Hometown Heroes worked into the morning hours restoring power By Loretta Cozart Around 6:20 p.m. on Sunday, December 17, an electrical outage occurred near Gaston St, affecting Circuit # 3, served out of distribution station # 4. The circuit serves the Indian Creek, Oakland St., Meadowbrook Rd., Hawthorne, S. Cansler St., W. Gold St. portions, S. Gaston/Kings Wood Apts., and the Falls St. area. The outage occurred after a cluster of massive, mature trees were uprooted due to the rain and wind, resulting in them falling onto the power lines and snapping two poles. By 7:30 p.m., 95 percent of power had been restored, according to the city. Crews worked through the night to restore the remaining five percent power outage in the Kingswood Apartment Complex. The final circuit
was placed back into service around 4:30 a.m. In a Facebook post, the City of Kings Mountain acknowledged those who worked to restore power, sharing, “We would like to thank all of the city employees (within three departments) who came together and worked tirelessly through the night to restore services to our residents.” • Electric Department: Daniel Kale, Rodney Bell, Maxx Cudd, Jordan Waycaster, Tucker Hamrick, Steven Tomberlin, Christian Keller, Jacob Carter, and Tyler Bowen. • Gas Department: Chase Gibson, Corbin Berryman, and Carson Ragsdale. • Water Department: Austin McDaniel, Donnie Spencer, and Nate Jones. Public hearing for Dixon Ridge By Loretta Cozart On Thursday, January 11, Kings Mountain City Council will conduct a Public Hearing for Dixon Ridge, the 384-acre Plan Development south of the I-85 interchange at Exit 5. The project has received opposition for over a year, and Thrive Kings Mountain collected more than 700 signatures urging the council not to approve the project. Kings Mountain’s Planning and
Zoning Board also recommended not to support rezoning. Several citizens spoke against the project during the last city council meeting. On November 28, Kings Mountain City Council approved the rezoning request with a few amendments. The property is located south of the I-85 bridge on Dixon School Road. The vote was 5 -2, with Councilmen Allen and West voting against.
NC Board of Elections delayed considering removal of Trump from 2024 ballot Last week, the North Carolina Board of Elections considered a challenge to former President Donald Trump’s ability to be on the ballot in the 2024 election. While the State board delayed consideration of the matter in a 4-1 vote, Democrats may bring the matter up again before the general election. Speaker Moore and Elections Chair Rep. Grey Mills have released the following statement: "In light of recent efforts by activists both here in North Carolina and others,
we believe it is necessary for us to explore legislative action to ensure the Democratic majority on the NC State Board of Elections does not have unchecked authority to remove a major political party’s nominee from the ballot. North Carolina will be a critical state in the upcoming presidential election, and removing a leading candidate in this race like President Trump would be an affront to democracy." In an unprecedented decision, on December 19, the Colorado Supreme Court removed former President Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 ballot. Other states are considering similar action

TODAY’S QUOTE:
With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts. –Eleanor Roosevelt
Pieces of Kings Mountain History Due to a resurgence of interest in the King Street Overhead LORETTA Bridge, with COZART personal requests for more information, the story of this Kings Mountain landmark is the topic of this week’s article, including a new photo. Do you drive across the King Street Overhead Bridge, spanning the Norfolk Southern Railroad, without thinking much about it? Well, let me tell you that it has an interesting history! So, up for a fascinating ride through time. The City of Kings Mountain grew around the railroad, leading to the establishment of many mills between the late 1800s and the 1920s. Over the years, the number of cars on the road and their travel speed increased, creating potential hazards for drivers. In the early 1930s, the State Highways Commission established Hwy. 74 / 29, replacing most of Hwy. 20 locally, and made efforts to discourage street-level rail crossings in downtowns.
Students from KMHS Class of 1952 posed on The Overhead Bridge for a yearbook photo. While somewhat difficult to see due to lack of contrast, the globes on the bridge have been replaced. These are original to the design and were announced in the Herald on January 9, 1939. Photo by Kings Mountain History Facebook page At that time, Hwy. 74 entered Kings Mountain at the Gaston County line on Cleveland Avenue (present-day Hwy. 216), not on King Street as it does now. To drive through Kings Mountain using the 1930 route, one would drive south on Cleveland Av-
enue, turn right on Kings Street, turn left at Battleground Avenue, turn right on Mountain Street (cross the railroad tracks), and proceed west to Shelby. It’s no wonder the town fathers wanted to change this convoluted route. See PIECES, Page 5A

