2023–24 Philanthropy at Waynflete

Page 1

WELCOME

Each year, I have the privilege of thanking our generous donors who help make a Waynflete education possible for our current and future students. We would not be the school we are without the annual philanthropic support of our community.

The goal set by the board of trustees for unrestricted support through The Waynflete Fund in 2023–24 was $720,000. More than $742,000 was donated to sustain our programs, faculty, tuition assistance, and operations. An additional $243,000 in gifts was designated for specific programs or areas. Over $1,240,000 was received for capital projects and endowment. In total, the school was the recipient of more than $2,225,000 in critical and direct philanthropic support.

In the 2022–23 academic year, Waynflete invested in a long-term campus framework plan that will guide campus additions and renovations. This plan is intentional and inspirational, and it will elevate our programming in ways we can’t yet conceive. We are in the beginning stages of a fundraising effort for the first phase: building a Wellness and Athletics Center to replace our aging

gymnasium. There is broad agreement in our community that this is the appropriate next step for our school. Early pledges to the effort confirm that the time is now to improve our athletics facility and add a dedicated space for health and wellness. Head of School Geoff Wagg and I invite everyone in the Waynflete community to take the opportunity to learn more about the project as the campaign unfolds.

Whenever our community comes together to move our school forward purposefully—with programs and people at the forefront—we are successful. We are profoundly grateful for your partnership in advancing Waynflete’s mission.

With gratitude,

Ways of Giving

Philanthropic support—both for current operations through The Waynflete Fund and for capital priorities like the endowment— are critical for the educational experience we provide to all our students.

Year after year, unrestricted gifts through The Waynflete Fund provide critical operating support, while capital gifts enable the school to grow, innovate, and move forward.

WAYS OF GIVING

ANNUAL FUND

Direct and critical impact

The Waynflete Fund is the foundation of our fundraising efforts. For a mission-driven institution like Waynflete, annual gifts provide opportunities for students beyond what is possible through tuition alone.

Like nearly all independent schools, tuition at Waynflete does not fully cover the cost to educate a student. For the 2023–24 academic year, this “tuition gap” was $3,772 per student.

Fundraising, distribution from our endowment, and other income revenue fills this gap and maintains the Waynflete experience.

Every dollar contributed to The Waynflete Fund helps ensure that:

our students have increased opportunities in the sciences, the arts, athletics, outdoor education, and service learning.

the school has a robust financial aid budget to enroll qualified students.

we provide our faculty with more competitive salaries and the professional development and classroom resources they need.

WAYS OF GIVING

Waynflete has launched the most ambitious capital campaign in the school’s 126-year history. Waynflete Forward will reimagine our campus for the future, with new spaces that will match the strength and integrity of our programs and elevate opportunities for students and teachers alike. The campaign’s first priority is the construction of a state-of-the-art Wellness and Athletics Center, which will serve as the heart of the school’s holistic athletics, health, and wellness programs. Learn more at waynflete.org/wf-pph.

CAPITAL GIVING

Advancing transformative goals

Like all independent schools, Waynflete periodically embarks on multiyear capital fundraising campaigns or major gift initiatives. These efforts generate a capital sum rather than revenue for the school, typically for facilities and endowment growth.

Capital campaigns are transformative, advancing goals set in the board of trustees’ strategic plan—the culmination of a thorough examination of the school’s strengths, accomplishments, challenges, and resources. Recent capital fundraising efforts reflect the careful stewardship and vision of Waynflete leadership and the generosity of its community.

The Waynflete endowment provides a steady source of income that reduces our reliance on tuition, helps ensure financial stability, and advances our mission for many years to come. Endowment income helps offset annual expenses, either for the general operating budget (including financial aid and faculty enrichment) or for donor-designated programs. Many of Waynflete’s named endowments receive ongoing support from our community.

WAYS OF GIVING

PLANNED GIVING

Building a learning legacy

Friends of Waynflete who make provisions for the school in their estate plans are recognized as members of the Ruth Cook Hyde 1910 Circle.

