Michelle Mack named Clev. Co. Schools 2023 Teacher of the Year
Meet North Elementary School Kindergarten teacher Michelle Mack, CCS Teacher of the Year 2023. She has been working for Cleveland County Schools since 1995. Michelle received her Child Development and Family Relations degree from UNC-Greensboro and her teaching certificate from Belmont Abbey College.
Since then, she has taught Kindergarten at North Elementary School for many years! Michelle
later went on to earn her master’s degree from Appalachian State University along with her National Board certification.

Midpines Convenience Center Temporary Site
Starting October 2, 2023, Cleveland County Government will open a temporary site at the Midpines Convenience Center at 615 Margrace Road in Kings Mountain. Only household garbage will be permitted, and no trailers will be allowed at this location.
“The Midpines location is one of our busiest convenience sites,” said Josh Davis, Solid Waste Director. “Both staff and the County Commissioners heard concerns of those in the nearby community and believed a temporary site would be important while long-term options are considered.”
Savannah Ross named EC Educator of Excellence

Six bear sightings in KM last week

A marked increase in bear sightings occurred in Kings Mountain last week.
A black bear sighting occurred on the Gateway Trail Sunday afternoon around 3:15 p.m., but it was not an isolated event.
“Most folks are reporting a teenage bear out foraging last week. While we can’t be sure this is the same bear, we know a mother bear and several babies were seen foraging last year. It is likely those cubs are teenagers now and are out on their own,” Shirley Brutko shared.

She was an avid reader and studied her Bible daily. Jane was a well known political activist in Kings Mountain and believed government should be held accountable to the people. She enjoyed learning and living the history of Kings Mountain and enjoyed sharing that history with others. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children: Pamela Martin Goforth (Blake), Shelby, NC,

Joe was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and spent his life fulfilling his passion as a farmer. He enjoyed raising fox dogs and fox hunting. Joe was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who took pride in his family. His determination, work ethic, guidance, and love will never be forgotten by all those who knew Joe.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Margaret Louise Horn, 101, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on September 21, 2023 at her home.
She was born in Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late Wright and Ella Dover Huffstetler and was preceded in death by her husband of 24 years, Holland Arnold Horn Sr. Margaret was also preceded in death by her brothers, Kermit, Lucio, Howard, Ernest (Buck), Jacob, Bobby, and William Huffstetler, her sisters, Corrie Weaver, and Juanita Hill, a son, Holland Arnold (Arnie) Horn Jr. and a grandson, Randy Dale Horn. She was a longtime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and worked as a dietitian most of her life. Margaret enjoyed her time working in food service at Kings Mountain District Schools, Hudson Hosiery and Kings Mountain Hospital. She also worked at Kings Mountain Convalescent Center and at Belk Department Store as a seamstress.
Margaret was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family. She enjoyed growing beautiful flowers, sewing, and keeping a tidy home. Margaret possessed a sharp wit and a wonderful sense of humor. She was a remarkable homemaker, loving mother and gracious grandmother to her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and

Fonda Gayle Bridges Fortenberry, age 80 of Sophia, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2023 at her home. A native of Cleveland County, NC, Fonda was born April 13, 1943 to the late John Alvah and Alice Fonville Bridges.
Fonda received her formal education at Blacksburg Schools in Blacksburg, SC and accepted Christ at an early age at the First Baptist

Wiley is survived by his younger sister Freida Hawkins. On October 19, 1947, Wiley married his beloved wife Sue and they were the parents of three children. Linda (David) Scism, Jean (Pete) Moore and Joe (Bridget) Allen. He was blessed with eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A brick mason/contractor by trade, Wiley went on to teach at Shelby High School and retired after 30 years of service. He also started Allen Ornamental Iron Shop of Kings Mountain.

