Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those she touched, and her memory will serve as a guiding light for generations to come.

Rebecca Thornburg Cook

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Rebecca Cook, known affectionately by her friends and family as Becky, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2023 in her beloved hometown of Kings Mountain, NC.

Born on the 21st of July, 1940 to the late Floyd and Margaret Patterson Thornburg, she lived a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to her community.

Becky’s educational journey led her to Kings Business College, where she cultivated the skills that would later serve her in her many roles throughout her life. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, she was an integral part of the Cleveland County Board of Elections, later ascending to the role of Chair of Kings Mountain Elections where she served throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. Her commitment to her community was further exemplified through her part-time work at Kings Mountain High School Cafeteria in the 1970’s and she also worked for over 25 years with Hilda Moss Tax Service.

A woman of many talents, Becky was a gifted seamstress for more than 30 years, her hands rarely idle as she crafted clothing for herself, her family, and the wider public. Her creativity knew no bounds, as she also dabbled in wreath making, cake decorating, and crocheting, to name but a few of her many crafty pursuits.

Becky’s dedication to service was a defining force in her life, as she directed weddings, helped establish the Cleveland Vocational Industries, Inc. (CVII) workshop for the physically and mentally challenged, and served on various boards including CVII, Pathways, and Pathway Consumer Rights. As a hospice volunteer and a meal deliverer with Central United Methodist Church, she touched the lives of many with her generosity and courage.

A steadfast member of First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain since 1962, Becky served as a Sunday School teacher and was most recently involved in Golden Fellowship. Her faith was a guiding light in her life, and her unwavering devotion to her church community was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Becky was predeceased by her loving husband, Ken, and her cherished daughter, Terrie.

LEGION

From Page 1A your family means the world to you. They are the ones who support you behind closed doors.”

“What we learned during this nine-day event was that, out there, it isn’t just veterans who are suffering with thoughts of suicide… it is everybody.”

Pullen continued, “Suicide affects veterans and their families the hardest and events like this one gives veteran and their families the opportunity to talk to others, to talk with Mission 22, and other support groups.”

Pullen is quick to acknowledge that he didn’t do this event alone. The NC Ambassador of Mission 22, Kevin Evans, along with American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) members Amanda Smith and Kathy Hambright gave of their time and talents, along with countless members of America Legion Post 155 and ALA Unit 155, to shine the light on veteran suicide and the need to support veterans.

The event resulted after lengthy discussions on ways to make American Legion Post 155 more visible to veterans within the community and allow them to express their concern for the welfare of veterans in our community. To do this, they utilized Deal Street Walking Track for 22 hours a day for nine days. Those numbers are symbolic: 22 represents the number of veterans who die each day to suicide, and nine days represents the end a cycle.

“Evans noted, “At the walking track, the blessing was that the track was kept in motion 22 hours a day. Just to see the veterans who didn’t have the ability to walk come out and participate was amazing. If they couldn’t walk, they were pushed around the track, enabling them to also accept the mission and contribute. As a result, those veterans were able to fully participate.”

Other groups were invited to join with American Legion Post 155 in this effort: American Legion Post 82, Department of NC District 23, Mission 22, Wounded Warrior Project, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Combat Veterans, and Disabled American Veterans, among others.

During the event dubbed ‘Veterans Walk and Roll’, 817 individuals walked the track. Of those participating, 192 vets walked 1407 laps, and 625 civilians walked 2681 laps, for a total of 1551.6 miles. Veterans from across the nation participated within their own communities and reported laps that were included in those

Due to inclement weather, the planned motorcycle poker run had to be cancelled, so the legionnaires had to pivot. Through it all, they prevailed. “In spite of the bad weather throughout the week, the rain didn’t stop anyone from walking for 22 hours a day during the nine-day event,” Pullen said.

“Every year, Mission 22 organizes a walk nationwide

cated. I give him all the respect in the world.”

A highlight of the event was a visit by The Saluting Marine, Staff Sergeant Tim Chambers, who participated in the event. He is a motivational speaker, comrade, and supporter of this special event in Kings Mountain. And Pullen shared that Chambers enjoyed singing karaoke, as well.

“We learned a lot, and we still have a lot left to learn. American Legion Post 155 accepted the mission and helped the community understand

the need to support our veterans, because they served when asked. Now is the community’s time to support

“Just because the event is over, doesn’t mean the mis-

sion has ended. The mission is alive, and this mission will continue walk for our veterans.”

