Main Street forum Sept. 25 defines new downtown vision By Loretta Cozart On Wednesday, Sept. 25, Downtown Kings Mountain Main Street Program held a forum and 30 community representatives interested in refining a new vision for the Downtown District volunteered to help. Main Street Coordinator, Susan Matheson, welcomed participants and introduced facilitators Sherry B. Adams, Coordinator, Downtown Programming and Technical Assistance for NC Main Street and Rural Planning Center’s Rural Economic Development Division, and Jeff Emory, Community Economic Development Planner of the Southwest Prosperity Zone. Participants broke into five groups, reviewing and identifying community assets and then focused on downtown specific assets.
After reviewing downtown economic drivers, groups participated in a Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threat (SWOT) analysis helping Downtown Kings Mountain Main Street Program determine economic development strategies and define actions. In finishing the workshop, each group wrote their own version of an Economic Positioning and Vision Statement. Downtown Kings Mountain Main Street Advisory Board continued the workshop the following morning and used those statements and group notes as a guide for the downtown’s new vision statement. This is an ongoing process that will take time to refine and develop in the upcoming weeks and months. “Thank you to all who attended the Community
Forum. Many people came from different perspectives within the Downtown District, but they all share the same vision of a thriving gathering place to connect and enjoy the City’s unique heritage,” ,” said Susan Matheson.
“The ongoing input and assistance from citizens and business leaders is critical to the success of the Main Street Program. Combining our efforts, we can reach the visions of economic development and revitalization for the Downtown District.”

Community supports “A smile for Kairee” By Loretta Cozart Friends and family, along with total strangers of Kairee Sanders, supported A Smile for Kairee yard sale fundraiser last Saturday, October 5 at the American Legion. On Friday, donations poured into the American Legion Banquet Hall. Overwhelmed, grandmother Cindi Smith batted back tears saying, “People we didn’t even know dropped off items all day Friday. I was humbled by the generosity of everyone who donated, helped, and shopped. It was amazing. Words cannot express our gratitude.” Shortly after the yard sale began, people arrived to shop. A steady crowd browsed through the items throughout the day and grabbed a hotdog lunch on their way out. There was also a bake sale and Kona Ice Truck on site. All pro-

legal blindness, sleep apnea and decreased kidney function. She is developmentally delayed; her entire left side of her body is smaller than her right from head to
toe and she has facial deformities. At 16, Kairee has stopped growing and the time has come to fix her jaw, nose, and give her a new set of teeth through a series of several facial surgeries, according to mom, Ashley.
“I heard that it takes a village to raise a child, and we saw that our village supports giving A Smile for Kairee. Please continue to support her by keeping up with her progress, various fundraisers, as well as praying for her,” she asks. For more informa-

Veteran’s breakfast grows at American Legion By Loretta Cozart American Legion Post 155 delivered friendship and a hearty breakfast to veterans on October 5, serving 60 made-to-order meals last Saturday morning. Members of Sons of the American Legion took orders, delivered plates, and cleaned up afterward. Members of The American Legion Riders, Sons of the American Legion, and
American Legion Auxiliary take turns monthly to keep the event going. Treasurer of the American Legion Auxiliary, Heidi Carroll said, “We used to take a break from the breakfasts in the Fall, but the Post has decided to continue them without interruption because we have had such a positive turnout from our veterans. We don’t want to lose that momentum. And, the veterans tell us they enjoy the friendship and meal the gathering offers.” Legion members chat with veterans, refill bev-
erages, and work let veterans know they are appreciated while serving up eggs, bacon, liver mush, gravy, grits, biscuits, toast, coffee and juice. Others who want to support veterans are welcome to attend for a small donation which helps fund future breakfasts. Kings Mountain’s American Legion Post 155 host a Veteran’s breakfast the first Saturday of every month, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Otis D. Green Post home on East Gold Street. The next Veterans Breakfast is November 2.

