KM Historical Museum holds successful 16th Raffle and Auction Kings Mountain Historical Museum’s 16th Annual Raffle and Auction took place on Saturday, September 7th at the H. Lawrence Patrick Senior Life and Conference Center. The Museum board members and staff are proud of the success of the event and appreciate the support of the Kings Mountain community. The event theme was based on the museum’s current exhibit, Books: Stories That Shape Us, focusing specifically on books and authors that highlight the region. The atmosphere was creative and imaginative with guests dressed as their favorite book characters. The proceeds from this annual event go to support the funding needed for the museum to provide educational exhibits, events, and outreach programs free of charge to the public. “The Museum owes special thanks to our event sponsors and in-kind donors for their generous contributions, and for the people who purchased tickets and auction items,” said Museum Di-

The grand prize of $10,000 went to Steve Moffitt, of Cherryville. Moffitt is a retired teacher who taught in Kings Mountain. “The Kings Mountain Historical Museum looks forward to continuing to provide a home for the artifacts of Kings Mountain and interpreting our local history,” Costa said.

Spicer honored as CDC of the Year By Loretta Cozart Robin Spicer, Kings Mountain High School Career Development Coordinator (CDC) and member of the KMHS staff for 22 years, was recognized in July as the Career Development Coordinator of the Year for North Carolina during the Career and Technical Education State Conference in Greensboro. Mrs. Spicer is a member of the North Carolina Association for Career and Technical Education (NCACTE) who sponsored the award.

Touchdown Club needs $600,000 to fund project The Kings Mountain Touchdown is reaching out to businesses and individuals in the community to help raise $600,000 to complete the funding drive for the new football turf/ tennis facilities projects at Kings Mountain High School. The football project is near completion and the Mountaineers are already playing their home games there. The tennis facility should be completed by December and include six

City’s Send-A-Kid to College program starts By Loretta Cozart At the April 30 Kings Mountain City Council meeting, the new Send-AKid to College scholarship was presented by Scott Neisler and unanimously approved by Councilmembers. Last week, Mayor Neisler announced the program had begun. “A few months ago, we approved a campaign to help our Kings Mountain utility customer dependents, graduating from Kings Mountain High School, attend college. This is a safety net that will fill the gap financially so it will enable a student to attend Cleveland Community College. Utility users will receive a notice in your utility bill and a rack card with all the information on the program. To participate, tear off the bottom of the card, decide what you can donate each month and automatically each month it will show up on your utility bill. You can give as little as $1 a month. “You might ask, how does $1 or $12 a year help fund a scholarship for a student? Well Kings Mountain has 6,000 customers. You can do the math,” the mayor said. “Education is the key to success of our kids. A donation to the fund is a donation towards a bright future of our community. “When you sign up, post a selfie of you supporting Kings Mountain’s future! I am proud to be the first. If you have any questions, please call me at city hall or message me. I love talking about this campaign,” he said. The scholarship is funded by the citizens and industries of Kings Mountain through donations made

A monthly donation of as little as a dollar, or another amount of the donors choosing, can be added to the monthly utility payment. Collected funds will be paid directly to the Cleveland County College Foundation or another community college, if the student’s course of study not offered at CCC. Criteria of eligibility for the scholarship include: • Scholarship to provide community based “last stop” funding – This would be funds available after all financial aid awards such as FASFA, Pell Grant, work study have been exhausted to complete community college financial obligation. • Scholarship can be used for degree or technical certificate program at Cleveland Community College or any other community college in North Carolina

