KM’s Central School sold to Gaston Christian School was far greater than our own, and we knew He had the ultimate say in where He wanted to grow this campus,” she shared. “After talking with some colleagues and mentioning Central to our Headmaster, I was able to set up a tour of this historic property. GCS began to pray over this location, renovation costs, and everything needed to restore this school to its former beauty. Central School dates back to 1876 when it was first established as a Boarding and Day School and eventually turned into KMHS in 1887,” Brittany continued. “My girls have been a part of Gaston Christian School for the last 4 years, and I can’t say enough about the school, administrators, and teachers. I know God will continue using this new campus in Kings Mountain to further His Kingdom and Prepare

By Loretta Cozart

On December 22, Gaston Christian School, GCS, purchased Central School at 105 East Ridge Street in Kings Mountain with plans to restore the property and use it for its intended purpose: as a school for children. The facility will be known as Gaston Christian School -East Cleveland Campus. GCS currently has two other campuses: one at 1625 Lowell Bethesda Road in Gastonia, and the other at 301 N. Post Road in Shelby. For eighteen months, the school searched Cleveland County for land, churches, and school buildings that were no longer in use. Real estate agent Brittany McNeilly Austin helped in the search. Her daughters attend GCS. “I had the honor of helping my girls’ school close on their new location in Kings Mountain. For the last 18 months, we’ve looked all over Cleveland County, hoping to find a permanent location. Prayer after prayer, we knew God’s plan

CENTRAL SCHOOL People, Teach Truth and Glorify God.” Brittany also thanked David Brinkley, Marie Myers Brinkley, and John McGill, who sold the property to GCS. David Brinkley shared about the deal: “We looked at several options for the Central School property, including mixed-use with condominiums and a restaurant. But then this opportunity popped up. Keeping it as a school made sense because

the property was originally designed for that. And supporting our children and Christian values is always a priority. The school will serve the children of our community and be a powerful addition to Kings Mountain, attracting students from other towns as well. Gaston Christian School’s desire to preserve the buildings made this an easy decision for us since many Kings Mountain

residents love this building and want to see it saved.” Gaston Christian School is a premiere Christian school with a mission to prepare students academically and spiritually in light of God’s word. GCS graduates have been accepted to over 200 four-year colleges and universities – small and large, public and private, Christian and secular, Ivy League, and art & design institutes.

Area campgrounds win OHI’s biggest awards Broad River Campground; Jellystone, Golden Valley Provided by Jean Gordon

The Outdoor Hospitality Conference and Expo (OHCE2023), under the organization of OHwI (formerly National ARVC), celebrated the champions of the industry by announcing the winners of the prestigious 2023 Awards of Excellence recently. Two area campgrounds received top awards for the Park of the Year. Broad River Campground, a new 90-acre park, adjacent to the Broad River Greenway near Boiling Springs, took the award for Small

Park of the Year. In a statement upon the recognition, Tyler Watts, of Student Rental Investments, said, “OHI hosts an annual national conference where park owners/operators across the nation gather to network and gain inside knowledge. Being crowned Small Park of the Year is a prestigious honor. To even be selected as Park of the Year in our first full year of operation is monumental, winning it was a dream come true.” Tying for the Large Park of the Year was Jellystone Park Golden Valley in Bostic.

Tying with Jellystone Park Golden Valley was Jellystone Park at Larkspur (Larkspur, Colo.) OHI noted that judges tied on these two parks, so both were honored. In the Medium Park category, the award was clinched by Jellystone Park Kozy Rest in Harrisville, PA. For the Mega Park category, the winner was Sun Outdoors Frontier Town in Berlin, MD. The Awards of Excellence, a peer-reviewed and judged accolade, honors the “best of the best” in Broad River Campground received the the outdoor hospitality industry by award of excellence for Small Park of the See CAMPGROUNDS, Page 6 Year. Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ

