Artistic Director’s Message

As well as a full performance program continuing to honour the big band greats and showcasing some of Australia’s finest emerging big band composers, WAYJO produces a series of workshops which nurture and encourage young school aged musicians in regional and metro areas, encourage young women to participate more in the music scene and provide opportunities for young musicians to improve in their composition and improvisational skills.

The WA Youth Jazz Orchestra’s 2016 program will showcase the very best music from many genres and eras of jazz. Highlights from 2016’s wonderfully varied program include participating in a workshop with The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, all the way from New York; performing with American powerhouse Michael Abene, one of the world’s most prolific and sophisticated modern big band composers and directors; a collaboration with Perth’s top hip-hop MC’s; a spectacular celebration of the Swing Era at the beautiful Astor Theatre; and a fascinating new commission by WAYJO alumnus Johannes Luebbers.

With this and so much more on offer, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Thank you for supporting these talented and hard-working musicians. I look forward to seeing you at a concert soon! Dr Mace Francis, Artistic Director 5

ANDREW MURRAY AWARD-WINNING COMPOSER

Andrew Murray has established himself as Melbourne’s big band boss, leading his own ATM15 as well the Blue Basement’s regular house big band. He comes to WA Youth Jazz Orchestra as an alumnus, after studying composition at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts and then with Ed Partyka and Bob Brookmeyer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG). In 2012 Andrew was WAYJO’s Composer-in-Residence.

“Andrew Murray took my simple tunes and made them into works of art ... if he does for his own music what he did for mine...I can’t wait to hear it.” - Fred Wesley, Musical Director for James Brown
