Tim Moore announces running for Congress By Loretta Cozart Last week, North Carolina Speaker of the House Tim Moore officially announced his candidacy for Congress in the 14th Congressional district, covering portions of the southwestern corner of North Carolina. Moore was elected to the NC House in 2002; since 2016, he has served as Speaker of the House. He opened the announcement by saying, “Hi, I’m Tim Moore. I want to let you know it is official. I’m running for the United States Congress. I’ve been proud to serve with a conservative Republican majority in the State House for the last nine years as Speaker. And now, I’m ready to take that same

KM Fantasy Light Show cancelled By Loretta Cozart In a Facebook post last week, Jeff Ward announced the Kings Mountain Fantasy Light Show was canceled. As a result, 296 comments were left by citizens who expressed concern about the light show’s cancellation less than a day after the polls closed and Mayor Scott Neisler lost his re-election bid. Conspiracy theories and finger-pointing ran rampant. The Star ran an article only fanning the flames further. Politics, construction, the city, and the building’s past and present owners were blamed. The new restaurant Crave, coming to Kings Mountain, began construction last week on the building where lights had been mounted. In addition, a tree that once held lights as part of the light show had also

Meet Rob Wagman By Loretta Cozart On November 7, Rob Wagman won his first bid for Mayor against an incumbent whose family founded Kings Mountain 149 years ago. Not a small fete in a small town of 11,000 people where folks like knowing their leaders and feel comfortable they will lead the town while keeping their interests in mind. The Herald sat down with Rob Wagman over breakfast last week to learn more about the new mayor and what drives him. We asked five questions about his leadership approach, hobbies and interests, favorite local spot in town, thoughts on technology and innovation, and what he wants his legacy to be as mayor. 1. How would you describe your leadership style, and what values do you believe are crucial for effective leadership in a mayor's role? To lead is to listen. I am honored to transition into this role as Mayor of Kings Mountain. What the residents will notice in my leadership style is that I hear them, and while that won't always mean resolution for their specific issues, it will mean strengthened communication. They will not feel ignored. As a leader, encouragement is at the heart of how I lead; I empower those who have gifts and skills to use them for the greater good so that when implemented in a team atmosphere, those gifts and skills in action allow us to reach and exceed goals. 2. Outside of your mayoral duties, what are some of your personal hobbies or interests that help you relax and stay grounded? On my back on my bed at age 26, when a life of ego, drinking, and drugs led me to the brink of homelessness, I called out to a God whom I wasn't sure even existed, and He did something surreal. He answered. He calmed my heart, mind, and soul, and over the course of 32 years, He has healed some deep

wounds. I find my peace and grounding in the faith of Jesus, a faith He made real by whispering into my soul. As an on-the-go dad, I often move too fast in my work and don't share enough downtime with my wife, Sarah Lee, and our two sons. I have been finding the greatest joy in fishing with the family, building birdhouses, planting gardens, and making them the priority. 3. Do you have a favorite local spot or a hidden gem you recommend to residents and visitors? The Kings Mountain Gateway Trail is a great way to exercise and clear your head. And it has some spectacular views, including our downtown, which can be seen clearly from the top of Cardio Hill. With each season, we take in something new there, from a sanctuary for butterflies to a family of beavers relocating twigs. We have grown attached to both the butterflies and beavers, and we were elated to find that both are federally protected wildlife. 4. In what ways do you see technology playing a role in the city's development, and how do you plan to leverage innovation to benefit residents? Money doesn't rule a city; ideas do, and the cost of an idea is free. So let's dream big and refrain from saying no to anything too fast just because we don't have the experience of that circumstance just yet. Something that stood out to me during the streetscape project on West Mountain Street was that the vision The rights-of-way purchased will still be utilized for connectivity, and lift stations will be required to pump water up Kings Mountain Blvd. and to the