By Gary Miller I’ve never been much for hiking even though some of my friends love it. And I feel the same way about camping. I’ve often said that if I’m camping, there needs to be a hunting or fishing trip involved somewhere. Otherwise, I prefer a weekend getaway in a condo and breakfast at the Cracker Barrel. That idea goes for hiking as well. When I walk through GARY MILLER the woods, I can’t help but continually scout for signs of animals I may want to hunt. I can’t imagine just walking through the woods to get to a place that has no hunting or fishing value. But this is just me. I have, however, even had to change how I view more adventurous hunting and fishing trips. At my age, I’m not too fond of rock pillows and sleeping bags. I like to sleep and wake up without unnecessary aches and pains. So, a week in the wilderness, even when the fishing is great, does not have the same appeal that it used to. My mind is still in it. My heart is still in it. My spirit of adventure is still hot. And I’m in pretty good shape for my age. But I guess I’ve really gotten used to security and comfort. This also scares me. The last thing I want to do in my Christian life is default to security and comfort. I’ve seen it too many times over the years. It seems the older people get they are less likely to allow God to challenge their walk of faith. They are no longer eager to hike to the top of an uncomfortable mountain and camp at the cliff of insecurity. I want to be like Caleb. He was only one of two men who stood with Moses in encouraging his people to enter the Promised Land despite the presence of difficulties. But it isn’t the young Caleb I want to be like; it’s the old one. It’s the one who, after forty years of wandering through the desert, finally crossed into that land and asks for his portion of the property to be a mountain. But it was not just any mountain; it was one that was inhabited by the ancestors of the giant Goliath. Here’s the request that Caleb made to Joshua. “Now, as you can see, the Lord has kept me alive and well as he promised for all these forty-five years since Moses made this promise - even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Today I am eighty-five years old. I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then. So, I’m asking you to give me the hill country that the LORD promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the Anakites living there in great, walled cities. But if the LORD is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the LORD said.” Gary Brecka says, “Aging is the aggressive pursuit of comfort.” Caleb knew none of this. My friend, ask God today for a hill. Ask Him to never allow you to be satisfied with faithless security and aging comfort. You may have to leave the safe confines of what you know, but if the Lord is with you…………………… Gary Miller has written Outdoor Truths articles for 21 years. He has also written five books which include compilations of his articles and a father/son devotional. He also speaks at wildgame dinners and men’s events for churches and associations. gary@outdoortruths.org

$13.78 Million in Funding awarded to State, Local Parks The N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation announced end-of-year funding totaling more than $13 million that will benefit both local and state parks through federal and state funds. The North Carolina Parks and Recreation Authority has approved $3.45 million in land acquisition and $3.5 million in capital improvement projects for state parks across the state. The $6.95 million in combined funding is a portion of the annual allocation for state parks from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. The land acquisition projects will add nearly 450 acres combined to Chimney Rock, Elk Knob, Lumber River, Medoc Mountain, and Merchants Millpond state parks. Most of the projects address important conservation needs outlined in the division’s land protection plan. Other projects will allow the division to build the necessary infrastructure to support state park operations. Meanwhile, most of the capital improvement funding is earmarked for various repairs and renovations across the state parks system. The Parks and Recreation Trust Fund is administered through the state’s Division of Parks and Recreation.

“The state parks allocation from the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund is critical in conserving the state’s spectacular natural areas and providing outdoor recreation and educational opportunities across our state,” said D. Reid Wilson, secretary of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. “We appreciate the strong funding support from the General Assembly and Governor Roy Cooper.” The land acquisition projects are: • $230,000 for Chimney Rock State Park to purchase a tract in Rutherford County • $330,000 for Elk Knob State Park in Watauga County to protect high-value conservation land along the eastern rim of Long Hope Valley • $719,000 for Lumber River State Park in Robeson County to protect forested areas along the river near the Wire Pasture Access • $471,000 for Medoc Mountain State Park in Halifax County to conserve land that will protect water quality along Bear Swamp Creek and Little Fishing Creek, the latter considered one of the most biologically diverse rivers in the state’s Coastal Plain

DAILY SPECIALS

• $1.7 million for Merchants Millpond State Park in Gates County for land acreage that will connect the visitor center and campground areas, house operations support facilities, and allow for improved natural resource management The capital improvement projects are: • $500,000 for Hammocks Beach State Park in Onslow County to address structural concerns and improve educational exhibits at the visitor center • $3 million for major maintenance projects across the state parks system Four local parks and recreation projects received grants through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund as part of the state’s annual allocation from that fund. The LWCF grant recipients, who will each receive $500,000, are: • The town of Summerfield in Guilford County for Bandera Farms Park • Cleveland County Water and the town of Lawndale for Lawndale Park • The city of Lowell in Gaston County for Harold Rankin Park • The city of Rocky Mount for Sunset Park

