“Keyboards at Christmas” at First Baptist this Sunday One of the area’s most unusual musical events will once again be presented on the stage of First Baptist Church at 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM, this Sunday, December 17th. This year’s Keyboards at Christmas will be the tenth presentation of what has become a highly anticipated bi-annual celebration of the season. Surrounded by the festive decor of the worship center, this instrumental presentation emits from a stage packed with five grand pianos, an electric keyboard, organ and, for some songs, a full array of handbells. A concert style presentation utilizing six pianists at the same time is most unusual for any entertainment venue. One out of town visitor at the last Keyboards event was overheard saying See KEYBOARDS, Page 5A

Over the weekend, Molly Grantham held a book signing meet and greet at Trackside Trader at 210 S. Railroad Avenue in Kings Mountain. Molly was there to promote her latest book titled “Practice Makes...Progress.” According to her website, “Molly Grantham’s third book is the continuing chronical of how you can love your kids and a career, as told by a woman willing to bare her soul. Her authenticity will make you think about your own path, choices, and ability to be human in our unpredictable and beautiful world.” The event was attended by her fans who came to meet her and get their copies of the book signed. Despite the light rain outside, Molly greeted her guests warmly and took the time to speak to each one of them. Many of the attendees were people she had met before, while some were meeting her for the first time. Many expressed their admiration for her story coverage, especially her thoughtful and respectful handling of tragic events.
Molly’s third book makes you think about your own path, choices, and ability to be human in our unpredictable and beautiful world. Others came to thank her for her work with Molly’s kids. Molly spent extra time with two of the kids who visited her during the event, taking photos with them and giving them big hugs. One individual even traveled from York, SC to buy a set of her books as a baby shower gift for an expectant mother. The event took place at the invitation of Sharon and Bobby Horne, who own Trackside Trader. Sharon de-
scribed Molly as a wonderful person who is genuine and down to earth. And that she certainly was, and more. Molly Grantham is an Emmy award-winning anchor and investigative reporter for WBTV Charlotte. She has been named TV News Reporter of the Year for both Carolinas, one of Charlotte’s Top “40 under 40,” and one of Mecklenburg County’s “50 Most Influential Women.”

TODAY’S QUOTE:
OPINION
For it is in giving that we receive. –Francis Of Assi
Pieces of Kings Mountain History Christmas in Kings Mountain was always exciting for children and adults LORETTA in the 1940s COZART through the 1960s. In late November, the Merchants Association informed the public of new lines coming into shops for the holidays, and the shop owners decorated their store windows with all the new merchandise. During the year, stores and banks closed early on Wednesdays. But during the Christmas Holidays, the Merchants Association would forgo closing early on Wednesdays and often kept stores open late on Fridays and Saturdays, too. To help shoppers save the money to purchase those gifts, banks and savings and loans encouraged customers to open a Christmas Club account. That way, people didn’t have to go into debt for Christmas gifts. A little money saved weekly made the holidays merry and bright come December. As a matter of course, the
Kings Mountain Christmas parade kicked off the holiday shopping season. Following the parade, the lights were lit, and downtown stores often remained open late, taking the opportunity to attract shoppers who were already there. Lights in the town twinkled, window displays shone bright, and the crisp fall air made it feel even more like Christmas. On King Street, decorations were added to telephone poles, and unique lights spanned the entire street at the entrances to the town. I remember driving under the prancing reindeer on East King Street until I was in my teens. While I do not have this memory, friends shared they remember lights spanning Battleground Avenue and Mountain Street during the holidays. That must have been a beautiful sight, adding to the holiday excitement. Shopping under twinkling lights is always magical. Children flocked to Bridges Hardware’s store window to see all the new toys in its display windows: bicycles, autos, tractors, firetrucks, and various sizes
of wagons and tricycles. They also carried “Block City” block sets and life-like big dolls. They also held contests for prizes during the holiday, giving a “Baby Coos” doll two consecutive weeks before Christmas. If you have ever seen “A Christmas Story,” Bridges Hardware was to Kings Mountain what Higbee’s Department Store was to Hohman, Indiana in the movie. And Bridges Hardware wasn’t the only store to decorate their windows. All stores did. I remember driving through town and the lights shining brightly everywhere, especially at Belk’s and Plonk’s department stores. To encourage families to shop downtown, the Joy Theater often ran free movies, with free popcorn, for children 12 and under so their parents could shop. What was a genius decision that was by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Christmas was a magical time for many reasons in Kings Mountain, not just because of new merchandise in store windows or customers bustling from place to place to get those perfect
gifts. No, it was magical to see so many merchants in downtown Kings Mountain working together to benefit the business community and their customers. It was a shining example of how downtowns are supposed to work, how ours worked until we moved the grocery stores outside the central business district, and other stores followed them to the suburbs. We are now witnessing the business environment downtown improve, with new stores and restaurants being added. Rumors of
a new boutique hotel are being discussed, perhaps even a new city parking deck. We wait with anticipation as newly announced restaurants open their doors. It is such an exciting time now, after years of drought in our downtown district. To keep those businesses here, however, we must do our part to support and help them thrive. We must shop in the stores and eat in the restaurants. We need to encourage friends to shop there, too, and get to know the owners. When you support them, you will, in
turn, see them support the community with more fun events downtown. What a wonderful thing to witness as Kings Mountain’s downtown becomes a thriving business hub again. In the end, Shopping Local helps everyone in our community thrive. During this holiday season, we have many things for which to be thankful. But the hope of a thriving downtown filled with friends who support the local business owners is a gift we all need.