cast for our downtown was limited, that of a 'brick and mortar' mentality, meaning physical stores and shops and restaurants, which will help our downtown look better and grow, but eCommerce has destroyed many good corporations and numerous downtowns throughout the South and the US. Done right, we can have beautiful storefronts with local businesses that are bustling online beyond the foot traffic, whether light or heavy. As a city, we could combine our online eCommerce efforts, local retail, and outlets working together for a common cause of growth, beautification, and prosperity. 5. Looking ahead, what legacy do you hope to leave for future generations in our city, and how would you like to be remembered as a mayor? The legacy of your mayor is less important than the residents who are already doing great work. Martha Lou Wells, in my opinion, is Kings Mountain royalty. This treasured queen walks daily with discipline, taking care of herself and her health, and by the time her walk is complete, she has picked up ALL the trash along her route. Could you imagine if there wasn't just one who cared and had as much respect for this city as she has, but a village of people just like her? This town would change for the better quickly. I admire the work of Maurice and Brandy Tate and the way they pour into our children through their KM Elite program, creating a strong character in our youth with a byproduct of competitive sports at all ages throughout our city. Sometimes, we get caught up in where we ended in the playoffs, and we forget to watch the real victory, which is to witness the many scholarships that these athletes have been able to secure over the last five years for a continued education that may not have been available to them otherwise. Good character is everything. Pilot Creek plant. Moreover, there will be nine miles of forced main, which cannot be tapped into. A Force Main is a pipe that carries wastewater under pressure from the discharge side of a pump to a point of gravity flow downstream. Unfortunately, due to a technical glitch recording this work session and the city's Veteran's Day observance, more details were unavailable. The Herald is closely following this story and will share more details when they become available.

Pieces of Kings Mountain History

Hayne Neisler shared some history this week that many here LORETTA had never COZART heard. Present-day Kings Mountain was divided into two towns in 1907: Kings Mountain and East Kings Mountain. Hayne shared the story: “Since the city elections are now over, looking back, probably the most spirited election that ever took place in Kings Mountain was in 1915. In 1907, the General Assembly in Raleigh permitted the town of Kings Mountain to be split into two towns: Kings Mountain and East Kings Mountain.

“East Kings Mountain stood around the Cora and Lula Mills near present-day East Elementary School and Linwood Road. Mr. James L. Mauney was elected Mayor with the following elected to the town council: J.R Roberts, P.M. Keller, J.D. Payne, and C.R. Harmon. A police officer was hired, J.C. Plummer. The town said its first act was constructing a graded school where East Elementary now stands. Teachers were Miss Carlyle Ware- 1st grade, Miss Estelle Willeford; 2nd grade, Mrs. Kate Provence; 3rd grade, Miss Eliza Stowe; 4th grade; and Mrs. Irma Reid 5th grade. Principal was Miss Irma Willford. “In 1915, an election

was held to decide if East Kings Mountain would be placed in Gaston County or be reincorporated into the town of Kings Mountain and remain in Cleveland. The election drew high feelings on both sides: Gaston County was eager to add a growing town of over 1,000 citizens and four cotton mills to its tax base, and Cleveland County politicians were afraid they would lose a seat in the state House to the expense of Gaston County. “W.A Mauney, who served in the State House at that time, supported Cleveland County, and the measure to reincorporate into the town of Kings Mountain and stay in

LETTER TO EDITOR Letter to the editor Broad River Genealogical Society has been fundraising for many years to build a larger facility. At the present time, we cannot shelve our total book collection and files; so many items remain boxed and unavailable to our patrons. While we made efforts to accommodate our growing needs by purchasing a storage building for equipment and obtaining a storage locker, we have been unable to acquire adequate space in our cur-

rent situation. Just in the past month, we received genealogy collections from three different families. Our collection and membership continued to grow, but our facility remained the same – until a miracle happened on November 2, 2023. Several months ago, we applied for a grant from the State of North Carolina With encouragement and guidance from our Senator Ted Alexander. We were advised the funding amount was unclear and would only be

finalized when the new appropriations budget was completed. We anxiously ‘chomped at the bit’ Awaiting news and finally received notification that we could expect at least $10,000.00. We were happy and grateful, but a little disappointed since that amount plus our small building fund would not provide adequate revenue for the new facility we desperately needed. BRGS Vice-President Dolores Ashworth received a call shortly thereafter See LETTER, Page 5A

