Kings Mountain is proud to welcome Cleveland County's finest, Dirty Grass Soul to Patriots Park, on Saturday, October 14. Formed in 2011, Dirty Grass Soul has earned a reputation as one of the southeast's emerging Southern Rock/Alt. Country bands with their music falling somewhere between country, bluegrass, and southern rock & roll, reminiscent of acts like The Charlie Daniels Band and The Marshall Tucker Band. “We are very excited to bring DGS to play in Kings Mountain,” states founder and lead singer Kevin Dedmon. “Anytime we get to perform close to home is a bonus, and Patriots Park has a great amphitheater where folks in Cleveland County can bring out the entire family to watch a show.” CBMA nominees, The Main Event Band, along with DJ Drew Fulton, will open the show. turns 106 Friday By Loretta Cozart Bess Phifer will enjoy her 106th birthday with family and friends on Friday, October 13. As a child, she was called Bess Alice by everyone. Her family attended Antioch Baptist Church and she attended school in a one-room schoolhouse her mother founded. She grew up near Kings Mountain National Military Park, but the land was not owned by the National Park back then. Everyone around
here just called it the battleground. When Bess was 12, she attended the one-hundredfifth anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. The year was 1930. President Herbert Hoover was the keynote speaker. Her mother had responsibilities during the celebration, so Bess and her siblings were free to wander. She remembers the throngs of people. “The President's speech was good; I remember seeing the speakers stand. Most of all,” she said, “I remember having the whole day free with all those people I didn’t know” See HAMBRIGHT, PAGE 5A
Last week, the City of Kings Mountain released a video after changing the stop pattern at Cansler St. and W. Gold St. to a new 4-way stop. According to Police Chief Gerald Childress, the intersection was changed due to recent crashes and near misses. As you drive East toward downtown on West Gold Street and approach the intersection at Cansler Street, be aware that the stop sign is placed before the crosswalk. This was done because the crosswalk is at an odd angle, and pedestrians always have the right-of-way. After ensuring the crosswalk is clear, drivers can proceed to the intersection,
Police Chief Gerald Childress warns citizens to be careful at the new four-way stop at Cansler and West Mountain Streets stopping again before proceeding. The stop bar is scheduled for installation
but has not been completed. Chief Childress reminds everyone, “Remember, at
a four-way stop sign, the driver to the right always has the right of way.”

From Page 1A After college, Bess became a teacher. During the throws of World War II, she did her part by knitting hats and gloves for servicemen. She even worked in the Charlotte Shell Plant. But her heart called her to do more. She spoke with her principal when she heard she could support the war effort by serving in the Red Cross overseas. She applied for and was accepted into the Red Cross with his permission. She worked in Hilo and was stationed at a Rest Camp in Hawaii National Park, where the soldiers returning from the war were on R&R. Soldiers got five days off to enjoy golf, crafts, archery, biking, reading, and horseback riding. Bess’ job was to boost morale and she worked 15-hour days. While working in Hawaii, Bess met her husband-to-be, Marriott Phifer, a Kings Moun-
tain native. Due to her duties, she didn’t see him much when he was at the camp. When asked if they ever dated in the Pacific, Bess replied, “When they told me they needed me to go to Guam, I got a week off. I spent a right smart time with Marriott that week.” The next week, she was in Guam. While there, Bess was assigned to a field hospital processing the troops freed from prison camps. “Most had spent four or five years as prisoners. And to see those fellows…” her voice trailed off. “I stayed up all night trying to process who they were, to gather a little information about them. “They looked like death standing, practically every one of them. I had seen a lot of wounded because, at Guam, I stayed at the field hospital. There were 200 – 300 doctors there. I ate in the same places the men ate. In that hospital, all the wounded fellows were there. They couldn’t go home because they were waiting for transportation.
The Kings Mountain Herald | www.kmherald.com “All those fellows and no complaints from them,” she pauses. “That was what I noticed the most; they didn’t complain. Some were missing legs and arms. None in the beds could get up. “I helped set up a place where the guys could have a magazine to read or listen to a radio. These guys hadn’t had radios or anything for years. Some of them didn’t even know who they were.” When discharged and on her way stateside, Lieutenant Bess Alice Hambright witnessed General Douglas McArthur signing the Peace Treaty on the USS Missouri. She spent the next 28 days traveling home to her family. After the war, she returned home to Hambright Road and married Marriott Phifer in a double wedding with her sister. Together, Bess and Marriott had four children: Dr. Reta Phifer, Doyt Phifer, Connie Savell, and M.D. Phifer Jr., along with one granddaughter, Lesley Phifer.

