A YEAR IN REVIEW

NSP IS

BACK!

For those who don’t know, NSP’s 2014-15 season was a year that wasn’t suppose to happen. On November 1, 2008, NSP was officially beginning a 6-month hiatus, which lasted almost SIX years. With little support from parents, or a supportive staff in place, we had closed the organization with a plan to restructure a new team for the 2009 season. It was not to be. A small handful of remaining members had committed to small events, and through previous commitments, NSP remained a silent partner in several events, with no official membership. In 2010, a discussion was made to close the company for good, however the spark was lit with the addition of Shaliya Parris, then followed by Julie Garrison and Cassidy Rivas in 2013. With five-plus years of restructuring, NSP embarked on seeking a rehearsal space, eventually returning to Brooklyn Public Library Bedford Branch in September, 2014. A membership of six including Olivia Gallimore, Karina Heath, Simoya Martin, and Briahna Smith, the team began sessions in October. Soon as rehearsals became consistent, the first goal set was presenting a fashion show as part of the International African Arts Festival in July. Only by social media and word of mouth, we managed to build a team weekly, as the group grew to 16 members during the spring. To develop self-esteem and confidence into each member, we watched the team bond together and grow at each photo shoot and weekly rehearsal. SHOWTIME! June through September would prove to be the crowning achievement as NSP took on a total of 14 events, promoting, performing, and working tirelessly with enthusiasm, character, and professionalism. This fall, we come back with new beginnings, a fresh start, and invite our supporters to get on board and watch our young superstars shine.

WELCOME TO OUR MAGAZINE! Our official magazine is here! In recognition of our 32nd anniversary, we launch this online version to give you an insight on our activities, programs, and members. Celebrate us as we bring to you some of the behind the scenes info on NSP, and highlight our kids, and most recent activities. Learn about us quarterly, and 3

you may also submit your suggestions, as to how to offer additional support to our youth.

A YEAR IN REVIEW Greetings from the CEO! Happy 32nd Anniversary to our NSP Family. I’m happy to finally bring you the official NSP Magazine. This project is nine years in the making, as I had hope to give our youth the opportunity to share their creativity with the world. The magazine is a work

in progress, and we’re using this as platform to share good news about what our young people can accomplish. Though NSP is based in Brooklyn, some of our experiences have taken us beyond the NYC area, and our magazine is open to discuss youth issues beyond our territory. NSP is a free pro-

gram open for all youth. We welcome you to share in our successes and accomplishments, and invite you to participate in the growth of this project. Thank You! Wayne Winston, Manager

A YEAR IN REVIEW

Amirah came to NSP in early, 2015. With her grandmother in tow, she stole the hearts of all the NSP members from Day 1. Just turning 4 this November, Amirah is living more than just dreams, she’s enjoying her childhood on HER terms.

progress: “My name is Gigi Holmes, my granddaughter, Amirah, started with NSP in March, 2015, she loves it and so do I. Amirah is doing and learning so much and it teaches her so much. Amirah is doing modeling and dancing as well as other events. When we did the table exhibits we got to talk with people telling them what NSP is all about trying to sign people up and i really enjoy what i do, its very rewarding in so many ways and even Amirah has gotten comfortable giving out the flyers. I had a great time doing the parades it was a wonderful experience doing this. My granddaughter loves to model, and dance. We also have a wonderful time meeting new people and we feel like family. It’s a beautiful thing to feel like this. She likes to perform, and love taking pictures, This year alone, she has performed two fashion shows, two parades, and performing dance solos at local community events throughout the city. FOR HER TO BE THE BEST SHE CAN BE, I’M GLAD WE FOUND NSP. NSP IS SO POSITIVE AND FULL OF ENERGY , AND HAVE GOOD ROLE MODELS FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTER AMIRAH.

A YEAR IN REVIEW Get To Know…. Tiffany Parker, NSP Makeup Artist Interview by Shaquira Walcott She graduated a D1 track star from Long Island University, and Tiffany Parker came to NSP in April, 2014 looking to expand and share her talents, started modeling, and joining the staff as creative director and makeup artist. We asked her about how she got started last year. Q. What inspired you to start doing make-up? A. I was a tomboy growing up, but when I got older, I got more into fashion and became interested in creating the different kooks seen on the runway and magazines. Q. What is your favorite makeup look? A. A natural look, something that enhances the clients’ natural beauty. Q. Do any celebrity inspire your looks? A. Most people look up to Kim Kardashian’s look and contour, but I like Beyonce’s natural yet polished look. Q What inspired you to be a model? A. My mom used to model. She did a show with RuPaul and was an extra in the movie “The Mirror Has Two Faces”. She use to bring me to her shows and I guess that started it all. I also loved to watch America’s Next Top Model.

