by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
According to a media release from CaroMont Health, Gastonia, at a meeting this past month (November), the medical organization’s Board of Directors appointed Cherryville native Jeff Cash to the position of Chair.
As per the release, “Previously Vice Chair, Mr. Cash will now lead the volunteer Board in providing corporate governance, strategic guidance and fiduciary oversight for the health system and its entities.” Mr. Cash was appointed to the Board of Directors on Nov. 14, 2022, it was further noted.
“Mr. Cash has devoted countless hours in service to CaroMont Health – its leaders, employees and
patients,” said Chris Peek, President and Chief Executive Officer for CaroMont Health. “His dedication to the mission of CaroMont Health and his contributions to the Board have helped ensure the health system remains focused on providing exceptional healthcare to patients across our community – today and well into the future.”

2022’s Cherryville Christmas Parade one of the largest ever
by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info
Once again, a longer, larger, chock full of fun 2022 Cherryville Christmas Parade made for a wonderful Saturday morning on Dec. 10 as a huge crowd of folks came out, lining Main Street, to start the holiday season right.
And nobody – smalltown-wise – does holidays any better than the folks at Cherryville Chamber of Commerce and the City of Cherryville (Where Life Blossoms), whether it’s a summer holiday festival or this season’s favorite, the Annual Cherryville Christmas Parade.
This year’s Grand Marshal was CHS’ Lee Roy Montgomery, who was all smiles and waved to everyone shouting out, “Merry Christmas!”, greeting all those who turned out on Saturday, Dec. 10, braving chilly, overcast weather, to enjoy the bright floats and to get a glimpse of Santa himself! It really was beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Cherryville’s Downtown Director David Day said they had “…more than 15 craft vendors and many local res-
idents,” all who enjoyed the recent second annual Holiday Market and Small Business Saturday in Cherryville’s Mini Park on Nov. 26.
Said Mr. Day, “We had a steady flow all day. We saw several hundred shoppers visit our craft booths and many of our downtown merchants. It was a great success.”
Day also noted that in addition to the local crafters selling homemade crafts and food, Manantial Mexican Restaurant provided their food truck.

The new building, all 7,600 square feet of it, is state-ofthe-art in medical care and staffed by caring health care professionals with the needs of the citizens of Cherryville foremost in their hearts and minds.
It was noted at the ribbon cutting that, in partnership with the City of Cherryville and the Cherryville Chamber of Commerce, CaroMont Health hosted the “… ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of CaroMont Family Medicine and CaroMont Urgent Care in Cherryville.”
The new facility will, according to the media re-
lease, “…offer a full range of family medicine and primary care services, as well as urgent care,” adding the practice is welcoming new patients, as well.
Taking the podium after introductions, Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive for CaroMont Health, Todd Davis said, “Cherryville is and will continue to be a very important part of our care network. This project
was made possible because of the incredible support provided by city leaders and project partners. From designing a building that optimizes efficiency and supports the patient experience, to selecting a location that offers critical access to roadways and utilities, and most importantly, a central connection point for the many neighborhoods that surround us – this practice was designed with the needs
of this community in mind.” It was noted also the combination of primary care and urgent care is not a new concept for CaroMont Health. The dual model is well established in offices in Gastonia and Dallas, according to CMH officials, who added that CaroMont Family Medicine, “…will continue to offer primary care services for patients of

Mary Joyce Leonhardt Lail
(Oct. 8, 1940 –Nov. 15, 2022)
CROUSE – Mary Joyce Leonhardt Lail, known to everyone as Joyce, Mother and Memaw, 82, passed away embraced by love at her home in Crouse, NC. She was born on Oct. 8, 1940 to Melvin Stowe Leonhardt and “Ann”, Annie Clyde Taylor Leonhardt of North Brook Community, Crouse, NC. She was raised with her siblings on their working farm with crops, cattle and a dairy and was born in a cabin on the property. One of her sisters shared that she recognized how important her farm chores were and often checked on her siblings’ chores. She and her husband first lived in Boger City. Later, Joyce and husband, Darrell, built their home on the original farm land and she lived the rest of her life near her home place in Crouse.
She married Eugene Darrell Lail of Cherryville, NC, on Aug. 3, 1958, at Bess Chapel UMC, after meeting at an engagement gathering for Darrell’s brother and Joyce’s sister. They were married for 63 years just short of their 64th anniversary upon Darrell’s passing. Together Joyce and husband, Darrell, enjoyed spending time with their daughter, Sheila, her husband, Tim, and their four granddaughters. She loved all children and always had an interest in her extended family, both the Lail and Leonhardt families. She came to all her daughter Sheila’s dance, band, and majorette events, and mother/daughter banquets. She was a secretary of West Lincoln Band Boosters.
Joyce graduated from the North Brook High School class of 1958. She played softball, was the basketball assistant manager, in Beta Club, drama club, had parts in junior and her commencement play, was a reporter for FHA, annual staff, and was involved with the prom and parade.
Joyce was an excellent seamstress and made clothes for herself and her daughter, Sheila in younger years. She loved to make cloth purses and costumes for her granddaughters. Joyce had a strong work ethic, enjoyed her co-workers, and continued her career in the textile and furniture industries. Among some of her workplaces included Bike Athletic, where she was nominated Textile Employee of the Year, and Bradington-Young as