Guided Hike allows participants to experience the lead-up to the battle of Kings Mountain on foot, in the woods, as they approach the historic battlefield. This will be a special 2.3 mile hike and is limited to 10 participants and reservations are required. Hikers will traverse rough and steep terrain, mostly uphill on unpaved trails. The hike is expected to take two hours or less.
Reserved participants will meet at the offsite parking at Kings Mountain State Park,
follow signs, at 08:30 a.m., and be transported via shuttle to the start point. The hike will end at the Kings Mountain National Military Park Visitor Center. Participants are welcome to attend the other functions at the park once the hike is complete. Shuttle service back to the parking area will be provided. Participants are expected to be self-supporting on the trail for two hours and follow all
‘Leave No Trace’ guidelines. There are no developed stops or services available or provided. Just as it was back then.
Guest Speaker Dr. Eddie Lee is a 39-year veteran of the university classroom. He is the former president of the South Carolina Historical Association. Dr. Lee chairs the Review Board for the National Register of Historic Places, ‘’ The topic of his speech is: ’Kings Mountain and Camden: Remembering the Dead.

The 1.5-mile self-guiding walking trail allows visitors to see both battlefield perspectives. It starts by winding below the northern slope of the ridge, where a portion of the Patriot forces assaulted the ridge top. The trail then turns back and runs along the ridge where the Loyalists’ forces surrendered. Wayside exhibits around the trail highlight battle events. The Centennial Monument, U.S. Monument, and Ferguson’s Grave are key features along the trail. The trail is for foot travel only, except for motorized wheelchairs. Although the trail is paved, it is steep in places. Benches are located along the trail.

Voters can now get Free photo ID cards from County Boards of Elections
Registered voters who do not have an acceptable identification card for voting in North Carolina can now go to their county board of elections office to get a free ID.
Most voters have a North Carolina driver’s license, an acceptable form of photo ID for voting. Those voters do not need to obtain a separate ID from their county board. Other common forms of acceptable ID include military or veterans ID cards issued by the federal government and college student and public employer ID cards that the State Board approved for use in voting. For a full list of acceptable forms of photo ID for voting, see the State Board’s website at Voter ID.
Registered voters who do not have an acceptable form of identification for voting purposes can now get a free photo ID from their county board of elections office. No special documents are needed. Voters will simply provide their name, date of birth, and the last four digits of their Social Security number, and have their photo
taken.
In most counties, voters can get an ID printed and given to them on the spot. A few counties may need to get the required information from the voter, take their photo, then mail the ID card to the voter or inform the voter that the ID card is ready to be picked up, whichever the voter prefers. Voters with questions about the ID process should contact their county board of elections.
A free voter photo ID will include the voter’s photo, name, and registration number. They will expire 10 years from the date of issuance. The county boards of elections can issue cards at any time during regular business hours, except for the pe-

KM Farmers’ Market ended September 16

Kings Mountain Farmers’ Market ended its season on Saturday, Sept. 16. The downtown market ran from early June through mid-September, offering various fruits, vegetables, meats, flowers, sauces, art, coffee, fun, fellowship, and music for citizens to enjoy.
Participants and organizers enjoyed a hearty breakfast of pancakes, sausage, and plenty of coffee to start their morning on a gorgeous and crisp Saturday morning, bright and early at 7:30 a.m.
Event organizer Tamra Moody of The Davidson Association said, “First and foremost, the market has exceeded our expectations, but with any start-up, we have had our share of challenges by trying to get others to buy into our vision.
“I am constantly reminded by board members from the Foothills Farmer’ Market in Shelby that building up a good market takes time and a lot of hard work. I believe every sccessful city has a farmers’ market. It’s an investment and often considered a benchmark in the community. The biggest challenges that we have had this year were funding, vendors, and a lack of consistent foot traffic every week.
“During the off-season,
the Kings Mountain Farmers Market Committee plans to work closely with the City of KM to improve the quality of the market. We will be reaching out to store owners - for corporate sponsorship. We are working closely with our vendors to ensure that they plant enough produce early for next year’s market,”

Farmers' Markets have so many direct benefits for the local community. They build the local economy, improve access to

Despite the challenges faced during this year’s Farmers’ Market, citizens supported it throughout the summer, buying fresh produce and learning about various fruits and vegetables not often found at large chain outlets. NC finally approves state budget

On Friday. the NC House of Representatives approved the 2023 Appropriations Act in a bipartisan vote of 70-40. Yet no Democrat voted for it, and Governor Cooper let the bill become law without his signature.
NC House Speaker Tim Moore said, “I could not be prouder of the budget approved by the House today, and I am encouraged by the bipartisan support it received from my friends on the other side of the aisle. Thanks to the fiscally responsible work of this General Assembly on behalf of the people of North Carolina, we have made significant investments where they are needed most."
He continued, “The record investments we have made in water and sewer infrastructure, mental health, workforce development, transportation, community colleges, education, and will have lasting impact on North Carolina
families that will be felt statewide. I look forward to Senate approval and the Governor’s signature on the 2023 Appropriations Act so it can be enacted as soon as possible.”