TODAY’S QUOTE:
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. –Helen Keller
Pieces of Kings Mountain History By Loretta Cozart
Mountaineer Pride. What does it mean? What it means to you personLORETTA ally may be COZART very different than what it means to your neighbor. In Kings Mountain, we take pride in our community. Today it is easy to equate Mountaineer Pride with KMHS football. It seems that week after week, we keep winning. The scores resemble those of basketball, not football. Last week we won 70 –
zip! That is amazing. It is a wonderful position to be in, especially for the high school students. I graduated in 1978 and witnessed some pretty good football teams in my day. Kevin Mack played during those years. Steve Laughter, Chuck Gordon, Bruce Valentine, and Kelly Land were some of the big players in my class. Forty-one years later, these guys still support the Touchdown Club and that’s a good thing. Over the years, I’ve heard old timers bragging on high school football from the mid 1950’s into the 1960’s and wished
my classmates could have experienced the all-encompassing community support from that time personally. To have a winning program during the “golden decade” would have been magical. To see the community supporting the team the way they did would have been surreal. Knowing it took 33 years for Kings Mountain High School to achieve its first conference win makes this season even sweeter. This morning, I realized that each new season gives us another opportunity to show our Mountaineer pride, wear the black and gold, welcome competi-
tors, and lead by example in hospitality and sportsmanship. Attending football games at John Gamble Stadium this year is a fantastic experience. The new field is beautiful and the fresh paint all-around looks great. The Touchdown Club has done an excellent job rejuvenating our community’s support for the Mountaineers and raising funds necessary to bring our sports facilities up to the collegiate level. It seems the support has paid-off by having a positive impact on the players’ performances. It is a winwin for everyone.
Kings Mountain High School’s 1972 Homecoming Parade traveled so through the downtown business district for their annual event. Club floats, Homecoming Queen nominees, the band, and football team participated. The parade route traveled down Battleground Avenue, passing First Union National Bank, the Gulf Station, Belk’s, Kings Mountain Drugs, Eagle’s, Roses, and Grayson’s Jewelers, among others. Clubs competed for bragging rights. Students and members of the community lined both sides of the street to cheer on the KMHS Mountaineers. process. Learning to savor the moment is an important lesson I hope to share with others. Now that crisp Fall nights have arrived, it’s time to pull out our black and gold clothing and cheer on the Mounties. Let’s cheer for today’s Mountaineers. In doing so, let’s remember all the Mountaineers who came before them during Kings Mountain High School’s 97-year history of football. It is our legacy and we should take pride in where we’ve been and where the season takes us. Go Mounties.
I don’t have a crystal ball and wouldn’t presume to guess how this season will end. I really don’t want to know anyway. The excitement is in the

Homecoming is a week from Friday, October 18, when the community paints the town Black and Gold. Downtown businesses paint their windows black and gold and folks fly school colors cheering on the Mounties. Students decorate their cars and citizens do the same. Black and Gold attire is worn by young and old alike. Pride is contagious and bonds the community together.
Many have watched the powerful television report of Brandt Jean’s act of forgiveness Glenn Mollette toward AmGuest Editorial ber Guyger who killed his brother Botham Jean. The scene of him hugging her and extending forgiveness toward her has been replayed over and again and invoked a sundry of reactions from across the nation and the Texas community. The former Dallas police officer Guyger testified that she shot her victim by mistake, in his own apartment while he was eating ice cream. She was sentenced to ten years in prison and many thought it would have been much longer. Allison Jean, the mother of the brothers wrote on her Facebook page to her son Brandt, “Your load is lighter. Regardless of the views of the spectators, walk with God always. Forgiveness is for the forgiver and it doesn’t matter what the forgiven does with it. “ From the Lancaster, PA community in 2006, comes the story of ten young schoolgirls killed in an Amish one room school. On the afternoon of the killing an Amish grandfather expressed forgiveness toward the killer Charles Roberts. That same day Amish neighbors visited the Roberts family to comfort them. Later that week the Roberts family was invited to the funeral of one of the Amish girls who had been killed. Amish mourners would later outnumber the nonAmish at Charles Roberts’

funeral. The story is told that the killer was tormented for nine years by the premature death of his young daughter. He never forgave God for her death. Yet, after he cold-bloodedly shot ten Amish schoolgirls, their families and friends almost immediately forgave him and showed compassion toward his family. In 2015, from the historic Charleston, South Carolina Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, comes the story of forgiving relatives. One by one those who chose to speak at his trial did not turn to anger. Instead, while the killer Dylann Roof remained impassive, they offered him forgiveness and said they were praying for his soul, even as they described the pain of their losses. “I forgive you,” Nadine Collier, the daughter of 70-year-old Ethel Lance, said at the hearing, her voice breaking with emotion. “You took something very precious from me. I will never talk to her again. I will never, hold her again. But I forgive you. And have mercy on your soul.” I don’t know what I would do. I can’t tell you what to do because I don’t know what has happened to you. It’s between you, whoever and God and how you want to live your life. However, if you carry a lifelong load of hate, resentment and bitterness, it will wear you down. The words of Jesus remind us from the Bible ... “For if you forgive men their trespasses your father in heaven will forgive you.” Think about it. Is there someone you need to forgive?