The state parks division also received two LWCF awards: a $250,000 Planning Grant and a $195,805 Administration Grant. “We are pleased that the division also received LWCF grants for planning and administration,” said Division Director Brian Strong. “The division will use the planning grant in our efforts to develop the State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan for 2025-2030, which is necessary for North Carolina to remain eligible for LWCF funding. The administration grant will help the division transition to an improved online grants application and administration process.” In addition to the state’s LWCF annual allocation, the city of Greensboro was also selected as the recipient of a $4.3 million grant for Nocho Park from the National Park Service’s Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership program, a highly selective grant funded through the LWCF. Greensboro’s project is one of five local projects across the country chosen for this grant, which was announced in October. For more information, please visit www.ncdcr.gov. Wood floor installation dos and don’ts Jaw-dropping features can sell a home in a heartbeat. A penthouse apartment with floorto-ceiling windows and a panoramic view of a city skyline likely won’t prove a hard sell, nor will a home with an infinity pool overlooking a landscape of rolling hills. As awe-inspiring as such features can be, some more subtle components, such as authentic hardwood floors, also can do much to make a home more appealing to prospective buyers. Hardwood flooring is a sought-after commodity. Data from the National Association of Realtors indicates that 54 percent of home buyers are willing to pay more for hardwood floors. In fact, NAR figures indicate that 28 percent of buyers between the ages of 35 and 54 consider hardwood floors “very important” when looking for a home. Homeowners who are considering selling their homes, or those who simply want to upgrade their existing flooring, may want to consider installing hardwood flooring. Though it’s a project best left to professionals, hardwood flooring can be installed by skilled DIYers. In such instances, homeowners may want to keep these dos and don’ts in mind. DO hire a professional if you have limited or no DIY flooring experience. Hardwood flooring installation is not generally a project for novice DIYers. Hardwood flooring projects may present some common challenges, but no two homes are the same. So unless they have prior experience installing floors in multiple rooms or homes, homeowners may save themselves time, trouble and a significant amount of money hiring a professional to do the job. DON’T ignore the subfloor. New hardwoods won’t erase the problem of subfloors in poor condition. According to the home renovation experts at BobVila.com, squeaky floors could be an indication that the subfloor has begun to warp or twist. Sinking floors are another indicator of deteriorating subfloors. Subfloors should be somewhat level before new hardwoods are installed, so DIYers should inspect and address

ARCADIAN WILD subfloor issues before installing new flooring. DO expose wood flooring to the elements in your home prior to installation. The home improvement resource BuildDirect recommends acclimating hardwoods to the space where they will be installed. Skipping this important step could result in gaps during the winter and cupping over the summer. To acclimate hardwoods, open the boxes and spread them out for about a week while running the air conditioner or heater at normal levels. When storing hardwoods prior to installation, avoid keeping them in potentially moist areas like a basement. DON’T skimp on tools. A DIY hardwood flooring installation might be less expensive than hiring a professional, but homeowners should resist any temptation to increase those savings further by purchasing less costly tools or fewer tools than is necessary to complete the job. BuildDirect notes that DIYers will need at least a miter saw, table saw, cleat-nailer or stapler, finish nailer, compressor, jamb saw, chalk line, nail set, and tape measurer when installing hardwood floors. Purchase all necessary tools and read product reviews to ensure each tool is up to the task. Wood floors can be awe-inspiring. Some homeowners can install such flooring on their own, and the project can be much easier if they learn as much about installation as possible prior to beginning the project.