In 1968, Kings Mountain High School’s Homecoming Parade ran south down Battleground Avenue in front of all the shops. This photo features Homecoming Queen Cathy Bridges and her court: Sandi Ledbetter, Gail Bennett, and Cathy Hardin. The Model A behind the Homecoming float included a skit featuring Donna Myers Williams and Jim Mauney acting as Bonnie and Clyde. They got out of the car and ran into the First National Bank (First Union National Bank) on the corner and robbed it with their machine guns…. all in jest, of course. Cleveland County and CCS partner to increase teacher supplements Cleveland County Commissioners and the Cleveland County Board of Education continue to work together by placing teacher supplements as a high funding priority. The collaborative work done by both organizations has resulted in significant increases in the local Cleveland County teacher’s supplement over the last two years. “Supporting teachers is a significant investment in our collective future. Increases to teacher supplements, coupled with the recent increases approved in the State budget, will assist in our efforts to recruit and retain high-quality educators,” said County Commissioner Chairman Kevin Gordon. “We appreciate the teaching profession and the true dedication our teachers have to the future of our children and the future of our county.” In October 2023, the state’s budget became law,
and teachers, as well as other school employees, will see a salary increase of approximately 7% over the biennium. As a part of this year’s local budget, the Commissioners and Board of Education jointly committed to raising the local teacher’s supplement. Teacher supplements are a locally funded percentage of the state base added to a certified teacher’s salary. Teacher supplements are critical because they serve as a significant and meaningful local impact on teacher pay and differentiate what county districts can offer to their teachers. Just last year, the Commissioners and Board of Education agreed to increase the local supplement by 2%, which raised the supplement rate to 7.75%. This year’s increase will bring the local Cleveland County teacher’s supplement to 9.25%. The cost of the supple-
ments is approximately $800,000 per 1% increase. Local supplement increases are funded from local sources. “The School Board is thankful to the Board of Commissioners for their continued support and partnership,” said Robert Queen, Chairman of the Cleveland County Board of Education. “Cleveland County has been blessed with educators that make a difference in the lives of their students and in our community.” Teacher supplements will be paid based on salaries adjusted to include the increase approved during the state budget. They are distributed annually in November. It is the Commissioner’s and School Board’s intention to continue to grow the supplement with a goal to achieve a supplement percentage of 10%, by 2025.
CHRISTMAS
The place was crammed with people just like us who needed a place to eat on Christmas day. We ate some omelets and pancakes, making the most of it and giving thanks that we had made it home safely and found a place to eat. I suspect we will remember the day forever. We were safe, had some food to eat, and had a warm home to hang out and watch television the rest of the day. Often, it’s the simple things of life that we remember because it’s the simple things that get us through. Often, we overwhelm ourselves with aiming for grandeur. We have to remember what
grandeur is really all about. The first Christmas grandeur was a baby lying in a cow’s trough. A peasant couple was thankful to just find a covering for their heads to bring their new baby into the world. Every year they are remembered and celebrated. Their Christmas was as simple as it gets but it was so significant and life-changing for all who love their story. As you celebrate this special season, keep in mind that some of the simplest things you do will likely be the most significant part of your Christmas story.
From Page 4A have a large family gathering or it may just be you and two or three more. Make the most of however you spend your Christmas. Last year my son and I were traveling three hours to celebrate with family, but the weather was so bad we had to turn around and go back home. We hadn’t prepared food because we were planning on connecting with our family at our gathering destination. When we got back home, we were thankful that our local restaurant was open.