Let’s all work together to make great decisions for the citizens of Kings Mountain and for the future of our very special area of North Carolina. Here are my thoughts on the future development near the Casino and south of Interstate I-85.
Working as head of the Chamber of Commerce for 16 years, I had many phone calls about where our gated housing development with a pool and community building with nice homes was located. Unfortunately, I had to say we don’t have that in Kings Mountain. With all the beautiful land near the parks, that would be the perfect place to put such a development.
I live in the Country Club area, and a home sold behind me a couple of years ago for $950,000. There is a need for very fine homes here. We need folks who would purchase homes like that to live, shop, and contribute to our community…We don’t need to be a dumping ground for warehouses or more affordable housing. There are plenty of places along I-85 all the way to South Carolina and beyond for these big box buildings as big as football fields. Also, we need to consider what will be seen from Shepherd’s Mountain and Crowder’s Mountain…will we see the tops of plain football fields of roofs? Where is the beautiful landscape full of nature and rolling hillsides, creeks, etc. going?
Shouldn’t this land be used for parks, housing, trails, etc., and making Kings Mountain a wonderful place to live and grow? We already have data centers that have taken up acres of beautiful land.
Also, a development at the bottom of the dam at Davidson Lake would be in a flood plain, not environmentally safe for development. The government of Kings Mountain works for its people, not for large land-use develop-
ers who don’t live in Kings Mountain and who don’t know what the majority of folks who live here want for their community.
Kings Mountain’s Eagles Gate Community, which is gated, is extremely popular, and homes are purchased as soon as one goes up for sale…this is what we need more of here, as well as more upscale developments. The Planning & Zoning Department needs to hear from the citizens and leaders of Kings Mountain!!!
If I can help with this, I’d be more than glad to participate.
Time & energy need to be put into getting businesses in the buildings downtown, beautiful signage at all entrances, development of our downtown streets and sidewalks, etc., and helping advertise the many wonderful assets we already have!

Revitalizing, not rewriting history

Our history is in jeopardy amidst the divide of humanity set upon us. We have all heard the adage “Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.” I am writing this article in support of preserving our history through historical fiction, whether it be in a book or on stage proclaiming comradery for our past. In a time of such uncertainty in the writing and acting world, we are rapidly losing the core reason to create; the born desire for truth.
If I beg for honesty, I myself must maintain a level of transparency when writing as a non-native of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Despite growing up in the mountains of Hendersonville, I had never learned of the Battle of Kings Mountain. This alone stands as a proving point. If it were not for productions like Liberty Mountain: The Revolutionary Drama, even local history could be forgotten an hour and a half down these beautiful blue mountains.

If everything is kept a secret and there is no Robert Inman willing to put pen to paper, Joy Performance Theatre to house history, or artists taking on a role that may not be anything like themselves, then no one will do anything but wonder. So, I implore anyone reading to protect history these coming weekends. Support history, not for the sake of the past, but for the sake of the present. Watch performers of varying backgrounds come together to tell the story of a battle that changed the revolution. Remember and reinvigorate something dusty and old, yet lasting. Be entertained, yes, even through a sincere play about the Revolutionary War. Experience the scent of gunpowder and the sound of sacrifice for the greater good. Feel the rush of adrenaline when loyalist militia charges right past you. Put yourselves in the worn-out soles of a soldier’s boots as they tread the very foundation of our great country.