The Circle honors the generosity of Ms. Hyde (class of 1910) and acknowledges others who make provisions for Waynflete in their own estate plans. Over the years, Waynflete has received a number of planned gifts from alumni, friends, and other members of the community. Using tax-savvy giving methods benefits both donors and the school, and there are many ways to make a meaningful philanthropic impact on Waynflete students and faculty. We are happy to work with you to create a legacy giving plan that works for your family.

Why We Give

For generations, Waynflete has been strengthened by the generosity of its community members. In the following pages, we invite you to hear directly from individuals who have chosen to support the school’s mission through philanthropic giving. These personal accounts offer insight into the diverse motivations of our many donors and the impact they hope to achieve through their contributions.

Dan Rocha GP’35, ’38

Supporting The Waynflete Fund is one of the most meaningful ways I can contribute to my grandchildren’s education and the wider school community where they learn and grow. For me, it’s about investing in both the people and the place that nurture Sonny’s and Mae’s curiosity, talents, and character. It’s about acknowledging the fact that my grandchildren wake up every morning looking forward to going to school and come home every afternoon excited to share what they have done.

My contribution is also a way of saying thank you to the dedicated teachers and staff who make the school such a warm and inspiring place. I believe in their mission, and I want to help ensure that future generations of students have the same rich and rewarding experiences. Giving to The Waynflete Fund is a chance to be a part of something bigger—something that extends far beyond Sonny’s and Mae’s time at the school. It’s a way to show my gratitude, pay it forward, and make a lasting difference for a community that means so much to my family.

“People often think that being philanthropic is only for the wealthy. They believe that if they can’t give at a high level, their gift can’t make a difference. Nothing could be further from the truth. Each one of us can be a philanthropist at whatever level feels right for us.”

What I know from working in independent schools for nearly 40 years is that, in every school, there is a gap between tuition and the cost of educating a child. Each donation, no matter the size, really does play a role in closing that gap and creating opportunities for students to explore their passions, develop critical skills, and build lifelong friendships.

People often think that being philanthropic is only for the wealthy. They believe that if they can’t give at a high level, their gift can’t make a difference. Nothing could be further from the truth. Each one of us can be a philanthropist at whatever level feels right for us. Philanthropy is not about the size of the gift. Philanthropy is about supporting an institution whose mission and goals align with your own.

“I believe in this school. Waynflete creates well-rounded, culturally sensitive, and open-minded individuals. I’m happy to see that it has become even more diverse over the years and that it continues to be a champion of accepting people of different backgrounds and beliefs.”

Emily Smaldon ’96

Hillman Norberg ’07

Hillman Norberg’s interest in global relations took root at an early age, due in part to childhood travels accompanying his parents on business trips. After earning a BA in international studies from Fordham University and a master’s degree in global policy from the University of Maine, he leveraged his expertise as a trade specialist at the Maine International Trade Center, focusing on assisting Maine companies with market expansion opportunities in Canada and beyond. Today, Hillman helps European companies establish North American operations through his work with a Dutch business development consultancy.

A Waynflete lifer, Hillman recalls the positive effect that a diverse student body (driven by a tuition assistance program that supported recently resettled refugee families) had on his Upper School experience. Since graduating in 2007, he has maintained his commitment to expanding educational access through consistent support of The Waynflete Fund. “I believe in this school,” he says. “Waynflete creates well-rounded, culturally sensitive, and open-minded individuals. I’m happy to see that it has become even more diverse over the years and that it continues to be a champion of accepting people of different backgrounds and beliefs.”

“Giving back to Waynflete as an alumna is a powerful way to show gratitude for the dedicated teachers who worked tirelessly to inspire and guide us, and to support the next generation of students. Reflecting on my journey at Waynflete, these educators instilled curiosity and creativity, encouraged confidence, and fostered engagement, pushing me to achieve more than I thought possible. By volunteering and contributing philanthropically, I can help ensure that the Waynflete experience—enriching education, meaningful mentorship, and a community that fosters individuality and support for one another—endures for current students and those who follow in their footsteps.”