Kitchens are often described as the busiest rooms in a home. Kitchens are where meals are prepared and tend to be go-to gathering spots on holiday get-togethers and during other events when homeowners host family and friends. With so much time spent in the kitchen, it’s easy to see how homeowners might grow a little bored by these rooms. The cost of a kitchen remodel won’t be cheap, as the home improvement resource Angi. com notes that the typical cost of such a project in the United States is between $13,000 and $38,000. Angi. com estimates even indicate that a high-end remodel could cost homeowners as much as $61,000. That’s beyond many homeowners’ budgets. But the good news is that there are many quick and easy, not to mention less expensive, ways to give a kitchen a new look. • Repaint and restyle the cabinets. Cabinet space is an undeniably precious commodity in a kitchen, especially as more and more homeowners embrace their inner chef and cook more complicated meals at home. After all, the more expansive a home chef’s culinary repertoire, the more space that person needs to store all the tools of the cooking trade. A full cabinet replacement is unnecessary if the cabinets are still functional and not overcrowded, so repainting them can be a great way to give the kitchen a new look while keeping costs reasonable. During the painting project, homeowners can install new cabinet knobs and/or drawer pulls to freshen up the style of the cabinets even further. • Install under-cabinet lighting. Another inexpensive way to give a kitchen a new look is to install under-cabinet lighting. Under-cabinet light-

ing serves both an aesthetic and practical purpose. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, under-cabinet lighting can make a kitchen feel more warm and keep the kitchen illuminated when meals aren’t being prepared and homeowners don’t want to have their overhead lights on but still want to be able to navigate the kitchen safely. During meal prep, under-cabinet lighting can illuminate counters so it’s easier to chop, peel and perform other prep tasks. • Replace existing backsplash. Replacing backsplash is another simple, inexpensive and effective way to give a kitchen a new feel. Homeowners can opt for something neutral that won’t upset their existing decor or go with a more bold backsplash that immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. This simple job can be done by the average doit-yourselfer and the cost of new backsplash won’t break the bank. • Replace existing seating. Whether you have an island countertop with bar stools or a breakfast nook with cushioned seats, replacing the seating is a budget-friendly job that can create a new look when entering the room. Countertop bar stools come in many styles, so giving this area of the kitchen a new feel can be as simple as shifting from classic, high-back stools to more modern swivel stools with a chrome base. For the breakfast nook, replacing a light-colored bench cushion with a bolder alternative can instantly transform the look of the space. Kitchen remodels can break the bank. But there’s a host of budget-friendly ways for costconscious homeowners to revitalize these popular spaces in their homes.

SHS presents “9 to 5 The Musical February 15 thru 18 Shelby High School Theatre Department will present “9 to 5 The Musical” on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, February 15, 16, and 17 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, February 18 at 2 p.m. in Malcolm Brown Auditorium. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for senior citizens, $5 for students, and children 5 and younger get in for free. Tickets may be purchased in advance online for $9 by going to www. shelbyhightheatre.com. “9 to 5 The Musical”, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970s, this story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic. Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with Franklin Hart, the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. While Hart remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can't she? This performance will be competing in The Blumey Awards through

Blumenthal Performing Arts. As part of The Blumey Awards, schools in the Charlotte area present their annual musical theater productions. Each school’s musical is viewed and evaluated by a panel of three judges, who award points according to detailed guidelines. Awards are then given in a variety of areas, including Best Musical Tier 1, Best Musical Tier 2, Best Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Featured Performer, Best Ensemble/ Chorus, Best Choreography Execution, Best Overall Direction, Best Student Costume Designer, Best Student Set Designer, and Best Student Stage Manager. The Blumey Awards is produced by Blumenthal Performing Arts and is presented by Wells Fargo. The Doctor Family Foundation, The Leon Levine Foundation, Sync Storage Solutions, and Page Power Systems provide additional support. In hosting annual high school musical theater awards programs, Charlotte joins more than 40 other cities, including Pittsburgh, Houston, and Atlanta.

The Billion Dollar Impact of North Carolina’s Mountain Trout Fishing State Releases Insightful Trout Fishing Economic and Socioeconomic Data Each dollar anglers spend to fish for mountain trout in North Carolina returns $1.93 to its economy and results in a $1.38 billion impact, according to new data from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC). The Evaluation of North Carolina Trout Anglers’ Opinions, Participation and Socioeconomic Impact study was developed by NCWRC’s Conservation Policy & Analysis group and the Inland Fisheries Division. The report deep dives into an analysis of the socioeconomic aspects of trout fishing. In addition to monetary values (including out-ofstate angler contribution, equipment and trip-related expenditures, etc.), the study explores anglers’ motivation for participating in the sport, satisfaction levels and challenges of trout fishing in this state, as well as feedback on NCWRC’s management of trout. “We took a very comprehensive approach to this study. We wanted to better understand how anglers utilize the trout waters we manage and the views of trout fishing from the anglers themselves,” said Jake Rash, cold water fisheries research coordinator. “Understanding anglers’ motivations and

