts kindergarten this August.” The couple still reside in Gastonia, he said. He continued, “After graduating from CHS, I ended up at UNC-Charlotte majoring in finance and

banking. While on a Summer mission trip where I got to teach and coach, I felt led to (the field of) education so I changed my major when I got back home and never looked back. I finished at Charlotte with a degree in history and education.” White said he began his educational career in Gaston County Schools as a teacher assistant at Lingerfeldt Elementary. “That really prepared me to have my own classroom, and in 2013, I began teaching history and coaching football, basketball, and baseball at Southwest Middle School in Gastonia. In 2018, I began as an assistant principal at Southwest and remained there for four years before being appointed principal at W.B. See WHITE, Page 9

Vickie Jean Randall CHERRYVILLE – Vickie Jean Brown Randall, 72, of Cherryville, passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at Peak Resources, Cherryville. She was born Sept. 5, 1949 in Spartanburg County, S.C., to the late Garland Odell and Desmer Wright Brown. Vickie was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was a 1968 graduate of Cherryville High School where she enjoyed softball and won Homecoming Queen. In 1981 she opened “Vickie’s Grill” where she loved to serve the community through great food and friendship. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Ted Brown; and sister-in-law, Dianne Brown. Survivors include her son

Mountain Street. The responding officer said he was dispatched to Mountain and Old Post in reference to an accident with no apparent injuries. When he arrived, he stated he was almost hit by a vehicle pulling out of Old Post onto S. Mountain Street and had to take evasive actions to prevent an accident. Once stopped, he talked with Ms. Brackett who said she was traveling north on S. Mountain St., when she slowed to turn left onto Old Post Road. While starting her turn her window exploded. The R.O. then talked to Ms. Turner who said she was traveling north on S. Mountain St., when she saw the other driver with a right turn signal on, so she said she went left to go around Ms. Brackett when Ms. Brackett suddenly turned left, causing Ms. Turner to hit Ms. Brackett’s vehicle. Sergeant W. Bennett talked with the two witnesses who said they were behind Ms. Turner and didn’t see any turn signal and saw the Turner vehicle move over to the left trying to pass when the Brackett vehicle turned left. No injuries reported. Est. damages to the

All injured parties treated at the scene by GEMS. The Diakolios vehicle was towed to McDaniel’s Towing by McDaniel’s Towing. The Williams vehicle was towed to Shelby Towing by Shelby Towing. In a recent media release, Gaston County Government has reported it is continuing to work on the issue of homelessness in the community, announcing on July 14 a $100,000 grant to VFW Post 9337. VFW Post 9337 Commander Charles McGinnis said the Post is committed to providing financial assistance to help veterans who are experiencing homelessness or are in danger of becoming homeless. The money can be used for housing-related expenses, including rent, utilities, hotel stays or mortgage payment assistance. McGinnis said food assistance is also part of the program. “We are excited about

On a lovely Tuesday evening, a small group of adventurous patrons began by choosing a bottle, paint colors, and brushes, then let their imaginations take over. For the first three weeks of the summer, teens were able to request a Tiny Art kit to take home. The kits included a 4x4 canvas, a brush, and small pots of acrylic paint. Wait, only now do I see how He is looking at her. Not with lust… or wanting. I see in his eyes compassion. Yes, I’ve seen it before. Like my mother when I was a child or my father when he spoke of God’s love for His people and how he prayed that I, his son, might know of it one day. And the look of my own loving wife, Anna, when she gave birth to our only child. I’ve seen that look of compassion and yet, somehow it is revealed to me that His

compassion is far greater than any I have ever witnessed with these Judean eyes. Only now do I seem to understand. He looks at her as one who has a longing to be accepted…not chastised for the life she has been living. She is wanting to be acknowledged, not judged for her choices… choices that have embedded themselves into a lifestyle that is not easily changed nor one easy to escape from. She yearns to be acknowledged as a person of worth. And He is just looking at her and what a penetrating look! I believe with my whole being that grace is being imparted and not by a single word spoken! Just His intimate glance…

such a gaze would move me to leave the darkness of my own life behind… such unspoken truth would make me dare to breath the fresh pure air He offers. Look! The symbol of her trade…the alabaster container which holds the mark of harlotry… she has broken it…and offered the expensive contents to Him. She has given Him her mistakes…her misdeeds… her lowliness of life… Miracle? Yes, I have seen my miracle this evening…but more, I experienced a miracle too. Surely, this is the Son of God.

