Cherryville’s First Baptist Church has a new youth minister/associate pastor in the person of 23-year-old John Roghelia. He is easy to spot; just look up! The 6’4” youngster has a passion for the Lord and for helping young folks in their walk with Jesus that is unmatched by his warmth and his brilliant smile.

Allegiance, Mayor Beam asked council members to approve the agenda, which was done. The council then unanimously approved the minutes of the following meetings: the Aug. 7, 2023 regular session meeting and the Aug. 29, 2023 work session.

Mayor Beam then proceeded to the “Mayor’s Comments” section, whereupon he spoke to the small audience gathered for the

The Homecoming football game will be played that night at Rudisill Stadium against the Warriors of East Gaston High. 8-30: A vehicle driven by Brandon Lee Scarborough, 36, 6704 Mountain View Dr., Kings Mountain, was going through the drive-thru in the Bojangles parking lot while pulling a trailer. The trailer had sheet metal hanging off the end. As Mr. Scarborough was turning through the drivethru, the sheet metal went across the hood of a parked vehicle owned by Rodney Lee Slaughter, 58, 111 Ray St., Cherryville. No injuries reported. Damages est. at none to minor.

9-4: A vehicle driven by Timothy Dean Wilson, 54, 406 Gibson Ln., Cherryville, attempted to make a right turn onto Gibson Lane. As he was doing so, he struck a parked vehicle belonging to Tanisha Jackson Goode, no age given, 104 Black Rock School Rd., Cherryville, which was unoccupied, but parked properly in the parking space there. Evidence of paint exchange was visible on the Wilson vehicle, which was moved at the time of this report. No injuries reported. Est. damages to each vehicle: $1,000/vehicle.

9-9: A vehicle driven by Michaela Annalise Gerlits, 20, 5665 Cohn Eaker Rd., Cherryville, backed into a vehicle driven by Cathy Moore Stephens, 59, 1821 Stony Point Rd., Shelby, while at the BP gas pumps on E. Church Street. Ms. Gerlits said she backed into the Stephens vehicle while trying to exit the gas pump. Ms. Stephens confirmed this to the responding officer. No injuries reported. Est. damages to the Gerlits vehicle: $1,000; to the Stephens vehicle: $1,500.

Butch Boyd

LINCOLNTON – Edward “Butch” Boyd, 77, of Lincolnton, passed away Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023, at Atrium Health Lincoln. He was born June 29, 1946 in Lincoln County to the late Jason Boyd and Leona Hudson.

Butch was a Vietnam veteran of the United States Army. He served as Director of Communication with Carolina Freight. He went on to work as a sales associate with Sprint and WMIT. He later had the opportunity to land one of his dream jobs working at the Billy Graham Library. After the Library, he landed his other dream job of working at the Cherryville YMCA. Butch was a beloved member of the community and well respected by those who knew him.

He was a member of Long Shoals Wesleyan Church, a lay minister, former youth minister, and had served as a hospital chaplain. Butch also served as the former Director of Lincoln County First Responders and was a CPR instructor. He loved to stay active and worked as a Boy Scout director, played tennis, and loved his Silver Sneaker group.

In addition to his par-

ents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Marion Boyd, Jason W. Boyd, Vernon Boyd, Aaron “Lee” Boyd, and Ella May Purdy.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Kathy Hoffman Boyd; daughter, Lea Boyd Binderup (Dave); son, Gary Boyd (Lindsey); grandchildren, Matthew Lail (Jessica), Chandler Hudson (Rylynnd), Hailey Binderup, Kateasha Binderup (Sean), and Brooks Boyd; sisters, Tennie Issac (Steve), Emma Magee, and Delton Cozart; mother-in-law, Joyce Hoffman; sisterin-law, Ruth Boyd; and numerous anieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023 at 2 p.m., at Long Shoals Wesleyan Church with Rev. Matthew Lail officiating. Burial followed at Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors.

The family received friends Saturday from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., prior to the service at the church.

Cherryville man one of 11 indicted by Lincoln County August 2023 Grand Jury

Seven arrested so far as indictments all came about based on drug charges

LINCOLNTON – In a recent media release, the Lincoln County Grand Jury handed down indictments on eleven people on drug charges in their August 2023 session.

