A Community Partnership
WELCOME
Kelsey Robinov Director of Development
Philanthropic support from the Waynflete community is essential to the continued strength of our school— donations create opportunities for our students, affirm our mission, and ensure accessibility for the most qualified student body. Every year, Waynflete benefits from gifts that support current operations through the Waynflete Fund, capital giving for facilities and endowment, and deferred and planned giving for future programs. Each form of support, at every level, ensures the short- and long-term health of our school. During the 2020–2021 school year, our community benefited from $2.3 million in new gifts and pledged support. This included annual giving of over $1 million, which included a record-breaking $760,000 in unrestricted funds for the Waynflete Fund. Over $102,000 was received to complete the $250,000 education leadership matching grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation, which the school received in 2019 to support Third Thought Initiatives for Civic Engagement (waynflete.org/tt).

Over $1.2 million in gifts and commitments supported our athletics facilities, enabling us to break ground this fall on an artificial turf field at our Fore River Campus. Of these gifts for athletics, almost $100,000 supported fundraising for a crew boathouse at our Commercial Street dock location. In addition to new fundraising initiatives, gifts received from pledged commitments for endowment and our new Lower School through the Building on Our Strengths campaign totaled over $375,000. As we move into the new school year, we remain deeply grateful to our community for partnering with us and affirming the work we do every day with students. We would not be the school we are without you.

