Police request help identifying robbery suspect Kings Mountain Police need the public’s help in apprehending a man who robbed the Circle P convenience store at 301 Phifer Road Monday night about 7:45 p.m. Det. Cpl. Todd McDougal said that a black male entered the store and, during a strong-armed robbery, took an undisclosed amount of money from the clerk after

time that Byers shined as a world-class Olympian. “Bamm Bamm”, a nickname he earned competing on the mat at Kings Mountain High, is a three time world medalist. He wrestled for the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program in Colorado Springs, CO, was world champion in 2002 and is 10-time U.S. champion. He finished seventh in the Olympics in Beijing, China, in 2008. His hopes of an Olympic medal were dashed in London, England in August but he gave his fans plenty to cheer about. Santa Claus is coming to Grover Saturday at 11 a.m., in the annual Grover Area Women’s Club-sponsored 50-unit Christmas parade. The parade will line up at 10 a.m. at Spring Acres near the center of town and will proceed down Main Street and disband on Cleveland Avenue. Grover Fire Department is in charge of traffic control. Cleveland County Commissioner Mary Accor will serve as grand marshal of the 2012 parade. Accor was the first woman to chair the county board where she served 15 years, more consecutive terms than any living member of the board. She was president of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners and retired October 31 after more than 33 years in the Cleveland County School System. ■ OBITUARIES Navy man was buried at sea in Virginia LYONS, NJ – Bradley Byers, 58, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 at the Veterans Hospital in Lyons, New Jersey. Born Dec. 24, 1953, he was the son of the late Catherine Cleo Hicks Byers of Oxford, NC and Theodore Byers of Kings Mountain. Bradley was a US Navy veteran who completed the Cleveland Community College welding course, held m a n y jobs as a handy person and was also employed by the Newark, NJ Fire Department as a firefighter. Due to his illness, he had been disabled for many years.

Willodean Timms Sang in choir for 59 years KINGS MOUNTAIN Willodean “Deanie” Gilliland Timms, 78, resident of 943 York Road, Kings Mountain, died Sunday, November 25, 2012 at Kings Mountain Hospice House. She was born in Coopers, Ala., to the late Clyde and Mary Jane Driver Gilliland. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, David “Shorty” Timms, three brothers, and one sister. She was an active member of Oak View Baptist Church where she has been a member of the choir for 59 years, and retired from K Mills after 20 years of service. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Surviving are her daughters, Sharon T. Cyrus Falls Served FBI for 36 years TAMPA, FL – Cyrus Thomson Falls of Tampa, Florida died Tuesday, November 20, 2012. He was 79. Cyrus was born January 1933 in Dunedin, Fl., to Cyrus T. Falls Sr. a n d Bonnie Wa r e , w h o w e r e originally from Kings Mountain N.C. Cyrus’ early life was spent traveling between Dunedin and Kings Mountain working the growing seasons. He would pick citrus in the winter on the local orange groves, while spending the summers on the family property North Carolina. In June of 1957 he married Cynthia Washburn and they have two children, Russell and Wesley. Cyrus Joined the F.B.I. and worked from the Washington DC, Little Rock, Miami, Newark and Tampa offices as a special agent for the bureau. In

1990 after an impressive career with the bureau, Cyrus retired from the F.B.I. after thirty-six years to Tampa. Cyrus was a member of Van Dyke Methodist Church in Tampa. Cyrus is survived by his wife Cynthia and their children, and their grand children. Son, Russell Falls and wife Kathy and their three children, son, Clinton and wife Kim, and daughters, Allison and Brooke, all of Kings Mountain, NC. Son, Wesley Falls and his son Kaleb Falls of Dunedin, Fl. And his sister, Sara McCraney and her family of Dunedin, Fl. No charges filed against driver in fatal accident The driver of a car that hit and killed a pedestrian Nov. 9 on Goforth Road in Kings Mountain will not be charged. Trooper J. Prescott of the N.C. Highway Patrol said that Donald Eugene Blanton, 25, 1300 W. Gold St. Ext., was walking east in the west bound lane on SR 2014 and was struck in the roadway by a 2007 Chrysler operated by Charles Thomas Deaton, 24, 138 Green Meadows Drive. Prescott said that Deaton was traveling west on SR 2014. He said the “pedestrian came to rest facing east off the right side of the roadway down in a ditch.” Estimated speed on impact was 35 m.p.h. in a 55 m.p.h.