perceptions provides broader insight into this popular North Carolina sport.” The report was published in July and outlines how the various dollar amounts spent on this sport resulted in an overall economic impact of $1.38 billion. The previous economic impact evaluation, published in 2015, reported the impact to be $383 million. The increase in the economic impact of trout fishing is largely due to the increase in freshwater anglers in North Carolina. The number of fishing license holders increased 53% from 2014 to 2023, while the estimated number of trout anglers increased from 18.5% to 32% of all licensed anglers. The 29% increase in the cost of living since 2014 may also have played an important role in increasing the cost of equipment and trip-related expenditures. “Given the recreational importance of trout fishing, it’s important for NCWRC to understand public perceptions on management of trout and expenditures on trout fishing,” said NCWRC Mountain Region Fisheries Supervisor, Doug Besler. “These surveys put an economic value on the

resources we manage and help us focus our programs and infrastructure, such as capital investments in modern fish hatcheries. In addition, these surveys allow us to better communicate with constituents and partners about the value of the Public Mountain Trout Water program (PMTW) and its potential benefits to their community.” The PMTW program manages approximately 5,400 miles and 2,600 acres of trout waters in 26 western counties, with six distinct classifications: catch and release, delayed harvest, hatchery supported, special regulations, wild trout waters and wild trout/ natural bait waters. This year, the N.C. General Assembly granted $20 million to NCWRC to help fund a major renovation and

expansion of the Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, which is NCWRC’s largest trout-producing hatchery. NCWRC hatcheries produce and stock about one million brook, rainbow and brown trout each year. PMTW also manages and oversees wild, self-sustaining trout populations; native brook trout conservation; aquatic organism passage and stream habitat projects; numerous partnerships; and aquatic nuisance species management. Visit NCwildlife. org for summaries of both the economic and socioeconomic impacts, species information and the trout resource page (which contains information regarding regulations, maps, hatcheries and stocking efforts). Are you beginning 2024 a little fatter? By Dr. Glenn Mollette 2024 is here and congratulations – you are here to celebrate! This is the time of the year when people are mak- Glenn Mollette ing New Guest Editorial Year’s resolutions. Typically, the most common is to lose a few pounds. I suspect you want to lose a couple of pounds. Maybe you need to lose a lot of pounds. Many of us do. From September 1 through December, 27 I gained 15 pounds. I know, that’s really bad. I wasn’t bad for four months but I had a few good spells of being bad. On September 1st, I weighed 198 pounds. Then on December 27th, I weighed 213 pounds. My trend started when I had my colonoscopy. My doctor didn’t want me to eat any salads and a number of other healthy foods in preparation for my procedure. I had some very happy meals and gained almost two pounds leading up to my test. A couple of

family get togethers, a vacation, Thanksgiving and Christmas added up to 15 pounds. Let me tell you, I can tell the difference when I put my shoes on. Also, developing plantar fasciitis and a sore foot didn’t help matters either. Many Americans deal with this occasional foot issue. During flare ups it really hurts to walk. The only way I’ll be able to shed the pounds is to get real religious on my eating. We gain weight by eating too much and we lose weight when we cut back the portions and eat much less. A lot of our eating is habit. We think we have to be eating all the time. Winter months are tough because on cold dreary days and nights we hibernate in front of the TV and think we have to have food going into our mouths. Consider sane proportional eating. Eat three small meals a day. Women can typically lose weight if they keep the calories to 1200 a day. If you are active then maybe 1400. Aim for three four hundred calorie meals. Men typically can lose on about 1700 calories a day. This gives you three meals at just under 600 per meal. Keep in mind that often, food

has more calories than we think. Another option is to graze all day. A fitness trainer friend says he eats six times a day, but it’s only about 300 calories at a time. The upside to this plan is you are always looking forward to your next little meal. If you like to eat all the time this may be your best plan. Any activity that you can employ will also help. Winter months are tough so you have to be creative. Walk in place. Clean your house. Do setups while watching television. Do some toe touches, pushups, squats and anything that will get your heart rate up. Gym memberships soar at this time of the year. If you have time to go to the gym it might help you get through the winter. Mentally, it might help you to get out of the house. I’m with you on this. My hope is to lose one pound a week. Maybe by Easter I’ll be back to where I want to be. Drop me a note at GlennMollette.com or gmollette@aol.com and let me know how you are doing and I’ll post more later if I have been able to shed my extra pounds. Good luck!

