Athletics and Activities Wayzata High School

Wayzata High School offers a variety of extra and co-curricular activities designed to meet the interests of the students. The extra and co-curricular student activity program is an opportunity and a privilege afforded students in the Wayzata School District. A function of the extra and co-curricular program is to promote lifelong personal growth and development. Student participation in the extra and co-curricular program can encourage individual development by providing opportunities for leadership, sportsmanship, fellowship, teamwork, commitment to goal achievement, character building, communication skills, competition and school pride. Through their involvement in the program students are expected to improve their decision making processes, develop self discipline and self esteem, respect individual differences, and promote a healthy attitude toward addressing challenges. Opportunities for activities include a wide variety of alternatives offered on an ongoing basis and additional activities which become available throughout the school year. Many groups are open to all interested students; others have tryouts or special requirements. Information about the activities is included on NewsBreak. The Wayzata Trojans compete in the Lake Conference. The athletic teams, debate, speech, one act-play, visual arts and music are registered with the Minnesota State High School League. Students are encouraged to become active in a variety of activities while attending Wayzata High School. For further information regarding the athletic and activity program contact: Scott Gengler, Principal Jaime Sherwood, Athletics and Activities Director Prior to athletic and/or intramural practices students must have on file in the high school activities office: Step 1: Current Sports Qualifying Physical Examination (cutoff date for 2015-2016 is 6/15/13) - must be on file in Activities Office Step 2: Wayzata High School Athletics/Intramurals Eligibility form - must be turned in once per school year Step 3: Fee Payment Participants in Wayzata High School activities must hand the following in to their Advisor: Step 1: Wayzata High School Fine Arts & Activities Eligibility form - must be turned in once per school year Step 2: Fee payment - when applicable Wayzata High School Eligibility Information In addition to the Minnesota State High School League rules, the Wayzata School District regulations are: 1. Law enforcement agency citations of substance violations under the Minnesota State Statue 121A.28 will be investigated and enforced as violations under the MSHSL Bylaw 205.00. 2. Wayzata School District 284 has extended the MSHSL Bylaw 209.00 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sexual Harassment/Violenceâ&#x20AC;? to be in effect and enforced during the entire calendar year. This extends the rule to include June, July, and August, as well as the school year. 3. For a second violation, the student is ineligible for one calendar year for elected or appointed interscholastic and enrichment positions and all school-sponsored athletic and activity awards and honors(i.e. lettering, captain, MVP, etc.). Awards, honors, and scholarships not awarded, determined, nor controlled by School District 284 policies are exempt. 3

2015-2016 Wayzata High School Athletic Registration Information All participants in athletic programs at Wayzata High School must be fully registered prior to the athlete’s first practice/tryout. The Activities/Athletic Department will temporarily be located to Central Middle School June 15-August 3. Athletic Registration hours will be Monday - Wednesday 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Due to construction, we strongly recommend registering online. Note: Student-Athletes may participate in only one athletic program per season. This also includes Showstoppers (Fall) and Clay Target (Spring). A student-athlete who has transferred to WHS during their high school career, is moving into the school district, or is a foreign exchange student should register in person accompanied by a parent/guardian. You must complete the following steps to be cleared for participation: Step 1: Submit a current Sports Qualifying Physical Examination dated after 6/15/2013. Form must be signed and dated by a physician. Well-child physicals will not be accepted. Form must clear student for Athletic participation. Sports Qualifying Physical Exam can be faxed to 763-745-6625 or dropped off at Central Middle School (for summer 2015 only). Step 2: Submit the 2015-2016 Minnesota State High School League/Wayzata High School Athletic and Activities Eligibility Form. This form must be turned in each school year. Submit form at www.wayzataschoolspayonline.com. Paper copies will be available mid-June at Central Middle School or online. Step 3: Fee Payment. Submit payment at www.wayzataschoolspayonline.com. If you are paying in person, you must pay with check or cash. If all 3 steps are not completed, your student will not be allowed to participate, tryout, and/or receive any equipment. 2015-2016 Activities Information Opportunities for activities include a wide variety of alternatives offered on an ongoing basis. Following is a list of activities available: 3-2-1 Competition: Team competes internationally with other high school students on 200 curriculum-based questions.