The Cherryville Fire Department honored the memory of those fallen 911 victims last week by attaching a large American flag to the ladder of their largest engine. One of those was a Cherryville man, Keith Douglas Mullins, 42, who was charged with felony trafficking by possession, transport, sell and delivery of Schedule III and three counts of sell and delivery of a controlled substance Schedule III.

A Crouse man, Justin Ray Rojo, 26, was charged with four counts each of sell and deliver Schedule II (fentanyl), one count of sell and deliver methamphetamine, and four counts of maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance.

The dates the offenses occurred were in 2022 and 2023 and involved the distribution of methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl and other illegal drugs.

The following remaining individuals have also been arrested on the Grand Jury indictments:

• Daniel Dale Seagle, 23, of Lincolnton, NC; is charged with sell and delivery of a controlled substance Schedule II (meth), possession of methamphetamine, possession with the intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a controlled substance Schedule IV, carrying a concealed weapon, and possess of drug paraphernalia.

St John’s Lutheran Church celebrates God’s Work

Our Hands Sunday

On Sunday, Sept. 10, St. John’s Lutheran Church celebrated God’s Work Our Hands Sunday by celebrating and honoring their volunteers who are so faithful by helping with their monthly community outreach. Volunteers from their church family and in the community enjoyed a delicious meal of BBQ with all the trimmings. St. John’s Outreach is held on

Another year older and on the theft of my time…

I try not to think too much (or too long!) on getting older, though my denial of it doesn’t slow it one bit!

So, I turned 69 on September 4th, and was thinking I felt pretty good for an old guy (can’t say I look any better). Couple that with dealing daily with Type II diabetes and quite possibly coming to realize that I’m not really winning that battle, I guess I’m doing pretty good… all things considered.

The realization that I have moved into another facet of growing older – moving into the Medicare crowd – has actually caused me more consternation and general worry than it should (much of which is my own fault). It seems I’ve got to have this coverage as it is supposed to help

me with my medical expenses and such, but trying to work through all the ephemera and gobbledygook is daunting, to say the very least.

I’m not happy that I will no longer be covered (or so I’ve heard) by my original insurance carrier, with whom I was fairly satisfied and, to add insult to injury, I will have to look for another doctor, one who is in “their program.” So,

how is this crap really helping me at the end of the day? Easy answer… not much! Not much!

For me, my wife (who is now navigating these same waters, because she has recently turned the age to have to do so), and for all of us “oldsters,” our longevity clocks – as the rock group Styx’s great song, “Too Much Time On My Hands,” lyrics note – are “tick, tick, ticking away.” I find that, in my old man callousness and grumpiness, I start to resent just about anything that steals my youth from me and reminds me that I am getting older with every day’s passing moments.

I don’t know about other people, but to me it seems like time is passing by faster than ever. I heard somewhere years ago that time seems to speed up as you age. I can’t speak for other people, but I do believe there is some merit in that saying.

Going back in time, I remember thinking that it took forever for my birthday to roll around each year. Now it seems they are rolling faster than ever. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love birthdays, but as the number continues to rise, I think they could slow down just a little. It seems rather silly when you put it into words, but I think my message is clear.

My sweet mother made our birthdays so

very special. There was always birthday cake and ice cream and presents for the birthday child along with some smaller gifts for the two non-birthday kids. When I look back on those days, I realize how special our mother was as she never left any of us out of the festivities. Some parents look at it differently, and that is quite all right. It’s just that – in my opinion – my mother’s way of looking at it brought the three of us closer.

Sadly, I am the only member of my childhood family who is still living. My precious parents and two great brothers have been in heaven many years.

I’m not sure why, but I always seem to think

about all of them more often as birthday time rolls around. I suppose it’s normal to reminisce as time goes by and more and more changes take place.

We recently attended a very sweet and beautiful wedding at our church where two great people were united in holy matrimony. It was an awesome service that gave me the opportunity to reflect on our marriage and thank God for His many blessings while asking for His blessings on the newlyweds.

Someone once told me that it is important in life to keep looking ahead instead of backward. What’s happened has happened, and nothing can ever change it.

We can take time to reflect on the past, but each day is a new day and a new page to write.

Now, I don’t fall into that “middle-aged” category his character mentions; yet nowadays, it seems anything that insinuates itself on my fairly ordered world of boring, mind-numbing and ill-conceived daily actions that pass as living for me, sadly begin to be measured by that short yardstick of resenting what I perceive to be a waste of my time and money, both of which I

seem to have precious little of, and all of which I hoard as hard and carefully as I might, or think I should.