I am a published author of historical fiction and, in my recent novel, Lydia, I wrote from the perspective of a young woman navigating life during The Great Depression. I chose to set it in Hendersonville where even my neighbors have forgotten the terrible implementation of labor mills, politically-driven racism, poverty, and a time in which fear was the leading cause of faith. Forgotten, somehow, such a horrific, distant part of history, yet a currently familiar one. The Revolutionary War is even further from us and, therefore, at even more risk of being verbally altered or forgotten. Our progression as a society has led to the removal of anything we look back upon and find to be offensive or disagreeable. It is easier to ban a book than to read one and allow

A major update to the lobby has been in the works and a new exhibit will soon be revealed to the public. Recent updates to the Dino Safari exhibit will also be completed and ready for Mesozoic-era tourists.

If you do encounter a bear, remain calm and remember that the bear is likely more scared of you than you are of them. Attacks by black bears on people are very rare and most black bears can be easily scared away with the following approach:
• Stand and face the bear directly. Never run away from or approach them.
• Make yourself look as big as possible by spreading your arms or, better yet, a coat.
• Make as much noise as possible by yelling, banging pots and pans, or using other noisemaking devices.
• If the bear approaches and you have bear spray, spray the bear as they approach.

Quit your Stinkin’ Thinkin’
(Final Thoughts)
In this, my final article for a while, I want to reflect on what we’ve learned this month and how to avoid stinkin’ thinkin.’
Once again, let us look at Philippians 4:8.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Following
verse 7, the Apostle Paul gives his readers additional ways to combat anxiety by turning away from the negative and turning to the positive blessings God has given to all of us.
To be sure, changing our stinkin’ thinkin’ does not come easy or instantly. Instead, it is a process. I am reminded of the chorus, “Step by Step.”
O God, you are my God, and I will ever praise you. I will seek you in the morning, and I will learn to walk in your ways, and step by step, you’ll lead
me, and I will follow you all of my days. As I read Philippians 4:7-8, I can’t help but think of these lyrics. Are these words complex? No. Are these words profound? Yes.
Changing our perspective, or rather, allowing God to change our mindset, is a step-by-step process for life. Colossians
3:2 states, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” This secular culture invades our thoughts and lives every day. Therefore, you and I must intentionally set our minds on godly things. How, may you ask? It seems simple to tell you to
pray and read your bible, but it is true. For some, myself included, I need a plan though. I make a weekly to-do list; at the top are prayer and Bible study. After these articles, however, I have added a third item to the list: I will think about and write my blessings. With so many negative thoughts and agendas the world pushes our way, we must turn our attention to God’s words, promises, and benefits. I will be another year older on the Wednesday of this publication.
To be sure, my birthday played a small part in choosing my devotion-
al’s theme. Admittedly, it would be nice to be able to run and do some of the things I did as a teenager. At times, it is easy for me to grow anxious thinking about past or future choices. Instead, today I choose to follow Paul’s instructions. I will choose to think about the things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. This week, take time to count your many blessings with me. Be sure I will thank God for you, my brothers and sisters in Christ.