Teen driver law changed on Jan. 1 The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles reminds teen drivers and their parents of changes to the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system made by the legislature that will go into effect in the new year. On Jan. 1, teenage drivers need to have their Level 1 Limited Learner Permit for nine months instead of the current six months before being able to get their Level 2 Limited Provisional License. DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said, “The law doesn’t allow for grandfathering anyone in, so if someone has their six months of Level 1 in before the end of the year but doesn’t get in to take their road test by Dec. 29, they will have to wait until they hit nine months to take the road test and get their Level 2. Anyone who got their Level 1 after June 30 must have

nine months.” The requirement to advance to Level 2 had been 12 months for most of the past 25 years since the GDL system was implemented in 1997. During the COVID19 pandemic, the legislature temporarily shortened this requirement to six months. That provision lapsed at the end of 2022 until a new law was enacted on May 8, which extended the six-month provision again through 2023. As of Jan. 1, the provision was permanently changed to nine months. Teen drivers seeking a Level 2 license must be at least 16 years old, log 60 hours of driving time, pass a road test, and show printed proof of insurance in the teen driver’s name.

we may have to set aside our desires, aspirations, or fears to follow the path that God has prepared for us. It can be challenging, but God will never leave or forsake us. Psalm 118:5-7b,8 (NLT) “In my distress I prayed to the LORD, and the LORD answered me and set me free. The LORD is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? Yes, the LORD is for me; he will help me. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in people.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: DANYALE PATTERSON Father, you have great plans for my life. Moments of Opportunity

In life, we often come across moments of opportunity. These are the times when we are presented with a chance to do something great, to make a difference, or to achieve our goals. The Bible is filled with stories of people who took advantage of their moments of opportunity. One such example is the story of Esther. Esther was a young Jewish girl who became queen of Persia. When she learned that her people were in danger of extermination, she was faced with a crucial decision. She could choose to remain silent and let her people perish, or she could use her position to intervene on their behalf. She made the courageous choice to speak up and her people were saved. She states in Esther 4:16 (NIV) “Go and gather together all the Jews of Susa and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will do

Meteor shower best Local projects awarded Food Distribution viewed Wednesday Assistance Program and Thursday The Quadrantids meteor shower, the first to peak in 2024, began on Thursday. According to the American Meteor Society, the shower will run from December 28 to January 16, with the peak expected to occur overnight on Wednesday, January 3 through Thursday, January 4. The shower is coming just a few weeks after the Geminids, one of the strongest meteor showers of 2023, with over 100 “shooting stars” observed. The best time to view the Quadrantids will be before moonrise, as there will be a first quarter moon during the peak night. This will be around midnight in the northern hemisphere. The radiant point of the Quadrantids, where the “shooting stars” will appear to emanate in the night sky, is the constellation Quadrans Muralis, which no longer officially exists. However, it’s a circumpolar constellation, meaning it’s “up” all night. It is located between the constellations of Bootes and Draco, near the end of the handle of the Big Dipper, according to

NC recognized for Law Enforcement Torch Run The Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics North Carolina (NC LETR) received a diamond level of excellence award by the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) International Executive Council for raising $1.5 million during the 2022 campaign year. The award was presented during the 2023 LETR International Conference, held in Chicago, Illinois, Oct. 28-30. The conference joined nearly 1,000 law enforcement personnel from around the world, representing the LETR leadership of their respective Special Olympics Programs. NC LETR had a delegation of 28 members, which included agency leaders, law enforcement officers, NC LETR Athlete Ambassadors and Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) staff. LETR is the largest grassroots public awareness and fundraising campaign for Special Olympics with more than 100,000 law enforcement participants around the world. Since its inception in 1981, LETR has raised over $1 billion and changed millions of attitudes. NC LETR involves more than 2,000 law enforcement officers representing more than 200 agencies. In addition to raising funds through collecting sponsorships, T-shirt and hat donations and unique fundraising events, the officers take part in relays spanning over 2,000 miles in 30 days to pass the Flame of Hope across the state, culminating in the