Mountaineers break scoring record two weeks in a row A missed extra point a week earlier at Stuart Cramer was the difference in a “perfect” 70 point night but the defense and kicker Austin Browning made up for it Friday night when the Mountaineers rolled over North Gaston 70-0 for the most lop-sided victory in 97 years of KMHS football. With the running clock limiting each team to just a few plays in the second half, North Gaston was knocking on the door for a possible score late in the fourth quarter with a first and goal at the six yard line. A hard hit by the KM D forced a fumble and sophomore Marquis Adams picked it up and rambled 94 yards for a touchdown and Browning nailed his 10th PAT of the night to break the record for the most points in a single game for the second week in a row. The previous week at Stuart Cramer, where KM won 69-17, Browning’s first PAT attempt failed but this time he got a perfect snap, perfect placement and perfect kick for the perfect seventy. “It was a good all-around game,” said KM Coach Greg Lloyd. “We got to get everybody in the game. Our defense played a lot better than the week before and our special teams were solid. Our receivers showed up and our running backs had a good game. All in all I was well pleased.” North Gaston, playing without several starters, was never in the game as the Mountaineers scored on all but one of their first half possessions to take a 56-0 lead at the break. The KM coaches pulled all of their starters at halftime to give the reserves a lot of playing time and they scored on both of their possessions. The Wildcats, winless in the Big South, won the toss and deferred to the second half. The Mountaineers went right to work with Ethan Reid hitting Quintin Davidson for a 48-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage for his first of five TD tosses. The Mountaineer defense was in top form all night, holding the Wildcats to minus 32 yards rushing in the first half and just 18 for the game. Only four See RECORD 3B

Kings Mountain’s Kobe Paysour returns a kick in Friday’s game with the North Gaston Wildcats at John Gamble Stadium.
For the last two years the Hunter HussKings Mountain game has been the one that has decided the Big South 3A Conference championship. It very well could come down to that again, although the Crest Chargers and possibly the Forestview Jaguars could also have their say. Two years ago an injured Kaylon Wade came off the sidelines to replace his back-up John Harmon Melton when he went down with an injury, and despite a painful limp helped the Mountaineers defeat the Huskies in Gastonia. After Crest upset Huss to put the Mountaineers alone at the top Greg Lloyd’s team went to his alma mater and whipped the Chargers in the last game of the season to win the title outright. Last year, the Huskies and Mountaineers battled for the top spot again at Gamble Stadium and the Huskies came out on top to claim the championship. With the type of skill athletes at both schools, this year’s game is shaping up as another one that could go down to the wire. Both teams can put their earlier lop-sided victories aside and know that this one is going to be the toughest. The Mountaineers have been riding high all year – especially the last three weeks with blowout victories over their arch rival Shelby and two of their most lop-sided wins in history over Stuart Cramer and North Gaston. If anyone thinks either team will approach 69 or 70 points this week, they’d better think again. “Huss is one of the three teams that beat us last year, and they’re very good again,” Lloyd notes. “They’re big and their backs are really good. Their quarterback is a returner and is very good. They’re excellent all around. They are extremely fast and their defense storms to the ball.” Huss is always a tough place to play, and this year is no exception. Zo Wallace is one of the top all-around quarterbacks in the state. He is averaging 139 yards passing per game, but he is also one of the top running quarterbacks and can make big plays with his arm or his legs. He has a host of good running backs/receivers at his disposal, including Charlotte Catholic transfer Lamagea McDowell who is averaging over 90 yards rushing per game since joining the Huskies two weeks into the season. He’s not their only threat, though, as the Mountaineers will also have to hold runners like Malik Corry, Quentavious Murray and Jalen Ladet in check. See GAME, Page 3B