Looking Back

Plonk, Kiser, and Company opened for business in 1899. See more photos on page 5A. Photo by DigitalNC Plonk, Kiser, and Company opened its doors for business in 1899 on Railroad Avenue in downtown Kings Mountain, and this building housed retail shops during most of its history. On December 12, 1947, a remodeled Plonk and Co. reopened in downtown Kings Mountain, as the business district underwent a revitalization after World

War II. The first awning in town was installed at that time, and black glass panels were added to the front façade to modernize it. The building stood empty in recent years, a shell of what once was a hub of commerce in this section. But the future is looking brighter for this building, as Crave Hot Dogs and BBQ began

renovations last week. The 1945 facade was torn away, along with the display windows, and the front wall recessed. According to owner Chris Catania, construction will be ongoing with hopes of completion around the first of the year. The sign also notes that apartment leasing is available, expanding residential loft space downtown.

Forgive and forget? Not in this world! Some people try to forgive but they never forget. The people of Israel will never Glenn Mollette Guest Editorial forget the Oct. 7 massacre by Hamas which barbarically took the lives of over 1,400 people. The goal of Israel now is to eliminate Hamas by whatever means it takes. In the process of Israel now avenginwg their rage, innocent civilian Palestinians are being killed by Israel’s aggression. Thousands are being killed. What is this doing to the minds of the Palestinians? Palestinians who survive Israel’s aggression will forever have an internal malice and hate toward Israel that will never be forgotten. Most likely many, if not all, of the Palestinians already hated Israel. If there were any Palestinians who had any love for Israel, they don’t have it any longer. For years and ages to come there will be Palestinians who will hate Israel more than ever before. How many of these will act out their hate in terroristic ways? Israel will never forget, nor will the Palestinians. This is a lousy way for neighbors to get along with each other. The goal of Israel is to eliminate Hamas. Their goal is

not to kill the Palestinians. Unfortunately, thousands of Palestinians are being killed. Have you ever been to Pearl Harbor? Take the tour out to the USS Arizona where 1,171 of our soldiers are buried there in a watery grave. Around Pearl Harbor there are other sunken ships and the remains of buried Americans. Even today it will invoke serious feelings of ill will toward the Japanese and what they did to us on Dec. 7, 1941. We will never forget. Can you imagine how the Japanese feel about Americans? We obliterated Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing as many as 226,000 innocent civilians with our two atomic bombs on Aug. 6 and 9, 1945. Do you think they will ever forget? Never. Our country and Japan have made great strides in international relations. However, nobody has forgotten what took place on both sides of the Pacific. I often see shirt tags that say made in Vietnam. I have a hard time using anything made in Vietnam because of the thousands of American lives that were wasted in that country. It’s in the past but how do ever forget such a senseless war? How do they people of Afghanistan and Iraq feel about America? They hate us; regardless of any good that we might have done, they see us as a bunch of murderous thugs who don’t mind our own business. Russia. Do you think Jewish people have feelings of love for the Germans and what happened to them during the holocaust? We live in a world of an ‘eye for an eye’ and ‘a tooth for a tooth’, and it isn’t changing or going anywhere. You can talk about forgiveness and loving your enemies until you are blue in the face, but the world doesn’t operate this way. It’s wonderful if you have truly forgiven someone who has wronged or hurt you. When you allow that deep internal malice to dominate your mind it’s only eroding your well-being and life. Hate doesn’t hurt the other person unless you allow that hate to manifest itself in a violent way toward that person. Hamas has demonstrated their hatred for Jewish people. The Palestinians will hate Israel for ages to come. Israel cannot coexist with unrelenting evil whose mission is to torture and kill Jewish people. The result is an ongoing mess that will never go away. This is not working for our planet. A world that is able to take care of billions of people is going to be destroyed. Our only hope is to put away our bombs and live in peace and love. As long as there is evil in this world then unfortunately for us all, it’s not going to happen. KM Crisis Ministry receives Food Lion donation Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry has received $2,500 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help feed neighbors in their time of need. Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry will use this gift to purchase canned and dry goods for their food pantry to help those in our community who need food assistance Lisa Harrison, Executive Director of Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry, stated. ’We