JSA: Discussion of current events and promotion of civic participation. Language Study & Travel Program: An opportunity to travel to France, Germany, China, or Spain as well as a chance to host a student who comes to Wayzata.

Amnesty International: Promote and engage students in conversations about global human rights issues. Art Club: Creative time to work on individual or group art related projects.

Link Crew: A freshmen and new student mentor program to assist students in their transition to Wayzata High School.

Band: Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Pep Band, Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble.

Math Team: Competitive mathematical problem-solving at the local, national, and international level.

BPA, Business Professionals of America: Students build leadership capacity by designing projects, participating in simulations/activities and competing in the Workplace Skills Assessment Program.

Mock Trial: Competition in trial preparation and presentation. Musicals/Plays - Black Box Plays, Fall Musical, Competition One-Act Play, Senior Spotlight - Student Directed, Spring Musical.

Clay Target: Members of the clay target team will practice and compete in in the sports of trap and/or skeet shooting.

Quiz Bowl: Interschool academic quiz competition. Robotics: Students research, design, fabricate, and test a robot for competition.

Creative Writing Club: Create and revise original poetry and prose. Publish the school literary magazine, The Voice.

Science Bowl: Students are quizzed in the categories of biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science, general science, and mathematics.

Dance Team, Showstoppers: Perform at regular season home football games, 1-2 soccer game half times, homecoming parade and homecoming assembly.

Science Olympiad: An inter-school competition featuring science events in technology and all science disciplines.

Debate: Students prepare to debate an annual topic and participate in interscholastic competitions both in Minnesota and throughout the country.

Skills USA: Organization promoting technical skills and service occupations.

DECA: An international marketing, management, entrepreneuer organization that provides professional growth opportunities and experiences for students interested in the world of marketing and business.

Spanish Club: Promote and encourage students to learn more about the culture and language. Speech: Students participate in one or more of thirteen public speaking or dramatic events at interscholastic tournaments.

Drama Club: An organization for students who wish to learn and participate in all aspects of theatre arts.

Student Council: The student liaison between the student body and the administration and school board.

Empty Bowls Service Club: A year-long service club that creates bowls and platters that are then sold to the public for charity.

Student Television Network: Videotape school events. Events include music and drama events, political debates, science seminars, sports events and much more.

French Club: Activity for students who are interested in the language and francophone cultures. Future Problem Solving: A six step writing process solving future problems facing society.

Supermileage Team: Student activity with goal to design, construct, and race vehicle powered by 2.4 HP gas motor or electric motor and achieve highest fuel economy possible.

German Club: Promote and encourage students to learn more about the culture and language.

Trojan Leadership Council: A chemically-free leadership organization.

German Exchange: Hosting a German exchange student and/or going to Germany with the Exchange. International Club: International Student Exchange and hosting opportunities.

Trojan Tribune: Produce the Trojan Tribune, the school newspaper. Yearbook: Plan, coordinate, and publish the Wayako yearbook using desktop and digital technology.