RECORD From Page 1B of their running plays in the first half went for plus yardage – two for one yard and two for two. Ten of their first half carries went for minus yards, and two more for zero. They didn’t get a first down until the 2:10 mark of the third quarter. By that time the score was 63-0. Their biggest gain was when Antowan Ottey ran for a first down to the KM six in the final minutes. After an incomplete pass, the Wildcats fumbled and Adams scooped it up and out-raced everyone 94 yards for the touchdown, and Browning’s extra point that broke the record. The Mountaineer offense just couldn’t be stopped.
GAME From Page 1B Corry joins Wallace as a strong double threat as he leads the team in both rushing and receiving. Another returner is highly-recruited Dontaviuos Nash who excels on both offense and defense. “They’re excellent in all areas,” Lloyd said. “They’re extremely fast, their defense storms to the ball. They’re the most athletic team we’ll see. And they’ve been able to work on us for two weeks. It should be a good environment.” With seven straight wins under their belt, the Mountaineers are on their longest opening season winning streak since 1964 when they won all ten of their regular season games before falling to Hickory in the opening round of the Western
After the initial score, North punted and it was downed on the KM 35. On first down Kobe Paysour took a shovel pass from Reid and went 65 yards to run the score to 14-0. North had to punt again and Paysour returned it 72 yards to the end zone but it was called back on a block in the back penalty. The drive eventually failed on a fourth and three pass attempt from the North 35. Day-Day Wilson’s sack on third down forced another North punt. A touchdown reception by James Ussery was nullified on a penalty but Paysour hauled in a 31-yard pass from Reid for a 21-0 lead that stood at the end of the first period. A sack by Robert Lipscomb forced a punt which Paysour returned 40 yards to the North 20. Two plays later Reid hit Orlando
Odums for a 16-yard TD and a 28-0 lead with 10:35 on the clock. Yet another North punt and 25 yard return by Paysour put KM on the North 25. A 20-yard lateral pass to Paysour went for 20 yards, and two plays later Day Day Wilson bulled into the end zone for a one-yard TD and a 35-0 lead. A fumble recovery by Ty Ledbetter at the 6:53 mark at the North 21 set up a Reid to Rashaard Brooks TD and a 42-0 lead. A 29-yard North punt rolled out of bounds at the Cats’ 45 and Ricaylen Mack got great blocking and covered the distance on first down to run the score to 49-0. Yet another three and out and a 24-yard punt put KM in business at the North 30 and Brooks covered all 30 with a 13-yard
pass reception and runs of nine and eight yards to go into the break with a 56-0 lead. With the starters cheering on from the sidelines, the back-ups took the field. Following a North three and out, Blake Emory returned a punt to the North 30 but a penalty put the Mountaineers back to the 41. Hope sandwiched runs of 29 and two yards around a 12-yard gain by back-up quarterback Belton Pressley for a 63-0 lead with six minutes remaining. North kept possession from that point until the final seconds when Adams made his record-setting fumble return.
NC High School Activities Association championship playoffs. Kings Mountain has the top statistical leaders in the BSC with quarterback Ethan Reid leading the league in passing yards and touchdowns thrown and receivers Quintin Davidson and Kobe Paysour 1-2 in receiving. Balancing out the Mountaineer attack is what now has to be regarded as the top 1-2 running punch in the BSC with Rashaard Brooks and Ricaylen Mack both piling up yardage. Brooks is the leading rusher in the conference, and in two games since returning from knee surgery Mack is back to his old form and pounding opposing defenses. Of course, they have a talented offensive line to thank for it and the Mountaineer defense has turned its opponents every
which way but loose. Strong in all levels – line, linebackers and secondary – the Mountaineers have held six of their seven opponents to under a hundred yards rushing and one (TC Roberson) to minus 20. Only one of their opponents (Cramer) has rushed for more than 100 yards against them, and only one (West Meck) has had over 200 yards total offense (283). They held a good Burns team to just 49 yards total offense, former state champion Monroe to 13 yards rushing, TC Roberson to minus 20, and perennial state power Shelby to nine. The Mountaineers won’t completely be at full speed as starters Chris Ruffalo and Bryce Fisher are injured but Lloyd hopes to have them back after their opening date in two weeks. Transfer Chazz Armstrong, who sat out the first five games with an injury, is now
starting in the secondary and doing a good job but is still not a hundred percent. Even with the injuries Lloyd sees the Mountaineers as “pretty healthy” and says the key to the game will be “to match their (Huss’s) intensity and come out and play good early.” Lloyd said he has been pleased with the Mountaineers’ line play and both the offensive and defensive lines will have to control the line of scrimmage. “We have to pick up yards and we have to put pressure on their quarterback,” he said. “They have good receivers and running backs. “Offensively we have to limit our penalties and take care of the ball. If we keep playing like we have, it won’t be easy but we’ll have a good shot at winning.”