pursue a life and career of service by watching his uncle serve as a volunteer firefighter. While job opportunities took him to both Rock Hill and Shelby, Cash returned to his hometown, Cherryville, to join the fire department in 1981, serving as a fireman before being named Fire Chief at just 25 years old. In 2019, Jeff was named permanent City Manager. After retiring in 2021, Mr. Cash now provides expert consultation on fire safety and protection across the region.
Joyce was proud of her family. She called her four granddaughters “her Girls” and loved being their Memaw. She displayed great interest in their education, dance recitals, plays, graduations, and beach trips. She loved teaching them about the farm, and her beautiful flower and vegetable garden that she and Darrell cultivated. She would gently pick up a butterfly and let it go and the girls were amazed! She was a Breast Cancer survivor, and in her 60s developed early onset Alzheimer’s. She gave big hugs and had a beautiful smile. She was cared for at home by her husband, daughter, many wonderful caregivers, including, in the past – Jenny Osborne, and most recently, Debra Hyler, Samantha Soles and June Helms, who helped with scheduling and more. All loved Miss Joyce and were like family to us all.
She was a devoted Christian, read her Bible, was a long-time member of Boger City UMC, where she taught children’s Sunday school. She visited Cherryville Second Baptist Church to hear sermons of her brother-in-law, Rev. Jerry Lail and wife, Rita.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell, her parents and sisters, Jane Carswell and Doris Lail. She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Starnes, and husband, Tim of Huntersville, NC; her granddaughters, Anna Welham and husband, Tom’ and new great-grandson, Albert “Bertie” Fox Welham of Bury St. Edmunds, England, Carley Starnes of Charlotte, NC, Mara Monti and husband, Will, of Mooresville, NC, and Emma Starnes, of Huntersville, NC and NCSU. She is also survived by her sister, Lib Carroll, and brother, Bill Leonhardt and wife, Karen.
The family received friends on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022 from 11 a.m., to 12 p.m., in the sanctuary of Boger City United Methodist Church, 2320 East Main St., Lincolnton, NC. Directly following the receiving of friends, the Memorial service was held at 12 noon at Boger City United Methodist Church with Pastor Ronnie Roseboro officiating. Following the Memorial service, immediate and extended family were invited to the burial at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church, 6073 Flay Rd., Cherryville, NC.
Memorials may to be made to Boger City United Methodist Church, 2320 East Main St., Lincolnton, NC, 28092; or to Bess Chapel United Methodist Church, Cemetery Fund, 6073 Flay Rd., Cherryville, NC, 28021.

“I am honored to serve as Chair of the CaroMont Health Board of Directors,” said Cash. “CaroMont Health in an incredible healthcare system focused on putting patients first. My fellow Board members and I take seriously the charge to serve our community. I look forward to continuing to support the strong efforts established to expand services across the region and deliver compassionate, exceptional, and highly reliable care to patients.”

“Jolabokaflod”, known as “the Christmas book flood” in English. This is an Icelandic tradition that started during World War II.
Because paper was not rationed, Icelanders gave books as gifts, usually on Christmas eve. Once the gifts have been opened and everyone has their books, family members find their favorite cozy spots, snuggle up with hot chocolate or other bever-
age of choice, and spend the evening reading.
Being a public library, we don’t sell books – but we love this idea of reading together! We suggest checking out a nice selection of titles for you and your family members to share during the holidays. Who knows? Maybe you’ll start a new tradition! Your own “Jolabokaflod,” if you will!