ACTIVITIES AND CLUBS Name of Activity: 3-2-1 Competition Advisor: Sue Iverson, sue.iverson@wayzata.k12.mn.us Description of activity: 3-2-1 replaces KMO. 3-2-1 is a similar team competition, but has a different style of questioning. Where to go for more information: Vision 21 Office; B207. Length of season: First season is October thru December. Second season is February to April. Practice times: Wednesdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s during lunch periods. Practice site: TBD. Competitions: Two competitions per school year. One in early winter and the other in late spring. Eligibility requirements: Open to any student interested in meeting with the teams during one lunch period per week. Meet the Wayzata School District Extra-Curricular Eligibility Requirements. Awards criteria & type of awards: 3-2-1 results at the national and state level are distributed after each competition. Name of Activity: Business Professionals of America Advisors: Candy Lee, Tyler Shepard & Tika Kude, candy.lee@wayzata.k12.mn.us Description of activity: A Career and Technical Student Organization promoting leadership through business administration; finance; management information systems; digital communication and design; and management, marketing and communications. Students build leadership capacity by designing projects, participating in simulations/activities and competing in the Workplace Skills Assessment Program. Through this experience, students will prepare to enter the world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills. Average number of members: 50. Costs: Participation fee of $90 ($55/$35) to cover WHS participation fee and club fees. Awards criteria & type of awards: Competition awards. Lettering requirements will be determined by advisor. Student leadership: Officers selected by BPA members. Name of Activity: Chinese Club Advisor: Sheen Heng Zhang, sheen.heng.zhang@wayzata.k12.mn.us Description of activity: After school activities to promote and encourage students to learn about the culture and the language. Where to go for more information: Ms. Heng in room A318. Length of season: All year. Meeting times: 2:30-3:15 p.m. twice a month. Meeting site: A318. Eligibility requirements: Meet the Wayzata School District Extra-Curricular Eligibility Requirements. Costs: Participation fee of $70 ($55/$15) to cover WHS participation fee and club fees. Name of Activity: Clay Target Advisor: Scott Tordeur, scott.tordeur@wayzata.k12.mn.us Description of activity: Members of the clay target team will practice and compete in in the sports of trap and/or skeet shooting. Where to go for more information: Room D215. Length of season: 10 weeks. The date for 2016 season will be determined in early December 2015. Typically, our season starts the first week in April. Meeting times: To be determined. Currently, Tuesday at Plymouth Gun club for Skeet Shooting, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3-5:30 p.m. at Park Gun Club for trap shooting. Invite shoots on various Saturdays and Sundays. Eligibility requirements: Meet the Wayzata School District Extra-Curricular Eligibility Requirements. State firearm safety is needed. Costs and/or needed equipment: Cost for the 2015 season was $460 for shells and target for the regular season of trap and an additional $160 for participation in skeet. State competition is an additional cost. Students will need their own firearm and transportation. Awards criteria & type of awards: Please see Wayzata Athletic website for lettering information. Student Leadership: Each squad of 5 will have a squad leader and the team as a whole will have a team captain. Additional Notes: Clay Target is considered a Spring sport. Students can only be in one sport per season. FINE ARTS - SPEECH Name of Activity: Debate Advisor: Sheila Peterson Description of activity: Students prepare to debate an annual topic and participate in interscholastic competitions both in Minnesota and throughout the country. Where to go for more information: C212. Length of season: September through December for most novice debaters. September through January for most Varsity debaters. Traveling team continues debating through June. Practice times: In class and after school as arranged. Practice site: Wayzata High School. Competitions: Weekly from October through January except for a few select weekends, including but not limited to holiday weekends. Eligibility requirements: Must be doing acceptable work in school and must be enrolled in the debate class. Must meet the Wayzata School District Extra-Curricular Eligibility Requirements. Whether a student is interested in drama, current events, persuasive speaking or creative expression, there is something to spark their interest! Length of season: The first team meetings for new students take place mid October and the State Speech Tournament takes place in April. Practice and/or meeting times: The team meets as a whole one day a week after school. Beyond that, students sign up for individual work sessions with the coaches at least once a week. Since we coach one on one, the days can be pretty flexible. Practice site: Wayzata High School in one of the coachesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rooms. Competitions: Competitions take all day Saturday. Students Compete in approximately 9 Saturday meets. The section tournament is on a weeknight in March. Speakers who qualify attend the state meet in April. Students also may compete in a national qualifying tournament in April. The National Tournament is held in June.
