Marilyn Sellers retires as KM’s City Manager

Last week, the Herald caught up with Marilyn Sellers just one week before her retirement. Sellers is currently acting as Assistant City Manager since the new City Manager, Jim Palenick, took over that role on January 1. Her last official day with the city of Kings Mountain was Tuesday, January 31.

We asked Marilyn what plans she has after retirement, and she shared, “My daughter is getting married in June.” Marilyn and her husband, Jody, have two daughters, Johana, and Morgan. “I am also preparing my house in the city for sale. We are building a house on my husband’s family property in Oak Grove and my daughter is remodeling the family home place there. We enjoy boating and camping. Jody enjoys restoring cars and even has a YouTube channel, so I’m sure I’ll be helping with that.”

At the December city council meeting, it became evident this is a close-knit family. In passing on the morning of December 15, Marilyn mentioned to her daughter Johana that that night’s city council meeting would be her last sitting in the city manager’s chair. That got Johana’s attention, and unbeknownst to her mother, she sprang into action.

She called City Clerk Karen Tucker and together with sister Morgan, they

worked on some surprises for the city council meeting. At that meeting, Johana spoke about her mother. As family sat in the council chambers, and sister Morgan listened in from California, Johana shared stories of their mom, and that, “She came to work at the city through a job with a staffing company. Little did she know that she’d spend the rest of her career here.”

“To mom, city hall is more than a government building or a place to pay a bill… This building is also where my mom and dad met. Back in 1991, dad came to city hall to pay a bill. Little did he know he’d meet the love of his life. But for mom, she’s had a headache ever since,” Johana said laughing.

Bishop Brady E. Jackson Sr., 67, passed away Monday, January 23, 2023. Bishop Jackson was a native of Cleveland County. He was born July 27, 1955. He was the son of the late Broadus Jackson, Sr. and Callie Elizabeth Martin Jackson.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, his brother Bobby Eugene Jackson, mother-in-law Louise Dover, sister-in law Katheryn Jackson, and brother-in-law Ronald Dover.

Bishop Jackson is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pastor Teresa Dover Jackson, daughter Charity Nicole Jackson Nolen and husband Alex, son Brady Lee Jackson, Jr. and wife Teresa Lynn, brother Broadus Jackson, Jr. and wife Judy, sister-in-law Kimberly Smith and husband Jamey, Sr.

Bishop Jackson was like a modern-day Abraham because his descendants, natural and spiritual are as numerous as the sands on the seashore or the stars in the midnight sky. His biological grandchildren are Maddy Grace and Dessa Kate Nolen, Joshua Caleb and Elijah Patrick Jackson, also included are Samantha Brooke Main and husband Jeffery, Brody Owenby, Kayla Sanford, and their children.

Honorable mention to his nephews and nieces: Timothy and Hope Jackson, Travis, Tyler, David, Melissa, Kaylee, Anthony, Jamey Jr., Matthew, also Brandy, Jennifer, Holly, Kathy, Crystal, and their spouses and children, and Laura Sutton and husband Shannon. Bishop Jackson had a huge extended family of those who attended Royal Praise Ministries, Royal Priesthood Motorcycle Ministry, and Royal Priesthood Biker Church and the leadership team of Nolens, Kales, Burnetts, Norrises, Guin and Hesters.

Bishop Jackson traveled extensively sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He had the opportunity to minister in countries such as Haiti, Nigeria, Ghana, India, Russia, and all throughout the Caribbean Islands. Bishop Jackson founded Royal Praise Ministries in 1982 and “Just Men” Fellowship in 2002. Under the flagship of Royal Praise Ministries, other ministries have been establish including Royal Priesthood Motorcycle Ministry and Royal Priesthood Biker Church and Coalition of Christian Bikers with Pastors Junior and Tracey Norris at the helm.

When asked how he was, “Blessed and highly favored” was one of Bishop Jackson’s favorite sayings. And truly, this mighty man of God was not only Blessed, but was also a Blessing. There are not enough words to say how much he will be missed. He has now made Heaven his home to see Jesus face to face.