A YEAR IN REVIEW RUNWAY TALK: What Makes A Photo Shoot Work With 34 years of experience in photography, 22 have primarily been concentrated on the models of NSP. Besides sports, concerts, weddings, and parties, shooting models covers 50% of my work, as members come and go like a revolving door all year around. Why are NSP models good at what they do? Three reasons: One, it starts with the personality of the model. Often, kids who model come in with tons of curiosity. Hopefully, it’s the child’s decision that he/she wants to model/act. The personality must show in a good photo. The child/teen should feel comfortable in front of the camera. From that personality, comes the Confidence; Two, the willingness to invest, This is not overnight success. Between photo shoots and auditions, it may take years for a performer to finally gain a spot on the BIG STAGE. However, they must understand that it takes MONEY and TIME that must be invested in this. He/She should also convey to he parents if this is something he/she wants to do as hobby, or as a profession. Have PATIENCE; Three, being exposed to the right people who are also willing to invest their time

(and money) into the artist. From this, business relationships are developed, and at the same time, the mentoring, encouragement, and teamwork all gels together.

- Have extra pairs of shoes on hand (including one black pair). Hair/Make-up: - Little or no make-up (NSP has No make-up rule for girls under 14) Look as natural as you can. - No excess jewelry (small earrings only if possible) - No scarves, no bandanas. Avoid clothing with characters and sayings. - Hair should be in a style that’s manageable, easy to obtain and available if used in pictures to obtain work. Try to avoid more than one color in hair (unless natural changes)

Overall, there are other strategies that can work. For NSP artists, these three play a key part with our members’ current success. It’s a team effort, and we’d like to share some of these tips as to how to make your photos come out great: Outfits: - Casual (3 outfits): Include at least one (1) for an outdoor shoot - Sports (2): Have at least one (1) for outdoor shoot - Dress (2) Business (shirt/blouse and skirt/pants) or 1 solid colored dress w/ accessories - Formal (cultural or suit) - Have at least one (1) solid color suit (Male).

- Extensions/Weaves should be avoided unless kept on long-term basis. Remember the photos you give to a producer/ casting director is the look they expect to see at showtime. Portfolio Tips:  Complete book should have at least 10-12 photo displaying a variety of poses, outfits, including at least one (1) headshot.  Extra headshots with your name and contact information on it should be available to give to producers/directors to have on file.  Resume should also be available with listing of completed work experience, dating as far back as possible for children/ teens; older models (16+up) should date work at least five (5) years. Now my OF N.S.P. “ show when youngest daughter Zaneya and she was five my niece, Aniyah have joined years old. Simply amazing!” Most of Shaliya’s work fully kicked in during the last two years. As NSP restructured its programs, she remained loyal and committed. Completing five fashion shows this past year, she’s been compared to supermodel, Beverly Johnson. NSP sees Shaliya moving to top model status, still remaining humble, and being the best role model for her little sister and cousin. Before all that, education comes first. Ready to graduate in 2016, college becomes the next phase in her life, and she can rest assure that her NSP has her back, 110%. 9

Simoya Martin Simoya joined the NSP family in August 2014. With a full season in training, Moya made her modeling debut at Harlem Week’s 2015 Back To School Fashion, and went on to York, Pennsylvania to model at Educated Voices’ York Soul Showcase in September. This season, she’s full of confidence, and now ready to take on her next challenge: 8th Grade Senior! She talks about preparing for her next step in life. I'm currently an 8th grade senior. I'm really excited as this will be my last year in junior high school. Since September, I have been preparing myself for High school. In September, I went to a high school fair. I felt like it was helpful because it gave me an idea of what I would like to major and activities I would like to do. I am also preparing myself by doing all my class work & homework, studying to get good grades on my quizzes. Already this school year, I was selected as “Student of the Month”, along with 18 other students representatives. I felt that I’d earned it because of my good grades, attendance and good leadership. By continuing these habits and tools, this would lead me into a excellent high school that would lead me towards my career. Keep making us proud Moya! 14

Kenyetta Smith, 15. I aspire to be an entertainer. I want to be an influential character by using my talents in modeling, acting, and dancing to speak to people everywhere. Next year, I'd like to develop my portfolio and resume with as many different shows, styles, and looks as possible. Hi, I'm Aniyah Allen and I am 10 years old. I joined NSP just a few months ago and I feel very comfortable with the program. So far, I have had about four photo shoots and was in one fashion show. It was really fun. So far, I have had a great experience being in the company . Hi, my name is Zaneya Raymond. I am 9 years old. It is an honor to be in the modeling program. We have been in great fashion shows. We go to the library every saturday and practice. I want to stay in this company for as long as I can. Hi. I am Azizah and I am 16 years old. I have recently joined this past June and I felt completely welcomed and I expect to grow in NSP with a better sense of who I am, my strengths and my weaknesses. Over the past few photo shoots and gatherings I've attended, I’ve been able to see an increase in regards to my self esteem. I’m quite grateful to be in the company and I thank Mr. Winston for being a great manager. Hi, my name is Stefania and I’m 17. I joined NSP October 17th at their Open House and I’ve felt very welcomed when I came to this program. I’ve already completed a photo shoot, have a potential modeling job in the works, and just got my final headshot. This experience in just 2 weeks makes me excited for what's to come.