KEYBOARDS From Page 1A “we don’t have anything like this in Charlotte”. This leads the question, how did such an elaborate Christmas program originate in Kings Mountain? An answer is offered by Dr. Jonathan Bundon, Worship Pastor of First Baptist Church and the developer of the Kings Mountain Keyboards at Christmas series: “When I came to Kings Mountain 17 years ago, I was astounded at the amount of talent as well as humility that was in this church.” Bundon began building on that talent to form the current musical offerings of a full adult choir, multiple bands and praise teams as well as musical training for all ages. Bundon’s one-word mantra, “excellence,” led him to pull together some of the area’s leading pianists to develop this novel Christmas concert of multiple keyboards.

Bundon says that musical selections are experimented with in the warmth of summer, and each pianist, giving time and effort without financial compensation, practices for months both individually and together. “Their contribution cannot be overstated,” he says. The 6:00 PM presentation of Keyboards at Christmas will also be live-streamed on the church’s website at www. fbckm.com and on YouTube.

The six pianists for this unusual program include Bundon, Michael Sisk, Traci Aderholdt, Heather Bundon, Bethany Keller and Sherry Thomas. Staging for this event is quite a task in itself. In addition to the church’s grand piano in the worship center, four other grand pianos must be secured from various locations, hauled to the church, loaded to the stage and arranged. Then each must be professionally tuned. Of course, after the presentation, those four must be removed and returned to their respective locations. Since such a presentation is not a normal part of a church’s programming, it’s fair to ask why the church would go to such expense and effort? The church’s pastor, Dr. Chip Sloan, answers, “We love sharing this festive event with the entire community. Christmas joyfully commem-

Christmas Peace… What thoughts of Peace.” (Isaiah go through your 9:6, KJV). mind when you On the night think of the word of Jesus’ birth in peace? For me, the Bethlehem, the word peace is a heavenly host said comforting word. to the shepherds, When I think of “Glory to God in peace, I think the highest, and on of calmness… earth peace, good something like a will toward men.” sweet innocent Pastor Ron Caulder (Luke 2:14). What kind of baby wrapped in Eastside Baptist peace would this a warm blanket be? It would be or perhaps watching a beautiful sunset on the the peace of God that passes beach. Peace is a word we will all human understanding hear many times during this which would now be available for the human heart when the Christmas season. The prophet Isaiah wrote Son of God is born into one’s long ago: “For unto us a life. There are four kinds of Child is born. Unto us a Son is given; and the government will peace described in the Bible. First, in Christ we discover be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonder- an UPWARD peace. Upward ful, Counselor, Mighty God, peace is the basis of all true Everlasting Father, the Prince peace. Upward peace is the
peace one receives when Jesus Christ is accepted as Lord and Savior. In Romans 5:1 we read: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.” This is the peace we need the most. This peace comes through a personal relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. God, in His love, reaches out to us in our sins and calls us to this upward peace. He offers peace from the war that our sins have waged against Him. He loved us so much that He sent His Son into this sin-cursed world to redeem us. Christmas reminds us that God sent His Son into this world to open the door of peace into our hearts, minds, and souls. When a person accepts Christ, the conflict with God is over. As we turn our sins and lives
over to Jesus, He forgives us of our sins and prepares a place in heaven for us so that some day we may live with Him forever. The second peace we discover in Christ is an INWARD peace. Once we have peace with God, we are ready for real peace within. This peace comes by trusting our lives to the care of the Lord. In John 14:1 Jesus told His disciples “Do not let your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in Me.” This doesn’t mean that we will not have troubles, it simply means that we have a Savior who walks with us through our troubles. We don’t have to bear our troubles alone. Not only do we have Jesus to help us, but also the presence of God and the Holy Spirit. Our Lord came on that first Christmas to grant us this UP-
Wednesday, December 13, 2023 WARD peace. In Christ we also discover an OUTWARD peace. This is peace with people around us. If we are Christians, we are called to be peacemakers. In Hebrews we read: “Make every effort to live in peace with all men…(Hebrews 12:14a). The writer of Hebrews goes on to say that we should make every effort to live in peace and avoid allowing the roots of bitterness to grow between us and others. It is our duty to do our part to create peace with others, even though everyone will not accept us or desire peace with us. We are taught in Romans 12:18 “If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Lastly, in Christ we discover an ONWARD peace. One day the Prince of Peace is coming back. One day the Lord of Glory who came as a little baby, placed in a manger, held in Mary’s arms, will return as the reigning Lord on a
white stallion. Jesus is coming to set up a kingdom of peace on this earth. The lion will lie down with the lamb. Swords will be beaten into plowshares. When Jesus ascended after His resurrection, the angel promised He would come again in like manner—riding upon the clouds. The return of Jesus will bring peace on this earth. We just need to patient as we wait upon the return of the Lord. I invite you this Christmas to experience the peace you can have by knowing Christ and the future peace we will experience eternally in the presence of the Lord. If you don’t have God’s peace today, I invite you to receive Jesus into your life as your Savior and Lord. It will be the greatest Christmas you have ever had! If you know Christ’s peace, then celebrate His presence in your life. Come, kneel, and worship our blessed Savior and Lord!