The great upside to any of this though is I am blessed by having a wonderful woman – my dear wife – who is the best part of me, and has been these past 30 years, and who still, believe it or not, loves me, in spite of my general male idiocy and stupidity. Also, having kids and grandkids who, while they don’t (or can’t, according to them) call or come by as often as we would like, are still the apple of our eyes and the joy of our hearts, bless their little pointed heads!

And while you, dear reader, may think I am “kevetching” about my life, know that I am continually reminded that just having these blessings, along with still being able to work, having a roof over our heads, and living in what is probably one of the best places we’ve ever lived in many a year, are just that – blessings that need to be counted daily, often, and always and forever, until time and times are done. Those, dear friends, are the things that make the theft of my time, real or imagined, a little more palatable. And that’s not a bad thing!

Aaron Rodger’s football career may be over, but maybe not. It’s hard to keep a good man down.

Sometimes, there is too much to overcome to come back.

Many of us watched the mega-media debut of Rodgers as a New York Jets quarterback. His move from Green Bay after 18 seasons catapulted him to New York City celebrity status. He came to the Jets after a hugely successful career with the Packers. His accomplishments were many and include a Super Bowl ring. He has received the Super Bowl MVP award and four NFL MVP awards. He was touted as the man who would revitalize the Jet’s program and lead them to glory.

Rodger’s financial package to make the move from Wisconsin to the Jet’s program

was $75 million dollars over two years. The money is guaranteed even though he may never play again. Rodgers reportedly took a salary cut to make the move.

During last week’s Monday night football game, on the fourth play of the game, Rodger’s Achilles heel tendon was torn during the play. The injury requires surgery and the rest of the season to rehabilitate. The spirit of the electrified crowd spiraled south quickly as Rodgers was transported off the field.

Unfortunately, Rodgers’ injury goes along with the game of football and can happen in most any sport. People can – and do – get hurt. There are no guarantees in sports. Life also has no guarantees. We aren’t guaranteed another day.

Regardless of the size of the financial package, doctor’s report, health, prior success, or talent,

none of us can count on anything for sure.

We can say we are going to travel to a certain city and do business. Yet, there is no guarantee we will be able to complete the trip. We can promise we will work a job for 10 years but it all depends on our health and good fortune. We aren’t assured of another day. We hope; we have faith; we trust; we believe; and we try to make good on our commitments. After this, it’s all in the hands of God.

We do hope Aaron Rodgers recuperates and is able to end his career on a higher note. I suspect that, after last week, and going forward, he might be happy to end his football career by simply being able to play and walk off the field.

Depending on our circumstances, our lives and perspectives seem to always be changing.

A (not-so-short) medley of Scripture’s warnings!

In a country of great freedoms and vast opportunities, the typical Christian finds himself “busybusy-busy,” yet all the while never actually advancing the Great Commission. The treats we give ourselves are not always sinful – but our desires can quickly warp into dreadful weights that hinder our race toward holiness.

So, Scripture calls us to, “Lay aside the weights that so easily beset you.” But in a nation of strong lifestyles, communities, tee-shirt bandwagons, Facebook groups, clubs, memberships, subscriptions, and more – the question needs to be asked: Is my American “livin’” wedged between me and God? Our time, energy, and money are like thermometers for our hearts measuring our heart’s treasures. If God

dropped a bucket into the well of your heart what would the bucket bring to the top? You see, Paul reminds us, “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient. All things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.”

And what about the lifestyles that are sinful? Substance abuse, sexual promiscuity, gossiping busy-bodies, theft, gambling, pathological lying, narcissism, and the like? Of these Scripture says, “Such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” I trust many of us remember the daunting warning for each professing believer to, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.”

3 of “DISTRACTIONS” Series )

We have many good things at our fingertips, especially in America: careers, technology, income, etc. However, when those seemingly harmless things become the number one priority in our lives, they become idols. An idol is anything that we treasure or value above our obedience and relationship to our heavenly Father.

In Matthew 6:24 (AMP) Jesus states, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord].” In other words, we can allow Christ to be the master of our hearts or material things. It can’t be both. Fortunately, God is not against us having worldly good. In fact, he desires to bless his children. Psalms 84:11 (CSB) says, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield. The LORD grants favor and honor; he does not withhold the good from those who live with integrity.”