Eoline Hord KINGS MOUNTAIN – Eoline Hord, 96, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on September 11, 2019 at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain, NC. Mrs. Hord was born December 7, 1922, in Grover, NC to Byron and Mary Alston Keeter. She was raised in Kings Mountain, NC, where she lived most of her life. Mrs. Hord graduated from Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC, and Furman University in Greenville, SC. She was a teacher in Concord, NC, and also in Kings Mountain. On August 9, 1946, Eoline Keeter married Dr. David Fletcher Hord, Jr. They lived in San Antonio, Texas and in Columbia, SC, while Dr. Hord served in the United States Army. Mrs. Hord was a member of Kings Mountain Baptist Church. She was a choir member for many years. Mrs. Hord was also a Sunday School teacher, youth group leader, circle member, Vacation Bible School teacher, and children’s choir leader. She took many groups to Camp Caswell for music camp in the summers, along with her dear friend, Edie Bridges. Mrs. Hord also taught Sunday School at Kings Mountain Hospital. Mrs. Hord was a member of several organizations, including the Magnolia Garden Club, the Home Arts Club, and PEO. She was a volunteer at Kings Mountain Hospital for many years, and was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year in 2012. Mrs. Hord served as a hospital trustee for many years as well. Mrs. Hord was preceded in death by her parents; her husband David Fletcher Hord, Jr. and her sister Kathryn Jo Keeter Madison. She is survived by five children: Mary Jo Whitley (Stan) of Winston-Salem, Barbara Fulton (Corky) of Kings Mountain, David Hord (Bonnie) of Salisbury, Nancy Bunch (Ed) of Asheboro, and Anne Gamble (Johnny) of Kings Mountain, She is survived by 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hord is also survived by her brother-in-law, Randolph Madison, of Petersburg, VA. A Memorial Service was held Saturday, September, 14, 2019, at 2:00 PM at Kings Mountain Baptist Church with Pastor Tim Whitesides officiating. Visitation was held Friday, September 13, 2019, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Harris Funeral Home Interment was held in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, NC MEMORIALS: Kings Mountain Baptist Church, PO Box 608, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

Mauney Memorial Library October activity line-up Mauney Memorial Library has a great line up of activities for the month of October. Celebrate National Taco Day with Mauney Memorial Library and Mamacita’s Food Truck! Teal bows for Regina Ruff Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month By Loretta Cozart On August 27, City Council proclaimed September 2019 as Regina Ruff Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month to increase public awareness of ovarian cancer. In honor of this resolution, the Main Street Department adorned the lamp posts on the bridge at King Street and Battleground Avenue with teal bows. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. We would like to recognize and remember those who have suffered from ovarian cancer and remind you to encourage the women in your life to be aware of the symptoms and to seek preventative care. The lack of an early detection tests means that approximately 80 percent of cases of ovarian cancer are detected at an advanced stage. All women are at risk for ovarian cancer and approximately 15 percent of women diagnosed have a family history placing them at even higher risk. This deadly disease can be detected early with annual exams. As you drive across the bridge this month, remember loved ones who have been lost to this disease and pledge to remind

Three new police officers sworn in to KMPD By Loretta Cozart Three new police officers were sworn with the Kings Mountain Police Department on Thursday, September 12 at city hall. Mayor Scott Neisler conducted the swearing-in ceremony as families of the new officers, city staff, and several city council members looked on. After the official oath, Chief Proctor gave the new officers the Charge of Office. Taking the oath were Doug Shockley, Lee Putnam and Lee Whittington.

To be sure, all of us will have bad days and situations we do not wish. Maria might sing to us, “When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad. I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don’t feel so bad.” You and I will face our dog bites and bee stings in life. Even so, we must remember to not dwell on the negative, but look to God and thank him for the overflow of blessings in our life. So this week, reflect on Paul’s words in Philippians and your favorite things.

Anne Harkness exhibit at SASi DAR celebrates Constitution Week Currently on view at Southern Arts Society in Kings Mountain is “Wonder,” an exhibition of paintings by Anne Harkness. The exhibit continues through September 27. “Wonder” features works covering many of Anne Harkness’ evolving series of paintings - Hometown America, Diptychs, Figure, Man vs. Nature, Small Works, and Nature. Harkness’ oil paintings flow effortlessly from images fractured into graphic shards of rich color to works with quiet strokes that evoke a calmer atmosphere. Recent paintings like Farm Story and Up to The Mountains (both from her Diptychs series) have an area painted in shades of gray that shifts to full color, like an old photograph or memory suddenly becoming clearer. The Hometown series features corners and crossroads of real places, sights that are familiar to all of us no matter the location. Paintings in her Man Vs. Nature series depict power poles thrusting skyward, shattering sky and clouds into a kaleidoscope of color, somehow softening their intrusion. Harkness had once believed the man-made structures to be unsightly, unfortunate, unsavory and a shame to have ruined such a beautiful natural surrounding with such a sight. But now she is thrilled at the graphic structures “loving their relationship or should I say', the dance between them and the nature that surrounds them”. Working from her love of subject matter with a strong design element, Harkness focuses on the importance of line and shape in her work as a means of giving her compositions a strong foundation to reveal the many layers within each piece. Anne credits her emphasis on these components to her love of drawing and a desire to retain the looser marks that give a piece a more rustic, unfinished quality. A native of NC, Anne