Cornbread & Tortillas is a collective of Appalachian and Latino artists based in Kentucky whose mission is to build community by sharing art, music, dance, and cultural heritage. They celebrate our similarities and differences through outreach events, educational shows, workshops, and performances to create unity in a diverse world.
The Arts Council is pleased to bring this exciting group from Lexington, Kentucky, to share their mission, heritage, music, and food! They will showcase music, dance, and a taste of Appalachian, Andean, and Mexican culture. Join us Thursday, Oct. 5, at 6:00 for a FREE performance and sing-along at the Arts Council, 111 S. The centerpiece of their work is the CORNBREAD & TORTILLAS theatrical show, a dynamic bilingual production featuring stories,
music, and dancing. Audiences will journey from the Appalachian region of Eastern Kentucky to Mexico, Nicaragua, Ecuador, and beyond, exploring connections and celebrating our shared human experience all the while!
Cornbread & Tortillas is a show in English and Spanish devised from the life stories of the artists involved, whose cultural heritages span from Appalachia to Nicaragua, Mexico, Guatemala, Greece, and Ecuador. It contains music, dance, and stories from throughout the Americas
with central themes of family, identity, work, love and art. You will see lots of instruments, including banjo, fiddle, mandolin, Andean flutes, charango, congas, and cajon, as well as mountain-style flatfooting and percussive Ballet Folklórico styles from Mexico and colorful traditional clothing. Weaving it all together is a narrative that illuminates the stories told through song and dance, highlighting our similarities and differences as human beings and building cultural bridges for our changing nation. As part of its Arts in Education outreach, the Arts Council will also present an educational program for the 2nd and 3rd graders in Cleveland County Schools on Oct. 5 & 6: “From Appalachia to the Andes”.
This diverse show consists of two artists from Appalachia and two of Latino heritage and is a mix of Appalachian, Andean, and
Mexican music, dance, and stories. Students will see and hear instruments such as the banjo, Appalachian Dulcimer, guitar, charango, zampoñas, quenas (Andean flutes), various drums, and rhythms made by dancing feet. Students will hear traditional songs of Mexico, Kentucky, and Ecuador, sung in English and Spanish. They will see and compare flatfoot dancing from Appalachia and several styles of colorful Ballet Folklórico from Mexico.
The artists highlight the interconnections among the various cultures in a mesmerizing way that celebrates the cultures involved. Audiences come away with an enhanced appreciation for cross-cultural similarities and differences and the variety of arts present in cultures throughout the Americas.

“Gateway to Nature” 2023

“Gateway to Nature”
art competition and exhibition opened this past week at Southern Arts Society in Kings Mountain. “Gateway to Nature” is an art exhibition and competition sponsored by Southern Arts Society that aims to explore the relationship between humans and nature. Artists were asked to create work that celebrates, references, or challenges our relationship with the natural world. There is a wide variety of media featured in the show - painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel), photography, and mixed media. Artists from around the region entered 62 pieces of work for this year’s exhibit. Entries
reflect upon the natural beauty surrounding us, as interpreted by the individual artists. You will recognize places, birds, animals, and insects, often caught in a glimpse, that are put down on canvas or captured in a photograph. These fleeting moments are now recorded to enjoy and study for posterity.
Judging the art for this year’s competition is Mark Hamilton, Professor of Fine Arts and Interim Chair, Department of Fine Arts at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Before coming to Winthrop, Mark worked as a photogra-

1 cup 7-Up
1 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
1 box chopped spinach, thawed
½ cup chopped onions
1 cup chopped celery
2 Tbs. lemon juice
1 cup mayonnaise
Dissolve gelatin in boiling
7-up. In mixing bowl blend softened cream cheese and thawed spinach. Combine gelatin and spinach mixtures and add remaining ingredients. Place in 1 ½ quart casserole and refrigerate until set. Serves 8.

The buildings at the Northwest corner of W. Mountain Street and Cherokee Streets have been condemned. It is interesting to look at these buildings over time to see how they served the people of the best city in the state over the years.
A 1902 Sanborn map shows a General Store at the corner with a Livery out back. The 1908 Sanborn map shows no change. But the 1919 Sanborn map shows the General Store had changed to an Undertaker’s and was likely Fulton’s Mortuary, where W.A. Mauney was taken to prepare him for
sign of the automobile age coming to Kings Mountain.
It is sad that the Livery can’t be saved, as it is one of the last remaining structures that served as such in town.
It is interesting to know that behind the shops on Battleground Avenue is currently a parking lot, but in the early 1900s, the area was known as the hitching yard.
The buildings along this section of Cherokee Street have been condemned.
KM Baptist update

If you have been by Kings Mountain Baptist Church at 101 W. Mountain Street in downtown Kings Mountain, you have probably noticed that the church has had exterior paintings done. Both additions to the church were painted a complimentary color to the brick of the main building.
“The color was chosen to complement the brick on our original church building. That brick was made here on-site more than 100 years ago,” Roxanne Bridges shared with the Herald.
In addition to the exterior painting, protective coverings for the stainedglass windows have been removed, allowing access to restore them. Once finished, new window covering will be installed to protect the beautiful stained-glass windows and allow light to pour through.
Make it a point to visit Kings Mountain Baptist to admire the updates to one of the most historic buildings in our community. The church's history dates to the 19th century when a group of devoted Christian women planted the church.
When the present sanctuary was constructed in 1913, the church became known as First Baptist Church of Kings Mountain. This was

The group that left took the name First Baptist Church of Kings Mountain and the remaining group took back the original name of Kings Mountain Baptist Church.
While the church is small, it is large in heart. Their worship services are traditional in style. The members have the joy of knowing one another personally and contributing regularly to the community's overall well-being.