The family received friends 12:30pm-2:00pm, Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Royal Praise Ministries. Funeral services followed in the church at 2:00pm, with Dr. Paul Brintley officiating.

Vicki AnnThrift

SHELBY, NC – Vicki Armstrong Thrift joined her parents and husband in heaven on January 28th, 2023. She was born August 5, 1948, to Oliver Bryson (Junior) and Mary Rebecca (Beck) Armstrong. She was married in 1965 to the late Harold Thrift. Vicki was also preceded in death by her brother Tommy Armstrong. A Cleveland County native, Vicki lived in Kings Mountain, Lawndale, or Shelby for most of her life. She was a resident of the Wendover Hospice House in Shelby when she passed. The family wishes to say a special thank you to her special friend Faye Allison. Vicki and Faye worked together for many years at FASCO in Shelby. Outside of work, Vicki enjoyed traveling, reading, lake life, birdwatching, her family, and her numerous animals especially her dogs.

Surviving siblings include Chuck Armstrong with wife Joy, Debbie Robinson with husband Jeff (Bunky), Mary Lynn with husband David, Todd Armstrong, Terrie Smith Armstrong, and Libby Armstrong.

In addition to her siblings, Vicki had many nieces and nephews that she loved and that loved her. These included Tomasina Armstrong, Roy Armstrong, Heath Armstrong, Amy Robinson, Jeffrey Robinson, Sara Lynn Wood, Mary Kathryn Conner, Kevin Lynn, Hayden Lynn, Sophie Williams, Zach Smith, Henry Lewis, William Lewis, Kaylon Shelton, and many others.

Vicki will be truly missed by her family and friends.

Allen Humphries passed away on January 10, 2023.

Gail was born in Kings Mountain, North Carolina on December 20, 1934. She was the daughter of David Hunter Allen and Inez Bennett Allen.

Gail is pre-deceased by her brother William Allen and sister Ramona Allen Richardson.

Gastonia names new Police Chief

City of Gastonia has named Interim Police Chief Trent Conard as the next permanent Police Chief for the Gastonia Police Department (GPD). He joined the GPD in 1996 and brings more than 28 years of experience to his new position. Conard was named Interim Police Chief in October 2022. Chief Conard will continue to lead the daily operations of the Police Department and the work of over 200 dedicated women and men who serve the community in sworn and civilian positions.

The city advertised the position nationwide and received over 40 applications. There were eight candidates interviewed and four selected to participate in an extensive assessment center conducted by Centralina Regional Council. The assessment panel consisted of police chiefs and city managers from around the Charlotte region, along with some Gastonia community leaders.

Kings Mountain Police Department became aware of rumors on social media sites of an active shooter threat at Kings Mountain High School on Thursday, January 26, and posted on Facebook that KMPD officers and Cleveland County school officials were actively investigating these rumors and would advise further information when information became available.

Bullock Building condemned

The Bullock Building at 126 W. Mountain Street in Kings Mountain was condemned by City of Kings Mountain and a notice was posted. The notice reads, “This structure is unsafe for human occupancy pursuant to NCGS 160D-1119. The use or occupation of this building for human habitation is prohibited and unlawful due to either defective construction, dilapidation, decay, insanitation, unsafe wiring or heating system, inadequate means of egress, damage by fire or wind, overloaded

Gov. encourages eligible North Carolinians to claim Earned Income Tax Credit

Last week, Governor Cooper joined the United States Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service in recognizing January 27 as Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day to encourage eligible North Carolinians to claim the tax credit on their upcoming federal taxes.

“North Carolina families should take a moment today to determine if they are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “This can help hard working families with tax relief they deserve.”

For over forty-five years,

the EITC has been supporting hardworking people by offering tax credits to lowto moderate-income workers and families. The EITC, combined with the Child Tax Credit (CTC), lifts over nine million people out of poverty annually – half of them children.

North Carolina residents who earned less than $59,187 from wages, income from a job where the employer didn’t withhold tax, or money made from self-employment including owning and operating a business or farm last year may qualify for the EITC and might not know it. Those who don’t claim the credit are missing a tax benefit they have earned.