In the Bible there was a man named Eleazar, He was one of King David’s mighty men. 2 Samuel 23:10a (MSG) says, “But Eleazar stood his ground and killed Philistines right and left until he was exhausted - but he never let go of his sword….” We also have a sword that we must get a grip on

and never let go. Hebrews 6:17 (NIV) says, “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Use the Sword of the Spirit to put the devil in his place.

If you are believing in God for something, the devil will try to convince you to doubt God. However, as you get in agreement with God through meditating on the word, declaring the word and obeying, God will annihilate your enemies. For example, I began to have anxiety to the point of not sleeping at night. Negative and intimating thoughts would prevent me from resting. I had to fight back. I begin to declare scriptures before bed, and listen to praise and worship until I went to sleep. Finally, a breakthrough came, but it didn’t come overnight. I had to

persevere until the anxiety was completely gone. Jeremiah 23:29 (ESV) “Is not my word like fire, declares the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?” Use the Sword of the Spirit to cut away the junk in your heart. I had a supervisor that I didn’t really like. I never disrespected her, but I would always think how horrible her leadership was. One day she asked the staff to volunteer on a Saturday. I thought to myself, “I’m not doing that.” However, I heard the Lord say, “Yes you are.” The scriptures about humbling yourself, submitting to those who have rule over you, and praying for your leaders came to my mind. “Yes Lord,” I said. I went and began to connect with her. She shared her struggles as a new principal. I even prayed for her. We ended up becoming friends. Hebrew 4:12 (NLT) says, “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest

two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”

PRAY THIS PRAYER: Father, you are good. You are strong and mighty in battle. Help me to be strong and not to get easily discouraged by life’s circumstances. I want to stand in faith believing and trusting you no matter what. Remind me that the grass and flowers withers away, but your word stands forever. Forgive me for being disobedient to your word. Lord, I ask you to examine my heart and if you find anything that’s not pleasing to you, remove it. May I live for you and not my agenda. In Jesus’ name I pray – Amen.”

Bolt receives DAR Good Citizen Scholarship

Railey Madison Bolt, daughter of Jonathan and Katie Bolt, was selected as Col. Frederick Hambright

DAR Chapter’s Kings Mountain High School

DAR Good Citizen of the year. Railey read her essay to the members on June 3, just hours after graduating from Kings Mountain High School. In addition to the DAR Good Citizen pin, Railey also received a $500 scholarship from the chapter. The scholarship is funded through activities

like Wreaths Across America held annually by the DAR chapter.

The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess good citizenship qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an out-

standing degree.

Students participating in the essay contest were given a prompt and had two hours to complete their essays. The focus question for this year’s contest was “How will the essential actions of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism) meet the challenges that America faces in this decade?”

Railey will attend East Tennessee State University, where she plans to earn a degree in public health through the Global Citizens Honors College.

nounced that the Howser House will be open for visitors on Saturday, June 10. This 1803 stone house, located in a remote area of the park, is only open to the public once or twice a year so don’t miss out on this opportunity. The stone house was built by a Revolutionary War veteran and stonemason Henry Howser. Its thick, sturdy, stone walls conveyed prosperity and affluence at a time when most were living in log houses. The home remained in the family for several generations and was one of the more prosperous farms in the region.

Kings Mountain National Military Park and other volunteers will have the house and grounds open to the public. Visitors

are welcome to explore the house and appreciate Howser’s architectural talents. The Howser House is not handicap accessible and parking is limited. Visitors may reach the house from Rock House Road, off SC 216 (Battleground Road). Parking is available. Good walking shoes

are recommended. The event is free and open to the public from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 10. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled. For more information about this event call 864-936-7921.

Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute physician receives prestigious award

Dr. Declan Walsh, Hemby Family Endowed Chair in Supportive Oncology at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute, received the prestigious 2023 Walther Cancer Foundation Endowed Supportive Oncology Award during the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting June 2-6, in Chicago. This esteemed honor recognizes distinguished leaders who have made significant contributions to palliative and supportive oncology care.

As a strong advocate for supportive oncology, Walsh’s work has focused on improving the quality of life for cancer patients by managing treatment-related suffering. His pioneering efforts in integrating various supportive services, including palliative medicine, cancer rehabilitation and psycho-oncology into a single department, has markedly transformed cancer patient care.

“In our department, we recognize that every patient is an individual with unique needs and concerns,” said Walsh. “We’ve aimed to create an environment that offers comprehensive support, addressing everything from malnutrition to psychooncological needs. This recognition from the Wal-

ther Cancer Foundation highlights the significance of our mission, inspiring us to further innovate and enhance patient care.”