OPINION
As Elvis once sang, “Well, it’s Christmastime, pretty baby!”
And it is rapidly approaching. Again! As always!
This fact shouldn’t surprise us, but it always seems to. And, as always, we’re sitting here, surrounded by a whole bunch of toy catalogs, trying to figure out what we’re going to get the “grands” this year. I can’t tell you why, only that the pressure to “get” is there and in spades!
By Michael Powell michael.cherryvilleeagle@gmail.com
As we sit and stare at the many and varied toy catalogs, with the “white noise “of the news around us, we are sobered by the terrible and intensely sad events of today. Like all America, we are dumbfounded by the senseless slaughter of innocent people here and abroad. We can’t help but be reminded of another slaughter of in-

gift of love this year: we all really need it – bad!
nocents that took place shortly before Christ’s birth. What words can you use, in this day and age, to explain evil of this (or any) magnitude? I’m not sure there are enough words to handle a task of this size. They all sound so trite, empty, and hollow. It seems, “So sorry for your loss” just doesn’t do anymore. We tell ourselves this year, when our hearts should be turned to doing good for others, “This year, maybe things will be different.” Then something horrible happens and the sanity (or insanity) of humanity; the greatness of our shared human cultures is called into question. When evil
happens anywhere, we shake our heads, stupefied; struck numb at the real horror of it all. And at this season, no less! Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers, of course, go out to those suffering – parents, siblings, grandparents, family members all; to all of those who have lost loved ones to terrorists and maniacs. May they never be forgotten.
My wife says, “Life does go on.” Healing will, in time, dull the intensity of the pain. But I know from first-hand experience, the pain itself never really goes away when you lose someone, anyone, no matter who they are or how they factor into your life, be they friend or family.
Our hope and prayer for all here in Cherryville (and everywhere) who has lost a loved one, or a loved one has gone out of their lives (for whatever reason), is to take a little extra time to hug your children, your grandchildren, or that special family member or
friend, again, no matter their ages; no matter the distance. A phone call or Facetime can stand in for that long-awaited hug. Never, ever, forget to tell them you love them. Perhaps the greatest gift we can give our kids and grandkids this time of year will be to practice what I’m “preaching” here: to love intensely and never put off telling them (or anyone we love)
we love them and they are in our thoughts and prayers always. That’s something you can’t put a dollar value on, but can be “re-gifted” in a small way every day.
So, this season, tell someone you love them and are thinking of and praying for them. It may be the best gift they’ve ever gotten.
This Christmas, all of us in the Powell family –
all of us here at Community First Media, our great newspaper staff – hope and pray that your family/ families will have the greatest of Christmases and it will be your season to be jolly. Like the Dickens “Christmas Carol” character Tiny Tim said, “God bless us every one!” So, this year… Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
Another dear saint has gone to glory! A Christmas rest and peace only
Our community has certainly lost many beloved citizens this year for sure. We indeed lost a very special lady named Vera Sellers Eaker on Nov. 30. She had an amazingly full life as she lived to be a sweet 101 years old.
By Anne S. Haynes
Vera will most definitely be missed by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well as by many, many friends. On Sunday, Dec. 4, the First United Methodist Church of Cherryville was completely filled with mourners who came to honor her life and support her precious family.
I am sad to say that I was not fortunate enough to have known Vera personally, but I felt like I did know her from listening to her pastor, Rev. Zack Christy, preach her funeral
along, with the Rev. Dr. Vince Hefner. They gave all the important facts about her life along with many interesting details from a life that spanned so many years. I was especially interested in the fact that she attended school at one time at the old Fairview School, which was across the road from my house. It’s the same school my dad attended. It was torn down years ago, but there was part of a wall that remained there for years that I liked to visit. I was also pleased to hear that she graduated from Tryon High School which was my alma mater as well.
It was just a year ago when Tommy and I went to the same church to attend the 100th birth-
day party of this special lady. I remember being so amazed at her beauty and zest for life and how she seemed to enjoy the occasion so very much. Signs from the birthday party were on display in the church the day of her service as friends and family greeted the family and related many special memories of this beautiful lady.
I suppose when the special people in our lives leave this world, we want to be assured that they were loved and will be missed. I can say again without a doubt that Vera Eaker was indeed loved and will be greatly missed by many people. I only wish I could have known this wonderful lady and could have talked to her and listened to her relate stories about her life.
May God bless and comfort Vera’s precious family members and friends, now and in the days ahead.
December auditions for “The Importance of Being Earnest”
Upcoming performances for a production at the Cherryville Little Theatre’s Oscar Wilde-written play, “The Importance of Being Earnest” begin in February 2023.
The play is directed by Erika Barnes. Performances are scheduled for Feb. 3, 4, 10, and 11 at 7 p.m., and Feb. 5 and 12, at 3 p.m.
Sarah Fox Sandoval, of the Cherryville Little Theatre, said, “Oscar Wilde’s famous comedy of manners, set in mid-century America, is the classic story of two men – Jack and Algernon –who use aliases to live more adventurous lives and win the hearts of Gwendolyn and Cecily, who both want only
to be with someone named Earnest. A hilarious tale of miscommunication, mistaken identities and love, this modern adaptation of this Victorian play is one you’ll want to be a part of.”