The resources below offer support in identifying if residents are eligible for

the EITC and supplemental help in completing and filing their taxes.

• The Internal Revenue Service offers an interactive online tool, EITC Assistant at www.irs.gov/eitcassistant, that guides taxpayers through EITC eligibility and estimates their possible credit.

GPD searching for missing teen

Detectives from the Gastonia Police Department are asking the public for help in locating missing 16-year-old Raymond Justin Edwards.

Family reported that they last saw Edwards on January 25 when he left his Hillcrest Avenue home. He was last seen walking toward S. York Road. Edwards is approxi-

mately 5’7” tall and weighs 140 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Edwards was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt, black pants, and black shoes.

Golden Leaf Food Distribution Program

Food Distribution Assistance Program is funded by an appropriation from the N.C. General Assembly and up to $250,000 per project is available for the following:

• Grants to nonprofit organizations to assist those organizations in (i) becoming eligible to be partner agencies of a North Carolina food bank or (ii) enhancing or expanding the capacity of current partner agencies of North Carolina food banks.

• Grants to nonprofit organizations to assist those organizations in (i) establishing a school-based weekend food assistance program or (ii) enhancing or expanding the capacity of current schoolbased weekend food assistance programs.

Funds may be used for a variety of purposes, including building renovation or expansion, large equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks), small

equipment, dry good storage shelves, freezers/coolers, vehicles to transport food, freezer blankets, tents or other equipment for drivethru or outdoor distribution, ServSafe Certification classes, computers or tablets, project-related staffing including grant and construction administration.

Educator professional development awards available

The Governor’s Educator Discovery Awards recognize the value of quality professional development for teachers at all phases of their careers. The program will provide a stipend of up to $1,000 for preK-12 traditional public and public charter school teachers to pursue a professional development experience of their choosing.

Teachers can use the grant award to attend a workshop or conference that deepens their subject area knowledge, such as a coding workshop for computer science teachers, or a session on how to create a project-based learning experience for students. Applicants need to describe how their participation in the professional development experience will enhance their efforts to create a work-based learning activity for their students.

Work-based learning strengthens the state’s talent pipeline by providing North Carolinians with career awareness, career exploration, and real-world career experience to build employability and technical skills. Workbased learning creates deeper connections between class-

room curriculum and future careers. Work-based learning is a powerful tool for engaging and motivating students. These experiences generate a more well-rounded education improving a students’ chance for future success.

The Governor’s Educator Discovery Award asks teachers to connect their proposed professional development opportunity with the workbased learning that happens in their classroom. Successful applicants explain how their professional development opportunity will enhance their ability to create work-based learning activities for their students.

Educators can I apply for funding to attend any professional development opportunity, but applicants must specify their professional development opportunity ahead of time, and their choice will be evaluated as part of their application package. Atrium Health Mobile Medicine paramedic Calvin Cobb was in between patient visits when he came across what he thought was a minor fender bender on the side of a busy road in Cleveland County in early January.

“I was headed back to the hospital when I saw two cars pulled over and a woman in the road trying to flag someone down,” says Calvin. “Something didn’t seem right and then I saw a man lying on the ground and I knew I had to stop.”

And if Calvin didn’t stop, this story would have a much different outcome.

Lying on the ground was 32-year-old Brandon Hord. In laymen’s terms – he was dead. He wasn’t breathing and he didn’t have a pulse. Calvin immediately began CPR and, for a short time, found a pulse. Given he has a wealth of life-saving experience from working in the emergency room at Atrium Health Cleveland to serving as a certified CPR instructor, Calvin knew these moments were critical and continued CPR until first responders arrived.

Brandon felt pain in his chest for about two days. He wasn’t sure what was happening. Could it be anxiety or something worse? He knew cardiac issues ran in his family, but never suspected a heart attack at such a young age.

When the pain became unbearable, Brandon’s mother drove him to the hospital. On the way there, he tried to call 911 but his heart stopped beating and his mother made the call. That’s how Brandon ended up lying on the ground on the side of the road.