lighting of the cauldron to officially open the Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games in Raleigh. About the Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics North Carolina: The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is an international fundraising campaign for Special Olympics. Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition for more than 5.4 million children and adults around the world who have intellectual disabilities. Nearly 40,000 athletes participate in Special Olympics in North Carolina, making it one of the largest Special Olympics programs in the world. The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics North Carolina is officially endorsed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriff’s Association, the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association, the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, the National Association of School Resource Officers, the North Carolina Association of School Resource Officers, the North Carolina Department of Justice, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety and the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. clubhouse for potato soup, vegetable beef soup, cornbread and homemade desserts. McMahan made vanilla pound cake with icing, Coca Cola cake and apple cake. Club members Steve and Lois Dimsdale brought hot dogs and chili on Friday. On Saturday morning, Doris was joined on site by Cheryl Austin, club president. Social distancing and mask wearing were observed at all times. Doris is a chapter member of the community club that was formed in the mid-1950s. She looks forward to the day members can come back together. Prior to building the clubhouse, members met at another location for a couple of years, she said. Nancy joined the club with her parents when she was about five years old and remembers the fun times meeting there with other children of the community and nearby rural communities. “Up until COVID we had quarterly meetings and pot luck or covered dish dinners about once a quarter,’ Nancy said. As the age or the roof caught up with the club, leaking became a problem in several areas of the clubhouse. Club members began hosting spaghetti dinners and having yard sales to raise money to repair the roof. Even during that time buckets were placed strategically throughout the building to catch the water. “I raised about $600 one time by myself,” a proud Doris spoke up. “We used the money we raised to get the roof done,” she said.

Following the leadership of Bossman Billy (Honeycutt), far left, Women Roofers on the job. As the money was being raised, Doris said she contacted Laura Hodge, a member of Women Roofers and a pharmacist at the Medicine Box in nearby Rutherfordton, inquiring about possible help from the group. “We had heard about the good work of the Women Roofers,” Doris explained. Hodge said she immediately contacted Billy Honeycutt and he and fellow roofer Nell Bovender began the discussions. “They (club) raised the funds and we agreed to do the work,” Honeycutt said. Years ago when the Women Roofers were organized, the women and Honeycutt roofed the Mt. Vernon Community Clubhouse after the community raised the money for supplies. “At that time we had just begun and a group came to help us,” Nell said. “They probably knew more about roofing at that time than we did” Bovender said If there is a request for a community roofing project and the money can be raised, the group will consider the job, Bovender said. There have been times when community groups will not only raise money for materials but have also paid the roofers for the work. The money went back into the Women Roofers coffers to roof other homes. Honeycutt said the group never gets caught up with its long list of roofing projects. “There is always a need,” he said. The Piedmont-Pleasant Hill Clubhouse features a flat roof on the back side of the

building and that was new to the group. Honeycutt taught the roofers what to do and the job was done in two days. “At some time they will have to add something to the flat roof...We stopped the leak,” he said. As the roofers worked, there was talk from members of hopefully getting together for the annual Christmas dinner in 2021. The 2020 event was canceled because of COVID. The gatherings will all depend on the health of the County, State and Nation. “Doris always brought gifts for all the children,” Mae said of past Christmas parties. Mae McMahan remembers being a part of the community club also as a teenager and it was a “hang-out” spot for teens on Friday nights. There was a shuffle board almost the length of the clubhouse and there were other games. “It was a fun time,” Mae said. There was music, but dancing was never allowed. Nancy remembers children from all across the area gathering at the clubhouse to play the Piedmont-Pleasant Hill children. “The clubhouse was the heart of the community,” Nancy said. It was the setting for community parties, wedding and anniversary receptions. But when the two community churches - Piedmont and Pleasant Hill - both built fellowship halls, more events were held there.