are seeing record numbers of families needing assistance with food and financial assistance with utilities and rent. We have been struggling to keep our food pantry stocked. This grant will be a huge help to us to get our pantry filled again so that we can continue to help those in need.' Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry is an emergency assistance agency sponsored by the Kings Mountain Ministe-

rial Association, established in 1970. They receive funds from local churches, individuals, businesses, and charitable foundations to provide temporary assistance, food, and clothes to Cleveland County individuals facing a crisis. They try to prevent homelessness by giving families a temporary helping hand so that they can get back on their feet before they face eviction or living with no electricity and

food in their homes. The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is committed to supporting families facing food insecurity across its 10-state footprint. Established in 2001, the foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding local neighbors in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded over $17.8 million in grants. The Food Lion Feeds

Charitable Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Food Lion, based in Salisbury. N.C. Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to eliminating hunger. The charitable foundation has provided more than $17.8 million in grant funding, helping to nourish communities with fresh food for backpack programs, Kids Café’s, and other hunger-re-

lief programs, as well as funding for long-term programs to help shorten the lines at food banks. The charitable foundation partners with Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief agency, and local food agencies serving the 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states in which Food Lion operates. Cleveland County passed by a vote 342 to 271. W.A. Mauney was elected to N.C. Senate in 1906 and served one term. The Cleveland County Democratic party allowed him to run unopposed for the 1916 N.C. State House as a reward for using his influence to keep Kings Mountain in Cleveland County, and not Gaston.” At the time of this

vote, Kings Mountain had approximately 2,500 residents. Roughly 24.5 percent of the population voted to reunite both communities into one city. Things are similar today, but the city now has 11,409 residents. In the Nov. 7 municipal election, 1,415 people voted for mayor. That means that 12.4 percent of the population determined the outcome for 11,400 residents. The reality is that percentage-wise, fewer eligible

voters participated in this election than 90 years ago. Americans vote for our president every four years, and voters come out in droves. Many don’t know who the other candidates are; they wear the banner of blue or red to ensure their party gets elected. During the elections in between, we were lucky to have 12.4 percent of the voters Kings Mountain that participated.

LETTER From Page 4A from Senator Alexander requesting a meeting with our Executive Council scheduled for October 18. President Linda Carpenter, Vice-President Ashworth, Secretary Ann Wright, and Treasurer Martha Bridges, met with the Senator and Emily Sisk, Director of Grants with Cleveland Community College, and its service area in Cleveland County. After a brief review of the $10,000 funding, we would receive from the General Assembly, the Senator stated that he and the Speaker of the House, the Honorable Tim Moore, had obtained a further grant of $400,000.00. Needless to say, we were speechless! The Executive Committee met with the Building Committee to verify we could make the commitment and requirements necessary to receive and expend the funds. Our entire board then met on Sunday, October 22, to confirm support and willingness to accept the grant and its stipulations. The next day, VP Ashworth notified Senator Alexander that we would accept the grant. We were not allowed to announce or discuss any information with the public until the elected officials could prepare for a public presentation. Thursday, November 2, was set for the official announcement at the Archive building. We invited all our local members to attend the “Big Announcement.” NC Speaker Tim Moore, Senator Alexander, and Representative Kelly Hastings would be part of the presentation. President

Carpenter thanked everyone for attending and briefly recapped our past fundraising efforts before turning the meeting over to the elected officials. Senator Alexander thanked everyone for being there and remarked about how pleased he was to see so many members were able to attend. Speaking to the members, he stated that the work Broad River Genealogical Society does is really important. He said, “Our history is critical at this time in our country. What you do is so important in relaying the true history of Cleveland County.” He also thanked the county government and Mr. Doug Bridges, a Cleveland County Commissioner, for being able to attend. He said the State has been working on several projects in relation to the United States Semiquincentennial, which is the 250th anniversary of our country on July 4, 2026. The Legislature has been doing a lot of preparation for that Celebration in honor or North Carolina’s history. Senator Alexander gave this brief background about our funding. Several years ago, he was contacted by then President Greg Payseur about needing money for our Society to build; then later President Elizbeth Anthony also spoke to Senator Alexander about our need for money. Then, not too long ago, Dolores Ashworth contacted him and had the Society Board write a letter to Speaker Moore, Representative Hastings, and himself, describing our need. So, in the budget this year, they decided to do something about it. He acknowledged that