“The last memory I have of that day was trying to call 911,” says Brandon. “And then I remember flashes of a defibrillator and asking the first responders if I could talk to my daughters.”

Many would say Brandon is extremely lucky. He says the type of heart attack he suffered is called a “widow maker,” because it’s so often deadly – es-

pecially outside hospital walls. But, thanks to several good Samaritans, including Calvin, Brandon lived to celebrate his 33rd birthday on January 23.

Calvin continued CPR as other help arrived. As an instructor, even Calvin is surprised a little when he performs CPR in real life.

“You fall back on your training, it’s like muscle

memory,” adds Calvin. “No matter how many times you do it (CPR) there are a million things running through my head, but I remember this is what I need to do next; then this; and your brain and your body just kick into autopilot, in a sense.”

Days after Brandon’s heart attack, the two men were introduced and realized they are connected by more than just this life-changing event. Both men work for Atrium Health, within the Mobile Medicine department –Calvin, as a paramedic seeing patients in their home via Atrium Health Hospital at Home, and Brandon as a communication specialist with MedCenter Air, dispatching crews on other life-saving missions.

“I remember his mom saying he works for MedCenter Air, but it didn’t click,” says Calvin. “I was focused on the CPR. But, wow, how things work out!”

“It is wild,” adds Brandon. “To have someone you work with in the same department, but don’t know, be able to assist you in your time of need, is incredible and something I am extremely grateful for.”

Calvin is the first recipient of Atrium’s Mobile Integrated Health Warrior award based upon what Calvin did, and they look forward to having more recipients in the future.

To be sure, we have all been there, and it seems bad manners and apathy abound.

Today it feels like there is less love and

more hate in the world than ever before. The downright hostility toward others can be seen in news headlines worldwide. It is incredibly tempting to slip into this culture of uncaring and hatred. What are we to do? As Christians, we can show the love of Jesus to others and fight against culture. Fighting the good fight might seem overwhelming or a hopeless quest, but I bear witness to this fact, people look at you differently, and your efforts make a difference. A simple ges-

ture such as giving up a parking space, returning a cart, or offering up a kind word to the cashier can make people look at you differently.

Moreover, a Gospel conversation with someone can make a significant impact. But know this, we cannot and will not succeed in our strength. John, in his first letter, emphasizes to his readers to fight sin and love others with the love that God has given to us.

In 1 John 4:7-11 he writes to believers, “Dear friends, let us

love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love

one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”

What an incredible truth! We have an opportunity to show God’s love to others. Yes, this world can be cruel, yet the love of Christ, which saved us, can be seen in us to give light to others. We are called and compelled to love. What is our motivator? John provides us with the answer in vs. 19-21, “We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet

hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.”

This week, let us walk God’s Spirit of love and love one another as Jesus loves you.

American Legion Post 82 creates foundation

Martha Bridges, Commander of American Legion Post 82, announced the establishment of the Post 82 Foundation, a Charitable Trust for Post 82. The IRS and the NC Secretary of State have approved the trust. The Foundation was created because of the growing activities and programs sponsored by Post 82. Commander Bridges explained that ten years ago, Post 82 had 140 members between the Post and Auxiliary. Today we have over 400 American Legion Family members (since we added the Sons of The American Legion and Legion Riders). They have increased the number of youth programs from a single oratorical contest to additional programs involving over 100 students. The number of youth programs now includes not only the oratorical contest, but

baseball and softball teams, Junior shooting sports (air rifle team), Student Trooper, Tarheel Boys and Girls State, and a sponsored Boys Scout troop.

The Foundation is permitted to receive corporate and United Way contributions. The creation of a Foundation will enable individuals or corporations to contribute to the local post’s many programs, which benefit veterans and youth in our community. As a 501c3, donors can now deduct their contribution.

The Foundation’s Mission Statement is to improve the lives of veterans, youth, and citizens of Cleveland County by supporting the four pillars on which The American Legion was founded. Those four pillars are National Defense, Americanism, Children & Youth, and Veterans Rehabilitation.