Every Student Needs More This Year
Maine schools made different decisions on how to best bring back students. We did what we have always done: more. More challenging, engaging, hands-on learning in small classes. More individual attention and personalized instruction from trusted teachers. And more time to connect, safely and in person, with friends. “Waynflete was able to offer in-person learning all last year through Grade 6, and for all grades by spring 2021, because so many of the precautions needed—like small, closeknit classes, personalized instruction from teachers, and outdoor experiences—were already how we teach,” explains Geoff Wagg, Head of School. “I am so proud of how our faculty, staff, and students kept up with our challenging curriculum and kept a strong sense of community throughout the pandemic. It took hard work and ingenuity, and it was worth it.” Anne Hopkins, Lower School Director, agrees. “At some point during all the uncertainty of COVID, I realized that what we were doing wasn’t really new to Waynflete. We focused on our fundamentals, and it worked.”
Seeing the Whole Child “We hear a lot of concern about so-called lost years’” Anne affirms. “We can work with any motivated, engaged, curious student. Wherever they are right now, that’s where we will start.” The blended classrooms in Lower School support this holistic approach. The twoyear age range means children are always surrounded by friends working at their growth edges. “Seeing everyone progress at different rates is more reassuring,” Anne explains. “And seeing the collective effort everyone makes to master new skills is more inspiring.” “We are also able to offer more understanding,” adds Divya Muralidhara, Middle School Director. “More awareness of what different students have experienced—disruptions and stress, anxiety about vulnerable family members, social isolation, or academic disconnection. We want to understand and recognize students for who they are and what they have overcome.” Small Class Sizes Waynflete knows that some students did better last year because social distancing forced their school to offer smaller classes for a year. And once you have seen how a small class can support all kinds of learners, it can be hard to go back to large classrooms. “Smaller classrooms are absolutely essential to the way we teach at Waynflete,” says Divya.
3
“Our small classes offer really warm welcomes!” Anne adds.
Director. “Waynflete has always seen diversity as an essential component of excellence.”
Personalized Instruction With some of the smallest class sizes in the region, we support the most powerful element of a Waynflete education: personalized learning. If a child felt lost or left behind during online classes, they will feel seen and supported at Waynflete.
Our curriculum explores complex subjects through many different lenses and draws on a wide range of cultural traditions and influences. Our diverse classes offer many different life experiences and perspectives and honor all voices. And several school-sponsored and student-led initiatives provide ongoing forums for students to work through key issues.
“When you spend more time working with students, they make more progress,” Divya explains. “When concepts, lessons, and projects are configured around their needs and aptitudes, they get it faster and go further.” Having everyone together on campus amplifies that energy. Our students know they will struggle sometimes to reach goals. They also know they have personalized support. Diversity and Community COVID was not the only challenge students of all ages grappled with last year. The protests, reckoning, and reflection sparked by racist incidents across our country were felt right here in Maine. Waynflete teachers processed these agonizing events with students in thoughtful and age-appropriate ways and recommitted to doing the hard work of building and sustaining our diverse, equitable, and inclusive community. “Making Waynflete work for everybody is what we do,” says Lowell Libby, former Upper School
Joy The last two years have been heavy ones, and even young children have felt the weight. Lifting it has been a focus across all Waynflete divisions. We work very hard to make sure that Waynflete is a place where students want to be. “We are big believers in the power of play,” Anne says. “Play is how children learn—and learn to love school.” “Middle School starts the year with a week of community-building activities,” adds Divya. “The fun we have during those first few days is the foundation we build upon in class.” “One of my favorite experiences is watching a serious classroom discussion suddenly break into laughter,” says Lowell. “You can feel how comfortable students are with each other and themselves and with big, complex ideas when that happens. At Waynflete, it happens a lot.” 4
DIRECT AND CRITICAL IMPACT
Annual Giving
Charitable gifts to the Waynflete Fund are a critical part of the school’s annual operating budget. Income generated by fundraising, revenue from tuition and programs, and distributions from the school’s endowment together support Waynflete’s annual operating budget. Tax-deductible gifts to the Waynflete Fund are put to use immediately and have a direct and critical impact on every student’s experience. Fueling Our Mission Waynflete’s mission drives everything that we do, and it is what makes a Waynflete education exceptional. A for-profit business can cut costs through consolidation and streamlining. To employ these strategies at a mission-driven school like Waynflete would require reducing the size of our faculty or combining classrooms. This would diminish our ability to provide the individual attention and quality of education that everyone expects for a Waynflete student.
Making a Waynflete education affordable for as many families as possible is also a key tenet of the school’s philosophy. The increase in tuition rates that would be necessary to fully fund our current program would further limit the number of families who could afford to attend. This decrease in enrollment would have a negative effect on the number of programs we could continue to offer. Increasing Opportunities Every dollar contributed to the Waynflete Fund helps ensure that our students have increased opportunities in the sciences, the arts, athletics, outdoor education, and service learning; that the school has a robust financial aid budget to enroll qualified students; that our faculty salaries are more competitive; and that our teachers have the professional development opportunities and classroom resources they need.
The Waynflete Fund, is the foundation of our fundraising efforts. For a mission-driven institution like Waynflete, annual gifts provide opportunities for students beyond what is possible with tuition alone. 5
Demonstrating Confidence We ask everyone to consider a donation at a level that feels personally significant and meaningful. Some donors give $25, while others give $25,000. Participation by everyone, at any level, is important. High participation rates demonstrate confidence in our mission and help us secure funding from other sources, such as foundations.
Tax-deductible gifts to the Waynflete Fund are put to use immediately and have a direct and critical impact on every student’s experience.

PHILANTHROPY IN ACTION
Lower School Outdoor Spaces
After completing the Lower School renovation and new construction in 2018, our attention quickly turned to outdoor spaces. We wondered: Could imaginative outside play help reinforce the curriculum and support our teaching philosophy? Could the values of cooperation and collaboration be practiced both inside and outside the classroom? Waynflete engaged landscape designer Sashie Misner, who is known for her work on children’s gardens and play spaces at Fort Williams and Maine Coastal Botanical Gardens, to begin work on our upper playground. Sashie’s graduate thesis focused on “learning through play,” and her concern with designing for the whole child is evident in all her work. Sashie considers both fine and gross motor skills in her designs, believing that both can complement the creative and cognitive growth taking place in the classroom. She strives to encourage instinct development in children— helping them learn how to move through space without an overabundance of cues. Sashie avoids compact layouts, knowing that kids get more physical activity in spaces that promote play across the natural landscape. She also builds in varying levels of challenge. “I always
7
include an easy way out,” she says. “Children can choose between climbing down a wall or following an easier path. Some days you feel like doing it; some days you don’t!” If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that children long for a wide variety of outside activities. The values of cooperation, collaboration, and creative play that are reinforced in the Waynflete classroom can be practiced outside as well. Our youngest learners have benefited from Sashie’s upper playground design for three years, and her expertise will be invaluable when we turn our attention to the larger lower playground. “Sashie really gets who we are,” says Lower School Director Anne Hopkins. “Like us, she wholeheartedly believes that this diverse space opens up rich opportunities for creativity.”
This diverse space opens up rich opportunities for creativity.