Don’t Forget

God loves us very much, but he also knows humanity very well. We frequently and quickly become self-centered and prideful too often. He doesn’t want us to forget that he is the one who blessed us. The best way to not become obsessed with stuff is to seek God first before you begin anything. For example, before you create the schedule, ask God to lead and guide you so that you are flowing with his agenda instead of your own. Thank God and give him the credit for your blessings. It will keep you humble. Also, be a generous giver. Deuteronomy 8:10, 12-14, 18 (NLT) says, “When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! Do not become proud at that time and forget the LORD your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt. Remember the LORD your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.”

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Lord, you are righteous in all your ways and kind in all your works. I will forever praise your name. Thank you for giving me another chance to enter into your presence and walk in the divine purpose for my life. Forgive me for being distracted and allowing stuff to consume my time. Help me to remember that everything I have is because you blessed me with it, and everything I do should be out of a heart of obedience to you and your plan. I love you. In Jesus’ name, I pray - Amen.”

Furthermore, on the last day, Jesus will say to false converts, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness.” And “Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”

That passage always stirs up a call to holiness when a Christian reads it. After all, have I done my best for Him, Who has done so much for me? If you and I were honest – we can admit that we are lulled by the freedoms we enjoy. The plethora of opportunities on how to spend our day are sometimes sinful and sometimes not – but the question is not whether our lifestyles are bad, but whether they are good. If we are to “be holy as God is holy,” then we can follow Peter’s example when it comes to sin.

“But when Simon Peter saw it (God’s handiwork), he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.’” Unfortunately, we could be, “Like a man who looks intently at his

natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.”

Perhaps this was the case with Lot. Lot was Abraham’s nephew, a follower of Yahweh, and a patriarch of a great nation. But, unlike the eternal wisdom passed down from Adam to Enoch and to Abraham – Lot forgot eternal Biblical commands such as:

• “If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed.”

• “Touch not the unclean thing”

• “Therefore, let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.”

• “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.”

• “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” and

• “Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.”

Having forgotten these eternal principles of personal holiness, faith, and virtue – Lot pitched his tent towards Sodom and Gomorrah, then he made his home in its city walls and later lost his sobriety. Lot’s lifestyle mirrors the life of a man found in the New Testament church of Corinth who did something so sinful that, “It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans.”

So, what do we make of all these commands? Since the Bible demands that you and I live totally separate from sin – what does that mean about the people we befriend, the places we go, the businesses we financially support, the TV shows we watch, the music we promote, and the way we vote?

After all, we are a new creation in Christ! Though we may stumble, the true believer always perseveres. Even nephew Lot bears the title, “righteous Lot” in God’s eyes! This is because God’s Grace is infinite! He has “cast our sins as far as the East is from the West.” “Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more”! My friend, since the Christian is now identified as a “new creation,” how should the Christian interact with those who refuse to repent and continue walking in darkness. After all, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,” and we are told, “you are the light of the world...” We know that “men love darkness rather than light.” In fact, “the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.”

Mayor Beam also noted a new Little League monument is in the works with Dr. White agreeing to cover the cost for it. Beam also mentioned eight (8) new basketball goals have been installed at the city’s parks.

“Pete’s Fish Box opened last week, and I heard it was an overwhelming success,” said Mayor Beam. Beam also mentioned the possibility of a new Mexican restaurant coming to the site of the old Pizza Express building on Main Street; that project is expected for December of this year, he added.

“Also, there is a new golf shop in the old Belk building, a new floral shop coming to the former Bella Verde building, and the Splash Pad at the Ballard Park pool is expected to be ready by early Spring 2024.”

Beam also noted that, in his 10 years as mayor, he personally hasn’t seen so many new businesses choosing to make Cherryville their new home.

Roghelia said he was saved at the age of eight as a child in Maryland, and later rededicated his life at the age of 18.

“I had, like many teens do, a mild run of rebellion in my life,” he said, “but I had a youth pastor who talked to me and helped me greatly.” John said he played basketball at Gardner-Webb and was a “shooting guard.”

As the church’s youth pastor, Roghelia said he ministers to kids from age12 to 18, or roughly grade 6 up to the 12th grade.

“For me, it’s all about building relationships with them; getting to know them personally. I’m used to reaching out to fifth- and sixth-grade kids, so this isn’t a big stretch for me,” he noted.