Her work as an art director in NYC for 15 years has embodied her work with a graphic element that astute viewers can detect in her paintings. As a contemporary artist, Anne seeks to capture a distinct point of view, often finding unexpected beauty in locations or views others would easily dismiss as ordinary, or too unattractive to be considered as the subject matter for artistic compositions. Nature Heritage Festival this Saturday By Leah Taber, Park Ranger The 2019 Nature and Heritage Festival is this Saturday, September 21, from 10 am to 10 pm at Kings Mountain National Military Park. The main festival activities will take place from 10 am until 4 pm in the area around the Visitor Center. Festival activities include an 18th-century militia muster, featuring the Backcountry Militia, weapons demonstrations, trades and crafts demonstrations, colonial cooking demonstrations, and an encampment area. On the front lawn of the Visitors Center is a Make Your Own Crafts area featuring nature-themed crafts and hands-on activities. REI, the Carolina Orienteering Klubb, the Catawba Master Naturalists, the South Carolina Native Plant Society, and the
Anne Spring Close Greenway sponsors an outdoor skills area that introduces visitors to survival skills, map reading and compass skills, and features guided nature walks with plant and animal identification. A wildlife viewing area and wildlife programs on the front lawn feature the Carolina Raptor Center bird exhibit, from 10 am to 12 noon, and the South Carolina Herpetological Society with reptiles and amphibians. History talks occur throughout the day and a vendor area on the front lawn highlights area attractions and opportunities nearby to enjoy the outdoors. Later in the evening, from 8 pm until 10 pm, the park hosts Nocturnal Notions in Your National Park: night sky crafts and activities and night sky viewing with the Carolina Skygazers on the front lawn.

The Col. Frederick Hambright DAR Chapter has its meeting on Tuesday, September 24 at 5:30 pm. David McDonald, history teacher at Kings Mountain Middle School, will speak about the Constitution. McDonald was recently deployed with the NC National Guard doing work with hurricane relief at the coast but should be home in time to speak to the group. DAR initiated the observance of Constitution Week in 1955, when the service organization petitioned the U.S. Congress to dedicate September 17–23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week. The celebration’s goals are threefold: to encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787; to remind the public that the Constitution is the basis of

By fostering knowledge of, and appreciation for, the Constitution and the inalienable rights it affords to all Americans, DAR helps to keep alive the memory of the men and women who secured our nation’s foundational liberties. Pumpkin Recipes PUMPKIN PANCAKES 1 cup oats 1 cup cottage cheese 3/4 cup egg whites 1/2 cup pumpkin puree 1/4 cup skim milk 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon honey 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon cooking spray • Mix oats, cottage cheese, egg whites, pumpkin puree, milk, pumpkin pie spice, honey, and cinnamon in blender until batter is smooth; pour into a bowl. • Heat a pan or skillet over medium heat; spray with cooking spray. Scoop batter, about 1/4 cup per pancake, into the hot pan; cook until bubbles form and the edges are dry, about 2 minutes. Flip pancakes and cook until browned on the other side, 1 to 2 minutes. Repeat with remaining batter. Add butter and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until deep brown bits form on the bottom of the pan. Remove from heat and stir in cream, pumpkin, vanilla, salt, and spice. • Heat milk until steaming, then add coffee and pumpkin caramel mixture, and stir to combine. • Top with whipped cream and sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice. EASY PUMPKIN CAKE 1 (18.25 ounce) package spice cake mix 1 (15 oz.) can pumpkin •Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Generously grease a 9x13 inch baking pan. • In a large bowl, mix together the spice cake mix and canned pumpkin until well blended. Spread evenly into the prepared pan. • Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool and serve, or store in the refrigerator. This tastes even better the next day.