We have the ability to stop this insane invasion of America but for some reason our leaders obviously want the masses to keep coming. This is fearful. How will these people survive in America? NC creates position The lesson of helping with child care the onion peel support for employees By Loretta Cozart
The NC Department of Commerce has created a Child Care Business Liaison position that will partner with businesses, local communities, government and philanthropic organizations to develop strategies employers can utilize to provide child care support to their employees. The creation of this new position, initially funded for three years, is part of North Carolina’s multiyear strategic economic development plan, which is entering its next stage. Part of the next phase of the plan is addressing the insufficient supply of high-quality and affordable child care in North Carolina. Applications for the position are now being accepted through Jan. 15, 2024. The Child Care Business Liaison position is also supported by Invest Early NC, a funder collaboration that promotes the development and sustainability of a comprehensive early childhood system in North Carolina. NCDHHS will equally invest in the new position and the NC Department of Commerce, connecting child care, economic development, and philanthropic resources to offer innovative solutions to North Carolina businesses. North Carolina’s multi-year strategic economic development plan entered its next stage of implementation on December 21, with the creation of a new position in the North Carolina Department of Commerce devoted to addressing the insufficient supply of high-quality and affordable child care in
North Carolina. The new Child Care Business Liaison, initially funded for three years at the state’s lead agency for economic development, will partner with businesses, local communities, government, and philanthropic organizations to develop strategies employers can utilize to provide child care support to their employees. “Education is the foundation of North Carolina’s economic success,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “Quality early childhood education gives children the start they need, gives the parents the opportunity to work, and gives employers the opportunity to hire those parents to strengthen their workforce. The person in the new position will help coordinate these efforts to help children, parents and businesses get the excellent childcare they all need.” “Our strategic plan for economic development focuses squarely on the need to provide companies with the best workforce in the world, and child care issues are workforce development issues,” said North Carolina Secretary of Commerce Machelle Baker Sanders. “Employers benefit when parents know their children are receiving quality care in a healthy environment -- and I know firsthand that those parents are more likely to stay in the workforce and are more productive and focused at work.” The Child Care Business Liaison position is also supported by Invest Early NC, a funder collaboration that promotes the
development and sustainability of a comprehensive early childhood system in North Carolina. “This grant-funded position will strengthen and institutionalize relationships among philanthropy, the Department of Commerce, and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services,” said Amber Payne of Invest Early NC. “Invest Early NC is pleased to partner with the State of North Carolina on our shared vision for an early childhood system that benefits all children, families, and communities in North Carolina.” The Departments of Commerce Health and Human Services will equally invest in the child care position, connecting child care, economic development, and philanthropic resources to offer innovative solutions to North Carolina businesses. “Early childhood education sits at the intersection of health and well-being, workforce and economic development as childcare gives parents the security they need and their children the high-quality learning that is critical to their success in life,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Kody H. Kinsley. “Our collaboration with N.C. Commerce is an innovative child care strategy that will build a stronger child care workforce and ultimately a stronger North Carolina.”

$350,000 house along with a seven or eight percent loan? Obviously not many as home sales are badly slumping right now. There is a lot to scare us in this world. Cancer, diabetes, neurological diseases, and more. When we do get sick there is the price tag that comes with waging a medical war to survive. So often, people postpone going to the doctor because they don’t want to see the medial bills and this ends up being a very unhealthy and often deadly decision. The whole scenario is fearful.
However, life is not to be lived in fear. Fear freezes us, paralyzes us, and overcomes us. We seldom move forward when frozen by fear. My hope for all of us is that we might overcome fear in our lives and dethrone the beast from ruling over us in 2024. My hope for you is that you might have the power of God in your life in such a way, that his presence will be greater in you than all the fears we are facing in the world. May you have this power in you in such a way that you will face this next year with strength and fearlessness.