as well as our teammates and our community.” These restrictions and updated masking policies became effective on December 7, at Atrium Health locations across the greater Charlotte area. Atrium Health also urges members of the community to continue taking measures that are known to limit the spread of respiratory viruses. Health officials strongly encourage people to stay home when they are sick, maintain good respiratory etiquette, such as hand washing and covering the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, and, most importantly, stay up to date on all vaccines – including the updated COVID-19 vaccine and the new RSV vaccine – to best protect against illness heading into the holiday season. As always, patients are asked to only visit the emergency department if they are experiencing a serious or life-threatening illness or injury. Those who need medical attention for more routine symptoms such as cough, fever, fatigue, and other flulike symptoms should contact their primary care provider. Other options include urgent care centers and virtual visits. Find care here. It is important to note that some hospitals and health systems may have additional restrictions on visitors in certain areas and restrictions are subject to change without notice. Please read and follow the signage posted on-site and follow any directions provided by staff members at the facility.

of spreading viruses, visitors aged 12 and younger are not permitted to visit patients in our hospitals, behavioral health, and inpatient rehabilitation locations. Under certain circumstances, such as visiting a dying family member, the patient’s care team may arrange for visitors under 12. Throughout the year, and especially right now, visitors who do not feel well or who have a confirmed case of flu, RSV, COVID-19, or any other respiratory virus should not visit. Masks are required when entering a patient’s room in these settings, which include acute care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals and units, emergency departments (including freestanding ED locations), skilled nursing facilities, behavioral health, inpatient hospice, infusion centers, and certain cancer care areas, including outpatient bone marrow transplant clinics. “It is essential we protect our most vulnerable patients during respiratory virus season,” said Dr. Katie Passaretti, vice president and enterprise chief epidemiologist for Atrium Health. “We have seen in the past how these viruses, such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV, can cause severe disease and even death. We recognize that visitor restrictions may be inconvenient for some, but they are temporary changes to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect our patients,
There are many ways your actions can help protect you, your household, and your community from severe illnesses from COVID-19, flu, RSV, and other respiratory diseases. Keep current on local virus data statistics to keep your family healthy. Clevland County has seen an increase in the flu and RSV, while COVID numbers remain stable. According to the CDC, last week, twelve people were admitted with COVID-19 in the county. Nationwide, that number averages less than 10, putting Cleveland County in the Moderate Level of risk. Across North Carolina, the COVID data places the current risk at a Moderate level. However, in South Carolina, the
COVID levels are considered Very High. Knowing this, you can take appropriate actions when you travel to help keep your family healthy. The United States is experiencing elevated RSV activity, particularly among young children. After a period of limited change, COVID-19 activity is increasing again, especially in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. Influenza activity continues to grow in most of the nation. Hospital bed occupancy for all patients, including within intensive care units, remains stable nationally; however, pediatric inpatient bed occupancy has increased. Vaccines are available and can help protect people from the most severe