In 1987, Walsh launched the first palliative care program in the U.S. at the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center. There, he developed acute care and home care services to assist patients and their families with decision-making, complication management and symptom control.

His significant work in palliative care served as a springboard to address the more complex challenges faced by cancer patients. By 2017, with support from Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute, he created the first-ever department of supportive oncology that integrates services such as rehabilitation, nutrition, surgical oncology prehabilitation, and survivorship.

“Dr. Walsh’s visionary leadership and dedication to patients’ well-being has put Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute on the map as a paragon of integrated cancer care,” said Dr. Ruben A. Convicted felon charged for possessing weapons, drugs

Gaston Police Department officers charged 32-year-old Octavious White of Gastonia with possession of a firearm by felon and drug trafficking charges after White ran away from a traffic stop.

On May 26 just after 5:30 p.m., GPD officers responded to assist another law enforcement agency with a traffic stop on Milton Avenue after the driver ran away from the other agency’s officers.

GPD officers quickly located the driver, now identified as White, still around Milton Avenue. The driver was turned over to the other law enforcement agency and White was arrested for multiple traffic-related violations.

GPD officers who were at the original traffic stop location could see an ARstyle rifle leaning upright from the passenger floorboard area.

Fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. Your local markets carry a wide variety of nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables. However, harmful bacteria that may be in the soil or water where produce grows can contact fruits and vegetables and contaminate them. Fresh produce may also become contaminated after it is harvested, such as during storage or preparation. Eating contaminated produce can lead to foodborne illness, often called “food poisoning.” So, as you enjoy fresh produce, follow these safe handling tips to help protect you and your family.

• Bag fresh fruits and vegetables separately from raw meat, poultry, and seafood when packing them to take home from the market

Store Properly

• Refrigerate all produce that is purchased precut or packaged.

• Even if you do not plan to eat the skin, it is still important to wash produce first so dirt and bacteria are not transferred from the surface when peeling or cutting produce.

• Scrub firm produce, such as melons and cucumbers, with a clean produce brush.

• After washing, dry produce with a clean cloth towel or paper towel to further reduce bacteria that may be present on the surface

What About Pre-Washed Produce?

Many pre-cut, bagged, or packaged produce items are pre-washed and readyto-eat. If so, it will be stated on the packaging, and you can use the produce without further washing.

If you choose to wash produce marked as “prewashed” or “ready-to-eat,” be sure that it does not contact unclean surfaces or utensils. This will help to avoid cross contamination.

Mid-century modern architecture in CC sought out for new book

Historic Shelby Foundation has commissioned Daniel Pezzoni to do a second coffee table book on mid-century modern architecture in Cleveland County, including buildings and homes built between 1945 to 1975. His first book, Architectural Perspectives of Cleveland County North Carolina, was published in conjunction with Brian R. Eades in 2004.

According to architectural Digest, “Midcentury-modern architecture is a style created by architects in the middle decades of the 20th century. Influenced by the optimism of the postWorld War II boom and by the exploration of a range of materials, including steel, concrete, and

The defining characteristics and elements of midcentury-modern architecture are:

• Clean lines

• Floor-to-ceiling windows

• Open floor plans

• Wood

• Indoor-outdoor living

• Built-ins

• Functionality A good example of mid-century modern style in Kings Mountain includes the home at 802 Woodside Drive. The architecture usually includes patios that complement the nature around it, welcoming that calm beauty into the home with floor to ceiling windows.

Homes built between WWII and 1970 can be overlooked for their historical significance be-

cause earlier homes are being sought out for preservation. This era of architecture represents the optimism of a generation after the end of the war that embraced minimalism and continued into the space age and Kings Mountain has many examples throughout the community in

both residential and commercial buildings.

Dan Pezzoni is visiting Cleveland County in the next few weeks. If you have a home or business that you would like considered for his book, contact Loretta Cozart at the Herald at loretta@kmherald.com.

Operation Fan Heat Relief distributing fans to eligible recipients through October 31

As temperatures begin rising, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Aging and Adult Services is partnering with the N.C. Area Agencies on Aging and local service providers to dis-

tribute fans to eligible recipients through Operation Fan Heat Relief May 1–Oct. 31to help older adults at risk stay safe this summer. People 60 and older, as well as adults with disabilities, are

eligible to sign up for assistance

May 1–Oct. 31 at local aging agencies across the state. Since 1986, the relief program has purchased fans for older adults and adults with disabilities, providing them with a more comfortable

living environment and reducing heat-related illnesses.