Free photo ID Cards available for voters Registered voters who do not have an acceptable identification card for voting in North Carolina can now go to their county board of elections office to get a free ID. Most voters have a North Carolina driver’s license, an acceptable form of photo ID for voting. Those voters do not need to obtain a separate ID from their county board. Other common forms of acceptable ID include military or veterans ID cards issued by the federal government and college student and public employer ID cards that the State Board approved for use in voting. For a full list of acceptable forms of photo ID for voting, see the State Board’s website at Voter ID. Registered voters who do not have an acceptable form of identification for voting purposes can now get a free photo ID from their county board of
elections office. No special documents a r e needed. Voters will simply provide their name, date of birth, and the last four digits of their Social Security number, and have their photo taken. In most counties, voters can get an ID printed and given to them on the spot. A few counties may need to get the required information from the voter, take their photo, then mail the ID card to the voter or inform the voter that the ID card is ready to be picked up, whichever the voter prefers. Voters with questions about the ID process should contact their county board of elections. A free voter photo ID will include the voter’s photo, name, and registration num-
ber. They will expire 10 years from the date of issuance. The county boards of elections can issue cards at any time during regular business hours, except for the period following the last day of early voting through Election Day. “Any voter who does not have an acceptable ID card for voting can now get a free ID from their county board of elections,” said Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board of Elections. “State Board staff has worked diligently with the county boards of elections over the past couple of months to get the necessary software and hardware for ID printing.” Voters also can get a free ID from the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). Find more information under “No-Fee ID Cards” at State IDs | NCDMV.

Also, get one gallon of olive oil. Like a skilled incense maker, blend these ingredients to make a holy anointing oil.” Consecration and healing were the principal purposes for anointing oil. It is symbolic of the Holy Spirit’s presence and power. Many still use anointing oil today to pray for the sick according to James 5:14 (ESV). It states, “Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord.” Ginger Ginger, my second favorite

Likewise, we must snap out of any indifference, rebellion, or lethargicness and ask the Lord to make us spicy for him. Our world is full of hurting people, who desperately need others that have a burning heart for God’s word and serving, despite their own personal difficulties. Jeremiah 20:9 (NLT), “But if I say I’ll never mention the LORD or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Lord I praise you because you loved me and gave yourself up for me as an offering and sacri-

Lord, I ask for a fresh touch of your Holy Spirit. LIBERTY MOUNTAIN – The Revolutionary Drama had a packed house during their Thursday, October 5, school performance. One of the primary reasons for moving the show to the fall was to share this story with students across the Carolinas. Liberty Mountain hosted students from Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, Kings Mountain High School, Caldwell County, Blacksburg, and homeschool groups. The cast, crew, and creative team are dedicated to keeping our Revolutionary history alive. After the performance, students had the chance to engage in a Q&A talkback with performers from the show.