we already knew there was $10 thousand dollars coming in the budget for Broad River Genealogical Society. Then he turned the meeting over to Speaker Moore. Speaker Moore told about how he had come to personally relate to genealogy when Greg Payseur traced his heritage and found at least 4 of his ancestors fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Through those ancestors, he joined the Sons of the American Revolution. He said, “To be able to tell that story and that tie to the history of the county of our families who were here before we were ever a county, and been a part of building it, that’s an important story.” He went on to state that when we build family trees and research histories, we bring history to life, and “it’s important talking about why we have this unique culture from so many Scots Irish descendants and the work ethic that is here. How the people in this county have been able to deal with the hard times and the good times, and just the value system that has made this community of people what it is. And the research that you all have done and you all work on that is a key part of that.” He stated that he was sincere about this and, “the longer we’ve been a country and the longer we go and in particularly getting in this digital age, I think people lose sight of that, they lose sight of haistory and lose sight of family. What you all are doing is very important.” “So, when Ted came to us with a proposal, Kelly said, ‘Absolutely!’ and I was on board. I think the request was for $10 thousand. Well, we’ve had a pretty good budget year. Things are being done pretty well in Raleigh, not so good in Washington, but that’s a story for another day. And I’m proud to serve with these two men who are working hard. Well, you know, when you hear something from the government, you think, ‘Oh No! It’s going to be bad.’ Well, let me drop a little good news on you. From this year’s budget, you didn’t get $10 thousand, you got $495 thousand.” Gasps could be heard, applause erupted, and Speaker Moore, Senator Alexander and Representative Hastings presented a ceremonial check. The one who did return was a Samaritan who understood what had happened. He knew how it felt to show kindness to people who felt it was his duty to be kind to them. He alone, returned and fell on his face at Jesus feet, giving him thanks. But Jesus was concerned about the ungratefulness of the nine, knowing they had no real humility. Does saying thank you

This would be a great time to reflect on those who have touched our lives and we forgot to thank them for their kindness. Therefore, the next time you interact with a service person, tell them thank you and don’t act as if they are required to be nice to you, even if it is their job. God is concerned about our thankfulness. Treat others as you would have them treat you. If we make saying thank you a habit, it’s possible life would be much better. Be Blessed!

Golden LEAF Scholarship Program seeks Rural Internship partners The Golden LEAF Scholarship Program focuses on providing students with strong ties to rural communities with scholarships to attend a fouryear college or university in North Carolina. These students communicate an interest in returning to a rural North Carolina County after graduation from college. Without a job opportunity in a rural community, however, their students may not see rural as an option after college. To help build the rural workforce pipeline, Golden LEAF’s Rural Internship Initiative provides eligible Golden LEAF Scholars with paid, professional work experiences related to their career fields in rural North Carolina communities. While scholars can choose a site in any qualifying county, most of our scholars choose to return to their home community to work. In the summer of 2022, the Rural Internship Initiative had its first cohort of interns. Twenty students worked in 18 rural counties in various fields, including health care, education, law and public safety, and communication sciences. This summer, the second cohort more than doubled, with 49 interns participating in the Rural Internship Initiative working in 27 rural counties in fields such as health care, human services, government, engineering, and education. As the Rural Internship Initiative grows, Golden LEAF