ADVANCE TRANSFORMATIVE GOALS
Capital Giving
Capital campaigns are transformative, advancing goals set in the Board of Trustees’ strategic plan—the culmination of a thorough examination of the school’s strengths, accomplishments, challenges, and resources.
Recent capital campaigns reflect the careful stewardship and vision of Waynflete leadership and the generosity of its community.
Like all independent schools, Waynflete periodically embarks on a multiyear capital fundraising campaign. Campaigns generate a capital sum rather than revenue for the school, typically for facilities and endowment growth.

Capital Giving
The Waynflete endowment provides a steady source of income that reduces our reliance on tuition, helps ensure financial stability, and advances our mission for many years to come. Endowment income contributes to annual expenses, either for the general operating budget (including financial aid and faculty enrichment) or for donordesignated programs.
Many of Waynflete’s named endowments receive ongoing support from our community. We remain grateful to those generous donors who have recognized the importance of a robust endowment in strengthening our future.

LOWELL LIBBY ENDOWMENT for Developing Youth Leaders After 30 years of dedicated service to Waynflete, Upper School Director Lowell Libby retired at the conclusion of the 2020–21 academic year. In appreciation of Lowell’s many contributions to the school and to ensure that civics education and dialogue are an essential part of Waynflete for future generations, a new endowment was recently established in his name. The Lowell Libby Endowment for Developing Youth Leaders will help enable Waynflete to continue its pioneering work in creating, implementing, and sharing a unique set of schoolbased programs for empowering youth. These programs help youth reflect on their own experiences, walk in the shoes of others, and work together on issues that matter most to them. The endowment will support Waynflete’s efforts to develop Maine’s youth leaders—who will then help strengthen democratic society—and will serve as a catalyst for this work across the country. A LASTING LEGACY
Planned Giving
Friends of Waynflete who make provisions for the school in their estate plans are recognized as members of the Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle. In 1986, Ruth Cook Hyde, Class of 1910, made one of the first bequests to Waynflete when she left her home to the school. Her former home, where she lived while she was a student at Waynflete, is now Cook Hyde House—one of the Middle School buildings. The Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle was formed in 2003 to honor Ms. Hyde’s generosity and lasting gift, and to acknowledge others who make provisions for Waynflete in their own estate plans. Over the years, Waynflete has received a number of planned gifts from alumni, friends, and other members of the community. We would like to express our deep gratitude to all who are making a planned gift to the school. Using tax-savvy giving methods benefits both donors and the school. Philanthropic gifts of all kinds help Waynflete attract and retain exceptional teachers, maintain a vibrant community of qualified students, and provide learning spaces that best support the educational programming of each division of the school. There are many ways to make a meaningful philanthropic impact on Waynflete students and faculty. We are happy to work with you to create a giving plan that works for your family.

My Waynflete education began in the seventh grade and continued through high school, where I experienced the brilliance of teachers like Dean Hewes and Miss Pillsbury. I felt fully prepared for college and had the confidence that I could tackle whatever life offered. And I have, in fact, had an “abundant life,” to partially quote the phrase that graced the old Founder’s Hall library (“May They Have Life and Have It Abundantly”). Upon marriage, living in upstate New York and then Miami, I longed to return to Maine so that our young daughters could have the Waynflete experience that I had been fortunate to have. Alison graduated in 1988, and Christine was part of the class of 1992 for six years. All three of us cherish the experiences, memories, and friendships made there. Waynflete provides an environment in which a student can thrive and be the best they can be—scholastically, athletically, creatively, and socially.