Neighborhood Spring Clean Up opening this summer The City of Kings Mountain will be offering a free pick-up service for trash, junk, and litter the week of April 5-9. This does not include items such as furniture, mattresses, batteries, electronic equipment, or paint cans containing any amount of liquified paint. Please do not bring these items from inside the

home or other buildings to be collected. Please note that if you do place unapproved items on the curb, a $20 fee per truck load will be required to be paid prior to the City removing these items. The Catawba Nation announced Friday it will fast-track the opening of the Catawba Two Kings Casino Resort project in Kings Mountain by opening a “prelaunch” facility this summer with 500 slot machines. The pre-launch facility, which will be constructed using prefabricated modular structures, will provide an initial opportunity for patrons to game with limited food & beverage and other guest amenities. “With the completion of our compact with the State of North Carolina, the

Catawba Nation is eager to open the casino as quickly as possible to begin bringing economic benefits and jobs to the state and region,” Catawba Chief Bill Harris said. “We’re working with Delaware North, our consultant on the Catawba Two Kings Casino Resort project, as well as our developer, Skyboat Gaming, to make that happen by opening what we are calling a ‘pre-launch’ facility this summer.” An introductory phase of the full casino is still planned and will feature an additional 1,300 slot machines. It will

be a permanent structure that will become part of the full casino. Its construction is expected to take about a year. “It makes sense to have the temporary pre-launch facility to start, and it will continue to operate during the construction of the introductory phase and possibly subsequent phases,” said Brian Hansberry, president of Delaware North’s gaming business. “It gives us a place to teach incoming staff and accommodates people in the region who are anxious to start gaming this summer.” The 17-acre casino site

off Dixon School Road in Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, is near Interstate 85 and about 35 miles west of Charlotte. The total $273 million casino resort project is expected to create 2,600 permanent jobs at full buildout and thousands of construction jobs in the region. “This project will prove to be a long-lasting and sustainable economic engine for the residents of Cleveland County, we are excited about the expedited timeline” said Cleveland County Commissioner Johnny Hutchins. Bin Raiders purchases inventory in lots and passes the savings on to their customers. Much of the inventory items are Amazon returns or overstock. Most items are in the original packaging. “Sometimes we get an item wrapped in bubble wrap and we don’t know what is inside. I’ve had customers find cell phones and Fitbit watches that way,” Hale said. When asked why he decided to open a store, Hale answered without hesitation as he pointed to his son, Lee. “I started the store for

at school. That is not what I want.,” Hale said. Hale got the idea of opening a discount store in Kings Mountain while shopping in similar stores in other communities. However, Kings Mountain did not have this type of store. ‘I just observed how they did things, how they priced items and when they brought out more inventory. Then, I went online and found other people who were doing the same thing and they shared how they were doing it. Later, I learned how to buy lots online and it all came together from there.” Once he got his plan formalized, Hale reached out to Dan Potter, his soccer coach and friend from high school, asking him to help getting See BIN RAIDERS, Page 5A

The Kings Mountain Ministerial Association will be leading in an Easter Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday, April 4 at 7:00 a.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery. The service will be held around the large white cross in the cemetery. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be moved to Eastside Baptist Church, 308 York Road, Kings Mountain. If the event is held inside, everyone is requested to wear a mask. The Easter Sunrise message will be delivered by Pastor Ron Caulder from

Article Provided By: Jean Gordon Three members of the PiedmontPleasant Hill Community Club sat at long white-clothed tables inside an unlighted clubhouse recently reminiscing about the days of the award-winning community club and how the clubhouse was the center of the community. They discussed the efforts in saving the more than 60-year-old building and community club. As the ladies quietly talked inside, there were rumblings up on the roof of the 1957 building. The Women Roofers were busy taking off shingles and preparing to recover the flat roof. The project was begun in the fall of 2019 with a commitment to complete flat part of the roof in 2020. But COVID-19 changed everything and roofing came to a halt for the nationally known Women Roofers. Finally during the weekend of March 11-13, led by Bossman Billy Honeycutt, the roofing project was completed, the yard cleaned up and members are now ready for the next improvement projects and hopefully a covered dish dinner in the future. Although three days were scheduled to complete the job, the roofers were finished Friday afternoon. Saturday morning was used for a few minor finishing tasks and final clean-up. Club members Nancy Koone, 70, Doris Keever, 90, and Mae McMahan, 76, met the roofers at the clubhouse each morning. They helped prepare delicious lunch meals for the roofers and around noon Thursday and Friday everyone gathered inside the