AAA estimated that more than 1 million people in NC traveled more than 50 miles from their homes over the Thanksgiving holidays. The average trip length for North Carolinians was around 600 miles round trip. The day before Thanksgiving is reported to be one of the busiest days of the year to travel. One way the NC Department of Transportation tried to decrease traffic prob-

lems was by stopping all construction on interstates as well as most state and US routes on Tuesday, Nov. 20. According to AAA, statewide gas prices were an average of six cents lower than this time last year. Prices on Wednesday, Nov. 21 were an average of $3.31, compared to $3.85 in September. Kings Mountain was a little higher, with the average gas cost being $3.39, while Grover’s gas averaged $3.07 throughout the holiday weekend.

Plant Cleveland, 240 Battleground Road, will cut the ribbon Tuesday, Dec. 4, marking the start-up of Southern Powerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 275-acre Cleveland County Generating Facility near Grover. The celebration will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. with plant tours following the ribbon-cutting. Southern Power broke ground for the two-phase power generation project and $400 million investment Oct. 13, 2009. The City of Kings Mountain made history with the signing of a 20year contract to supply raw water for the new industry. In full production in the second phase of the project, the generating facility could become the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second largest taxpayer with what officials envision as a billion dollar business. The plant goes on line with four combustion turbine units with a combined

This year, on Saturday, Dec. 1, the Kings Mountain Family YMCA will kick off the 12th annual â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jingle Bell Rockinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Runâ&#x20AC;? at 10 a.m. with a 10k and 5k run through the tree-lined streets of the West End Historic District. It will start and finish at Patriots Park. A new entry to the west side of the park has been finished, in conjunction with the new restroom facilities and newly dedicated Patriots Memorial, and will be utilized in the race course. The Kings Mountain Historical Museum will also have activities planned for Saturday, Dec. 1 with an encampment of Civil War reenactors with the 38th NC Regiment, and a variety of period craft demonstrations, at the Commons behind the main exhibit hall. Following

the annual Christmas parade, the museum will re-open for candlelight tours of the Robert Barber Log House. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;Toys, Games & Trainsâ&#x20AC;? exhibit and model railway will be open throughout the holiday season as well. The Southern Arts Society will be open throughout the Christmas season with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Art for Christmasâ&#x20AC;? at the old Southern Railway Station. This depot has been transformed from a gallery to a holiday gift shop full of artistic, unique gift items handmade by local artists. Affordable art abounds! Also on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., there will be a reception and Dutch treat luncheon at 238 Cherokee Grill (the old Battleground building) honoring Greco-Roman wrestler, Olympic Champion and former Kings Mountain resident Dremiel â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bamm Bammâ&#x20AC;? Byers. This will be an opportunity for the community to welcome and congratulate Bamm Bamm on his Olympic and Team USA wrestling successes. This 1993 graduate of Kings Mountain High School will later be escorted by the high school wrestling team during the annual Kings Mountain Christmas Parade. The annual Kings Mountain Christmas Parade will also be a part of the Dec. 1 activities, beginning at 3 p.m. Over 100 entries are ex-

pected including the Greenville CYO, the Loch Norman Pipe Band and the Kings Mountain High School Marching Band. Leading off the parade will be the color guard from the Marine Corps League NC Foothills Detachment 1164. Veterans are welcome to ride in the Marine transport truck in the parade. From the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ghost Bustersâ&#x20AC;? white Cadillac ambulance to dignitaries, beauty queens and some of the best local dance groups, in all their Christmas sparkles, will be joining the other participants in one of the largest parades in the county. Of course, Santa will be there in his Fire Truck Express! The Express will also make a stop on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 1-3 p.m. at the Kings Mountain Historical Museum for a final check on those Christmas lists, and the children will have the opportunity to see a huge HO scale train set up. And, on Christmas Eve, luminarias will

Lawnmower parade set for Dec. 16 Woodbridge Community residents will parade on decorated lawnmowers, bikes, classical cars, on a hay ride, and golf carts in the Charlie Gane Memorial Woodbridge Lawnmower Christmas Parade Sunday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. The parade starts at the top of Dunes Drive and travels onto Canterbury, Quail Hollow and other streets in the Woodbridge area. Dr. Jeff Hensley Pastor Kings Mountain Baptist Church Now I know that many Christians are uncomfortable with books like the Harry Potter series, but like other contemporary works of fiction, there are interesting elements in these books that may suggest some valuable spiritual themes, and we can appreciate those themes even if we don’t accept the strange world presented in the books. One of the interesting elements found in the fictional world of Harry Potter is a device known as the Pensieve. The Pensieve was a stone basin that was covered with

