Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ

By Gary Miller

704-482-2436 Bert Costner NCAUNP43631

Are you obsessed over something? Has something gained your attention in such a way that you have made some drastic changes in order to accommodate that matter? Deer hunters do this all the time. I was just reliving the past season with a friend. He was telling me about a place where he hunted that was for bow hunters only. One evening, just before GARY MILLER dark, he saw what he called the buck of a lifetime, and it was only 60 yards from his stand. And even though he could not get a shot at it, it caused him to almost ignore all the other bucks that came his way; and there were plenty. By the time his few days of hunting were over, he had passed up some really big bucks because none of them were the “one” he had seen just a few days earlier. In the end, the cost was coming home emptyhanded all because he had become obsessed with one prize so valuable that every other prize paled in comparison. He is not alone in this obsession. I know of other hunters who have marked one particular buck as their goal and have waited for 2 or 3 years in order to get it. And I know of some who waited just as long only to find out their prize was now their neighbor’s trophy. Some may not understand this obsession. Some do. Everyone ought to. In recalling these stories, I am reminded of the Biblical story of the man who found a valuable pearl. The Bible says when he discovered it, he sold everything he owned and bought it. No diversification. No hedging his investment. No waiting until more favorable times. But selling it all – pushing it all in for this one pearl of great price. What was the Lord comparing this most valuable pearl to? The kingdom of heaven. What is the kingdom of heaven? Let’s just say it is the totality of God in our lives now and the greatness of heaven in the future. And what the Lord desires is this; that there would come a time in our lives when we finally understand the most valuable thing in our life is simply Him. And in fully understanding this, we would willfully, gladly, and excitingly be willing to give it all up to experience, without distraction, the worth and surpassing greatness of that relationship.

The Billion Dollar Impact of North Carolina’s Mountain Trout Fishing State Releases Insightful Trout Fishing Economic and Socioeconomic Data. Each dollar anglers spend to fish for mountain trout in North Carolina returns $1.93 to its economy and results in a $1.38 billion impact, according to new data from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC). The Evaluation of North Carolina Trout Anglers’ Opinions, Participation and Socioeconomic Impact study was developed by NCWRC’s Conservation Policy & Analysis group and the Inland Fisheries Division. The report deep dives into an analysis of the socioeconomic aspects of trout fishing. In addition to monetary values (including out-of-state angler contribution, equipment and trip-related expenditures, etc.), the study explores anglers’ motivation for participating in the sport, satisfaction levels and challenges of trout fishing in this state, as well as feedback on NCWRC’s management of trout. “We took a very comprehensive approach to this study. We wanted to better understand how anglers utilize the trout waters we manage and the views of trout fishing from the anglers themselves,” said Jake Rash, cold water fisheries research coordinator. “Understanding anglers’ motivations and perceptions provides broader insight into this popular North Carolina sport.” The report was published in July and outlines how the various dollar amounts spent on this sport resulted in an overall economic impact of $1.38 billion. The previous economic impact evaluation, published in 2015, reported the impact to be $383 million. The increase in the economic impact of trout fishing is largely due to the increase in freshwater anglers in North Carolina. The number of fishing license holders increased 53% from 2014 to 2023, while the estimated number of trout anglers increased from 18.5% to 32% of all licensed anglers. The 29% increase in the cost of living since 2014 may also have played an important role in increasing the cost of equipment and trip-related expenditures. “Given the recreational importance of trout fishing, it’s important for NCWRC to understand public perceptions on management of trout and expenditures on trout fishing,” said NCWRC Mountain Region Fisheries Supervisor, Doug

Besler. “These surveys put an economic value on the resources we manage and help us focus our programs and infrastructure, such as capital investments in modern fish hatcheries. In addition, these surveys allow us to better communicate with constituents and partners about the value of the Public Mountain Trout Water program (PMTW) and its potential benefits to their community.” The PMTW program manages approximately 5,400 miles and 2,600 acres of trout waters in 26 western counties, with six distinct classifications: catch and release, delayed harvest, hatchery supported, special regulations, wild trout waters and wild trout/natural bait waters. This year, the N.C. General Assembly granted $20 million to NCWRC to help fund a major renovation and expansion of the Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, which is NCWRC’s largest trout-producing hatchery. NCWRC hatcheries produce and stock about one million brook, rainbow and brown trout each year. PMTW also manages and oversees wild, self-sustaining trout populations; native brook trout conservation; aquatic organism passage and stream habitat projects; numerous partnerships; and aquatic nuisance species management. Visit NCwildlife.org for summaries of both the economic and socioeconomic impacts, species information and the trout resource page (which contains information regarding regulations, maps, hatcheries and stocking efforts). 34 new jobs for Cleveland County