Foundation Board officers were elected: Ric Francis, President; Martha Bridges, Treasurer; and Zach Parker, Secretary. Two additional Board members were elected: Jim Quinlan and Victor Darville. The Board has approved their bylaws and mission statement.

Foundation Board members recently met with Kelli Steele, Home Trust Bank Branch Manager, to finalize financial requirements.

As the Foundation grows, Shelby’s American Legion Post 82 and Unit 82 plan to be more visible in the community and eventually to be able to provide financial assistance adhering to its mission statement and guiding principles.

Mix all ingredients together and form loaf in a shallow pan.

2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

3 tbs. brown sugar

2 tbs. mustard

Mix and pour over meat loaf.

Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

2 sticks margarine

2 tsp. vanilla

1 cup black walnuts

2 cups flour, un-sifted

5 large eggs

½ cup shortening

¼ tsp. black walnut flavoring

1 cup sugar

1 cup milk

Combine margarine, shortening and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, mix well after each egg/ dd vanilla, mix well. Add flour and milk alternately and ending with flour. Stir in walnuts. Bake 350 degrees for 1 hour and 25 minutes.

Greg Lloyd resigns as winningest coach in 100-year history of Mountaineer football

Greg Lloyd, the winningest football coach in the 100-year history of Kings Mountain High football, has resigned after 16 years with the Mountaineers.

Lloyd’s accomplishments were many during that time. He compiled a record of 133-71 which included conference championships in 2008, 2017, spring 2021 and 2022. His Mountaineers played for the Western Regional championship in 2008, 2015, 2018 and 2019. Prior to coming here he coached two years at East Gaston and led the Warriors to their conference championship. His teams here posted a 21-13 record in playoff games and his 2019 team set the all-time school record of 653 points in a season. He was Southwestern Foothills Conference Coach of the Year in 2008 and Big South Conference Coach of the Year in 2017, 2021 and 2022. He served as head coach of the West team in the 2017 NCHSAA East-West game. His 2021-22 team had the second highest GPA in the state. Over 60 of his players went on to play college football. Many of the seniors on his last team (fall of 2022) will be playing college football in the fall.

Lloyd was inducted into the Kings Mountain Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.

“I’ll never forget how excited I was to be in Kings Mountain,” he said. “It was such a great opportunity and the support was great. The talent was always very good.”

One of the first things Lloyd did was to bring Kevin Cruise, Dustin Morehead and Craig Short to join his coaching staff.

“We got off to a good start,” Lloyd said. “That second year everything started coming together. We had Michael Roberts (at quarterback) and a lot of other good players and we shutout Shelby 21-0. We went to the playoffs and in the third round we beat Mooresville, who had a 200-yard per game rusher and we held him to just a few yards. That was a phenomenal season.

“We lost out to Kannapolis and Coach (Ron) Massey. Michael Roberts had hurt his ankle the week before but we still made it a close game.”

Lloyd and the Mountaineers had some good teams in the seasons that followed, but beginning in 2015 the team got on a roll that continues to this day.

“We really started to win

really helped us. We went to Freedom (in the playoffs) and they had B.J. Emmons who was one of the most highly recruited running backs in the nation. They were coming into the game with a 13-0 record and we beat them.

“In the 2018 playoffs undefeated Northwest Cabarrus came in and we had people like Kaylon Wade, Kobe Paysour and Ricaylen Mack and we beat them.

“Another big game I remember was in 2019 at Charlotte Catholic and it was 7-7 after regulation. We went seven overtimes and lost 5649. We beat Shelby 42-17 that year and that was a really big win for us.

but we swept the county. We broke a long losing streak against Shelby. We hadn’t beaten them since ’86.

“In the ’21 playoffs we drove 98 yards at the end of the game to beat a good Franklin team. Last season we swept the county and beat South Point but we lost in the playoffs to East Lincoln.

“During my time here we had good players and good fans,” he noted. “We always had big crowds. I appreciate the band and cheerleaders and the support of the parents and fans. Everybody did their part.

