Editorial

STOP THE PRESSES And then Corona reared its ugly head in Europe. Just when we were all eager to give springtime sales our very best. Timing couldn’t be any worse. Horticulture is taking an enormous hit. But we are an industry of hope. Nature shows us that after a crisis, something beautiful can emerge. People become more aware of the importance of a pleasant home base. Perhaps travels will be cancelled, tourist attractions will be avoided and plans to improve the garden will be made instead. After lock-down, finally the plants to cheer up the garden, patio, balcony and living room can be purchased while enjoying a trip to the local garden centre. I would like to wish all the best to all our customers. Please know that your partner in plants is working with energy, enthusiasm and lots of positivity for a beautiful, green future. Evert Thielen General Manager

This magazine was about to be printed when all of a sudden Corona appeared. We would, nevertheless, like to share this magazine with you, be it with some minor adjustments. It is full of beautiful and interesting stories and products from our beautiful industry.

Students Make Plant Terrariums The third-year students from the ‘Flower & Design’ course went into battle in a classroom full of vases, mosses, plants and decorative materials. The challenge: who can make the most beautiful plant terrarium? Javado, which works closely with this course and sponsored the plants, declared Karen van Spronsen the winner.

Javado Decides to Use Fewer Sleeves We are used to lots of plants being supplied in sleeves, but these sleeves are often removed as soon as plants arrive at the garden centre. It all means extra work and more unnecessary plastic being introduced into our planet. Javado, together with its growers, therefore started to change the way our range is delivered. You may well have noticed some differences already.

Labels with Your Company Logo If you have your plants labelled with sales labels, we can also put your logo on them. Simply send us your logo, preferably in EPS format.

There are some exceptional cases where a sleeve is essential, but often plants can be perfectly packaged without needing plastic sleeves.

The test bench

Special report

We know that some plants are virtually indestructible, such as cacti, succulents, sansevieria and zamioculcas. What about ‘normal’ green plants? We tested 5 types: Asplenium, Begonia, Chlorophytum, Ficus lyrata and Epipremnum. We were given two plants of each species in 12-cm pots so we could conduct two different tests.

TEST A: No watering for 5 weeks For five weeks, the plants were placed in a location with sufficient light, but no direct sunlight. What happens if they aren’t watered?

No water for 9 days

Perfect!

No water for 15 days

Perfect!

No water for 27 days

Perfect!

No water for 35 days Still looks pretty good, but the bottom leaf is falling off

After 5 weeks, we started watering the plants again. After 2 weeks of care: The plant couldn’t be saved. All the leaves fell off

Ficus Lyrata

Perfect!

Perfect!

Leaf is very limp. No other comments

Plant revives completely. No damage

Epipremnum aureum

The begonia clearly needs water Good, 1 limp leaf

The begonia cannot live without water for longer than 18 days. The test for this plant ended here

Begonia Foliage

TEST B: Insufficient light for 5 weeks For five weeks, the plants were placed in a location without daylight, and only a very limited amount of artificial light. The plants were watered as needed.

9 days of low light

15 days of low light

Perfect!

The top 2 leaves have become light green

27 days of low light

No further change

35 days of low light

Leaves are slightly lighter green

Ficus Lyrata

Perfect!

Perfect!

Looks good. Newly rolled up leaf doesn’t open and turns brown

After 5 weeks, we put the plants back in a location with sufficient daylight. After 2 weeks of daylight: Plant revives completely. No damage

No further change

Plant revives completely. Only 1 new leaf is brown

Even more brown points

Plant is still alive, but damaged.

No further change

Plant revives completely. No damage

Epipremnum aureum

Begonia is dying after 9 days

The begonia cannot survive without light. The test ended after 12 days

Begonia Foliage

Perfect!

A number of leaves are Youngest leaf is shrivealready becoming soft ling. Brown points on and brown older leaves

Clorophytum variegatum

Perfect!

Colour is slightly paler

No further change

Asplenium Crispy Wave

Conclusions: • • • • • •

In the first two weeks, the plants were more affected by a lack of light than a lack of water. The Begonia is the most sensitive plant in this test. The other plants performed very well. The Chlorophytum suffers more from no light for too long than no water for too long. The Ficus lyrata retained its ornamental value for a long time without water; it looked like it was the winner, but 5 weeks was too long. 3 species of plants given no water survived without damage, as did 3 species of plants without light. The Epipremnum and the Asplenium were the winners of the test. Both survived the two tests without damage!