WHY WE GIVE

We are one of the most generous independent schools of our caliber in the country when it comes to the allocation of tuition assistance. We do this because of our strong belief that the ideal classroom is made up of students from a variety of backgrounds. This would not be possible without financial aid.”
—GEOFF WAGG, HEAD OF SCHOOL

TUITION ASSISTANCE

Giving opportunity

Waynflete views diversity as a condition of excellence. This conviction drives our substantial investment in tuition assistance, including dedicated endowment funds and support for students from resettled refugee families.

Waynflete leads independent schools nationwide in making education accessible to families, with a $5.6 million budget providing support to 39 percent of the student body.

In today’s polarized climate, Waynflete teachers recognize that “learning across difference” is more crucial than ever. “Tuition assistance helps ensure that we bring multiple perspectives and voices to classroom conversations,” says Dean of Admission Fiona Haslett. “This elevates learning opportunities and strengthens the academic program.” This commitment to financial access also enables the school to maintain high admission standards, focusing on academic merit and student fit rather than family finances.

The impact of this commitment is evident in both classroom dynamics and the evolution of the curriculum. As a recent graduate shared, “I learned that the more time you spend with people who have different experiences, the harder it is to believe that the world is small and that your reality is at its center. Waynflete has taught me to be actively open to the idea that we are all different and that those differences represent an opportunity to learn.”

Malone Scholars

Created in 1997 by Dr. John C. Malone and his family, the Malone Family Foundation’s objective has the objective “to improve access to quality education—particularly at the secondary school level—for highly capable students who lack the financial resources to best develop their talents.” Waynflete was one of only 50 independent schools in the US selected for the Malone network; it was chosen for its academic excellence, talented faculty, support for gifted students, strong enrichment programs, individual attention, financial stability, commitment to aid, and diverse community.

The foundation’s Malone Scholars program provides a scholarship endowment to member schools, enabling them to offer tuition support to top students who are motivated to excel but lack the resources to fund an independent school education. “Being a Malone school speaks volumes about how we uphold our mission, prepare our students, and steward the school for the future,” says Waynflete’s Director of Development and Community Engagement Kelsey Robinov.

Sophia Mayone ’17 is one of 20 Waynflete students whose journey has been made possible by the Malone Scholars program. The frequent visits of nurses to care for a chronically ill family member sparked an early fascination with science. “I was very curious about it,” Sophia says. “I remember thinking,

‘Why is there no medicine that can fix this?’” Her curiosity led her to attend a summer science camp in middle school before joining the Waynflete community as an eighth grader.

Sophia excelled both athletically and academically at Waynflete. She proved to be a talented three-season athlete, competing in cross-country, basketball, swimming, and crew. Her interest in science continued, due in part to the school’s science classes that “were just so good.” Sophia fondly recalls courses taught by Wendy Curtis, Carol Titterton, and David Vaughan. “The classes were well organized and extremely well taught,” she remembers. “There was a lot of space for creativity in the classroom, and that lent itself well to taking more risks.”

After graduating from Lehigh University—where she also competed in crew— with a BS in chemical engineering, Sophia is now a PhD candidate in chemical engineering at Ohio State University. Building on co-op experiences at Sanofi Pasteur and Merck, her research now focuses on developing better ways to produce medicines that fight disease.

“The Malone Scholars program recognizes well-rounded students,” says Sophia. “The privilege of engaging in classes at Waynflete, in addition to sports and other activities, created a foundation that continues to influence my work today.”

Dan Kleban P’28, ’29

In his junior year at a Jesuit high school in Toledo, Ohio, Dan Kleban lost his mother— a devastating event for a young man growing up in a single-parent household. Years later, Dan realized that he hadn’t received a tuition bill for his senior year. The school had quietly absorbed the cost.

This act of kindness led Dan to wonder what path his life might have taken had he been forced to change schools during this traumatic period. “It dawned on me: For kids who experience some life-altering event that imposes a financial hardship, wouldn’t it be nice if the last thing they had to think about was ‘How am I going to continue my education?’” he recalls. Dan vowed that, given the chance, he would someday help students maintain educational stability despite upheaval in their home lives.

“These funds can bridge the gap, allowing students to stay at Waynflete, maintain their essential social connections, and avoid having to switch schools.”