Mountaineers host Cramer in homecoming game Friday
KMHS football coach Strait Herron talks to his team after its come from behind 28-14 win over South Point Friday night in Belmont’s Lineberger Stadium. Photos by Charlie Smith
Mountaineer comeback beats South Point 28-14 Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers knew going into the game Friday in Belmont that South Point would be their biggest test so far in the Big South 3A Conference and it proved to be. The Mountaineers had to come back from a 14-7 deficit in the second half to win 28-14 and remain undefeated and tied with the Crest Chargers for first place. Most fans feel like both teams will still be unbeaten and determine the BSC championship when the Chargers come to KM’s John Gamble Stadium for the final regular season game on October 27 at 7:30 p.m. But neither the Mountaineers nor the Chargers can be thinking about that yet. KM has a homecoming game against Stuart Cramer Friday night and will go to Gastonia Ashbrook next week before they can think about Crest. Crest will face Forestview at home this week and Hunter Huss away next week. “I was really pleased
Kings Mountain defense blocks a punt in last week’s game with the South Point Red Raiders in Belmont. The Mountaineers are back home this week for a homecoming game against Stuart Cramer. with how hard our guys played,” Coach Strait Herron said of his team’s effort against the always-tough Raiders. “We did a good job keeping our composure and just playing the game. South Point seems to be down a bit but I think they could still get in the playoffs as an atlarge team and, if they do, they will be tough.” Kings Mountain scored on the game’s opening possession at Belmont’s Line-
berger Field, driving the opening kickoff 73 yards in eight plays to score on a nine-yard run by Josiah Hill. Max Thompson’s point-after put the visitors up 7-0. But the Red Raiders had their flex bone working to perfection and answered with a 60-yard, nine-play drive to tie the game on Chanyce Ford’s 13-yard run and Charlie Birtwistle’s PAT. The Mountaineers
blocked a South Point field goal attempt with three seconds left in the half and the teams went into the break at 7-all. KM’s Javier Curry blocked another South Point field goal attempt in the third period but the Mountaineers were flagged for a personal foul and Blee scored on the next play to put the home team up 14-7 with just 5 ½ minutes left in the third.
Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers return to John Gamble Stadium Friday night for their annual homecoming game. Stuart Cramer is the opponent for the 7:30 p.m. contest. Prior to the game Kings Mountain players, cheerleaders and others will be involved in the annual homecoming parade in downtown KM but the players and coaches have to be focused on their opponent. Even though Stuart Cramer is in last place in the Big South Conference with no wins thus far, the coaches’ and players’ focus has to be on the ball game. “Honestly, the main thing is that we have to be trying to get our stuff ready this week,” Coach Strait Herron said. “I haven’t seen them (Cramer) a lot but I know they’re going to spread it out on offense and they play man like we do on defense.
“Defensively, we really won’t be doing anything special,” he added. “We just have to win up front. Their running game looks impressive and they’ll put extra guys up there. “We just have to play our game,” he said. “There’s a homecoming parade that I didn’t know about until recently. We just hope to get all our guys as healthy as possible.” The Mountaineers will probably have the services of last year’s leading rusher Teddy Jeffries. He was recently given his doctor’s okay to return and is practicing with his teammates this week. Robert Kendrick, who is also one of the Mountaineers’ best defensive players, has started at Jeffries’ running back position since his injury and sophomore Josiah Hill has also turned into a good varsity running back.
The Mountaineers had another long scoring drive stopped on a fumble, but the Raiders fumbled it right back and it took the Mountaineers just three plays to tie the game at 14-all on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Kandan Zollo to Rodney Unnasch. The Mountaineer defense came up big to stop another Raider field goal attempt with 8:22 left in the game and that seemed to give the offense the lift it needed to put the game away. Taking over on their own 20, the Mountaineers got a 64-yard Zollo to Jayden Gash pass for a first down at the South Point 21 and it took just two runs by Kendrick – the latter for 19 yards
– to put KM up 21-14. The Mountaineer defense got some big stops with tackles by Simpson and Eli Lipscomb to force a three-and-out with 4:48 left and the offense drove 67 yards to put the game in the bag. Kendrick handled most of the running duties and Hill went up the middle for five yards for the TD. Thompson added the PAT to account for the final margin. With less than a minute remaining, South Point was trying desperately to make something happen. Simpson put heavy pressure on Blee and he fumbled and left the game with a leg injury. KM’s Zollo took a knee to end the game. See COMEBACK Page 2B