“I appreciate our principals. Ronny Funderburke gave me the opportunity to

during my time were really good – Suzanne Grayson, Mark Latham, Dustin Morehead and Matt Bridges. All of them supported me. It’s just been exciting coaching in Kings Mountain. I know I’m going to miss it a lot. I may coach again someday but right now I just need to take the fall off so I can watch Maggie play (at Western) and then Jake wherever he goes.

“I’m very thankful for my time as the football coach at Kings Mountain. It was really special. I think I will get back into coaching someday. I’ve been coaching for 28 falls. You’ll definitely see me coaching again. I hope I’ve got some good years left.

“Football shaped me,” he added. “I hope the players have learned some life lessons from us. I’m grateful for the support of the fans and for all the friends we’ve made in Kings Mountain. Kings Mountain is a great community.

“I can still see (the late) Major Loftin at every practice, and I’ll never forget (the late KMHS equipment manager) Donnie Mace. They were special Mountaineers.

“I had two coaches that are no longer with us – Brent Bagwell and Jeff Putnam. They were excellent men and excellent coaches. And, I want to thank superintendents Bruce Boyles and Stephen Fisher who were great supporters of our program and really good to me. It was an honor to know them and all the other good people in Kings Mountain. I have memories that will last me forever.”

Although he won’t be on the sidelines, Coach Lloyd said he won’t be a stranger.

“I will still be around and will be supporting the program from now on,” he said. “We have a lot of talented players coming back and I expect them to do very well this year. It will be a fun year for the Mountaineers.

“I want to thank Beth. She’s the perfect coach’s wife. She let me live out my dream. And, I want to thank Maggie and Jake. I watched them in sports from the time they were little until they grew up. I’m just thankful for everybody that supported me. I had tons of help. It’s been a great 16 years.”

Mountaineer athletic director Matt Bridges, who was also one of Lloyd’s assistant coaches, said the school planned to begin accepting applications for the head football job this week.

“I would like to thank and congratulate Coach Greg Lloyd for his 16 years of service to our football program, school and community,” Bridges said. “Coach Lloyd and the Lloyd family have dedicated their lives to building a successful program on and off the field, and they will be greatly missed. Coach Lloyd is a great coach and an even better person. The life lessons he taught his student-athletes and coaches will continue to leave a lasting impact for years to come. I wish the best for Coach Lloyd as he steps into the next chapter of his life.”

Mountaineers sweep Wildcats, Stuart Cramer here on Tuesday

Kings Mountain High’s basketball teams swept North Gaston in a Big South 3A Conference doubleheader Friday night at KM’s Parker Gym.

The KM girls won easily, 59-23, but the Mountaineers had to come from behind in the final two minutes to defeat the Wildcats 55-49 and hold onto a share of first place in the BSC with the Crest Chargers. Both teams were 8-2 in the BSC heading into Tuesday night’s action at home against the Forestview Jaguars.

The North Gaston boys scored the first four points of the game and led most of the way until the Mountaineers made a charge in the final three minutes to pull out the win and maintain their share of the BSC lead with the Crest Chargers. Hunter Huss, which had been tied for first, dropped to third with a loss to the South Point Red Raiders.

KM was down 45-39 with 4:41 left on the clock but rallied to come within 47-45 with just over three minutes left. The Mountaineers went to a pressing defense and Zay Smith canned a pair of free throws to tie the score at 47-all with 2:51 remaining.

It was still tied at 49-all when North Gaston lost the ball out of bounds with 1:26 remaining. Bradley Floyd, who was limited to three points on the night, canned a pair of free throws to put the Mountaineers up 51-49 with 39.1 seconds remaining.

After a North timeout, the Wildcats missed a field goal attempt and KM rebounded. Bryson Brown sank two free throws in

a five-second span to put KM up 54-49. Smith’s steal that led to a Floyd free throw with 3.3 seconds left rounded out the scoring.

Smith finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists to lead the KM attack. Simpson added 10 points.

In the opening contest

the KM ladies broke on top early and led the entire game to run their record to 3-7 in the BSC and 9-10 overall.