Three RIA grants announced for Cleveland and Gaston counties Quantum Power, a North Carolina-based renewal energy company, will create 34 jobs in Cleveland County and invest $19 million to establish a new facility in Lawndale in Cleveland County. The company’s new operations will be located in the Broad River Assets building, formerly Cleveland Mills. Quantum Power generates clean, renewable energy in the form of electricity

generated by a fuel stock that otherwise would have been discarded. Their cleancombustion process converts industrial byproducts into sustainable power. This new location will support Quantum Powers’ expansion in North Carolina. “After an extensive search throughout the southeast, we selected Lawndale, North Carolina for our newest facility based on key supply chain factors and

a supportive community,” said Mark Romano, President. “We look forward to an ongoing partnership with the State of North Carolina as we expand our company.” “We are excited that Quantum Power has chosen Lawndale for their new operations in Cleveland County,” said Ray Padgett, Mayor of Lawndale. “These jobs will have a positive impact on our community and be a catalyst for growth, and for that,

we are extremely grateful," Padgett added. “On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, we are extremely grateful to Quantum Power for choosing Cleveland County and the Broad River Assets Solutions property to be the future home of your new operations. We commit to being your company’s supportive and enduring partner in the future and look forward to watching your business

The N.C. Chamber named Senator W. Ted Alexander a 2023 Jobs Champion in its annual How They Voted report. How They Voted details state legislators’ voting records on bills identified as critical to preserving and enhancing North Carolina’s position in the global race for jobs. Senator Alexander was recognized as a Jobs Champion for voting with the Chamber’s Jobs Agenda at least 80 percent of the time during the 2023 legislative session. “People’s ability to work and earn a living is predicated on job availability, which is the backbone of a healthy, thriving economy and elevates the dignity of each human individual. I will continue in my efforts to see that North Carolinians have access to good jobs in order to thrive and care for their families.” said Senator Ted Alexander. “As we work to maintain our status as the top state for business, North Carolina’s job creators need to know which of our leaders are willing to act to keep us competitive,” said NC Chamber President and

SENATOR TED ALEXANDER CEO Gary Salamido. “The bold leadership displayed by Sen. Ted Alexander and other NC Chamber Jobs Champions in 2023 will help our businesses continue to invest in North Carolina and its people. We look forward to continuing to work with Senator Alexander in the year ahead to foster continued growth and success across our communities.” The NC Chamber works to research, develop, advocate, and communicate for solutions and policies that produce a nationally competitive business climate in North Carolina.

Medicaid Expansion Launches in North Carolina

DAILY SPECIALS

Approximately 6,000 Cleveland County Residents Newly Eligible.

Front row: Doug Bridges, Deb Hardin: Vice Chair. Back Row: Ronnie Whetstine, Kevin Gordon: Chair, and Johnny Hutchins.

Cleveland County Board of Commissioners Elect Chair and Vice Chair The Cleveland County Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce the 2023-2024 Board Chair and Vice Chair. The Board held their annual Organizational Meeting on December 4th at 10 am where the Commissioners unanimously elected Kevin Gordon as Chairman and Deb Hardin as Vice Chairman. The Cleveland County Board of Commissioners is a fivemember, elected Board that governs Cleveland County. The County Commissioners meet on the first and third Tuesdays of each month (unless otherwise noted) at 6:00 PM in the Commissioners' Chambers on the second floor of the Cleveland County Administration Building, located at 311 East Submitted by Karyn Owens Marion Street in Shelby.

Starting Dec. 1, 2023, more people can now get health coverage in Cleveland County through Medicaid. Medicaid pays for doctor visits, yearly check-ups, emergency care, mental health services, and more – at little or no cost to beneficiaries. Medicaid expansion will cover uninsured individuals ages 19 through 64 years with higher incomes, closing the coverage gap for many North Carolinians. Residents, who may not have qualified before, may now be able to receive health care insurance through Medicaid. Cleveland County residents may qualify for expanded coverage if they meet the following criteria: • Age 19 through 64 • Are a citizen. Some non-U.S. citizens can get health care coverage through Medicaid. • Have a household income that is below 138% of the federal poverty level - approximately $20,000 for a single adult or about $34,000 for a family of three. Due to the high volume of anticipated applications, we encourage residents to apply online at epass.nc.gov. Residents can also mail, email, or fax a paper application by downloading a copy online or apply in person at the Cleveland County Department of Social Services (DSS), located at 200 S. Post Road in Shelby. Applications may take up to 45 days to process. To help expedite the process, you can: • Apply online at ePASS and provide all the information requested. If the application is incomplete, it may take longer to process requiring DSS to follow up with the applicant. • Keep contact information up-to-date in ePASS, to receive all important information about Medicaid benefits. • Sign up for an enhanced ePASS account to keep information updated without having to contact the local DSS office. For more information or to learn how to apply, please visit Medicaid.nc.gov. Submitted by Karyn Owens