Mountaineers host Forestview Friday night
Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers will be at home for the second straight week Friday when they host the Forestview Jaguars in a Big South 3A Conference football game at John Gamble Stadium.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
Forestview has suffered thus far with losses to some
good local ball teams. Mountaineer coach Strait Herron does not want his players to take a win for granted.
Despite their early-season record (0-2 in the Big South Conference and 1-5 overall) the Jaguars have a lot of potential with some good skill players and a veteran head coach in Chris
Medlin. Their lone win came against perennial state power Morganton Freedom 27-19 and two of their losses were to defending state 2A champion East Lincoln and a good Burns Bulldog eleven. Their two Big South losses were to Ashbrook 33-20 and North Gaston 26-20.
“Every game is a chal-
lenge and we will see how it unfolds,” Coach Herron said. “We want to get better for the future. Forestview’s not going to be easy.”
Their go-to running back thus far has been Christian Holland, a 5-8, 167-pound junior. They also have a veteran quarterback in senior Jaxson Hill, a 6-4, 172-
pound senior who can run and throw. He has 17 other seniors with experience to help him out.
Kings Mountain will counter with good skill players of their own as well as linemen who are giving the quarterbacks time to throw, the backs room to run and the receivers open routes.
Thus far, KM starting quarterback Zandon Zollo has hit 42 of 79 passes for 509 yards and reserve TJ Armstrong has completed 10 of 20 for 126 yards.
Ja’Qualyn Sanders has caught 16 passes for 269 yards and Jayden Gash 13 for 230.

Kings Mountain High’s women’s volleyball team closed out the first half of the Big South Conference schedule Thursday night with a tough 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-8 victory over Crest at Donald L. Parker Gymnasium.
The JVs made it a sweep in the opener with a 25-19, 25-12 victory.

Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers used outstanding blocking from their offensive line, running by senior Robert Kendrick and a hard-hitting defense to shut out the North Gaston Wildcats 42-0 Friday night at John Gamble Stadium.
The win kept the Mountaineers tied for first place in the Big South 3A Conference with their Cleveland County neighbor Crest. Belmont South Point, which was tied for first heading into Friday’s game, was upset by the Hunter Huss Huskies and
dropped into a four-way tie for third with North Gaston, Hunter Huss and Ashbrook.
“I’m happy with the way we played,” noted Mountaineer head coach Strait Herron.
“Our offense ran the ball extremely well. Kendrick had 21 carries for 196 yards. We would have loved for him to get 200. The whole offensive line did a tremendous job.
Alex Jackson had his best game of the year. Our sophomore, Dom Davis at guard, did a pretty good job also.”
Kendrick had the best game of his career and one
of the best of any running back in Mountaineer history, scoring four touchdowns to go with those 196 yards. Former KM, Clemson and Cleveland Browns great Kevin Mack holds the rushing mark of 287 yards against RS Central in 1979.
It didn’t take Kendrick and his teammates long to go out front Friday, driving the opening kickoff 66 yards in five plays. Kendrick scored on a 19 yard run and also had a 10-yard run for a first down. Quarterback Kandan Zollo threw passes of 18
yards to Jayden Gash, eight to Ja’Qualyn Sanders and 11 to Xzorian Lenair.
With Kendrick chalking up more yards, the Mountaineers drove deep into Wildcat territory on their next two possessions but missed field goals.
The offense shifted to high gear after that, though. Beginning at the 9:31 mark of the second quarter the Mountaineers drove 53 yards in eight plays to go up 14-0. Kendrick got things going with runs of 13 and five

The varsity carried a 7-0 conference and 20-1 overall record into the first second round game yesterday at Stuart Cramer. The JVs went in at 6-0 and 10-1.
All of the KM players had a good night. For the varsity, Meile Songaila had 26 kills, 13 digs, 11 serve receptions and 10 service points.
Camden Paysour had 39 assists, eight serve receptions, three kills, 10 digs and 11 service points.
Myracle Davis was strong on the nets with 16 kills and three blocks.
Mary Grace Hogue contributed five digs, three serve receptions, two kills and seven service points.
Alexa Jones had eight serve receptions, three blocks, six digs, seven assists and nine service points.