CoRey Simpson had one of her best games of the season with 18 points and Khalia King was right behind her with 16. Tyasya Bell added six, Aaliya Miller five, Alayna Patrick four, Allysia Pettis three and Mia Bridges one.

The Lady Mountaineers rolled to a 28-6 halftime lead and were up 40-11 after three quarters of play. The lead stretched to 30 points (43-13) with 5:40 remaining and went to a high of 51-15 with 2:52 left on the clock.

The Kings Mountain teams will travel to South Point Friday which is a key game in determining post-season playoff seedings. The KM teams will be at home for their final two regular season games.

Huss sweeps Mountaineers

Hunter Huss swept Kings Mountain in a Big South Conference doubleheader last week in Gastonia.

The Huss ladies prevailed 52-40 before the Huskies avenged an earlier loss at KMHS with a 59-46 win.

Aaliyah Miller scored 12 points and Khalia King 10 to lead the KM ladies.

CoRey Simpson added seven, Tyasya Bell four, Allysia Pettis, Mia Bridges and Farri Martin two each and Austyn Dixon one.

Curtis Simpson had

a good all-around game with 11 points and nine rebounds. Tucker Robinette also scored 11 points. Zay Smith had nine points and four assists and Qua Sanders eight points and nine rebounds.

KM swept at Shelby Patriots win two more games, to host West Lincoln Thursday

Kings Mountain High’s basketball teams dropped a doubleheader to Shelby Wednesday night on the Lions’ home court.

The Shelby boys fought off a Mountaineer comeback attempt in the fourth quarter to win 51-49 after the Shelby ladies cruised 58-30 in the opener.

The Lions jumped out front 16-10 after the first quarter but the Mountaineers trimmed the difference to 27-25 at the half. Shelby’s defense held the KM five to just eight points in the third quarter and took a 40-33 lead into the final chapter.

Kings Mountain Middle School’s boys basketball team got back on the winning side with two victories during the past week over Lincolnton and North Lincoln.

In the first game, the Patriots defeated the Wildcats of Lincolnton 49-29. Xavier Hutchens, Christian Hill and Silas Tate led the scoring with 10 points each. KJ Bell scored six, Christian Jarrett and Nazire Davis four each, Camren Houser and Yates Toney two each and Qua Ingram one.

The Patriots took an 8-7 lead after the first period and extended the lead to 25-20 at the half. Three pointers by KJ Bell and

Christian Hill gave the Patriots a 25-20 lead at the half. Silas Tate and Xavier Hutchens combined for 14 points during the first quarter and Hill and Bell both hit their second three of the game to give the KM team its biggest lead at 40-17.

During the fourth quarter, Camren Houser and Yates Toney finished off the scoring as KM finished with three double-digit scorers.

In the second game of the week, the Patriots took on the Panthers of North Lincoln. Tate and Davis paced the Pats with four points each to take a slim four-point lead heading into the second quarter. During the period Hill con-

tinued his hot shooting as he made two threes to extend the KM lead to 25-17.

KM picked up its man to man defense, led by Christian Jarrett’s spectacular shot blocking and rebounding.

In the fourth quarter the Patriots were able to hold off a North Lincoln charge which resulted in a 35-all tie with less than four minutes to go. KM’s Tate scored seven of his game-high 20 points, and Hutchens’ free throws and Davis’s defense helped seal the victory.

Tate finished with 20 points to lead the Patriots to their sixth win in eight starts, including 5-1 in the division. Nazire Davis

added eight points, Xavier Hutchens six, Christian Hill six, Christian Jarrett two and KJ Bell one.

Offensive players of the week were Silas Tate (30) points and Xavier Hutchens (18 points). Defensive player of the week was Christian Jarrett with several blocks and key rebounds. Sixth man of the week was Christian Hill who canned four threes. Kings Mountain carried a 5-1 division and 6-2 overall record into a game Monday at Burns which was a battle for first place. KM is home on Thursday against West Lincoln.