Years later, Dan’s entrepreneurial success enabled him to fulfill this promise. After co-founding Maine Beer Company with his brother, he created student support funds at both his Ohio high school and the University of Southern Maine, his alma mater. These funds help students facing family challenges continue their studies uninterrupted—particularly crucial for college students, Dan notes, who often don’t return if forced to leave mid-degree.

In 2023, Dan established The Ann T. Kleban Memorial Fund at Waynflete to help students facing unexpected hardships. “These funds can bridge the gap,” he explains, “allowing students to stay at Waynflete, maintain their essential social connections, and avoid having to switch schools.” Dan’s support extends beyond the new memorial fund. Through Maine Beer Company, he has provided beverages for school events and hosted year-end staff gatherings at the brewery in Freeport. “Waynflete’s a special place,” he says. “The quality of the educators goes without saying. But part of what makes it special is the diversity of the student body. Getting to see folks from different socioeconomic backgrounds, from different countries, is enriching for everyone. It’s important for kids to experience that diversity. Anything I can do to support that, either personally or through the brewery, I’m more than happy to do.”

WHY WE GIVE

Sam Brin P’32

Increasing socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic diversity has been central to Waynflete’s mission for decades—a commitment the school steadfastly pursues despite its limited endowment and Maine’s demographics. Waynflete took its first step in the mid-1990s by launching its English Language Learners program. Building on this foundation, the school established the Global Community Scholars program in 2003, actively recruiting students from Portland’s resettled refugee community.

Today, Waynflete’s Students Qualifying for Extra Support (SQES) program extends the school’s commitment to inclusivity by ensuring all students, regardless of socioeconomic background, can fully participate in the school’s academic and cocurricular offerings. SQES promotes equal opportunity and helps bridge achievement gaps by covering essential costs—outside of tuition—related to school supplies, travel, translation services, academic support, and home internet connectivity. The program also provides access to meals and snacks, which are essential to learning success.

45 students qualified for the program during the 2024–25 academic year. With demand continuing to grow in the years following the pandemic, SQES-related costs have outpaced the program budget.

Waynflete Lower School parent Sam Brin has stepped forward to help meet this growing need. For Sam, whose parents fled the Soviet Union as refugees in the late ’70s, supporting educational access hits close to home. Before relocating to Maine, Sam created the Pull Up Fund in his childhood community of Prince George’s County, Maryland. Working with county public schools, where the majority of students are part of the free and reduced lunch program and experience low literacy and math competency rates, Sam helps fund initiatives ranging from facility improvements to helping district schools become early leaders in AI education.

“My daughter has had an amazing experience at Waynflete,” Sam says. “What resonates with me the most is making the Waynflete experience more accessible to kids who wouldn’t otherwise be able to pay the tuition and go to school at this kind of place.”

“My daughter has had an amazing experience at Waynflete. What resonates with me the most is making the Waynflete experience more accessible to kids who wouldn’t otherwise be able to pay the tuition and go to school at this kind of place.”

THE WAYNFLETE ENDOWMENT

The Waynflete endowment provides a steady source of income that reduces our reliance on tuition, helps ensure financial stability, and advances our mission for many years to come.

Endowment income helps offset annual expenses, either for the general operating budget (including financial aid and faculty enrichment) or for donor-designated programs. Many of Waynflete’s named endowments receive ongoing support from our community. We remain grateful to those generous donors who have recognized the importance of a robust endowment in strengthening our future.

THE KLINGENSTEIN ALUMNI AWARD

Waynflete’s board of trustees established the Klingenstein Award in 2019. The award is rooted in our mission, which calls for responsible and caring participation in the world. Through the Klingenstein Award, we seek to recognize one Waynflete alumnus/alumna per year whose responsible and caring participation in the world— at the local, national, or international level—has had broad and positive ramifications. The award is named for its first recipient, Patricia Davis Klingenstein ’47, in recognition of her work as an education advocate, a devoted community leader, a volunteer, and a philanthropist.