How does this make sense? Interest rates may come down in 2024 but will they come down enough? A seven percent rate on a $40,000 car is a tough payment for many Americans. The housing market is struggling. Who can afford a
GRACE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
From Page 4A Unfortunately, drivers unfamiliar with the area often drove straight through the intersection of Kings Street and Battleground Avenue, over the embankment, and into the railroad cut. Even with barricades, the problem persisted. These accidents and associated deaths resulted in lawsuits; town fathers knew something had to be done. Davyd Foard Hood researched the history of the bridge and submitted the “King Street Overhead Bridge” National Register of Historic Places - Nomination and Inventory. To the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office in 2004. According to Mr. Foard, local businessmen ultimately built the bridge because they wanted to improve the routing of the road and obtain federal funding to build Hwy. 74 through Kings Mountain. A safe crossing and a westward extension of King Street were vital to achieving that goal. The Kings Street Overhead Bridge was funded with $125,000 in federal funds in 1938 and 1939. The Men’s Club named Jonie Brian Thomasson
as head of a committee to work with the Town Council and the State Highway Commission to secure the route. Four council members supported building a bridge, but Mayor ProTem C.E. Neisler, Jr. did not. Mayor James Herndon felt it was “necessary to determine what the damages will be” before voting, but his opinion did not prevail. The crux of the discussion was that the roadbed would have to be built very high west of the bridge. Editor of the Herald, Haywood Lynch, begrudgingly supported the project, stating “The overhead bridge has been officially approved by the Town Council. We have never been so enthusiastic about this location, but since most of the citizens who have expressed themselves and the Council are for it, we are in favor of it too.” On October 6, 1938, the Herald announced the awarding of two contracts for the bridge. It was thought the bridge would be built quickly, but construction stretched well into 1939. On January 9, 1939, the Herald announced that lights would be added to the bridge. Mr. Foard noted in his report, “On 6 April 1939,
the Herald’s editor Haywood E. Lynch offered a somewhat snide notice in his ‘Here and There’ column ‘Kings Mountain’s skyscraper bridge is now completed. All that is now to be done is for the two mountains leading to it to be made. Oh, and I almost forgot, a few basements to be made from what is now first-floor buildings.’” On the southwest side of King Street, you can see remnants of what Mr. Lynch was reporting today, especially the rooftops of several buildings below road grade. On June 1, 1939, councilman James Kirby Willis ensured he was the first to drive across the bridge. It wasn’t yet completed, but Willis noted to the Herald, “The fill is not near completed, but at one end, the grade has been filled in enough for a car to climb up.” Ultimately, 136 men were employed to build the bridge during the Great Depression. Battleground and Railroad Avenues, between Mountain and King Streets, had to be filled in and brought to grade level with the bridge. The resulting banks on either side were sodded. By the time the bridge was completed, Jonie Brian Thompson had been elected Mayor. He commented during the dedication ceremony on September 14, 1939. “Several sections of the new highway itself, from the bridge to Piedmont Avenue and just out from town, required filling. This filling required 58,000 cubic yards of dirt.” In an editorial published by the Herald, Mr. Lynch reported, “The Kings Mountain Overhead Bridge has been completed. It is a fine job of work and will be a credit to the city for many years. It will be a great aid in traffic, the elimination of accidents and will bring the city closer to the outside world.”

are not fairies. Look closer. That's just an old onion peel caught in the branches." The girls looked again, their eyes searching the tree. But all they saw were the delicate fairies, still dancing joyfully. They exchanged a knowing glance and whispered to each other, "Those are fairies." In that moment, a realization dawned on them – grown-ups couldn't see fairies. It was a secret that belonged only to the young and the young at heart. Years passed, and Dorothy and Alma grew up, but they never forgot the fairies in the oak tree. They carried the magic of that day in their hearts, a reminder that even in the toughest times, there was still room for wonder and joy. The moral of their story passed down through my family was simple yet profound: As long as you are young at heart, you will see wonders others cannot: The Fairies of Hope. Love and light, with blessings. This story, inspired by the memories of my mother, Alma Alleen Husky, serves as a testament to the enduring power of innocence and the magic that lives within us all.