Grower report

Altanova

Reinier Hoogendoorn

Reinier Hoogendoorn runs a very special nursery together with his father, two brothers, and two uncles. They enjoy devoting their time to plants that are difficult to grow, which they call their ‘pearls’. Over the years, this has led to an unusual range of products. I’m interested in getting to know this nursery better. Fien the dog accompanies us enthusiastically with her tennis ball. How did you come up with the name Altanova? One of the plants we’ve been growing for years is Stephanotis. Another grower also grows Stephanotis, and by pure coincidence they share our surname Hoogendoorn, despite not even being family! This often led to confusion, so we renamed our company Altanova. Alta means high, and reflects the high quality we strive for. It’s also present in our name Hoogendoorn, as ‘hoog’ is Dutch for high. Nova means new, and represents the improvements we’re always searching for in our plants and methods. How do you benefit from growing ‘challenging’ plants? Our Jasminum and Stephanotis both need a lot of work. For example, we have to suspend a wire for each and every Stephanotis, which the plant uses as a support to grow around. When the branch is long enough, we cut the wire and tie the plant to the rack or the arch. Jasmine has to be tied manually twice around the arch during cultivation. We employ more than 150 people at our nurseries. Not many growers are capable and willing to grow these plants. We make sure we don’t flood the market. The disadvantage is that nobody designs ready-made systems for our cultivation. We have to initiate and pay for any innovation personally. “We believe that the easiest way isn’t always the best one. Our aim is to make sure everyone has access to the most unusual plants, no matter how difficult it is to grow them” You grow an unusually wide range; house plants, patio plants and garden plants. How did this come about? There are currently 6 family members working at our different sites. We all share a passion for growing plants, so we can spread our talents over different areas. The advantage of this is that we also spread the risk, and where possible we can plant a different crop when the first has finished, 14 Javado magazine

which means we can use our cultivation area twice. How is innovation related to your work? Our door is always open to beautiful ‘pearls’ from the world of plants. We prefer to focus on niche products, such as the Kniphofia we’re growing this year in a couple of beautiful colours. We’re also working on expanding the range of jasminum for the future. After the summer, we’ll be placing Pyracantha ‘Red Star’ on the market. Another lovely plant in the pipeline is Salvia Salgoon. Can you tell us more about Salvia Salgoon? This flowering outdoor plant isn’t a perennial. It will be placed on the market as a patio plant. The plant starts flowering around May, from which point on it’s a joy for the consumer to behold. The plant keeps on flowering and growing until the first frost. I had it in the garden myself last year, where it really stole the show. We also have a nursery in Portugal, so we can get plants like the Salvia on the market early in a beautiful flowering stage. You joined the nursery in 2019. How are you enjoying your work? I’m really enjoying it. Our company is very diverse, so my work has plenty of variety and there’s lots of room to do business. I regularly direct the activities at our site in Portugal, and I’m busy updating our range, but I also really enjoy simple hard work in the greenhouse. That helps me clear my head from time to time.

Kniphofia uvaria ‘Flamenco’

Echinacea Mooodz® The Mooodz® series is characterised by its compact, well-branched shape and flowers with striking colours.

Sustainable choices and certification Altanova uses recycled plastic pots and labels that can be completely recycled again after use. The company uses a closed-circuit watering system. Since switching to biological crop protection, pesticide use has been reduced by 90%.

Brand name: “Blooming Dreams” Any plant with ‘Blooming Dreams’ on the label comes from AltaNova.

Altanova is MPS-A, MPS-GAP, MPS-SQ and MPS-GRASP SEDEX certified.

Stephanotis originated in Madagascar, where it grows as a creeper around tree trunks. Every plant in the greenhouse has its own wire which it wraps itself around.

Tips from the grower Stephanotis is known for its sensitivity. However, if you know what you have to watch out for, you’ll find out that Stephanotis is stronger than you might expect. The plant adapts well to warmer or cooler environments. In a cool place, you can enjoy the beautifully scented flowers for no less than 8 weeks. What the plant cannot tolerate, however, are sudden changes to temperature. Be careful when it’s cold therefore, and make sure the plant is outside as briefly as possible. In the dark winter months, the best place for Stephanotis in the home is where it gets the most light. A south-facing window is ideal.

Garden Ferns If, like me, you’ve got some shady spots in the garden, filling them with beautiful plants can be quite a botanical challenge. One solution is garden ferns. The spot next to my shed is now one of my favourite places in the garden because the ferns there need hardly any maintenance and they’re doing really well. Most varieties survive a cold winter underground, but if the winter’s mild, I can see the ferns throughout the season. Dead leaves can be left, as they rot away quickly and provide nutrients for the plant. In the spring, you can remove any unsightly leaves that haven’t rotted away, and enjoy the young growth. No pruning or fertilising necessary! Have you got a spot where ferns would do well? Other forest plants, such as the garden cyclamen, plantain lilies (Hosta), rhododendron and hellebore, will also enjoy these places, so combine them to your heart’s content.