Students will be responsible for reaching out to sites from this list. Internship sites agree to provide the intern with a meaningful project or role that aligns with the student’s college major and future career goals. Intern supervisors also commit to reporting on intern performance and provide the intern with mentoring on the role, professionalism, and rural community leadership. Internships take place over a period of at least eight weeks between May and August. Interns are paid $15 per hour for their work by the Golden LEAF Foundation through a thirdparty payroll service. They are asking for the help of rural businesses and organizations to provide meaningful professional experiences for students dedicated to living and working in rural areas. NC Medicaid Expansion launches December 1 Governor Roy Cooper and NC Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kody H. Kinsley announced on September 25 that DHHS will launch Medicaid Expansion on Dec. 1, giving more than 600,000 North Carolinians access to health care. “Finally expanding Medicaid in North Carolina is a monumental achievement that will extend health insurance to people who need it,” said Governor Cooper. “This means better health care, including those with mental health and substance use disorders, hope for rural hospitals struggling to stay open and billions of dollars for our economy. This action is long overdue, and we aren’t wasting a moment in beginning enrollment in North Carolina.” On Friday, Governor Cooper announced that he would allow the state budget passed by the General Assembly to become law and directed NCDHHS to immediately begin the process to start Medicaid expansion in North Carolina. Even while the budget stalled in the state legislature, NCDHHS worked with county and community partners to be ready to launch so people could get the care they desperately needed as soon as possible. On Friday, Governor Cooper and Sec. Kinsley spoke with federal leaders of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services about the urgent need to begin enrollment. “This work will yield results,” Governor Cooper said. On Dec. 1, the Department anticipates approximately 300,000 eligible people currently receiving Medicaid Family Planning benefits will automatically be enrolled in full health care coverage. “More than 600,000 people in North Carolina will get the health care coverage they have been waiting for,” said NCDHHS Secretary Kody

H. Kinsley. “Medicaid Expansion is the most significant investment in the health of North Carolina in decades and represents billions of dollars of investment each year that helps keep clinics, providers and hospital doors open.” Medicaid Expansion increases the eligible population to adults aged 19-64 with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level.

For example, expansion gives health care coverage to single individuals making under $20,000 a year. Likewise, a family of three earning under $34,000 combined will now be eligible. Beneficiaries will get care the same way as existing Medicaid beneficiaries and be eligible for the same comprehensive benefits and copays as other non-disabled adults in Medicaid.

Medicaid expansion will be transformative for access to health care in rural areas for better mental health or veterans, working adults, and their families while bringing billions in federal dollars to the state. North Carolina is one of 41 states that has expanded Medicaid since it was authorized in 2014.

KM Mountaineers fall to Reynolds, end 101st season with 10-2 record Kings Mountain High’s 101st year of football came to an end Friday night in Asheville as the Mountaineers fell to AC Reynolds 15-0 in the second round of the North Carolina High Schools Athletic Association 3A playoffs. The loss left the Mountaineers with a 10-2 record in their first season under head coach Strait Herron. Reynolds will head to Hickory High School this Friday in a battle to see who will go to the Western championship. The Kings Mountain de-

fense did a spectacular job, holding the hosts to just nine yards total offense. The Reynolds defense more than made up for that by picking off several passes and stopping some fourth down short yardage situations deep in their own territory. The Mountaineers missed their first scoring opportunity after the defense held Reynolds to threeand-out to open the game. Taking over at their own 46, the Mountaineers got a 10-yard run around end by Josiah Hill and a 10-yard catch by Xzorion Lenair to

set up shop at the ACR 34. But the first of many penalties followed by a six-yard loss on a screen pass forced them to punt. KM’s defense held ACR to another three and out and the offense moved from its own 25 to the Reynolds 27 but the hosts intercepted a pass at the seven yard line. The defense did its thing again, holding Reynolds to three and out and forcing a punt. Once again, the offense moved the ball well behind the running and Josiah Hill and a 29-yard catch by

Jayden Gash to get to the Reynolds 19 but penalties kicked in again and they ended up losing the ball on downs at the 16. After the defense held the hosts again, the offense appeared to be on the move working quickly to the visitors 47, but an interception stopped them. The hosts answered with what would be the winning touchdown, driving 43 yards in eight plays for a 6-0 lead. Another potential scoring drive to open the second half saw the Mountaineers

make it to the hosts’ 17-yard line only to lose the ball on downs. Two potential KM scoring drives early in the third period were halted by interceptions and the Mountaineer offense spent most of the game backed up after some very long ACR punts. Two other drives got into scoring range but, again, the Mountaineers lost the ball on downs. What may have been the play of the game was in the final three minutes when Roberson’s punter got off a 37-yarder that was downed

on the KM five with 2:22 remaining. Trying hard to make something happen, quarterback Kandan Zollo was under heavy pressure and was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone that resulted in a safety and 8-0 TCR lead. With just 54 seconds left, the Mountaineers were trying to make something happen and tried an onside kick from the five yard line but it was scooped up by Reynolds and taken into the end zone to account for the final margin.