Beyond Academics
Minimum requirements: Degree in Elementary Education with 1-2 years teaching experience. Experience with biblical integration is also essential. The Elementary School teacher must be able to manage a classroom effectively, teach with excellence, and be able to create an engaging, relational, and joy-Àlled learning environment with young students. Email resumes to:
My brother James Husky shared the following story with me and my siblings as part of our Christmas gift this year. As children, we heard many stories of our mother’s childhood that occurred in the expanse between my grandparents’ family homes in Tennessee and Wisconsin during the Great Depression. Here is the story James shared with us. In the year 1940, the world was still reeling from the shadows of the Great Depression. Yet, in a small, weathered shack on the outskirts of a forgotten town, the light of innocence and wonder shone brightly. Here lived two young sisters, Dorothy and Alma, with their mother, Vera. Dorothy, the elder, was a bright-eyed girl of seven, while Alma, her younger sister, was a curious soul of five. Despite the hardships they faced, their world was filled with laughter and simple joys. On this particular day, the sun was shining, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of spring. The girls were seated on the back steps of their humble home, lost in a world of
imagination with their ragged dolls. Inside, their mother, Vera, was busy with the day's chores. The sound of clinking dishes mingled with the girls' giggles, creating a symphony of everyday life. But then, something magical caught the girls' eyes. Looking up into the old oak tree that stood like a guardian over their home, Dorothy and Alma saw two small, shimmering figures dancing among the leaves. Their wings glinted in the sunlight, and their laughter was like the tinkling of tiny bells. "Fairies!" Alma gasped in awe. "Fairies," Dorothy echoed, her eyes wide with wonder. Together, they called out, "Mama, Mama, come look at the fairies!" Vera, her hands still damp from the dishwater, stepped outside, a smile playing on her lips at her daughters' excitement. "What fairies, my dears?" she asked, looking up into the tree. "There, Mama, look!" the girls exclaimed, pointing eagerly. Vera squinted, trying to see what had captured her daughters' imagination. Then, with a gentle laugh, she said, "Silly girls, those

Christmas Is Love… John 3:16 may be the most quoted verse in the Bible. It’s a message of good news for all people. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoso- Pastor Ron Caulder Eastside Baptist ever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. What joy there is in knowing that God loved us to the extent that He sent His only begotten Son to be our Savior… the only One sent by God who can forgive and cleanse us of our sins so that we can have eternal life. This is the reason Jesus came and why we celebrate His birth each year. By knowing Jesus as our Redeemer we have hope, peace, and joy
in knowing God’s great love for us. The Christ-Child is the embodiment of love. Love was when God through Jesus became God in the flesh. Jesus came into this world as God with us. God showed His love when He gave us His only begotten Son. God’s plan for providing salvation for those who would believe was not one the Father in heaven thought of at the last moment. God had a plan—a plan of love for all humanity who would receive His love through His Son. All one has do is to open the eyes of their heart and they will be able to see it. Look back again and see His cradle. We see His love at the manger in Bethlehem. God coming in the flesh as a totally helpless baby reminds us of why Jesus came. This Child would go to the cross of Calvary where He died for our sins. Whether you accept Him or not as your Savior, it doesn’t change the fact that He loves you and died for you on
the cross. His desire is for you to receive His love. If you are going to know this amazing love of God, you must go to the cross of Calvary where He died and bore your sins. In I John 3:1 we read “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us….” God loves you and you can’t change that. Again, you may reject His love, but His love goes on like light traveling through space. Those who open their eyes to the Light of the World are those who receive that love. Through the centuries His Light has been moving through history and that Light is here today to redeem those who will see. He is the King of Glory. He wears the crown of life and offers it to all who will repent and turn to Him. He rose from the dead and conquered the last enemy-death. Jesus is Lord! His name is above every name. He is crowned today in glory and sits at the right hand of God making in-
Wednesday, December 27, 2023 tercession for us. It is my Christmas prayer that your eyes will be open to see His great love for you for the first time or to renew your love for Him. Though Christmas Day has passed, God’s gift of love is still available every day. The Light of God’s love shines daily through His Son in this dark, sinful world! Now, may the love of God flow through you to others. One way you can show your love in our community throughout the year is through our Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry. If you are not familiar with our location, we are located at the back of the YMCA 218 Cleveland Avenue. The Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry gives assistance to individuals and families in financial crisis. For more information their phone number is 704739-7256 or on the web at kmcrisisministry.org. I close with a poem from Helen Steiner Rice. “For born in a manger at Christmas As a gift from the Father above, An infant whose name was called Jesus brought mankind the gift of God’s love… And the gifts that we give have no purpose Unless God is part of the giving And unless we make Christmas a pattern to be followed in everyday living.”