mystical symbols and it permitted anyone who used it to view memories that had been previously stored in the form of glowing silver threads. A Pensieve would allow a person to view past memories in a sort of virtual reality fashion, almost as if they were real again, and these memories could be either their own or those of others. Although it might be nice to be able to have a wand that you could use as a flashlight at one moment or a tool to accomplish almost any other task at another moment, or an invisibility cloak under which you could hide and eavesdrop on the conversations of others, I tend to think I would prefer to have a Pensieve so as to relive my memories as if they were living realities. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Pensieve is that it per-

mitted people to see memories in their purest form. It didn’t matter if a person hadn’t remembered something exactly or failed to notice certain details in the first place, for the Pensieve corrected such human frailties and revealed events as they actually happened. Real memories are rarely like that because we all view events, activities and experiences from our own vantage point, and it is extremely difficult for us to stand completely outside of our own perspective and see life the way others experience it, or “walk in their shoes,” as people sometimes say. Now we human beings may need a special tool like a Pensieve in order to see life in its purest form, but Jesus did not need such a device in order to see each of us for who we really are. In fact, Jesus could look into a per-

son’s eyes and see their very thoughts, and so he really knew and knows what it is like to walk in our shoes. This also seems to suggest that God’s memory is crystal clear and no detail escapes God’s perception. This being the case, the promise that God’s forgiveness is accompanied by the assurance that He will “remember” our “sins no more” (e.g. Isaiah 43:25; Jeremiah 31:34; Hebrews 8:12) becomes all the more important. After all, God remembers even the minutest moment of our lives, and so it is an act of sheer grace that God chooses not to remember our sins. This is the sort of forgiveness that all of us need – the kind of forgiveness that forgets our sins so completely that even a Pensieve can’t recover them.

You never get too old for Christmas. Children, young and old alike, are enjoying the Kings Mountain Historical Museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual â&#x20AC;&#x153;Toys, Games, and Trainsâ&#x20AC;? exhibit. The exhibit, which opened Saturday, Nov. 24, is an exhibit that folks look forward to each Christmas season. The museum is decked out for Christmas, welcoming everyone who enters. Old Salem Moravian cookies and cheese straws are available for purchase in the museum gift shop. The exhibit this year has expanded to include dolls, games, and other toys from years gone by. There are dolls from the 1930s with painted faces and hand made clothing. One of the dolls is modeled after Sonja Henie, a three-time Norwegian Olympic figure skating champion (1928, 1932, 1936). The Henie doll is on loan from Pat Plonk. There is a replica of Kings Mountain Farm Center, which was Ted Ledfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s store, circa 1954. It is on loan from Margaret Ledford. Many of the furnishings were made by the owner. A Howdy Doody board game is on loan from Pucky Nantz. Most of the toys are on loan from Kings Mountain residents or belong to the KMHM or Earl Scruggs Center and Cleveland County Historical Society.

But what brings people back, year after year, is the interactive train exhibit which is set up by the Piedmont â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Gaugers. With a push of a button, kids of all ages can make a Ferris wheel spin around, launch a hot air balloon, as well as push buttons for other interactive features. The trains run around a small town and a wooded area covered with snow. There is a burning house with fire trucks and firemen putting out the fire. At the train station, people are hustling

around, possibly waiting on the train. The holiday exhibits will be on display until Jan. 5. * On Dec. 1, there will be Civil War re-enactors from 10 am â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2pm. Demonstrations include paper cutting, weaving, and spinning. From 5:30 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 8:30 pm, there will be candlelight tours of the Robert Barber Home. * On Dec. 15, Santa will be at the museum from 1 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 3 pm. The historic Henry Howzer House was open to the public Saturday. The house is owned by the National Park Service and borders Kings Mountain National Military Park. Throughout the day, there were two shuttles, pulled by tractors, to transport visitors from the parking lot to the home site. It was a refreshing ride, with a little chill in the air. The shuttles were provided by Ed Brownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rodeo of Blacksburg, and Buford Street Hardware of Gaffney. On the ride to the house, the Howzer family graveyard could be seen on the right. Arriving at the home site, one saw volunteers from the South Carolina Rangers and Kings Mountain Chamber of Commerce dressed in full costume from the Revolutionary War era. They were ready to provide information, or just a seat around the fire to chat. Inside the house, there were area artisans demonstrating their talents. KM girls open season with OT win over Shelby By GARY STEWART Kings Mountain High’s girls won only three games all of last basketball season, but got their 2012-13 season off to an exciting start Tuesday night at Donald L. Parker Gymnasium with a 52-48 overtime win over the Shelby Lady Lions. The Lady Mountaineers got outstanding play from several players, including last year’s go-to player Monique Petty, Taquisha Smith and newcomers Tiffani Thompson and Alecia Wade. Petty dominated play inside against a taller Shelby team with game-highs of 18 points and 25 rebounds. Thompson, a freshman who led Kings Mountain Middle School to the TriCounty Conference championship last season, chipped in 17 points and 20 rebounds. Wade, a junior transfer from Burns, scored only two points but was also a force inside, grabbing 12 rebounds and making several big plays in the fourth period as the KM ladies came from behind. Smith, who finished with eight points, got some key points from the wing and inside drives in the fourth quarter. Shelby broke out to an early lead and held the upper hand at the end of each of the first three quarters. The Lions were out front 13-6 at the first quarter break, 22-18 at intermission and 36-31 going into the fourth period. But strong inside play by the Lady Mountaineers brought them from behind in the final four minutes of regulation. They tied the game at 44-all with 2:29 remaining when Thompson rebounded two of her own missed shots,