Christmas is a good time to catch up on your pumpkin pie eating. Pecan pie seems readily available so this too is a good option. Try to drink one glass of eggnog during the season of joy. Eggnog does have some calories and fat grams but one glass won’t hurt you too bad. I don’t recommend drinking a gallon.

They slept in a barn and Jesus was born while they were there. Mary laid him in a cow’s trough. They were poor, tired, and life was not very easy for Mary, Joseph, and Jesus.
If you had turkey and ham for Thanksgiving, you may have it again for Christmas. There is nothing wrong with repeating the Thanksgiving meal especially if it was good. If it was bad then you might consider something else. The only time of the year that I eat much turkey or country ham is during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. Be careful eating too much of that smoked turkey and ham because they can be a bit salty. You don’t want to swell up like a balloon on Christmas.
Christmas should be a relaxing time. If you believe Santa Claus is coming then let him take care of the work. Surely, he will show up. Just
The main thing is don’t go crazy this Christmas. You don’t have to buy everything. The stores love for you to max out your credit cards but you won’t love it in February and March when you are paying it back. Use commonsense when it comes to the entire season. Eat a piece of pie but don’t eat the pie. Eat a slice of turkey but don’t eat the turkey. Decorate if you wish but you don’t have to spend a week putting up lights. They will all have to come back down, you know. Spend only what you can afford. If you can’t afford much then don’t press yourself to do what you cannot do.
Christmas is the birthday of Jesus but we often make it a day
Keep in mind that Jesus came to save us from our sins. He came to give us peace. The Bible calls him the Prince of Peace. Most people need some peace and one way to have more peace is to focus on the Baby of Christmas. Christ IS comfort and peace!
You don’t always find your peace at church. Why? Because the church isn’t Jesus. If your church is stressing you out, harping about money every Sunday, and pulling you in 10 different directions then you might consider taking a step back and reevaluating.
The season of joy is here. Don’t depend on others to create joy for you. Get alone with God every day and focus on Him. You’ll discover a peace and a rest that only He can provide.

“Re-gifting”
On modeling the faithfulness of Joseph…
My senior year in high school I had a friend whose girlfriend got pregnant. Naturally, he assumed he was the father. But there was whispering all around school that she’d been seeing some other guys, and that my friend wasn’t the father after all.
There was no paternity testing back then, so there wasn’t any way to know
for sure. But there was enough doubt for him to walk out if he wanted. He weighed the pros and the cons and decided to ask his girlfriend to marry him. She accepted and they got married over Christmas break. In February she gave birth to a daughter who quickly became – and is to this day – the apple of his eye. At that time, the thought of getting married and becoming a parent was the farthest thing from his mind; yet, I think he’d be the first to tell you that,
Be Jolly
(2nd Part of “Tis The Season” Series)
Although this is a festive and fun time of the year, it can also be a stressful and sad time for many people. Losing a loved one, financial challenges or strained relationships can put a damper on the holiday season. Some people are just overwhelmed with life, and wonder if they will ever experience joy or love again. In addition, everyone has to deal with something that is unpleasant at some point. However, joy is much better for your health. Proverbs 17:22 (NLT) “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.”
UNSPEAKABLE JOY
Sometimes, we try to put other things into our lives that don’t quite satisfy us, but God is the only one that can fill those voids. He can remove sadness, bring provision and heal troubled relationships. I have first-hand knowledge of the Lord’s goodness moving in my life, especially during those seasons where I dealt with grief and extremely difficult circumstances. I learned that nothing is impossible for the Lord, and he will help me get through it! He can flip that frown into a smile that shines brightly with unspeakable joy. Romans 15:13 (NLT) says, “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” If there’s an emptiness in your soul God desires to fill you with his presence.
CLOSENESS
During this Christmas, ask God to show you his love and joy in a deeper way. God is a loving supernatural being who chose to be among us to deliver us from darkness, cleanse us from sin, and bring us into an intimate fellowship with him as his children. This is why Jesus was born. Matthew 1:23 says, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).” It’s his desire to be close to humanity. Jeremiah 3:17-18 (GNT) “The Lord your God is with you; his power gives you victory. The Lord will take delight in you, and in his love he will give you new life. He will sing and be joyful over you, as joyful as people at a festival.
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“Father, I delight greatly in who you are. My soul rejoices in you. For you have clothed me with the garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness. Forgive me for not focusing on the true meaning of Christmas. You are the reason for the season. This Christmas, reveal the path of life, and fill me with joy. May Christ make his home in my heart as I trust in him. I pray my roots will grow down into your love and keep me strong. I pray that the fruit of the Spirit will be produced in my life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”