Ashbrook hands Mountaineers first Big South Conference loss Ashbrook outscored Kings Mountain 7-2 in the final two minutes to defeat the Mountaineers 77-73 in a battle of Big South 3A unbeatens Tuesday at Donald L. Parker Gymnasium. It was the last conference game of the 2023 part of the ’23-‘24 season but the Mountaineers will be at home December 27, 28 and 29 hosting their annual Mountaineer Classic tournament. After a January 3 non-conference battle at Weddington the Mountaineers will resume BSC play on Tuesday, January 9 at Hunter Huss. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Low Income Energy Assistance Program will begin accepting applications from older adults and people with disabilities on Dec. 1, 2023. The federally funded program helps low-income households with a one-time payment sent directly to their heating vendor to offset the high cost of warming their homes during the cold weather months. "We know the cost of most things is increasing, and keeping homes warm and safe this winter will be a bigger burden for some of our neighbors," said Carla West, Senior Director for Human Services at NCDHHS. "LIEAP helps ensure North Carolina’s older adults and people with disabilities who may be facing a financial hardship have the funds to help stay warm throughout these colder months." Payments will be distributed automatically to heating vendors beginning in December 2023 if a member of the

"What's It Worth?" Antique Appraisals with Mike Ivankovich By Loretta Cozart Do you ever wonder what those items you or your parents collected are worth? You are in luck because Mauney Memorial Library is hosting antique appraisals with Mike Ivankovich on Wednesday, January 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Mauney Memorial Library. Author, auctioneer, appraiser, and radio show Mike Ivankovich will introduce you to “What Determines Value" and reveal what your antiques, collectibles, and
personal treasures are really worth today. This program will be simultaneously presented in person and through Zoom. Each attendee is invited to bring in or virtually present 1-2 items for Mike to appraise. The event is for adults and will be held at the library at 100 S. Piedmont Avenue in Kings Mountain. For more information, call 704-7392371. Registration has yet to open, so visit the library’s website under the “Attend Programs” tab to register.
Join the Gaston County Beekeepers for their Annual 10-week Bee School and learn everything you need to know to get started in beekeeping. The course covers beekeeping history, bee anatomy, and behavior, setting up and managing your hive, keeping your bees healthy, nectar sources and blooming times, and honey production and marketing. In addition to classroom lectures, students will participate in two field days in April, where they will have the opportunity to work with live bees and apply what they’ve learned to demonstrate the proper way to open a hive, use a smoker, inspect a hive for the different types of bees, brood and honey, and pollen storage. There will also be additional optional workshops to teach specific activities (e.g., assembly of hive parts, honey harvesting). Tuition is $95.00, including the class textbook and a one-year member-
ship in the Gaston County Beekeepers Association and the NC State Beekeepers Association. In addition to the course, students will have the chance to take part in our wooden-ware assembly workshop and two field days where they can work with live bee colonies. Students
will also be able to buy bees and wooden ware at a discounted rate and participate in our honey harvesting/extracting workshop in early July. If you prefer a paper registration, please note that it must be mailed by January 12, in order to receive your information
on time. You can contact GCBA Registrar Jean Bess at (704)860-9380 to ensure available class space. Seating is limited, so sign up early! Online registration at https://www.gastonbee. org/bee-school-registration/