A self-professed fan of all spots, John said he loves pro basketball; especially the San Antonio Spurs. He

As far as where he is right now, he said, “I have no desire to leave First Baptist and plan to be here, as long as the Lord is willing. This church is full of family; people who love and care for you in every season of life.” He continued, “I am blessed to have the kind of

youth we have here at First Baptist. They accepted Ari and I with open arms, and they are willing to serve the church and the community in every way possible, whether it is holding a pancake breakfast for the community or going out and helping pick up trees and limbs out of people’s yard.”

Roghelia said his goal as a youth pastor is to, “… teach these youth to be a disciple who makes disciples, so I will equip them on how to study scripture, and be diligent followers of Christ.”

As far as his and Ari’s future plans, he said, “My

fiance’ and I plan to be here in Cherryville as long as the Lord will have us here. We would love to be a part of a mission trip in some form of fashion if God calls us that way. But as a youth pastor, I feel my calling is here with the youth at First Baptist.” For his part, Dr. Hefner said John and his future bride, Ari, have both been a great blessing and help at the church and doing wonderfully with the FBC youth.

Lady Ironmen volleyball teams hold their own at Nixon Gym

Though varsity; JVs dropped a couple of matches, teams make a great showing

CHS volleyball head coach Leigh Kiser said the Lady Ironmen varsity and JV teams dropped a couple of matches this past week.

Kiser noted her ladies traveled to play the Lady Warriors of East Gaston for an SPC 1A/2A conference match and – unfortunately –came away losers by a 3-0 score. Match scores in this game were 25-18, 25-15, 25-11.

Said Coach Kiser, “We were whipped from start to finish.”

For CHS, Emily Allen, with 3 serve aces, 8 kills and 9 digs; Taylor Digh’s 8 digs; and Carson Reed’s 3 blocks led the stats in this one, according to Kiser.

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, The Lady Cavaliers of East Rutherford come to Cherryville’s Nixon Gym for a non-conference matchup, and again the Lady Ironmen suffered another defeat by a 3-0 score. Noted Coach Kiser, scores in this matchup were 25-17, 27-25, and 25-14. Kiser also said, “I thought our team played with more energy in this loss.”

Railey Gidney’s 3 aces, Taylor Digh’s 11 digs, and

Carson Reed’s 4 kills and 2 blocks were leaders for Cherryville in this loss.

The JV Lady Ironmen suffered the same fate with 2-0 losses at East Gaston, and at home to East Rutherford. Against the Lady Warriors, Landry Beam’s 4 digs led the CHS JV defense and Camryn Shirley’s 3 assists against the ER JV squad led Cherryville’s JV ladies.

Coach Kiser noted both teams were on the road Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Thomas Jefferson in the only match of the week.

Currently, the varsity ladies are 6-8 overall, and 3-3 in conference play, while the JV ladies are 5-9 overall.

CLT spokesman, Wade Stroupe, said of their upcoming 50-year commemoration, which is planned for Sept. 22 and 23, 2023, “Cherryville Little Theatre is, of course, excited to announce and promote its lineup for the 51st season.”

Stroupe also noted that, following their 50th Reunion, ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, a stage version which led to movie and TV series of the same name, will come to the stage on Oct. 26 – 28.

“On Feb. 23, 2024, ‘Bright Star’, an award-winning bluegrass musical will debut, and rounding out the year of primary shows, in August of 2024, the full version of ‘The Little Mermaid’ will come alive at CLT,” he said.

Wade also noted the Theatre group will continue to produce future very successful events, such as the popular ‘Comedy Improv Nights’, as well as productions in association with other drama groups, such as Lincoln Charter Schools. Stroupe also noted other interesting facts about CLT, which are listed below:

membership, working with an active board of directors that provides oversight and management of Theatre operations. There have never been any paid positions, with volunteers providing all the work and effort to sustain the organization. 140 different plays/ shows have been produced by the Theatre, with an average of three performances per play, there have been around 420 performances on the Theatre stage.

“On average, with a conservative estimate of 80 audience members present per performance, over 33,000 people have attended Theatre performances. Although difficult to quantify, an estimate of 20 people participated on every production, so more than 2,800 people have worked as cast and crew members on plays. The theatre averages almost three productions/shows per year.

“2016 was a landmark year in that the Theatre produced the most plays in one year, with six (6) different plays on stage in 2016. This number was equaled in 2019 as well. The Theatre operates as a 501(c) organization with IRS tax exempt status.