membering those who came before and sacrificed for us. These individuals served when asked. Some returned intact, but some bore the invisible scars of war. Others returned with wounds that reminded them each day of that sacrifice. Yet others returned home to the tears of family and friends as they were laid to rest. Remembering, Honoring, and Teaching are the tasks we have at hand. And Saturday is the day on which to do it. You are invited to join in honoring Kings Mountain
veterans on December 16. The ceremony lasts about an hour and honors and remembers the veterans of Kings Mountain at Christmastime. If you want to help set up, please arrive at Mountain Rest Cemetery by 11 a.m. and meet near the veterans’ section near the stage. Wreaths need to be distributed in bulk to various sections throughout the cemetery, so bring your pickup truck and lend a hand. Feel free to bring a few friends, too. Those who wish to place wreaths are asked to arrive shortly before noon.
As Kings Mountain citizens gather to thank veterans residing at Mountain Rest Cemetery, let us not forget the sacrifices these veterans made for us and our country. Let us remember that these individuals were husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, wives, sisters, daughters, mothers, and friends. Most called Kings Mountain home at some point in their lives, and now they rest among us for eternity. Let us take time to remember and honor each of them this Saturday at noon.
help enhance the state’s existing passenger rail services between Charlotte and Raleigh and expand passenger rail into other areas of North Carolina and other states. During his tenure as Mayor, Scott Neisler worked tirelessly, advocating for passenger rail lines near Kings Mountain, whether along the I-85 corridor, between Atlanta and Charlotte, or using the Norfolk Southern lines through Kings Mountain. In recent years, Freight railroads have fought against increasing passenger rail traffic along its lines. On Monday, the Herald caught up with Mayor Neisler on his way to Raleigh to witness Gov. Cooper’s announcement with United States Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to highlight the historic $1.09 billion S-Line passenger rail grant. “Right now, it is about Charlotte. The city needs to get people from the airport to downtown. Remember at Thanksgiving, when people had to leave their cars and walk to the airport due to traffic congestion? Then there are the Panther football day trains that run from Raleigh on gamedays. But fans must get off the train and walk a mile to the stadium. These improvements will greatly change how people travel in Charlotte and give Kings Mountain the opportunity to have the same great options.” Nonetheless, this funding and the study of the remaining seven corridors give hope that Kings Mountain will again offer passenger rail service to and from nearby
metropolitan markets. President Biden and US Department of Transportation officials announced that North Carolina will receive a $1.09 billion discretionary federal grant to design and build the first segment of the S-Line, a high-performance passenger rail line to connect North Carolina and Virginia better, and rural and urban communities in North Carolina. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) grant awarded this week to the NC Department of Transportation will be used to complete the initial phase of the Raleigh to Richmond Innovating Rail Program, which includes construction on the S-Line rail corridor from Raleigh to Wake Forest. The $1.09 billion grant marks the largest grant the NCDOT has received to date. “What has made this project so successful is the partnership we have with the cities and towns along the S-Line,” said Julie White, NCDOT’s deputy secretary for Multimodal Transportation. “Bringing passenger rail back to the downtowns will further community efforts to grow vibrant main streets with mixed-use developments.” Before this week’s grant announcement, S-Line corridor-related projects had received about $110 million in discretionary federal funds to advance the project. Those funds paid for parts of the project, including surveying, preliminary engineering, and station development referred to as mobility hubs. The
mobility hubs bring together the rail station with last-mile transportation solutions like transit and ridesharing services that make other modes of travel accessible so customers can get to their final destinations quickly and easily. The S-Line rail corridor is a freight line owned by CSX that connects Richmond and Raleigh on the federally designated Southeast Corridor. Virginia has already acquired the line in their state from CSX, and North Carolina officials are working to finish a deal to purchase the corridor in North Carolina. Once the Raleigh to Richmond program is complete, the passenger rail service will save over an hour of travel time between the two cities. The service will also allow much more frequent and reliable train service, making the trip to Washington D.C. competitive with driving times. “Offering more passenger rail services along the S-Line will bring even greater benefits to North Carolina for decades to come,” said Jason Orthner, director of NCDOT’s Rail Division. “Adding to our existing passenger rail service will save people more time and money, make travel more efficient and comfortable, and will help reduce congestion on our highways.” Officials will use the $1.09 billion grant for final engineering design, rightof-way acquisition, and construction costs for the section of the S-Line from Raleigh to Wake Forest. The money will also be used on new, upgraded track and replacing at-grade crossings with highway/rail overpasses. Officials plan to upgrade the existing freight rail line to accommodate passenger rail service while maintaining the current freight rail service. Construction in Wake County will include highway and rail bridges, including two safety projects in Cary on the Southeast Corridor.

From Page 1A Veterans will be read aloud. Some of these veterans have families who visit often. But some have no family at all, so no one visits them. But on this day, we will remember them by saying their names acknowledging their sacrifice of service and visiting with them for just a minute. It is a small thing that means a lot. The day is also important because it is when we teach children the importance of re-

34 new jobs for Cleveland County
Three RIA grants announced for Cleveland and Gaston counties Quantum Power, a North Carolina-based renewal energy company, will create 34 jobs in Cleveland County and invest $19 million to establish a new facility in Lawndale in Cleveland County. The company’s new operations will be located in the Broad River Assets building, formerly Cleveland Mills. Quantum Power generates clean, renewable energy in the form of electricity generated by a fuel stock that otherwise would have been discarded. Their clean-combus-
tion process converts industrial byproducts into sustainable power. This new location will support Quantum Powers’ expansion in North Carolina. “After an extensive search throughout the southeast, we selected Lawndale, North Carolina for our newest facility based on key supply chain factors and a supportive community,” said Mark Romano, President. “We look forward to an ongoing partnership with the State of North Carolina as we expand our company.” “We are excited that
Quantum Power has chosen Lawndale for their new operations in Cleveland County,” said Ray Padgett, Mayor of Lawndale. “These jobs will have a positive impact on our community and be a catalyst for growth, and for that, we are extremely grateful," Padgett added. “On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, we are extremely grateful to Quantum Power for choosing Cleveland County and the Broad River Assets Solutions property to be the future home of your
new operations. We commit to being your company’s supportive and enduring partner in the future and look forward to watching your business prosper in our community,” added Kevin Gordon, Chairman of the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners The company’s 34 new jobs will include managerial, operational, IT, maintenance, and office staff. The average annual salary for all new positions is $51,636, creating a payroll impact of more than $1.8 million annually. Cleve-