The Blanket of Snow (Part 2 of “A Winter Wonderland” series)

The first thing that captures our attention during winter is the white blanket of snow that covers the earth. As a child, snow meant adventures: building a snowman, making snow angels, or eating snow. One year a friend and I climbed the fence of a school across the street where we lived. Then, we took trash bags and sled down the big hill behind the school. We had much fun rolling around in that beautiful, white snow. Spiritually, white symbolizes purity and innocence. We are called to be pure and strive for holiness. 2 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV) says, “Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for

DANYALE PATTERSON

God.” Strengthen Yourself Keeping ourselves pure is not the easiest thing to do. We live in a world where we are bombarded with immorality and anti-biblical principles. Sinful pleasures are at our fingertips daily, tempting us to do what feels good instead of what is righteous. The internet and social media have given us, especially our children, access to filth within seconds. However,

God is never surprised or unprepared for demoniac activity and sinful people. He gave us tools to help us live victoriously such as prayer and his holy word - the BIBLE. I have found over the years that the more I meditate on scripture, the stronger I am to resist temptations. Psalm 119:9 (AMP) says, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping watch [on himself] according to Your word [conforming his life to Your precepts].” If you desire to keep your life pure, you have to be intentional. Find out what God says, meditate on it, and ask him to help you obey it. When you mess up, ask forgiveness. PRAY THIS PRAYER: Father, you, alone, are righteous and perfect in all of your ways. I exalt your holy name. Your word says that you chasten those you love. Thank you for demonstrating your love for me by correcting me. You are never harsh with me like humans are, but firm and loving. Lord, I ask you to examine my heart and cleanse me from any impurity that may hinder my walk with you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Connecting to God Are you missing love, joy, or peace in your life? It’s not a feeling; it’s a person. Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, wants to fill the void in your life with himself NOW and FOREVER! Hebrews 3:14 (CEV) says, …”If you hear his voice today, don’t be stubborn like those who rebelled.” Right now, ask forgiveness for all your sins. Then, ask Jesus to come into your heart to be your Savior and Lord. Ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit and to lead you to a church where you can grow and serve. Start reading your bible every day. I’ll be praying for yous. Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you! “Keyboards at Christmas” at First Baptist this Sunday One of the area’s most unusual musical events will once again be presented on the stage of First Baptist Church at 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM, this Sunday, December 17th. This year’s Keyboards at Christmas will be the tenth presentation of what has become a highly anticipated bi-annual celebration of the season. Surrounded by the festive decor of the worship center, this instrumental presentation emits from a stage packed with five grand pianos, an electric keyboard, organ and, for some songs, a full array of handbells. A concert style presentation utilizing six pianists at the same time is most unusual for any entertainment venue. One out of town visitor at the last Keyboards event was overheard saying “we don’t have anything like this in Charlotte”. This leads the question, how did such an elaborate Christmas program originate in Kings Mountain? An answer is offered by Dr. Jonathan Bundon, Worship Pastor of First Baptist Church and the developer of the Kings Mountain Keyboards at Christmas series: “When I came to Kings Mountain 17 years ago, I was astounded at the amount of talent as well as humility that was in this church.” Bundon began building on that talent to form the current musical offerings of a full adult choir, multiple bands and praise teams as well as musical training for all ages. Bundon’s one-word mantra, “excellence,” led him to pull together some of the area’s leading pianists to develop this novel Christmas concert of multiple keyboards. The six pianists for this unusual program include Bundon, Michael Sisk, Traci Aderholdt, Heather Bundon, Bethany Keller and Sherry Thomas. Staging for this event is quite a task in itself. In addition to the church’s grand piano in the worship center, four other grand pianos must be secured from various locations, hauled to the church, loaded to the stage and arranged. Then each must be professionally tuned. Of course, after

the presentation, those four must be removed and returned to their respective locations. Since such a presentation is not a normal part of a church’s programming, it’s fair to ask why the church would go to such expense and effort? The church’s pastor, Dr. Chip Sloan, answers, “We love sharing this festive event with the entire community. Christmas joyfully commemorates the earthly birth of our Saviour in human form, initiating for all the free gift of salvation. Keyboards at Christmas is part of our celebration of this Gift; we are pleased to offer this program to our area with no admission charge. This is our Christ-

mas gift to the community.” While the pianos are easy to see, the gifts that are less visible are the countless hours of preparation by the six pianists who bring their talents to the stage. Bundon says that musical selections are experimented with in the warmth of summer, and each pianist, giving time and effort without financial compensation, practices for months both individually and together. “Their contribution cannot be overstated,” he says. The 6:00 PM presentation of Keyboards at Christmas will also be livestreamed on the church’s website at www.fbckm.com and on YouTube.

Keyboards at Christmas will be held on Sunday, December 17 at 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. (Photos provided)