“With 50 years of consistent operation, the Cherryville Little Theatre has far exceeded the life expectancy of most community theatre groups.”

Each HC Court member filled out a questionnaire about being chosen for the court and basically general information about themselves.

Lila Grace Sermersheim, 17, is the daughter of Mary and James Sermersheim. Her siblings are Eleanor and Beckham Sermersheim, who are at Chavis Middle School; and Finn Sermersheim, who is at Cherryville Elementary. Lila plays, or has played, Lady Ironmen varsity soccer and basketball. She said she is involved in the following clubs: Metalheads, FCA, Kindness, and Encompass. Her college plans are to go to ECU and major in Psychology and minor in Physical Education.

Of her being chosen for the HC court, she said, “I am so honored to be chosen by my classmates for this year’s Homecoming Court. It is so exciting to be a part of this with my best friends. There is nothing like a Cherryville (High School) Homecoming!”

Her friend and fellow senior, Ceniya Powell, also 17, is the daughter of Rhonda Powell Barnes. Her siblings are Cruyff “Quae” Fleurine and Mark Gadson (both former Ironmen athletes).

Ceniya’s school activities include Drama Club and Video Game Club, while her school sports include Lady Ironmen basketball, volleyball, and track. Ceniya noted she plans to attend Gardner-Webb University and major in accounting.

Regarding her being chosen for the HC Court, she said, “I thought this year would be the year I would sit back and watch. I guess I was wrong. I’m glad I was. I am so thankful to have this once-in-a-lifetime experience. This will be one for the books!”

Seventeen-year-old Briley Wright is the daughter of Brandon and Leslie Wright. Her sibling is Carson Wright, a graduate of CHS. Briley said she is a Teacher Cadet, and her sports activities include Lady Ironmen volleyball. She is also active in the Metalheads Club and FCA.

Briley’s college of choice is ECU, where she hopes to study to be an Ultrasound Tech.

Said Briley (about being chosen to be on the HC Court), “It is a huge honor and pleasure to be voted onto the Homecoming Court to represent the student body at CHS. It really means a lot!”

CHS’ Malia Emory, 17, is the daughter of Mark and Dawn Emory, and her brother, Jared is well-known to JCMS and CHS, both as a graduate and an Ironmen athlete. Malia counts Metalheads, Interact, Kindness as clubs she is active in, as well as being on the staff of the CHENOCA Yearbook. She is in the National Honor Society, the National Technical Honor Society, Beta Club, and

attending a four-year university to major in nursing. “I’m honored to be chosen by my peers to represent our senior class,” she said.

Laila Davis, 19, is the daughter of Joe and Bethany Davis, and her siblings are Brianna Davis (CHS Class of 2020), and Krista Davis, a CHS junior.

Laila said she has been a Lady Ironmen softball player all four years at CHS, and has played JV and varsity volleyball, also all four years. For the past three years, she said she has played Lady Ironmen basketball.

Laila is on the yearbook staff and is in the FCA Club. As for college, she said, “After graduation, I plan to attend Gaston College and complete the Vet Tech Program.”

Davis wants to get an Associate of Applied Science twoyear degree then get a four-year degree in Veterinary Technology.

Of her being chosen for the HC Court, she said, “I feel honored and extremely humbled to be voted (onto) the 2023 Homecoming Court by my peers. I would like to thank them all for this exciting opportunity.”

As for their escorts, Ms. Davis is escorted by Tyler Blaylock; Ms. Emory is escorted by Nate Bookout; Ms. Powell is escorted by Logan “Judd” Ervin; Ms. Sermersheim is escorted by Bryson Sigmon; and Ms. Wright is escorted by Robbie Bowman.

JCMS boys golf team roundup

On Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, JCMS boys golf coach William Skibo said his team played a Sept. 14 match at the Cherryville Golf and Country Club, against Belmont and Cramerton. Coach Skibo said team scores were: Cramerton, 178; Belmont, 191; and Chavis, 195. The medalist was Cramerton’s Tripp Stacey, with a 41.

Chavis’ scores were: Caiden Bowman, 45; Will Skibo, 46; Steven Bell, 52; and Trevor Dalton, 52.

Belmont’s scores were: Noah Ledford, 45; Harley Green, 46; Jackson Moore, 48; and Everett Stafford, 52.

CHS Ironmen football lose at Shelby