$324,929. • Gaston County: A $230,000 grant will support the 32,000-square-foot expansion of a building in Bessemer City. The building is occupied by Connor Brothers Machine, Inc., a precision machine and fabrication company that produces custom parts for manufacturing equipment. The company expects to add 31 new jobs with an investment of $46,579,538 in this project. The Building Reuse Program provides grants to local governments to renovate vacant buildings, renovate and/or expand buildings occupied by existing North Carolina companies, and renovate, expand, or construct healthcare facilities that will lead to the creation of new jobs in Tier 1 and Tier 2 counties, as well as rural census tracts of Tier 3 counties.
BBB Offers five ways to avoid delivery scams and package theft Some consumers have recently been getting text messages stating a major delivery carrier needs them to "update delivery preferences" on a package by clicking on a link. The problem? The text is a scam, and the link results in theft of personal information. Most consumers love the convenience of making purchases online and having them shipped straight to their doorstep. But with millions of packages delivered each year, con artists and thieves have developed many ways to steal from shoppers. Fortunately, there are also many ways to protect yourself from their shady tactics. Delivery scams and theft are particularly prevalent during the holidays, when more packages are being shipped, but they can happen year-round. Scammers are hoping shoppers are busy or distracted and will act without thinking. The first scam to look out for are phishing texts or emails that pose as official notices from delivery companies. These either contain a “tracking link” or a message that the shipper is having difficulty delivering a package to you, or most recently, a link to update delivery preferences. Clicking the link either takes you to a form that asks for personally identifying information, or to a site that downloads malware onto your computer. Another delivery scam involves fake “missed delivery” tags. Scammers place a note on your door that claims they are having challenges delivering a package to you. They ask you to call a phone number to reschedule your delivery, but it’s really a ruse to get your personal information. Another issue shoppers face is package theft. Many consumers have had their packages stolen before they arrive home from work. Thieves snatch packages from doorsteps or lobbies of apartment or condo complexes. Criminals even follow delivery and postal
trucks. When the truck leaves, the crooks move in and grab the parcels. How to Avoid Delivery Scams: 1. Take precautions to ensure a safe delivery. If you are having a valuable or fragile item delivered to your home, purchase shipping insurance. In addition, always get tracking numbers for your purchases and check the shipping progress periodically. 2. Watch out for texts, calls, or emails about a missed delivery. Legitimate delivery services usually leave a “missed delivery” notice on your door. If you receive a missed delivery notice, examine the form carefully to make sure it is authentic, and only then follow their instructions. Keep track of what you’ve ordered so you have a better idea of what is coming and when. Don't click on any links; go to the delivery carrier's website directly or log in and use the retailer's tracking tools. 3. Request a Signature. Chances are this feature may come with a price tag, but it may be worth the extra fee. Requesting a signature means that a delivery service won’t be able to drop a package on your doorstep unless someone is around to sign for it. 4. Don’t leave packages sitting on your doorstep. Packages left sitting outside are particularly vulnerable to theft. To ensure safe delivery, have your package delivered to your workplace, or to a trusted friend or neighbor who will be home to accept delivery. Some delivery companies now have lockers where your packages can securely wait for you to pick them up using a one-time code to open the locker. 5. Open your delivery upon receipt to check for damage or signs of tampering. Contact the seller immediately if you believe something is wrong with the shipment or if it’s not what you ordered. Also, be sure to review the seller’s return policy for damaged or unwanted items

THE SAVIOUR IS BORN
We Celebrate Christmas
Luke 1 The Birth of Jesus Foretold 26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34”How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[c] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God.” 38”I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her. Mary Visits Elizabeth 39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!” Mary’s Song 46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers.” Luke 2 The Birth of Jesus 1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to his own town to register. 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. The Shepherds and the Angels 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14”Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Governor Roy Cooper recently honored Elijah James, a senior at Pinnacle Classical Academy, as the winner of the Outstanding Teen Award from NCWorks Awards of Distinction, and the College Board recognized fellow seniors John Paul Cannon and Daissy Soto in the College Board National Recognition Programs. James was among five North Carolinians who received awards for outstanding accomplishments and contributions related to workforce development. "Through the NCWorks NextGen youth program of Foothills Workforce Development Board, James has found support and opportunities to gain skills while overcoming obstacles," the North Carolina Department of Commerce stated in announcing the award. "James has participated in activities such as a Youth Summit, an entrepreneurial workshop, the Chess Club, and multiple work-based learning programs, with employers such as the Cleveland County Library and Hos-