Reigning state champ Shelby comes to KMHS Friday night The reigning state 2A champion Shelby Golden Lions bring their explosive offense and hard-hitting defense to John Gamble Stadium Friday night to continue the second oldest rivalry in North Carolina prep football. “They’re a state championship contender again,” says Mountaineer coach Greg Lloyd. “No doubt about it.” Shelby has averaged over 50 points a game including last week when they demolished another county rival, their nearest
neighbor Crest. “Like always, they’re very strong,” Lloyd said. “They won the state championship last year and this is probably one of their better teams. “They have lots of speed,” he added. “They’re very aggressive and they’re impressive in all three phases of the game.” The Lions have one of the best quarterbacks in the state in senior Isaiah Bess, who passed for over 4,000 yards last year. “He is phenomenal,” Lloyd said. “He’s 6-6 and
has a very strong arm. He can hurt you inside and out. He is a very elusive runner and can throw on the run. And, he has a lot of guys that can catch it. “Their offense is as good as you’ll see. Their defense is very strong. It’s going to be hard to move the ball on them.” Kings Mountain hasn’t had any trouble moving the ball against its first four opponents, but gaining yards against the Lions will probably be much more difficult. But, as the old saying goes “the reason you play
is to see who’s going to win.” The two teams have played every season since 1923 except for 1943 when the game was cancelled because of World War II. This year’s battle could rival some of those great ones from the past as both teams are undefeated and highly ranked in the 2A (Shelby) and 3A (KM) polls. Gamble Stadium should be packed.

Mountaineers ground West Meck Hawks 35-7 Kings Mountain got a good all-around effort from its offense, defense and special teams to hand previously unbeaten West Mecklenburg a 35-7 loss Friday in Charlotte. The Mountaineers topped the 400-yard mark in total offense for the fourth week in a row with 202 yards on the ground and 213 through the air, including three touchdown receptions by senior wide receiver Quintin Davidson and two touchdowns (one on the ground and one pass reception) by sophomore running back Rashaard Brooks. “We came out and played really well,” Coach Greg Lloyd said. “I felt they were a really strong team and it feels good to beat a team like that. “Our offensive line did a good job. They stayed on their blocks really well. Quintin Davidson made some big plays and Ethan Reid showed improvement at quarterback. They had two men
on Kobe Paysour all night but Rashaard had a good night running the ball.” Brooks finished with 131 yards rushing and Reid and Paysour combined for 11 of 17 completions with Paysour lining up in the Wildcat and throwing left-handed pass to Davidson for a 20-yard TD in the fourth quarter. Although the Hawks had the most productive offense of any KM opponent thus far with 283 total yards, they were only able to complete 10 of 31 passes due largely to a heavy rush by the KM D-line and linebackers; and their running game was basically the result of a steady performance from Willie Hopper Jr., who finished with 64 yards in 26 carries but had just one total yard in seven totes in the second half. “The defense hunkered down and stopped them several times,” Lloyd said. “We had a big stop at the goal line and

4-0 and overall mark to 8-3. The Harris twins had a big night for the Lady Mountaineers. Layla had 18 service points and Abbie contributed 14 service points and five kills. Paige Bagwell had seven service points, 26

The Hawks had other potential scoring drives, one ending on a 27-yard field goal attempt that was blocked by the Mountaineer D late in the first half and the other a 43-yard reception by Brown who was caught from behind by Paysour at the KM three. On the next play the Hawks fumbled the ball into the end zone for a touchback. James Ussery partially blocked a punt on the game’s opening possession, giving KM the ball at the West Meck 35. It took KM just five plays to score with Reid hitting Brooks on a quick screen and the talented sophomore running back taking it 11 yards into the left side of the end zone for the touchdown. Austin Browning’s first of five straight extra points gave KM a 7-0 lead. The Hawks drove the ensuing kickoff 68 yards in just five plays to tie the score.
Kings Mountain drove 60 yards for a touchdown on the game’s opening possession and went on to defeat West Lincoln 27-8 in a Tri-Conference Middle School East Division game Wednesday afternoon at Shu Carlton Stadium. A packed crowd watched the Patriots win their first division game after falling 14-12 in a non-division game at Crest last week. Running back Micah Ward scored from five yards out and Max Thompson kicked the extra point to give
the Patriots a 7-0 lead they would not relinquish. After a Chiefs’ punt, the Patriots went up 14-0 on a 19 yard run by Robert Kendrick and another PAT from Thompson. Kendrick went 35 yards up the gut with 3:38 left in the third period, and Thompson converted again, to put KM up 21-0. On West Lincoln’s next possession, big lineman Shamyr Moss picked up a fumble and went 25 yards into the end zone but the TD was called back on a block in the back penalty. The ball
was placed on the WL 21 and quarterback Bryson Brown went around the left side for a 27-0 lead. West Lincoln broke a 55yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Kendrick finished with 130 yards to lead the Patriot offense. Rodney Unnasch, Robert Kendrick and Alex Jones led the defensive effort. Kings Mountain has a big division game at Burns this afternoon. Fifth quarter action begins at 4:30 and the varsity game begins at 5 p.m.