Kings Mountain High placed five players on the All-Big South 3A Conference football team for the 2012 season. Mountaineers selected by the league coaches were senior quarterback Jonathan Clark, senior running back/defensive back Michael Douglas, junior running back DaShon Guest, sophomore offensive lineman Graham Keeter and sophomore wide receiver Xavier Johnson. Clark, a two-year all-conference selection, finished his Mountaineer career as the school’s all-time career passing leader. He hit 162 of 298 passes for 2,125 yards his senior year to give him a career total of 4,131 yards. He broke the old record of 3,921 yards set by Michael Roberts from 2005-2008. Roberts was a quarterback coach for the Mountaineers this season. Guest led the Mountaineers in rushing with 1,397 yards and scoring with 104 points. He became the 22nd player in Mountaineer history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. He also caught 18 passes for 294 yards. Johnson had a school single-season record of 55 pass receptions. He accumulated 871 yards in the air, the most ever for a sophomore. Petty hit a free throw with 1:45 remaining to give the Mountaineers a 50-48 lead. Shelby missed several shots down the stretch and each time Thompson, Petty or Wade would get the rebound. Sophomore Talajah Hutchens hit the second of two free throws to put KM up 51-48 with 40 seconds remaining. Thompson rebounded a missed Shelby 3-point attempt with 17 seconds left, and Hutchens was able to hit one of two free throws with 10 seconds left for the final margin. First-year head coach Mike Harris, who assisted Amos Myles last season, was ecstatic to see his youngsters win on their first night out. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The girls were relentless tonight,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For the most part we played pretty good defense. We need to learn to take care of the ball better on offense.â&#x20AC;? The Lady Mountaineers

will likely be spending a lot of practice time trying to eliminate turnovers and being more consistent from the foul line. They hit only 15 of 34 from the foul line and turned the ball over 33 times. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too much,â&#x20AC;? Harris said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I have to give the girls credit. Even when they let the tempo of the game get away from them, they went back and got a defensive stop. They just need to learn how to win and we took a step towards that tonight. They did a good job holding Shelby scoreless in overtime. That was a nice way to start the season.â&#x20AC;? Kings Mountainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boys won the opening tip and took a 2-0 lead, but it was all Shelby after that as Aubrey Hollifieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2A power dominated the Mountaineers 9055. Shelby ran to a 26-4 first quarter lead and was on top 46-19 at intermission. The Lions led 70-36 going into the fourth quarter. Two returning starters who led the Lions to the 2A state semifinals last season put on a shooting and defen-

sive exhibition. Gabe DeVoe led all scorers with 26 points and Donte Falls scored 24 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked five shots. Shelby hit 67% from the floor, including 74% from two-point land. Junior James Tillman was Kings Mountainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only force inside with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Chad Sanders, making his first varsity start, added 10 points. The Kings Mountain teams were scheduled to host East Gaston last night. They travel to Cherryville Friday and Burns Tuesday. He started in the defensive secondary, and after Trevin Torres went down to injury midway of the season he began spending time at receiver and running back. Inauguration tickets 10th District US Congressman Patrick McHenry’s office has set up a website for constituents to request tickets for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Tickets to the inauguration can only be obtained through congressional offices, and the website will provide an easy to use system for those interested in attending the event. The office will distribute the tickets through a lottery which constituents can enter until Dec. 17.