A model NextGen program participant, he has applied himself wholeheartedly in his work-based learning and learned numerous critical skills, such as time management, organization, communication, customer service, problem-solving, and teamwork." The College Board National Recognition Programs celebrate students’ hard work in high school and showcase their strong academic performance on College Board assessments such as the PSAT and AP exams. John Paul Cannon received the National Rural and Small Town Award,
and Daissy Soto received the National Hispanic Recognition Award. “It’s becoming increasingly hard for students to be ‘seen’ during the college recruitment process,” said Tarlin Ray, senior vice president of BigFuture at College Board. “We’re exceptionally proud of the National Recognition Programs for celebrating students who are at times overlooked but have shown their outstanding academic abilities.” "We are incredibly proud of the hard work of Elijah, John, and Daissy," said Dr. Shelly Shope, the school's headmaster. Beware of scams this holiday season “This time of year, online shopping surges as folks scramble to buy holiday gifts and find the best deals online. Unfortunately, scammers know this all too well and will try to take advantage of unaware shoppers,” NC Attorney General Josh Stein warns. People often report credit card fraud, phishing, and shipping scams during the holiday season. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported that these scams cost consumers more than $500 million in 2022! When doing your holiday shopping online this year, be sure to follow these steps to avoid letting criminals rob you of your hard-earned money and holiday spirit: • Always verify who you’re buying from. Ensure that a website you plan to shop with has https:// with a lock icon in the URL to ensure you are on a secure and legitimate site. If you’re unsure if an online vendor is legitimate, call the Better Business Bureau or our office’s Consumer Protection Section at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM to see if the company has any complaints against it. You should also do an online search for negative reviews. • Avoid offers that seem too good to be true. If you find a low-priced product online, especially on a site you aren’t familiar with, cross-check the price with other more well-established vendors. If the price you found is significantly lower, it’s likely a scam. • Look for red flags on websites. Spelling errors, pop-up ads, unusual payment methods,
or requests for personal information are good indicators that an online vendor is unsafe to shop from. If you’re redirected to another website or domain, make sure to check the URL to ensure it’s secure. • Stay on top of your shipping information. Scammers know that people will be tracking their online deliveries and will try to trick them with fake text messages or emails about a package. When you order online, make sure you have tracking numbers directly from the vendor or mail carrier so you can track your package directly with them. Avoid clicking any links you randomly receive via text message or email about your package. These can be phishing links designed to steal your personal information. • Pay with a credit card whenever possible. Scammers will often ask you to use other payment types like wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency because it is more difficult to dispute a transaction and get your money back. • Report suspicious activity to authorities. Never hesitate to contact law enforcement if you suspect you’ve been scammed. Reporting these scams helps law enforcement crackdown on these crimes and can help prevent others from falling victim. If you think you or somebody you know has been scammed, contact our office’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or file a complaint online at https:// ncdoj.gov/file-a-complaint/.

Janet Yellen visits Gaston College Gaston College was honored to welcome Janet L. Yellen, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, to its Dallas campus on Thursday, November 30. Secretary Yellen came to North Carolina to deliver remarks on how President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, and the administration’s Investing in America agenda, is spreading economic op-
portunity and strengthening America’s energy security. During her visit, she toured our Welding shop and spoke with Austin Price, Chair of the Welding Technology program, and several of our welding students. She also visited the Electrical Systems Technology classroom where she spoke with Bill Leagon, Chair of the Electrical
Systems Technology and AC, Heating and Refrigeration Technology programs, about our renewable energy and photovoltaic certificate programs in electrical systems technology. Following her brief tour, she participated in a roundtable discussion with six Gaston College students and alumni, as well as Dr. John Hauser, President,
Dr. Lisa Albright-Jurs, Dean of Career and Technical Education, and Greg Smith, Vice-President for Economic and Workforce Development. Prior to coming to Gaston College, Secretary Yellen and N.C. Governor Roy Cooper toured the Livent facility in Bessemer City.
NCDOT ‘Tree of Life’ remembers N.C. vehicle crash victims The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program and North Carolina Mothers Against Drunk Driving hosted a candlelight vigil Friday night, December 1, to honor people killed last year in North Carolina traffic crashes and remind everyone to be safe on the roads. “This evening’s event is a poignant reminder that traffic victims are people, not statistics,” said GHSP Director Mark Ezzell. “Every traffic death tears families and communities apart forever, and we all must redouble our efforts to create a state where these preventable deaths are eliminated.” Dozens gathered on the State Capitol Grounds for the 26th annual tree lighting of the towering Fraser fir, which was do-