Releasing People Cherryville Area (3rd Part of “Freedom” series) Have you ever had a great morning until a certain person walked into the room? When they left you felt like you had been rolled over by a 18 wheeler - or you became angry, tired, or exasperated. As much as we love our family and friends, sometimes people are draining, toxic, or DANYALE PATTERSON abusive. Sometimes people don’t value or respect others, including themselves. How do we deal with them? We confront them in love, but if they won’t listen to us, we may need to distance ourselves while we continue to pray for them in order to keep the peace. I have a brother that was a drug addict for many years. He stole from our parents and made a lot of bad choices. One time he tried to attack our father. My father man-handled him quickly, and in seconds he was on the ground in a headlock. My father told him that he better not ever do that again, and that as long as he was using drugs, he could not come to our home. That was hard to do because we loved him so much, but I am proud that my father wasn’t afraid to stand up to him. In that situation, my father chose peace for our family rather than allowing my brother to constantly disrupt our lives with foolishness. Throughout the years, we continued to pray for him and eventually he stopped using drugs! Sometimes we think that we can change people. Yes, we can influence people, but we can’t make them do the right thing. We should never try to control people, but love them, pray for them, and be at peace with them. Sometimes you have to let them go or distance yourself from them, especially if you have children. It’s not good for anyone to be around constant traumatic environments and destructive behaviors. In the bible, Abraham demonstrated this when he separated himself from his nephew Lot because of the constant bickering between his crew and Lot’s crew. Genesis 13:8-9 (NIV) states: “So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father, I am hurting from this destructive person that has been in my life. I don’t like what they have done to me, but I choose to forgive them. I release them to you. Help me to no longer be in bondage to this person. Lord, I ask for healing and restoration of my broken heart. You created this person. You know their thoughts and their heart. I ask you to take the blinders from their eyes and remove the darkness from their soul that’s causing them to act this way. Post 100 wins one against Gaston Braves last Friday night Braves lead best-of-seven semifinals series so far by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The number two team in the Area IV Eastern Division, the Gaston Braves, has a one game lead on the Western Division Area IV team, Post 100, as both teams headed into the remainder of the July 15 through 17 weekend semifinals. In wrapping up their quarterfinals matchups, Post 100 won their remaining two games against Matthews Post 235 last week, 3-1 and 9-6, respectively. In the 3-1 win, played at Fraley Field on July 10, Post 100’s starting pitcher Zane Brockman, a Kings Mountain High product, got the win, going five innings, giving up two hits and allowing no runs. Noah Huss followed Brockman, pitching an inning and giving up a hit. He was followed in turn by Landon Hahn, who also pitched one inning and got the save. Hahn gave up one hit but also allowed no runs. Brockman helped himself going 1-3; Ashton Pope was 2-3, with a tworun home run in the first inning. Other hitters were Cole Irby (1-3); Kanon Willis (1-3); Jacob Hamrick (2-3); and Collin Robinson (1-1). Post 100 scored their 3 runs off of 8 hits with all runs coming in the first and third innings. In the last game against Post 235, played away on July 11, the Cherryville men won by a score of 9-6. The winning pitcher was Kanon Willis. Will Blackburn was the starter and he walked two batters. Willis came in and

struck out two batters and walked one. Colin Huss pitched, striking out one batter and walking one. Ashton Pope finished out the game, striking out six batters and walking three. The Legion seniors got their nine runs off of eight hits. On Thursday, July 14, the Post 100 seniors started their semifinal best four of seven series with the Post 144/266 Gaston Braves. The Braves won that first matchup at Fraley Field, 0-4. Post 100 starter Joseph Webb struck out four Braves batters. Chase Miller followed Webb on the mound and he struck out three batters and walked one in the loss. Only three Post 100 batters had base hits (Will Fowler, Will Blackburn, and Collin Robinson). Landon Hahn was walked; Ashton Pope got on base twice due to errors; Cole Irby got on base also due to an error; and Reid Stroupe also was walked twice. Robinson also got on base due to an error by the Braves. In Game Two of this series, played at South Point High School on Friday, July 15, the Braves won their second in a row 3-2. The Post 100 men returned to Fraley Field Saturday, July 16 for Game Three of the semi’s and won by a score of 2-1 over the Braves. The starter for Coach Bob Reynolds, who is now in his 29th year of coaching Post 100, was Ashton Pope, who struck out five batters and walked two. Pope was followed in the mound duties by Kanon Willis who struck out one Braves batter and walked one. Getting base hits were Landon Hahn, Zane Brockman (also an RBI), and Cole Irby. Hahn got

Additionally, catcher Reid Stroupe and second baseman Collin Robinson were walked. The Post 100 men got their two runs off of three hits. Post 100 is 12-2 in the Division; 17-10 overall, and is currently 4-2 in the Area IV playoffs. July 14-20 Area IV semifinals (best-of-7) No. 1 West: Cherryville vs. No. 2 East: Gaston Braves Game 4 was scheduled to be played at South Point HS, Sunday, July 17, Game 5 was scheduled for Monday, July 18 at Cherryville; Game 6 was scheduled for Tuesday, July 19 at South Point; and Game 7 is scheduled for Wednesday, July 20 at Cherryville’s Fraley Field/Memorial Stadium. The Area IV final is scheduled for July 21-23, times to be announced later, and the N.C. State Tournament at Campbell, is slated for July 26-30.