The Lady Mountaineers defeated South Point in a Big South Conference doubleheader last Tuesday night at Parker Gym.
The varsity won 25-11, 25-14 and 25-15 after the JVs opened the action with a 25-3, 25-2 victory.
For the varsity, Myracle Davis had 10 kills and five blocks, Camden Pasour 31 assists, four serve receptions, seven digs, nine service points and two blocks, Alexa Jones eight service points, four digs, five kills, two blocks, five assists and 16 service points, Meile Songaila six serve receptions, nine kills, 11 digs and four service points and London Brown nine kills and nine blocks.
Abigail Hedgepath, Ruby Osborne, Kenzlie Morris and Madi Broome had big games for the JVs. Hedgepath dished out 11 assists to go with two kills, two digs and 23 service points. Osborne had six kills and a block, Morris three kills and Broome 13 service points.
Watts, KMHS cross country win 11-team Lincolnton meet
Kings Mountain High’s men finished first and the women third in an 11-team cross country meet last Wednesday at Betty G. Ross Park in Lincolnton.
The Mountaineers dominated with 44 points to second place Bandys’ 20.
Isaiah Watts led the Mountaineers with a first place finish in 17:47, followed closely by teammate Max Thompson at 17:52.
Senior Hunter Cruise followed by freshmen Luke Howell and David Johnson were other high scoring runners for the Mountaineers.
The Kings Mountain women also had several runners with season and personal best finishes. Brooke Waseman led the way with a fourth place fin-
ish of 24:05. Sarah Eagle was 10th, Kallie Hope 14th, Tippy Johnsonbaugh 37th and Wren Ballard 38th.
Kings Mountain and over 30 other schools competed in the Freedom High School Cross Country Invitational Saturday and had another good showing.
“This is the location for the 3A West Regional meet later in the season, so this was an excellent opportunity to establish yourself as a possible state qualifier,” Coach Rayvis Key noted. “Max Thompson did exactly that running a 16:49 over the 3.1 mile course and finishing eighth overall.
As a team, the Mountaineers were a very respectable fifth place overall.
Other Mountaineers with
good showing were Isaiah Watts in 17:40, Hunter Cruise 19:06, Luke Howell 19:36 and David Johnson 19:39.
The Lady Mountaineers were once again led by Brooke Waseman finishing 51st with a season best time of 23:02. The team finished 13th out of a highly competitive field. Other scorers were Sarah Eagle 23:43, Kallie Hope 24:24, Tippy Johnsonbaugh 27:37 and senior Parker Wilson with a 27:52.
Kings Mountain’s next race will be October 7 at the Wendy’s Invitational at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte. There will be hundreds of runners from across the southeast competing.

Kings Mountain Middle School’s boys soccer team is poised to finish the season strong despite a string of tough injuries, including team co-captain Banks Myers.
While the end result of the first six games haven’t been in their favor, their coaches said they have been competitive in every game and within a goal or two of winning five of the six games.

the end of the season. For us, the key to winning is simply finishing. We are keeping the scores low from a defensive standpoint and connecting passes as we build up the field but we need to find the back of the net in order to get a win. I believe our boys are poised to do this as we head into the final four games of the season.”

Kings Mountain High’s JV football team posted its fourth straight victory Thursday night with a 36-0 shutout of the North Gaston Wildcats in Dallas.
The Mountaineers, who haven’t lost since a close opening-season game against the Shelby Lions, will take a 4-1 record into a game Thursday at 7 p.m. at Gastonia Forestview.
Jakelan Littlejohn got last week’s rout going with an 18-yard touchdown for a 6-0 lead on the Mountaineers’ first possession.
The Mountaineers ran the lead to 14-0 on Jayden Williams 11-yard TD run and Savion Lindsay’s twopoint conversion. Lindsay scored from 35 yards out to extend the Mountaineer lead to 20-0. He later scored from a yard out and followed it with his second two-point conversion for a 28-0 lead. Trenton Pettis scored KM’s final TD from five yards out and Aiden Kendrick added the two-point conversion to account for the final score.