Gaston receives $60M for Health Science Education, Simulation Center Gaston College recently received state approval for a $60 million Health Science Education and Simulation Center facility to provide training opportunities for new and existing healthcare personnel. This marks North Carolina’s largest community college budget allocation this year and the largest in Gaston’s history. “This will be the only regional facility open to industry that is capable of providing training opportunities to existing healthcare professionals as well as students through a full range of in-house simulation capabilities,” said Dr. John Hauser, president of Gaston College. “Not only will our students develop necessary skills in this facility, but current healthcare workers can come to retool skills, work to advance their position, acquire certifications, and more.” The establishment of

this facility could help address the estimated 700 job openings in healthcare in the region and contribute to the growing healthcare industry. “This historic investment in our future healthcare workforce is an acknowledgment of the critical needs of our region. We know that in order to get ahead of a potential healthcare crisis, we must begin today to develop that talent pool of smart healthcare talent to fill the jobs we have and will need,” said State Representative Jason Saine. “I am proud of the work and hard efforts by our delegation to secure this funding for the health sciences building. As the lead appropriator in the House of Representatives, I can tell you that having Senator Overcash’s support in the Senate was essential to getting this done.” The planned facility will expand the existing David Belk Cannon Health Insti-

tute on Gaston College’s Dallas campus. Intended services through the new facility are to include: • Advanced health care education and development • High-quality continuing education with healthcare-specific certifications • Certificates, diplomas, associate degree programs • Workforce development programs (industry certifications) • Apprenticeship opportunities in four health science programs • Cutting-edge healthcare technology-driven simulation center “The Gaston College Health Science Education and Simulation Center will fundamentally transform health care in our region, and its positive impact will be felt for generations,” said State Senator Brad Overcash. “I am immeasurably proud of the funding for this critical project.” Gaston College’s existing healthcare pro-

gram offerings include five nationally accredited programs, 13 health and human services programs, 13 university transfer partners, a health academy at East Gaston High School, and Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences through Gaston County Schools. Through the new Health Science Education and Simulation Center, the college’s programs will grow to include several new programs, new national accreditations, and new apprenticeship pathways. Gaston College will work with partners at CaroMont Regional Medical Center, Atrium Health, Gaston County Schools, Lincoln County Schools, Cleveland Community College, and Catawba Valley Community College to provide increased access to the facility

Tobacco use down in HS students, up in middle schoolers On October 2, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), released data from the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) on tobacco product use among U.S. youth. The findings, which were collected between March and June 2023, show that 10% of U.S. middle and high school students (2.8 million youth) reported current use of any tobacco product. Among U.S. high school students, current overall tobacco product use declined during 2022-2023 (16.5%

to 12.6%). This decline was primarily attributable to reduced e-cigarette use (14.1% to 10%), which translates to 580,000 fewer high school students who reported current use of e-cigarettes in 2023. Among high school students, declines in current use were also observed during 2022-2023 for cigars and overall combustible tobacco smoking, representing all-time lows. “It’s encouraging to see this substantial decline in e-cigarette use among high schoolers within the past year, which is See TOBACCO, Page 8B