beyond all of his many accomplishments, it was in becoming a father to his little girl that he found his true vocation in life.
When I think about my friend, I’m reminded of the faithfulness of Joseph. It has something to do with getting your own ego out of the way and putting others first. It’s an exercise in humility and it’s based on a simple trust that by God’s grace, all things really do work together for good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purposes (Romans 8:28).
To the world, the faithfulness of Joseph may
seem foolish, but to those who are willing to follow his example and surrender their wills to the will of God, the faithfulness of Joseph is not simply a way of pleasing God; it’s a way of fulfilling your own life’s destiny.
I don’t know a better way to model the faithfulness of Joseph than to start with the prayer of Daniel Iverson who wrote: “Spirit of the Living God, fall a fresh on me; Spirit of the Living God, fall a fresh on me. Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the Living God, fall a fresh on me.”

From Page 1 all ages and CaroMont Urgent Care will offer flexible care options for urgent medical issues.”
Dr. Rebecca Love, board certified in family medicine, and Billie Jo Dagenhart, nurse practitioner, will lead the highly skilled care team in family medicine, with Mr. Austin Gates, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner Kassidy Blanton opening appointments at CaroMont Urgent Care.
Jeff Cash, Chair for the CaroMont Health Board of Directors, said, “CaroMont Health has had a home in Cherryville for more than 15 years, but this morning, we celebrate the future – the expansion of primary and urgent care services here and an important connection to CaroMont’s network of advanced
medical specialties across the region,”
He continued, “Great healthcare begins in buildings like the one behind me, but truly exceptional care comes from the incredible team of health care professionals who choose to work inside it. We have a talented team of people here. They genuinely care about our community and their patients, and they will always do what is right for you and your family.” Mr. Cash also thanked businessman James Russell Beam, County Commissioner Allen Fraley, Mayor H.L. Beam and the Cherryville City Council, many of whom were present at the opening and ribbon cutting, and a host of others who laid the groundwork and gave great support for getting the facility in Cherryville, the city where, he said “…life blossoms.”
Cherryville Mayor H.L. Beam, III said, “This is a great day; a special day for
the City of Cherryville. I want to thank councilmembers Jill Parker-Puett and Jon Abernethy and City Manager Brian Dalton for being here on this great occasion. It seems hard to believe that we were here in October of 2021 – a short 14 months – breaking ground for this beautiful building. We have come a long way since then.”
Mayor Beam noted to Mr. Cash that the city |… owes you a debt of deep gratitude and we wish CaroMont Health the best of luck in the future. To the citizens of Cherryville and the surrounding area, please use this facility, and thank you again to CaroMont Health for locating Cherryville!”
Speaking afterwards, Dr. Andy Dyksterhouse talked about who will be staffing the new facility, then said, “CaroMont Health believes primary health care should be embedded in the community.”
According to a handout
distributed by CMH at the ribbon cutting, the new clinic includes 11 exam rooms, five procedure rooms, and expanded space for reception, waiting and administrative functions.
Also, it was noted that “… new primary care patients may call the office to request an appointment or visit caromonthealth.org to schedule online, and individuals seeking urgent care for the treatment of minor illness and injuries, like colds, ear infections and sprained ankles, do not need an appointment for urgent care but may make a reservation by visiting caromonthealth.org.”
The new CaroMont Family Medicine in Cherryville will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and CaroMont Urgent Care will be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. To make an appointment please call (704) 435-5227.