Waynflete’s mission calls on us to encourage “responsible and caring participation in the world.” This commitment to service has long been reflected in the lives and accomplishments of our many alumni. In 2019, the Waynflete Board of Trustees created the Klingenstein Award to honor alumni who have had broad and positive impact at local, regional, national, and/or international levels. The Klingenstein Award was named for Patricia Davis Klingenstein ’47 in recognition of her work as an education advocate, devoted community leader, volunteer, and philanthropist.
Waynflete’s mission calls on us to encourage “responsible and caring participation in the world.” This commitment to service has long been reflected in the lives and accomplishments of our many alumni. Rachel Talbot Ross ’78 is a ninth-generation Mainer who has dedicated her career to public service and social justice. In addition to serving as the City of Portland’s Director of Equal Opportunity and Multicultural Affairs for more than two decades, she led the NAACP in Maine and founded several nonprofit organizations, including Maine Black Community Development, Maine Freedom Trails, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellows. Rachel chaired the Maine State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights as well as the African American Collection of Maine housed at the University of Southern Maine. Rachel is currently serving her third term in the Maine House. As a lawmaker, Rachel has worked extensively on justice reform and has shaped critical conversations about equity for all Mainers. She serves the Democratic caucus as assistant House majority leader and is the first and only Black woman elected to the Maine Legislature and to legislative leadership.
T H E D R A K E AWA R D In 1976, Dr. and Mrs. Emerson Drake, parents of four Waynflete students, received a special honor for their service to Waynflete. Emerson Drake had served on the Board of Trustees for 16 years (the last several as president), while his wife, Ping, was equally active within the school community. They were recognized by the Board of Trustees with the award that now bears their name. In presenting the first Drake Award, board member David Osgood said, “It is our hope that this award will serve not only as a lasting reminder of what the Drakes have done for Waynflete but also as an inspiration to others to do likewise.” Nancy and Vin Veroneau became Waynflete parents 21 years ago when their eldest child, Andrew ’07, started sixth grade at the school. Andrew’s seven siblings soon followed: Margaret ’08, Joseph ’11, Catherine ’13, Martha ’13, Anne ’16, John ’18, and Michael ’21. Vin served on the school’s Board of Trustees, from 2011–2014 and from 2017–2020, twice holding the office of treasurer. Both Nancy and Vin served in many volunteer roles over the years, but they are perhaps best known for the extraordinary contributions they have made to Waynflete’s athletic program. One of several individuals who nominated Nancy and Vin noted, “The Veroneaus value a strong education, community service, and finding your place in the world to serve others, and they have inculcated this ethic by their example in all of their children and the many Waynflete families that have had the pleasure to interact with them...anyone associated with Waynflete knows of their immense contributions to the school and our community, and the generosity, kindness, and decency that is their hallmark.”

Third Thought Third Thought Initiatives for Civic Engagement was established with the financial support of a $250,000 matching grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation. Through a variety of youthcentered initiatives, Third Thought channels the energy and capacity of young people and supports their development as agents of change in a nation that suffers from divisions that paralyze our democratic processes. Third Thought’s work is based on the belief that: • diversity of thought and experience is a source of wisdom that should be valued rather than feared. • young people have the desire to be civically engaged members of our communities. • young people can be trusted to lead conversations that bridge the divides of the most pressing issues of our day. • young people have the capacity to work creatively and collaboratively across differences. John Holdridge serves as director of Third Thought Initiatives for Civic Engagement. In addition to working with students and teachers on campus, John is responsible for The Can We? Project, an initiative that provides opportunities for students throughout Maine to practice the art of dialogue across differences and to creatively collaborate with peers on shared goals. Originally a weekend retreat, The Can We? Project team is currently working on a five-year plan to build the capacity of teachers and youth leaders to facilitate work in Maine schools, with the hope of serving as a national model. The group’s first national pilot will take place at Georgetown Day School in Washington, DC, November 2021. 26

“We all had different experiences at Waynflete and feel various levels of connection 20 years after graduation. One thing that we can agree on is that our teachers went above and beyond to support our academic growth. We left Waynflete with an incredible education, thanks to our energetic, committed, and passionate faculty.” Each year, alumni honor their time at Waynflete by supporting the Waynflete Fund. During a reunion year, many alumni choose to commemorate their experience with special gifts to support the school. As a way to celebrate their 20th reunion, the Class of 2001 chose to honor faculty with a special fundraising effort that raised over $10,000 for the Waynflete Fund. Special thanks to Reunion Chairs Gretchen Boulos ’01 and Carey Robertson Evans ’01 for their leadership in this successful fundraising effort. 37