The fir was decorated with 1,798 ornament bulbs to represent each life lost on North Carolina roads in 2022. The candlelight ceremony featured several speakers, including N.C. Department of Public Safety Secretary Eddie Buffaloe Jr., N.C. Department of Transportation
Chief Operating Officer Chris Peoples, Ezzell, and N.C. MADD Director Jennifer Lichtneger. Crash victims Sherry McCall and Chad Goulet spoke about their experience after being involved in vehicle crashes in 2022. An impaired driver struck McCall’s vehicle, and Goulet was involved in a crash involving a distracted driver.
Of the 1,798 people killed, 471 red bulbs on the tree represent the people killed by substance-impaired drivers and serves as a sad reminder of the sometimes-deadly consequences when people choose to drive while impaired. “We will continue to be the voice for the more than 400 people who would still be with their loved ones this holiday season if these impaired drivers would have stayed off the road,” MADD’s Lichtneger said. Three blue bulbs on the tree represent fallen law enforcement officers, and the 1,324 white bulbs signify all other traffic fatalities statewide. The illuminated tree will remain on the State Capitol Grounds throughout the holiday season.

Smart Home Devices to Help Seniors Age in Place Dear Savvy Senior, I’ve been talking to my mobility challenged mother, who lives alone, about automating her house with some smart home products to make it more convenient. She’s very interested but we’d like to get your opinion as to which types of smart devices are most helpful for seniors aging in place. Searching Daughter
Dear Searching, If your mother is game, smart home products – such as smart lights, video doorbells and voice-activated speakers – can be very useful for aging in place. These devices can add safety and convenience to a home by providing voice and app-controlled operation, which is extremely helpful for seniors who have mobility issues or reduced vision. Smart home technology can also provide family members peace-of-mind by giving them the ability to electronically keep tabs on their elder loved one when they can’t be there. If you’re interested in adding some smart home products to your mom’s house, she’ll need home Wi-Fi installed, and
she’ll need either a smartphone, tablet or smart speaker to operate them. To help you get started, here are some different types of devices to consider that are very helpful to older adults. Smart speakers: A smart speaker – like the Amazon Echo, Google Nest or Apple HomePod – can serve as the brains of a smart home, controlling the devices with voice commands or automating them. These devices can also play your mom’s favorite music, read audiobooks, make calls, set timers and alarms, provide reminders for medications, appointments and other things, check traffic and weather, answer questions, call for help in emergency situations and much more – all done by voice commands.
Smart light bulbs: To help prevent home falls – which are often caused by fumbling around a dark room looking for a light switch – smart light bulbs will let your mom turn on and off the lights by voice command, smartphone or tablet. These bulbs can also change brightness and color and be programmed to come on and off whenever she wants.
Smart plugs: These small units plug into a standard outlet and connect to the internet. That means your mom can control whatever she plugs into them – from a space heater to a coffee maker – using her voice or phone. Video doorbell: Safety is also a concern for older adults, especially those who live alone. A video doorbell would let your mom see and speak to visitors at the door without having to walk over and open it.
Smart locks: For convenience and safety, smart locks would give your mom keyless entry to her home, provide customized access to family, friends and caregivers, and let you monitor who comes and goes from your mom’s house. Smart thermostat: This lets your mom preprogram or manually control the temperature in her home with voice command or via phone, and let you monitor it too. Smart smoke alarms: These will alert your mom when smoke or carbon monoxide is detected and will also send alerts to your phone if a problem is detected. Stovetop shut-off: To prevent home
cooking fires, smart stovetop shut-off devices, like the IGuardStove, will turn off electric and gas stovetops when left unattended, and will alert you via text. Medical alert system: These devices provide wearable wrist and/or necklace emergency buttons that would allow your mom to call for help if she were to fall or need assistance. Many systems today also provide voice activated and fall detection features, and caregiver tracking apps that will let you keep tabs on her. Cameras and smart sensors: If your mom needs more in-depth monitoring, there are indoor cameras you can install so you can see, hear and talk to her from your phone. Or, if that’s too intrusive, you can install smart contact sensors on her doors so you can know when she comes and goes, or on her refrigerator door so you can know if she’s eating.