PARADE
From Page 1
The Chamber’s Mary Beth Tackett noted that things this year looked wonderful as many lined the streets, once again happy to be able to be out and among others, enjoying the pleasant weather and getting to experience one of the area’s premier Christmas parades. The joy on everyone’s faces was infectious, to say the least.
The annual Christmas Parade has a long history, with no one quite sure when the first one took place, though the estimates have been put at “about 25 to 30 years or more, or thereabouts,” according to one citizen who asked not to be named and who said he has lived here all his life.
Tackett said the Christmas Parade came together well enough again this year, with only a minor glitch or two. Still, she was very pleased to see it get started and wind its way down Main Street.
As far as crowd numbers went, Tackett said she was unable to accurately gauge such since she doesn’t actually get to ride in the parade, but she noted she heard from a number of folks this was another large crowd for this event.
It has been noted in the past by Mrs. Tackett that, “The Christmas Parade, like

Little Known Property-Tax Relief Programs Help Seniors Save
Dear Savvy Senior, I recently learned about a property-tax relief program for seniors in the county where I live. Apparently, there are hundreds of these programs across the country that many retirees, like me, are eligible for but don’t know about. What can you tell me about this?
Dear Eddie,
Great question! Residential property-tax refund and credit programs exist in nearly every state, but unfortunately few people know about them. These programs can help retirees and many other Americans by reducing their property taxes. Here’s what you should know.
Rising Property Taxes
Property taxes are a major source of income for local governments, but while they help fund key public services, they can be a financial drain for many homeowners, especially retirees, many of whom live on fixed incomes.
According to Attom Data Solutions, a property-data provider, the average American household payed $3,785 in property taxes in 2021, but this amount varies widely depending on your state’s tax rate and your home’s estimated value. For example, New Jersey residents paid $9,476 per year on average in 2021, while West Virginia residents paid $901.
To help ease this tax burden, most states offer a number of property-tax relief programs. But states aren’t always proactive in letting people know. It’s up to you, the homeowner, to find out what’s available in your county or city that you may be eligible for, and to apply.
Relief Programs
Property tax relief programs, sometimes called exemptions, release eligible homeowners from paying some or all of their property tax obligation. How long the exemption lasts can vary depending on where you live, and the reason you’re applying for the exemption.
The tax-relief process varies by county, city or state. In general, you’ll have to meet certain eligibility requirements, submit an application and provide documents that support your request. Most programs will either reduce, waive or freeze property taxes for seniors, veterans, surviving spouses, disabled and low-income residents.
But there are some counties that also offer basic homestead exemptions to homeowners regardless of age or income, and others that may provide exemptions to homeowners that have recently made energy-efficient improvements to their home.
Where to Look
The best way to learn about local property-tax relief programs and their eligibility requirements is to visit your county, city or state website that collects your property tax. Most of these sites also provide applications and instructions, and will allow you to apply either online, by mail or at your local tax office.
Another good resource for locating programs in your area is the Lincoln Institute, which has a property-tax database that lets you to browse programs across the country. To access it go to ResidentialPropertyTaxReliefPrograms.org.
AARP may also be able to help through their Property Tax-Aide service – see PTAconsumers.aarpfoundation.org. This free program, which is available in 13 states (Arizona, Colorado, Florida–Miami Dade County, Illinois-Cook County, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York and North Carolina) and the District of Columbia helps eligible homeowners and renters apply for relief.

Following behind Santa and Mrs. Claus, the many beautiful horses and their riders that have for many years closed out more than one Cherryville Christmas Parade, bringing many a smile to the faces of little boys and girls who love horses.
Who doesn’t love fire trucks in a Christmas Parade (or ANY parade for that matter)? Top one of the bright red Cherryville Fire Department trucks off with their lovable mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog, and voila, it’s a BIG (Fire) DOG PARTY!
Why, it’s the Grinch, of all folks, er, critters, er… well, whatever he is, he was at the Cherryville Christmas Parade in all his iterations and his bright green glory, sitting next to a very pretty Whoville lady.
And here’s a close-up of the Big Red Right Jolly Old Elf – Santa Claus! What’s more fun than watching Santa throw candy and waving to all his many fans and well-wishers as they all send best Christmas wishes his way!