Kings Mountain High’s women’s golfers finished third to South Point and Crest last week at Cramer Mountain Country Club. The Lady Mountaineers were scheduled to host the Big South Conference teams yesterday at Kings Mountain Country Club.
South Point out-distanced all the other teams with 121 points. Crest was second at 163 and KM came in at 171.
Forestview finished fourth at 174 followed by Ashbrook and Stuart Cramer both with 177. Hunter Huss and North Gaston did not have enough players for a team score.
Amelia Connor of South Point was the medalist with a 39.
Kaliyah Watson led KM with a 53. Mylin Eckard shot 57 and Jaiden Earle 61.

Unfair Real Estate Agreements Act signed into law
Attorney General Josh Stein joined Gov. Roy Cooper as the Governor signed the Unfair Real Estate Agreements Act into law on Friday, September 15. The attorney general’s office worked closely with legislators and stakeholders to draft the bill. The Unfair Real Estate Agreements Act will prohibit companies from using oppressive and excessively long-term agreements that undermine a person’s home ownership.
“Predatory businesses will not be allowed to trick North Carolina’s homeowners without consequences – not on my watch,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “I’ll keep fighting these bad actors, and I’m grateful to the legislature for passing
and Gov. Roy Cooper for signing legislation to put an end to these unfair real estate agreements.” In March, Attorney General Stein sued MV Realty alleging that they violated North Carolina’s laws prohibiting unfair and deceptive practices, usurious lending, abusive telephone solicitation practices, and unfair debt collection practices by tricking homeowners into signing oppressive, 40-year real estate agreements. The Department of Justice received about 60 complaints beginning in March 2022 and began investigating the company in the fall of 2022. MV Realty enrolled more than 2,100 homeowners in North Carolina in their predatory scheme. The Unfair Real Estate

GCPD FAST team arrests fugitive
On Monday, Sept. 25, the Gaston County Probation and Parole’s Apprehension, Capture, and Enforcement Unit requested assistance from the Gaston County Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension and Suspect Tracking (FAST) team in locating Theron Wingate. Wingate had an outstanding Felony Parole warrant related to the charge of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. FAST team and Probation and Parole officers

located Wingate near Short Street in Stanley. When officers attempted to arrest Wingate, he ran from officers, fleeing into a residence, and then refused to come out. Due to Wingate’s violent criminal history, the FAST team requested the
Gaston County Emergency Response Team’s (ERT) assistance. ERT responded to the scene, where Wingate quickly surrendered without incident. Wingate is currently being held at the Gaston County Jail without a bond. Gaston County Police would like to thank the Stanley Police Department for their assistance, which led to a quick resolution to this situation.

Kings Mountain Middle School also met its Growth Score; however, Kings Mountain Intermediate and Kings Mountain High School did not.
Since 2013-14, student performance data have been used to assign letter grades to North Carolina public schools as required by North Carolina General Statute 115C-83.15. The grades are based on each school’s achievement score (weight of 80%) and students’ academic growth (weight of 20%). The total school performance score is converted to a 100-point scale and then used to determine a school performance grade of A, B, C, D, or F.

Flu vaccine available at CC Health Department
It’s not too early to get your Flu shot. The Cleveland County Health Department joins the NC Division of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in urging everyone to vaccinate themselves against the flu. Everyone aged six months and older is encouraged to be immunized. The Flu vaccine will be available at the Cleveland County Health Department beginning Monday, September 25, 2023. The vaccine is available Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; no appointment is necessary.
It is not too early. The vaccine is safe, effective, and the best way to protect yourself and your family from getting the flu. In addition to vaccina-
tion, continue practicing healthy habits to protect yourself and others from flu viruses:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
• Throw the tissue in the trash promptly after use.
• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