Himalayan Pain Relief Tea recall The Food and Drug Administration advises consumers not to purchase or use Himalayan Pain Relief Tea, a product promoted and sold for pain on various websites, including www.himalayan-painrelieftea.com, and possibly in some retail stores. FDA laboratory analysis confirmed that Himalayan Pain Relief Tea contains diclofenac and dexamethasone, which are not listed on the product label. Consumers taking Himalayan Pain Relief Tea should immediately consult their health care professional to
safely discontinue using this product. A healthcare professional should assess the risks of withdrawal from corticosteroids. Abrupt discontinuation can cause withdrawal symptoms. Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (commonly referred to as NSAID). NSAIDs may cause an increased risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, as well as serious gastrointestinal damage, including bleeding, ulceration, and fatal perforation of the stomach and intestines. This hidden drug ingredient may
also interact with other medications and significantly increase the risk of adverse events, particularly when consumers use multiple NSAID-containing products. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid commonly used to treat inflammatory conditions. Corticosteroid use can impair a person’s ability to fight infections and can cause high blood sugar levels, muscle injuries, and psychiatric problems. When corticosteroids are taken for a prolonged period or at high doses, they can suppress the adrenal gland. Only licensed healthcare
professionals can evaluate patients for the risk or existence of adrenal suppression. it up and tries to pass it off as game-used for a higher price. Autographs are even trickier. With the use of autopen, manufacturers can reproduce ink signatures hundreds of times. Again, there’s nothing wrong with selling autopen-signed items as long as they’re not misrepresented as personally signed by the player and priced accordingly. Buyers also need to watch out for online listings that describe items as “handsigned” without specifying whose hand-signed it. That could be technically correct but still highly misleading. Outright forgeries can be the hardest to spot, and this issue has plagued collectors for decades. If you don’t have time to become an autograph authentication expert but still want to make purchases, here are some steps you can take. How the scam works: Victims of this scam typically find fake sports merchandise through a social media ad or a quick web search. These online scam stores have great photos and low prices, making them look believable. Victims report that, at first, the purchase seems normal. The site charges their
credit card and sends a confirmation email. However, weeks pass, and the jersey never arrives. The anticipation of having a keepsake of a favorite team is suddenly dashed when the victim tries to contact customer service. They quickly find that neither the company nor the product exists. One disappointed fan reported the following: “This company advertised selling collector's items of sports merchandise in special boxes. Each box was supposed to have a number of team-related items like a jersey, signed football, mini helmet, etc. I paid 69.99 for the top box of Chicago Bears items. I got a cheap, no-brand jersey, an NFL keychain, and a face mask. I went to the website to ensure I didn't misread anything, and the site was not working. We did not expect to be scammed out of items and not get what we paid for.” How to avoid sports merchandise scams: • Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true. If the price of an item, collectible or not, is significantly less than what it is on other
NCDHHS is joining southeastern states, insurers, and national leaders in health care and public health for a collaborative effort to combat the congenital syphilis crisis. Congenital syphilis rates are on the rise nationwide. The South makes up a third of the U.S. population but accounts for more than half of reported congenital syphilis cases. In North Carolina, there have been seven neonatal
and stillbirth deaths due to congenital syphilis so far this year. In October, NCDHHS convened the Southeastern Congenital Syphilis Payer Summit in Raleigh to bring together representatives from Medicaid, public health, and the CDC to discuss partnerships to help reverse this devastating trend. A key outcome of this partnership was defining the screening standards and collaborating
with Southeast health providers to implement those standards: • Women should be tested for syphilis three times during their pregnancy: At their prenatal visit, between 28-32 weeks of gestation, and at delivery. • Newborns should not be discharged from the hospital until the mother’s delivery syphilis test results are known. NCDHHS is also
launching a health care provider outreach campaign to increase screening of pregnant women in all settings, increasing access to rapid tests for syphilis and HIV, and launching a media campaign this week to help raise awareness about the importance of syphilis testing for all sexually active individuals. To learn more about syphilis and where to get tested, go to the NCDHHS website.

suer. Before you trust a COA, ensure it contains full and correct details on who issued it, and then make sure they’re a legitimate and reputable authority. If investing in a less expensive purchase that is not offered with a COA, the buyer should still request a written representation from the seller about the authenticity and origin of the item. It is also essential to establish and get a written statement about the item’s physical condition before you purchase it. • Take extra care at charity auctions: Some scammers target charities by providing “donations” of fake memorabilia. When considering a bid for an item at a charity auction, be vigilant and watch out for suspicious price valuations and shady authentications. When in doubt about an item, consider donating to the charity rather than an auction purchase. • Seek a money-back guarantee: If possible, work with a dealer who can guarantee a full refund of your purchase if you ever discover it’s a fraud. Check all terms and conditions of the sale, especially limitations, before buying the item.