NCDHHS funds recovery services for students with substance abuse

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has awarded more than $3.2 million to nine colleges and universities across the state to increase access to recovery services and supports on campuses for students with substance use disorders. Collegiate Recovery Programs (CRPs) have been in existence for more than 40 years. They were developed in response to the growth in drug and

alcohol use among adolescents and young adults, the risks posed to students while on campus and the unique needs of students in recovery. CRPs provide services and educational opportunities in a supportive environment as well as promote personal accountability while attending a public or private college or university.

"These recovery programs support young adults at a critical juncture in their lives," said Kelly Crosbie, MSW, LCSW, Director of the NCDHHS Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Services. "College can be very stressful, especially

for young adults struggling with substance use or mental health issues. These programs provide an educational opportunity alongside recovery support to ensure students do not have to sacrifice one for the other."

Campuses will use these funds to develop and implement comprehensive collegiate recovery programs that provide access to drug- and alcohol-free places and locations for students to live, study and socialize, provide peer mentorship and receive other recovery supports. Funds may also be used to provide alcohol-free and drug-free social activities for students, as part of the

collegiate recovery programming.

An identified priority for NCDHHS, funding for collegiate recovery programs has been provided since 2015 and supported programs in 13 out of the 17 universities in the UNC system. Last year, $873,760 was distributed and helped serve approximately 320 students. Today’s awards will significantly expand this investment and increases access to substance use disorder recovery services available at public or private, non-profit colleges and universities across the state.

The nine colleges or universities receiving grant funds are:

What Happens if You Work While Receiving Social Security?

Dear Savvy Senior, I started drawing my Social Security retirement benefits back in 2021 when I was forced to retire early, but I’m now interested going back to work part-time. Will this affect my benefits, and if so, how much? Back to Work

Dear Back, You can collect Social Security retirement benefits and work at the same time but depending on how old you are and how much you earn, some or all of your benefits could be temporarily withheld. Here’s how it works.

SSA Earning Rules

Social Security says that if you’re under your full retirement age and are collecting benefits, then you can earn up to $21,240 in 2023 without jeopardizing any of your Social Security if you don’t reach your full retirement age this year. But if you earn more than the $21,240 limit, you’ll lose $1 in benefits for every $2 over that amount.

Full retirement age is 66 for those

born between 1943 and 1954, but it rises in two-month increments every birth year to age 67 for those born in 1960 and later. You can find your full retirement age at SSA.gov/benefits/ retirement/planner/ageincrease.html.

In the year you reach your full retirement age, a less stringent rule applies. If that happens in 2023, you can earn up to $56,520 from January to the month of your birthday with no penalty. But if you earn more than $56,520 during that time, you’ll lose $1 in benefits for every $3 over that limit. And once your birthday passes, you can earn any amount by working without your benefits being reduced at all.

Wages, bonuses, commissions, and vacation pay all count toward the income limits, but pensions, annuities, investment earnings, interest, capital gains and government or military retirement benefits do not. To figure out how much your specific earnings will affect your benefits, see the Social Security Retirement Earnings Test Calculator at SSA.gov/OACT/ COLA/RTeffect.html.

It’s also important to know that if you do lose some or all of your Social Security benefits because of the earning limits, they aren’t lost forever. When you reach full retirement age, your benefits will be recalculated to a higher amount to make up for what was withheld.

Be Mindful of Taxes Too

In addition to the Social Security rules, you need to factor in Uncle Sam too. Because working increases your income, it might make your Social Security benefits taxable.

Here’s how it works. If the sum of your adjusted gross income, nontaxable interest, and half of your Social Security benefits is between $25,000 and $34,000 for individuals ($32,000 and $44,000 for couples), you have to pay tax on up to 50 percent of your benefits. Above $34,000 ($44,000 for couples), you could pay on up to 85 percent, which is the highest por-

tion of Social Security that is taxable. About a third of all people who get Social Security have to pay income taxes on their benefits.

In addition to the federal government, 12 states – Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and West Virginia – tax Social Security benefits to some extent too. If you live in one of these states, you’ll need to check with your state tax agency for details.