Mr. Page took the podium and said what a privilege and a blessing it is for him to be back home and to be able to speak at the meeting. “There is a lot of change going on county-wide,” he said, adding that he is “…excited to join a distinguished line of service here in Cherryville.” He was referring to how various members of his family have served and are serving, the City of Cherryville as well as Gaston County, in various offices. Travis continued, “Public

He continued, “As your DA, there needs to be a little bit of humility in what I do, and so, when I became the DA, I met with law enforcement officials in the county as one of the first things I did when I took the job.” Page said he wanted to get their assessment on how things were going for them and their departments and to let them know he was there for them. Mayor Beam then recognized the following departments for receiving NCDOL Certificates of Safety Achievement awards. These awards are given in recognition of the outstanding safety and health efforts “…resulting in the substantial reduction of injuries and illnesses and the promotion of safer working conditions in 2022” for the recipient(s), noted Mayor Beam. City Manager Brian Dalton accepted the award from Mayor Beam for the City of Cherryville’s First Year Gold certificate. Accepting for the City of Cherryville Public Utilities Department was Brandon Abernathy, who received their First Year Gold certificate. Chief Jason Wofford accepted an NCDOL plaque from the mayor for the 10th consecutive year (2021) for outstanding work in accident prevention. Council also heard about the Certificate of Sufficiency, certified by City Clerk Paige H. Green, CMC, NCCMC, regarding her certifying the petition for the voluntary annexation of contiguous area of property located on Requa Road as being sufficient pursuant to NCGS section 160A31.

Council also heard from Planning and Zoning Director Alex Blackburn regarding public hearings to be set for rezoning and annexation of the portion of land on Requa Rd.; on a proposed text amendment for building design standards; and a text amendment for an RV park.

How to Find and Claim Your Family’s Forgotten Assets Dear Savvy Senior, A while back I read an article about some online tools that can help people search for lost or forgotten money left behind by their deceased relatives, but I’ve misplaced it. Can you help me with this? My mom, who passed away in January, was always bad about keeping up with her money, so I’m wondering if there was anything she left behind. Searching Son Dear Searching, Forgotten or lost money is actually very common in the United States. According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, there are literally billions of dollars in unclaimed funds sitting in state treasuries and other agencies just waiting to be found. These unclaimed funds are from accounts that are inactive or whose owners, or their heirs, cannot be located. Unclaimed funds can include things like lost or forgotten saving or checking accounts, stocks, utility security deposits, tax refunds, life insurance policy proceeds, uncashed dividend checks, matured savings

bonds and much more. This typically happens because of a change of address (the owner moved), a name change (the owner got married or divorced), or the owner dies, and the estate was unaware of the money or the heirs could not be located. By law, companies and financial institutions that can’t find the owner or their next of kin within two to five years must turn the property over to the state where it’s held indefinitely. Where to Search About 10 percent of all Americans have some unclaimed money out there waiting to be found, so it’s very possible your mother had some too. To start your search, go to Unclaimed.org, which has links to all state programs that will let you do a state benefits search online for free. Or you can do a multi-state search in 39 states at MissingMoney.com. Be sure to check every state in which your mother lived, worked or did business. Also, make sure to check under your mom’s maiden name, and if she had a frequently misspelled

name, search those misspellings too. Using her first initial and her last name is also encouraged to make sure everything comes up. Every state can tell you immediately if your mom has some unclaimed money, as well as how to go about collecting it. Look Here Too In addition to state treasuries, here are some other resources that can help you look for unclaimed money that may have been overlooked. Forgotten retirement benefits: To search for lost or forgotten 401(k) funds your mom may have left behind with an old employer, use the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits at UnclaimedRetirementBenefits.com. Or to search for lost pension benefits, use the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation trusteed plan search tool at PBGC. gov/search-trusteed-plans. Lost life insurance: To track down a lost or forgotten life insurance policy, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, an insurance regu-

latory support organization, offers a free policy locator service at https:// eapps.naic.org/life-policy-locator. Unredeemed savings bonds: It’s very common for people to lose track of U.S. saving bonds because they are often given to children as gifts, then forgotten before the bonds reach maturity. To find out if your mom had any, the U.S. Department of the Treasury provides an online search tool at TreasuryHunt.gov for finding matured, uncashed savings bonds over 30 years old and no longer earning interest. Federal tax refunds: Each year thousands of refund checks totaling millions of dollars are returned to the IRS by the post office.