a win for public health,” said Brian King, Ph.D., M.P.H., director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products. “But we can’t rest on our laurels. There’s more work to be done to build on this progress.” Although a decrease in e-cigarette use was observed among high school students, among middle school students, there was an increase in current overall tobacco product use (4.5% to 6.6%) and multiple tobacco product use (1.5% to 2.5%). However, among middle school students overall, no significant change was observed during 2022-2023 for current use of any individual tobacco product type, including e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes remained the most commonly used tobacco product among both high school and middle school students for the 10th year in a row. Among youth who reported current e-cigarette use, approximately one-quarter reported using e-cigarettes every day. Disposable e-cigarette products were the most common product type used by youth who reported e-cigarette use. However, the most popular brands included both disposable and cartridge-based products. Among current youth e-cigarette users, the most commonly reported brands were Elf Bar (56.7%), Esco Bars (21.6%), Vuse (20.7%), JUUL (16.5%) and Mr. Fog (13.6%). Among youth who reported current e-cigarette use, nearly all used flavored products (89.4%), with fruit, candy, mint and menthol being the most commonly used flavors. For the first time in NYTS, the 2023 questionnaire asked about use of flavors that included the word “ice” or “iced” in their name, along with other concept flavor names (i.e., names that imply flavor but do not explicitly indicate any particular flavor, such as “island bash”). Accounting for these products provides a more robust picture of flavored tobacco product use among youth, with the results suggesting that flavored tobacco product use among youth might be higher than previously thought. “The FDA remains concerned about youth tobacco product use, and we cannot and will not let our guard down on this issue,” King said. “The agency has an array of enforcement tools at our disposal, and we’re committed to using them as appropriate. We will not stand by as bad actors place profit over the health of our nation’s youth.” Youth use of tobacco products in any form – including e-cigarettes – is unsafe. Keeping tobacco products out of the hands of youth remains a top priority for the FDA. The FDA’s continued efforts, including the enforcement actions announced today, mark important progress toward achieving that goal.

Misleading Medicare Advantage Ads: What to Look Out For Dear Savvy Senior, I’m currently enrolled in original Medicare but have been thinking about switching to a Medicare Advantage plan during the open enrollment period. Many of the Medicare Advantage ads I’ve seen offer lots of extra benefits beyond what traditional Medicare offers and no monthly premiums. What are your thoughts? Considering a Switch

Dear Considering, Be very leery of the Medicare Advantage ads on TV, radio, social media and that come in the mail. While many of these ads may tout free vision, hearing, dental and other benefits with zero monthly premiums, they aren’t always what they claim to be. Advantage Basics Medicare Advantage or MA plans (also known as Medicare Part C) are government approved health plans sold by private insurance companies that you can choose in place of original Medicare. The vast majority of Advantage plans are managed-care policies such as HMOs or PPOs that require you to get your care within a network of doctors in a geographic area. You can sign up for one of them during

open-enrollment season from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.

MA plans have exploded in popularity in recent years as insurers have flooded the airways with advertisements, often by celebrity pitchmen, that promote low-cost options with lots of extra benefits. But be aware that the Federal government has deemed many claims in MA ads fraudulent and misleading. Some ads imply that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services endorses or prefers a specific plan. Others promise more cost savings than you really get. And if you choose the wrong plan, your doctor may not be a member of that plan’s network, or you may end up paying out-of-pocket for medically necessary care. This past September, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services began cracking down on these ads, but you still need to practice self-defense. Here are some tips to help you make a good decision. Cover your needs: When evaluating MA plans, make sure the one’s you’re considering cover the doctors you like

and the health care facilities you normally go to. Also, make sure all of the prescription medications you take are on the drug plan’s formulary.

To help you compare plans, a good first step is to call the office managers of the doctors you use and find out which Advantage plans they accept, and which ones they recommend. Then go to the Medicare Plan Finder tool at Medicare.gov/plan-compare to compare plans in your area. Understand the details: Some MA plans promote no monthly premiums, but the reality is that you are still responsible for your original Medicare costs including your Part B premium and deductibles and copays for covered services. Moreover, you may have to pay more out-of-pocket if you see a doctor outside the network. Also, if the plan is an HMO, it generally doesn’t cover non-emergency care out of network, so an individual may be responsible for full costs. A PPO on the other hand, allows people to go out of network, but they generally have to pay more to do so. Do some digging: Many MA plans tout free vision, hearing and dental

benefits that are not covered by traditional Medicare, but these benefits are often limited. For example, a plan that offers free dental coverage may cover only cleanings and x-rays. Extensive procedures such as root canals or caps may not be covered, or the plan may limit the dollar amount it pays. Find out the coverage details so you’re not surprised later. Get help: Reach out to your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) at ShipHelp.org or call 877-839-2775. These are nonprofit programs that provide unbiased oneon-one Medicare counseling and assistance. You can also report any misleading MA claims to the Senior Medicare Patrol Resource Center at SMPResource. org or by calling 800-447-8477. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O.