A 21-yard reception by Paysour and a 26-yard run by Brooks took the ball to the West two, from which point Brooks scored for a 14-7 lead that would end up the game winner. The Quintin Davidson highlight reel began after that as he scored on a 51-yard catch and run to give the Mountaineers a 21-7 lead. About 10 yards down the KM sideline Davidson turned on the after-burners, left his defender in the dust and
was about 20 yards ahead when he hauled in the pass from Reid. Late in the half Belton Pressley intercepted a West pass at the Hawks’ 39, and on the first play Reid hit Davidson on a screen and he took it 39 yards for a 28-7 halftime lead. Kings Mountain wrapped up the scoring with 9:48 remaining on Paysour’s TD pass to Davidson which capped a 35 yard drive following a 21yard West Meck punt. “In the second half our offense struggled some, but all in all I was very pleased,” Lloyd said. “We had some bumps and bruises but we came out pretty healthy.”

JVs whip West Meck 25-6, travel to Shelby Thursday Kings Mountain’s JV football team saw its first action on the new Gamble Stadium turf Thursday night and posted a 25-6 victory over 4A West Mecklenburg to run its record to 3-0 heading into a county rivalry game Thursday night at Shelby. Defensive back Jake Lloyd got the rout going when he intercepted a pass and returned it 70 yards for a 6-0 lead late in the first period. After the kickoff, the Mountaineers held the Hawks to three and out and covered 58 yards in just three plays for a 12-0 lead. Caleb Holland covered the final four yards on a run around left end after Lloyd set it up on a 32-yard catch and run. The Mountaineers drove 54 yards in eight plays to score on an 18-yard reception by Kameron Lipscomb. The 18-0 lead stood until halftime. Peyton Fisher intercepted a pass at the West seven late in the third quarter to set up a one-yard touchdown run by Chase Ellis. Aidan Harris’s PAT gave the Mountaineers a 25-0 lead going into the fourth period. The Hawks scored their only touchdown with 7:41 remaining when Omari Richardson scooped up a KM fumble and took it 12 yards for a TD. North School new seating area with sunshade.
North Elementary receives Lowe’s Toolbox grant for $5000 North Elementary School received a Lowe’s Toolbox For Education grant for $5000.00 in January. This grant provided the school with funds for a new seating area with a sunshade on their playground. Playground Safety Services of Shelby helped with the purchasing and installation of the equipment. In addition to the grant North PTO helped fund the
remaining balance needed to finish the project. North School was able to provide a nice shade, but also a concreted area with three new backless benches. With the recent heat and high temperatures, the shade has come
in quite handy. Staff, as well as students, have enjoyed the shade. The location of the shade has also made the supervision of the playground and field more feasible. Everyone at North Elemenatary is truly grateful to Lowes, Playground Safety Services of Shelby, North PTO and all who helped with this project.

Bessemer City held its “We Will Remember service,” on September 11th at 8:30 am. Mayor Pro Tem Joe Will read a selection and recognized local servicemen and public servants. Mayor Pro Tem Joe Will thanked the local police and public workers who make our city a safe place
to live. Led by Debby Ray and Nellie Floyd the city sang “God Bless America.” At the end of the ceremony, officers lowered the colors in honor of those who died on 9/11 while Councilmember Alfred Carpenter performed Taps. 2019 marks the 18th anniversary of the tragedy of
9/11. More than 3,000 innocent men, women, and children lost their lives on September 11th 2001, when four airliners were used as weapons of mass destruction. As Americans we must always remember this day and remember the sacrifices of those who fight for our freedoms.