“This space, at the center of the city, was available at an incredibly opportune moment, and we were thrilled to support the students and teachers at Waynflete as they continued learning during the pandemic. Not only did the Hub have a direct impact on students; it was also a gift to the community to have such an example of hopefulness in our midst.” We are grateful to Tim Soley and Maria Gallace for their donation of the first floor of One Canal Plaza to be used as Waynflete’s Remote Learning Hub during the 2020–2021 academic year. At the Hub, students had the opportunity to collaborate with their peers, develop relationships with the team of mentors, and participate in remote learning. 40

G I F TS I N KIN D Lisa Eaton “Our family decision to send Grace to Waynflete as a freshman was one of the smartest investments we have ever made. It was a serious stretch for us, financially in particular. But it is also a decision that, every single day, we are grateful to have made, particularly now that she has graduated. We can see how well prepared she is for college academics and mature, communicative relationships with professors. We aren’t able to do much in the way of financial donations in gratitude for this transformative high school experience, but I was delighted to be able to provide for the school something that was specific to Waynflete and actually filled a school need.” After pivoting from making men’s accessories to include nonmedical face masks in her line of handmade goods, Waynflete parent Lisa Eaton of Bowtie.com made and donated masks for several Waynflete events, including the 2020 and 2021 Commencement ceremonies and multiple theater productions. We are grateful for Lisa’s response to the school’s needs with her gifts-in-kind donations!

Nancy Tetrault left an awe-inspiring, 40-year legacy of outstanding teaching and service to Waynflete when she passed away in March 2021. Over the decades, “Mrs. T” demonstrated time and again how much of an extraordinary colleague, friend, and mentor she was to those who worked with her in our Lower School. No-nonsense and filled with wit, humor, and caring, Nancy was beloved by generations of students and their parents. In her 2020 retirement announcement, we wrote: “Thank you, Nancy, for all you have done for our school and for students past and present. We will miss you tremendously. May the seas be calm and the wind at your back.” 42
MI VA SSI L UES ON Waynflete’s mission is to engage the imagination and intellect of our students, to guide them toward self-governance and self-knowledge, and to encourage their responsible and caring participation in the world. Our aim is to provide a program that combines security with challenge, playful exploration with rigorous expectation, and range of experience with depth of inquiry.

Statement of Beliefs We are devoted to the healthy development of the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Believing that young people are naturally curious about the world, we engage our students with a rich variety of academic and cocurricular experiences, allowing them to explore their own interests, talents, and ideas. Learning flourishes when students are challenged to discover, to create, to take intellectual risks, and to invest themselves passionately in areas both familiar and new. We believe that diversity is one of the conditions of excellence for our school. We value the individuality of our students, recognizing that each will take a different path through life. We also believe that every person can be a responsible member of the community and that this sense of responsibility deepens when we treat our students and one another with trust and respect. It is out of respect for each individual that true community arises—a community of diverse human beings who value the challenges of honoring differences and resolving conflict. We believe that personal freedom and mutual support should be tightly interwoven, and that working with others is as important as striving to achieve one’s own goals. By making these connections, we create an atmosphere in which self-confidence, resilience, and strong relationships can grow. We believe that our responsibility as educators is to collaborate with one another, with our students, with their families, and with the wider community as we strive to fulfill the mission of our school.
Statement of Goals Our goals include a commitment: to nurture in students a sense of wonder and a lifelong love of learning; to promote an appreciation for the liberal arts and sciences, while teaching skills of quantitative reasoning, critical and reflective thought, and aesthetic understanding; to develop a school community enriched by cross-age connections, interdisciplinary opportunities, and an understanding of the range and richness of human history and culture; to help students adopt healthy values and acquire new skills in an ever-changing world; to encourage students’ individual initiative and active responsibility for their own learning; to guide students to become active participants in the community as well as stewards of the environment; to be a bias-free community that embraces diversity and fosters a positive identity for all persons; to support students in developing a strong framework for ethical decision-making; and to inspire students to strive for excellence and integrity in all aspects of their lives.