Daniella Nichols Cameron ’94, P’25

2024 Klingenstein Alumni Award Recipient

Over the course of her entire career, Daniella Nichols Cameron ’94 has worked to serve the disenfranchised. Today she serves as deputy director of Preble Street, a nonprofit agency providing services to people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty and working to find solutions to these problems.

From an early age, Daniella knew she wanted to be involved in social work. While at Waynflete, Daniella donated food to Preble Street and volunteered in the former Resource Center Soup Kitchen. For her senior project, she worked at the former YWCA’s shelter for homeless youth.

Daniella returned to Preble Street in 2009 as Teen Services supervisor. She played an instrumental role in the opening of the Joe Kreisler Teen Shelter, founded Preble Street’s Anti-Trafficking Services, and co-founded the Greater Portland Coalition of Trafficking and Exploitation. Daniella has presented internationally on anti-trafficking efforts.

“I love being part of an organization that is responsive, nimble, strong, and smart,” Daniella says. “We have much to be proud of every day here, from the relationships caseworkers build with clients to advocating to change systems that perpetuate injustice. We are all working together to respond to increasing needs and make a better world.”

THE DRAKE AWARD

In 1976, Emerson and Ping Drake, parents of four former Waynflete students, received a special honor for their service to Waynflete—an award in their name. Emerson had served on the board of trustees for 16 years, the last several as president. Ping volunteered in many areas of the school and was made an honorary Waynflete alumna. We honor their example and their memory by presenting the Drake Award each year.

Kate Burnham P’18,

’21

2024 Drake Award Recipient

When Kate Burnham joined Waynflete’s board of trustees in 2016, her son, Andrew, and her daughter, Eliza, were in Kindergarten and Early Childhood. She is now the proud parent of alumni from the classes of 2018 and 2021.

Kate served on and chaired several committees during her board tenure. Prior to joining the board, Kate volunteered as a class parent, parent fund class agent, and volunteer coordinator; chaired the Events Committee; and served on the Feasibility Study Subcommittee and the Campaign Design Committee during the Building on Our Strengths Campaign. She and her husband, Nate, also chaired the 2020–21 Senior Gift Committee.

Kate’s work ethic and compassionate nature have brought hope to those in need of support when they needed it most. Whenever she was asked, she was happy to give more of her time and energy to the school. Kate’s role as the chair/co-chair of the Auction Committee was her hallmark—a get-it-done attitude rivaled only by her grace, kindness, and generosity. This commitment to creating welcoming events has been a gift to our community and helped create a sense of belonging for many families.

She attended Division 1 Cornell University, playing #1 and #2 singles and serving as team captain for two years. Christine continues to share her love for tennis as a middle school tennis coach at Alexandria Country Day School, where she is a learning specialist.

Brandon Salway served the athletics and physical education programs at Waynflete for 34 years. He guided the boys soccer program to eight state championships and also led the 2013 girls basketball team to a state championship. A beloved PE teacher for three decades, Brandon taught sports skills and movement over three decades while developing sportsmanship and a love of the game. As the assistant director of athletics, he supported all aspects of the program and mentored many young coaches. Brandon entered the Waynflete Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023 as coach of the 1993 boys soccer team. He is being honored individually in 2024 for his long record of outstanding service and success.

Waynflete’s Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2022 to recognize the athletes, coaches, administrators, supporters, and teams who excelled in their respective sports or coaching/support roles and who brought honor and excellence to the school.

Class of 2024 Senior Gift

A message from our 2024 Senior Gift

Co-Chairs Michael and Emily Bukowski-Thall P’16, ’20, ’22, ’24

This June, when the class of 2024 graduates from Waynflete, we will watch our children take their places alongside the faculty and administration who have taught and guided them over the years.

Having proudly watched our daughter’s three older siblings graduate, we know that our family will be feeling a mixture of excitement, joy, and bittersweetness. We also realize that although each of our children’s ceremonies has been unique in both location and circumstance, they all evoked a deep sense of gratitude—not just for the Waynflete faculty who have helped reveal and nurture our children’s potential but also for the strength and values that this remarkable community has given to our children during their formative years.

We are confident and grateful that these gifts will stay with them long beyond the ceremony and accompany them throughout their lives.