Meile Songaila and Myracle Davis were strong along the nets with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Songaila also had three digs, 10 serve receptions and six service points and Davis also had a block. Camden Pasour dished out 33 assists and also provided three kills, five digs and five service points. Alexa Jones had three kills, three assists, eight digs, six serve receptions and 15 service points. London Brown had six kills and two blocks. The JV team also swept the Lady Wildcats 25-5 and
25-6. Campbell Benton had five kills, two serve receptions, three service points and two digs. Abigail Hedgepath had 10 assists, two digs and 10 service points and Ruby Osborne had six kills. Both KM teams are undefeated in the Big South with the varsity standing 11-0 and 24-1 overall. The JVs are 9-0 in the conference and 13-1 overall. Kings Mountain was scheduled to host Legion Collegiate Monday and travel to Forestview Tuesday. The Lady Mountaineers will host South Point October 12 in their final regular season home match and will close out BSC play October 17 at Crest. The state playoffs begin October 21 and KM should be at home.
Raiders for 6th victory After Lathan Feemster recovered a South Point fumble on the first offensive play of the game at the Red Raiders’ 37 yard line, running back Savion Lindsay covered the distance on KM’s first play of the night for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead that propelled the JV Mountaineers to a 24-6 win Thursday at John Gamble Stadium. The win was the Mountaineers’ sixth straight following an opening-season loss to the Shelby Golden Lions. Lindsay would go on to a 117-yard first half performance and finish the night with 195 yards on 24 carries as the Mountaineers ran their overall record to 4-0

South Point took the ensuing kickoff and took just three plays to score with the TD coming on a 66-yard touchdown catch and run by Jax Lathe with 9:13 left in the game. Jakelyn Littlejohn had a key first down with a 12yard run and completed a 12-yard pass to set up two runs of five yards each by Lindsay for the TD. The line played really well and we ran the ball well for a lot of yards. We would have had only 111 yards rushing without the faked punt. “Jo Jo (Hill) did well,” Herron noted. “He ran the ball seven times for 74

Dom Davis, a sophomore, played very well. After the first play when he got his knees buckled he came on pretty good the rest of the game. And Matt Rikard also had a good game. “Defensively, we had a bunch of guys that had some big stops. Thomas Fair blocked a kick and Javier Curry did a good job at nose guard to help plug up the middle, and he blocked a kick. Melton had 17 tackles and our linebackers played really well.”

Wreaths Across America NC Medicaid Expansion Day December 16 launches December 1
By Loretta Cozart
Local DAR volunteers have worked all year to ensure veterans laid to rest at Mountain Rest Cemetery are honored on National Wreaths Across America Day this December. This year’s ceremony, held simultaneously across the country at more than 2,500 participating locations, will be on Saturday, December 16, at noon, as the Col. Frederick Hambright DAR Chapter hosts a wreath laying at Mountain Rest Cemetery. But the DAR Chapter can’t do all this work alone. Each wreath sponsorship is $17, and 1,300 veterans reside at the cemetery. “We are honored to spend Wreaths Across America Day honoring our veterans at Christmastime. We need the help of citizens to honor each veteran at Mountain Rest Cemetery, whether it be for their family member, a friend, or someone they might not even know. These are ‘our veterans,’ and we want to thank them for their service,” said DAR event organizer Renee Bost.