well-known retailers’ sites, this is a red flag that it might be a scam. • Research the company before you purchase. If the company is unfamiliar, check BBB.org to see if they have a BBB Business Profile or BBB Scam Tracker to see if anyone else has reported them as a scam. Look for contact information on the website, such as a phone number or brick-and-mortar address, as well as a robust social media presence to help determine if the company indeed does exist. • Never wire money or use a prepaid debit card as payment. Scammers often request both payment types, and once the money is gone, there is no way to get the money back. Instead, make online purchases with a credit card and only on secure (https) websites. • Double-check COAs: Certificates of authenticity (COAs) are the norm for memorabilia purchases, especially for costly items —so it’s likely that scammers will try to provide fake ones. A valid COA should state the qualifications and complete contact information of the is-

What Is the Retirement Saver’s Credit and How Does It Work? Dear Savvy Senior, Can you explain to me how the retirement saver’s tax credit works? My wife and I are in our fifties and are looking for creative ways to boost our retirement savings beyond our 401(k). Is this something we may be eligible for? Struggling to Save
Dear Struggling, If your income is low to moderate and you participate in your employer-sponsored retirement plan or an IRA, the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit (aka “Saver’s Credit”) is a frequently overlooked tool that can help boost your retirement savings even more. Here’s how it works. If you contribute to a retirement-savings account like a traditional or Roth IRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457, Thrift Savings Plan, Simplified Employee Pension or SIMPLE plan, the Saver’s Credit will allow you to claim 10, 20 or 50 percent of your contribution of up to $4,000 per year for couples or $2,000 for singles. Keep in mind that a credit is not the same as a tax deduction – it’s better: While a
tax deduction just reduces the amount of your income that is subject to taxes, a tax credit reduces your actual tax bill dollar-for-dollar.
To qualify, you must also be at least 18 years old and not a full-time student and were not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return. And your adjusted gross income (AGI) in 2023 must be below $73,000 or less as a married couple filing jointly, $54,750 or less if filing as head of household, or $36,500 or less if you’re a single filer. These income limits are adjusted annually to keep pace with inflation. To get the 50 percent credit, you’ll need to have an income below $43,500 for married couples filing jointly; $32,625 if you’re filing as head of household; and $21,750 if you’re a single filer in 2023. The 20 percent credit rate applies to couples earning between $43,501 to $47,500; for head of household filers it’s $32,626 to $35,625; and for individuals it’s $21,751 to $23,750.
And the 10 percent rate is for couples with an adjusted gross income between $47,501 and $73,000; for head of household filers $35,626 to $54,750; and individuals it’s between $23,751 and $36,500. Here’s an example of how this works. Let’s say that you and your wife earned $75,000 in 2023. Over the course of the year, you contributed $4,000 to your employer’s 401(k) plan. After deducting your 401(k) contribution, your adjusted gross income (AGI) on your joint return is now $71,000. Since your AGI puts you in the 10 percent credit bracket, and you’ve contributed the $4,000 maximum that can be considered for the credit, you are entitled to a $400 Saver’s Credit on your tax return. It’s also worth mentioning that the Saver’s Credit is in addition to any other tax benefits you get for your retirement contributions. So, in the previous example, not only would you be entitled to a $400 credit, but you would also be able to exclude the $4,000 401(k) contribution from your taxable income. So, if you’re in
the 12 percent tax bracket, this translates to an additional $480 in savings, for a total of $880. How to Claim To claim the Saver’s Credit, you will need to fill out Form 8880 (see IRS.gov/pub/ irs-pdf/f8880.pdf) and attach it to your Form 1040 or 1040NR when you file your tax return. For more information on the Saver’s Credit, see IRS Publication 590-A “Contributions to Individual Retirement Arrangements” (IRS.gov/pub/irs-pdf/ p590a.pdf). The IRS also offers an online quiz you can take to help you determine if you qualify for the Saver’s Credit. To access it go to IRS.gov/Help/ITA – click on “Do I Qualify for the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit?” under the “Credits” tab. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.