We give our Senior Gift in celebration of the class of 2024. Join us in honoring the Waynflete community for all that it has given our families over the years— and all that it will continue to give.

Congratulations to the amazing class of 2024!

Families of seniors find that the Senior Gift is a wonderful way to show gratitude for the lifelong gift of a Waynflete education. The following donors honored the Class of 2024 with a donation to the school.

PORTRAIT OF A WAYNFLETE GRADUATE

VALUES MISSION

Waynflete’s mission is to engage the imagination and intellect of our students, to guide them toward self-governance and self-knowledge, and to encourage their responsible and caring participation in the world.

Our aim is to provide a program that combines security with challenge, playful exploration with rigorous expectation, and range of experience with depth of inquiry.

WAYNFLETE STUDENTS:

Explore the wonders of our world.

Curious and courageous learners, Flyers delight in discovery, draw on diverse perspectives and accurate sources, and employ flexible, critical thinking to deepen their understanding.

Grow through challenges.

Agile and resilient problem-solvers, Flyers embrace risk, stretch skills, propose solutions, and take direction from feedback and motivation from failure to achieve their most ambitious goals.

Work with passion and purpose.

Innovative and imaginative creators, Flyers pursue personal interests, develop unique talents, express authentic ideas and emotions, and prioritize health and humanity as they share stories and shape their world.

Lead the way forward, together.

With a strong sense of self and care for others, Flyers eagerly engage in honest dialogue, forge allyships and friendships, and combine forces with other changemakers to advance the common good.

Waynflete’s Portrait of a Graduate is the result of a collaborative process that included input from our entire faculty. It is designed to inform what we teach and how we teach it. The portrait enables teachers to align program, pedagogy, and assessment around a shared vision of student success.

STATEMENT OF BELIEFS

We are devoted to the healthy development of the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Believing that young people are naturally curious about the world, we engage our students with a rich variety of academic and cocurricular experiences, allowing them to explore their own interests, talents, and ideas. Learning flourishes when students are challenged to discover, to create, to take intellectual risks, and to invest themselves passionately in areas both familiar and new.

We believe that diversity is one of the conditions of excellence for our school.

We value the individuality of our students, recognizing that each will take a different path through life. We also believe that every person can be a responsible member of the community and that this sense of responsibility deepens when we treat our students and one another with trust and respect. It is out of respect for each individual that true community arises—a community of diverse human beings who value the challenges of honoring differences and resolving conflict. We believe that personal freedom and mutual support should be tightly interwoven, and that working with others is as important as striving to achieve one’s own goals. By making these connections, we create an atmosphere in which self-confidence, resilience, and strong relationships can grow.

We believe that our responsibility as educators is to collaborate with one another, with our students, with their families, and with the wider community as we strive to fulfill the mission of our school.

STATEMENT OF GOALS

Our goals include a commitment: to nurture in students a sense of wonder and a lifelong love of learning; to promote an appreciation for the liberal arts and sciences, while teaching skills of quantitative reasoning, critical and reflective thought, and aesthetic understanding; to develop a school community enriched by cross-age connections, interdisciplinary opportunities, and an understanding of the range and richness of human history and culture; to help students adopt healthy values and acquire new skills in an ever-changing world; to encourage students’ individual initiative and active responsibility for their own learning; to guide students to become active participants in the community as well as stewards of the environment; to be a bias-free community that embraces diversity and fosters a positive identity for all persons; to support students in developing a strong framework for ethical decision-making; and to inspire students to strive for excellence and integrity in all aspects of their lives.

CONFRONTING RACISM & BIAS: A COMMITMENT TO EQUITY AND JUSTICE

Waynflete works to create and sustain an equitable and just environment for all members of our school community. It is school policy not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, or disability.

We believe there is no place for racist or biased language, attitudes, behavior, or actions at Waynflete. Thus, we actively confront any form of racism, racist behavior, or other bias as part of our effort to foster a safe and respectful learning environment.

This commitment permeates all programs, actions, and relationships at Waynflete— curricular and cocurricular, personal, and professional. Waynflete is committed to making it possible for each member of the community to feel valued and to participate in all aspects of school life.