The program is made possible by donations from Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, Dominion and Valassis and allows regional Area Agencies on Aging and local provider agencies to purchase fans for eligible individuals. Local provider agencies can also purchase a limited number of air conditioners based on a person’s specific health conditions.

Last year, the NCDHHS Division of Aging and Adult Services received $85,1374 in donations, allowing for the distribution of 3,793 fans and 23 air conditioners.

As individuals age and develop chronic medical conditions, they are less likely to sense and respond to changes in temperature, and they may also be taking medications that can worsen the impact of extreme heat. Operation Fan Heat Relief helps vulnerable adults at risk for heat-related illnesses stay safe during the summer.

In addition to applying for fans, people the age 60 and older, as well as adults with disabilities, can take the following steps during high temperatures:

Increase fluid intake

Spend time in cool or air-conditioned environments regularly

Reduce strenuous activity during the afternoon

Speak with their physician before summer about how to stay safe while taking medication that can affect the body's ability to cool itself (e.g., high blood pressure medications)

For more details, individuals may contact their area agency on aging or the Division of Aging and Adult Services at 919-8553400.

Can I Collect Social Security from My Ex-Spouse?

Dear Savvy Senior,

Is it possible to collect Social Security benefits from my ex-spouse? We were married for 12 years but have been divorced for almost 20 years now.

Never Remarried

Dear Never, Yes, depending on your specific circumstances, you may very well be eligible for divorced spouses Social Security benefits. Here’s what you should know.

Who’s Eligible?

A divorced spouse can collect a Social Security retirement benefit on the earnings record of their ex-husband (or exwife) if you are at least age 62, were married for at least 10 years, are unmarried, and are not eligible for a higher benefit based on your own earnings record.

In order to collect, your former spouse must also be at least 62 and eligible for Social Security benefits. But he doesn’t have to be receiving them in order for you to collect divorced spouse’s benefits, as long as you’ve been divorced for at least two years.

Even if your ex is remarried, it won’t af-

fect your right to divorcee benefits, nor will it affect your ex’s retirement benefits or his current spouse’s benefits.

Benefit Amount

A divorced spouse can receive up to 50 percent of their ex’s full Social Security benefit, or less if they take benefits before their full retirement age, which is 66 for people born in 1945-1954 but is gradually increased to age 67 for people born in 1960 or later. To find out your full retirement age and see how much your benefits will be reduced by taking them early see SSA.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/agereduction.html.

Keep in mind though, that if you qualify for benefits based on your own work history, you’ll receive the larger of the two benefits. You cannot receive benefits on both your record, and your ex’s work record too.

To find out how much your retirement benefits will be, see your Social Security statement at SSA.gov/myaccount. And to get an estimate of your ex’s benefits, call Social Security at 800-772-1213. You’ll need to show your marriage certificate and divorce decree to prove your

marriage lasted at least 10 years along with his Social Security number to get it.

Other Factors to Know

You also need to be aware that working can affect your divorced spouse’s benefits. If you start taking benefits while working, and are under full retirement age, your benefits will be reduced $1 for every $2 you earn above the annual limit, which is $21,240 in 2023. In the year you reach full retirement age, however, the annual limit increases to $56,520 and the reduction lowers to $1 for every $3 above that limit. See SSA.gov/pubs/EN05-10069.pdf for more details.

Another factor that can reduce your divorced spouse’s benefits is receiving a pension from an employer that did not withhold Social Security taxes (like a government). This is a rule know as Government Pension Offset (see SSA. gov/benefits/retirement/planner/gpocalc.html) which can reduce your benefits by two-thirds of the amount of your pension.

Divorced Survivor’s Benefits

You also need to know that when your ex-spouse dies (and if you were married

for 10 or more years), you become eligible for divorced survivor benefits, which is worth up to 100 percent of what your ex-spouse was due.

Survivor benefits are available to divorced spouses as early as age 60 (50 if you’re disabled). But if you remarry before 60, you become ineligible unless the marriage ends. Remarrying after age 60 will not affect your eligibility.

Also note that if you are receiving divorced spouses benefits when your exspouse dies, you will automatically be switched over to the higher paying survivor benefit.

For more information visit SSA.gov/ benefits/retirement/planner/applying7. html and click on “Benefits for Your Divorced Spouse.”