The event is open to the public. All veterans, active-duty military, their families, and the local community are invited to attend. The event will help teach the next

generation about the services and sacrifices of our nation’s military. Executive Director Karen Worcester of Wreaths Across America said, “With each local event held nationwide, volunteers help build community awareness and understanding of the organization's year-long mission to Honor, Teach. Considering the current health crisis, we feel events like this have taken on even more meaning by providing the opportunity for people to safely participate in something that is both educational and fun while supporting and giving back to the community when it is needed most.” For more information, call 704-477-7006.
Governor Roy Cooper and NC Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kody H. Kinsley announced on September 25 that DHHS will launch Medicaid Expansion on Dec. 1, giving more than 600,000 North Carolinians access to health care. “Finally expanding Medicaid in North Carolina is a monumental achievement that will extend health insurance to people who need it,” said Governor Cooper. “This means better health care, including those with mental health and substance use disorders, hope for rural hospitals struggling to stay open and billions of dollars for our economy. This action is long overdue, and we aren’t wasting a moment in beginning enrollment in North Carolina.” On Friday, Governor Cooper announced that he would allow the state budget passed by the General Assembly to become law and directed NCDHHS to immediately begin the process to start Medicaid expansion in North Carolina. Even while the budget stalled in the state legislature, NCDHHS worked
with county and community partners to be ready to launch so people could get the care they desperately needed as soon as possible. On Friday, Governor Cooper and Sec. Kinsley spoke with federal leaders of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services about
the urgent need to begin enrollment. “This work will yield results,” Governor Cooper said. On Dec. 1, 2023, the Department anticipates approximately 300,000 eligible people currently receiving Medicaid Family See MEDICAID, Page 5B

On April 6, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office responded to a death investigation at 154 Racine Drive, Waco, NC. Deputies identified the deceased as Clifford Wade Ward, who resided at that address. The victim was located outside in his yard by a friend who had come to the residence. Clifford was found deceased with a metal object in the back of his head. Deputies who responded to the scene became suspicious of the cause of death and requested the Criminal Investigations Division respond to the scene. Initial interviews of the victim’s nephew indicated that Clifford was prone to falling. The nephew had initially led investigators to believe that Clifford possibly had a falling incident that caused him to fall backwards on a metal object. The State Medical Examiner’s Office notified investigators the following day that the victim had a gunshot wound in the back of the head, and the metal object had been placed in the victim after death to conceal the crime. David Ward (nephew) quickly be-
DAVID ERIC WARD came a person of interest in the case. As the Sheriff’s Office continued their investigation, they learned that on the same day as the victim’s death, that the nephew deposited a check into his account for a large sum of money from the victim. In this five-month investigation the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office conducted multiple search warrants, interviews, and processed multiple items of evidence which have led to the arrest of David Eric Ward for the murder of his uncle, Clifford Wade Ward. He is being held with no bond in the Cleveland County Detention Center.

NC Law enforcement cracking down on speeding The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program reminds drivers to follow the speed limit as part of 'Operation Crash Reduction' from Oct. 9-15. The annual campaign enforces safe driving during one of the deadliest months of the year for fatal vehicle crashes. Motorists may notice increased law enforcement efforts to crack down on speeding motorists and bring awareness to unsafe speeds in communities statewide next week, including radar operations and speed display signs. “Ensuring the safety of all drivers is our highest priority,” said Mark Ezzell, director of N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program. “We are urging everyone
to slow down and obey the posted roadway signs. The choices you make behind the wheel can help save lives.” The campaign is part of a greater effort led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to target speed, distraction, and impairment in North Carolina, Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C. This area of the country is prone to the nation’s highest number of traffic crash fatalities during the early fall. More North Carolina drivers take to the roads in October for seasonal-related activities. The high-trafficked period is popular for festivals, football games,
and fall foliage. Statistics show that October is the deadliest month to be on the road. Each October from 2017-2021, North Carolina has experienced an average of 148 fatalities, more on average than the second most deadly month, November. Twenty-nine percent of the 12,330 people who died in motor vehicle crashes nationwide in 2021 were related to speeding. “Speeding accounts for nearly one-third of all fatalities on our roads and puts everyone at risk,” said NHTSA’s Acting Administrator Ann Carlson. “Speed limits aren’t a suggestion; they are the law.”