Different types and pot sizes can be found in our web shop 1/03/20 - 31/12/20

Salvia ‘Azure Snow’ Salvias are really lovely garden plants. They have a wonderful scent, can withstand sun and heat, attract bees and butterflies, and bloom in abundance for a long time. I wonder what you think about the Salvia ‘Azure Snow’. This special Salvia has lots of flowers on each flower stalk, and they’re such beautiful, bushy plants. What makes the ‘Azure Snow’ really special are its bi-coloured flowers. The dark purple and white flowers immediately catch the eye. In any case, I can’t wait to give this newcomer a sunny place in my garden.

Digitalis ‘Pink Panther’ A lovely, strong digitalis appeared on the market, and has been unavoidable for the past two years. It’s called digitalis ‘Pink Panther’. I asked the breeder what makes this variety so special. What makes the ‘Pink Panther’ unique is its sterile flowers. That means the plant can’t sow itself, and there’s no danger of your garden being overgrown by Digitalis. Another big advantage: the flowers continue to bloom for much longer. Moreover, it’s the earliest flowering Digitalis on the market. Well, now I understand that the garden centre is easy prey for the digitalis ‘Pink Panther’!

The best plant families in the world

Calathea Calathea in Ecuador. Photo: Andreas Kay - plants of Ecuador

Calathea, Maranta, Stromanthe and Ctenanthe are genera of the Marantaceae plant family. The enormous variety of colours and patterns in the leaves of these plants make them stand out immediately. Although there are lots of different types, they all need the same type of care. From Jungle Floor to Living Room Floor The Calatheas hail from the tropical rain forests of South and Central America, where they grow in the shade under dense vegetation. This means they’re used to high humidity and limited daylight, so the Calathea feel at home in a place without direct sunshine. Water twice a week. Spray regularly to prevent the air drying out too much. Interesting Fact Indian tribes in the Amazon use the leaves to weave baskets. The name Calathea, which G.T.W. Meyer gave to this genus in 1818, is derived from the Greek word Kalathos for basket. The Calathea is a very sociable roommate; it moves and makes a gentle rustling sound. The leaves fold shut at dusk, and reopen at dawn. The Calathea purifies the air in the home, regulates humidity, and reduces your stress.

Garden Centre report

To complete the full spectrum of interviews from grower to Javado personnel, we now meet some of our clients. We catch up with Zoe, junior buyer at Perrywood Garden Centre and Chloe, manager houseplants at Pugh’s Garden Village.

Perrywood Garden Centre Zoe Willis How did you first become interested in horticulture? I grew up with a love for the outdoors living opposite a heathland and after leaving school went to study Landscape Architecture at Writtle College, I joined Perrywood full time after finishing my degree. The company have been family friends for years so I have always been well aware of what they were about and how much chance of progression there is here. I have just about been part of every role at Perrywood, and through the last 11 years have worked my way up from a Nursery Assistant, to retail assistant, onto Manager and now Junior Buyer. What is your favorite plant of this moment? I always find this a very difficult question; how can you have a favorite? There are far too many to choose from. I have recently gone back to basics and found a love for chlorophytum, chamaedorea and asparagus again. I found I was always so focused on getting something “different” that I have never really taken the time to appreciate the bread and butter so to say! Do you use or run the social media for your garden centre? Whilst I was building up the houseplant department, I put together the Instagram @perrywoodhouseplants I think we were one of the first centres to use an Instagram page. It really helped pull a different audience. It continues to do so.. Do you visit other garden centers, plant shops or gardens in your spare time? YES! Most weekends I spend visiting open gardens, garden centres or just tending to my own houseplants and garden. How many indoor plants do you have in your own home? I would say it has to be close to 100. (I only have a tiny 2 up 2 down house) check out my Instagram to see @zoeshouseofhouseplants I pretty much make a purchase at least once a week, if not twice! The key to Perrywood There’s a great passion for plants, we love plants and we want to help people to love their houseplants and to have great gardens. Although Perrywood is getting bigger and bigger, it still keeps that tightness of a family business. There is a real team spirit where everyone looks out for each other and works well together. Personnel that has a smile on their face and really enjoy what they’re doing, that’s the key to Perrywood. 26 Javado magazine

What is the best piece of advice do you give to customers to ensure they have great success? “Right plant, right place” Another project I worked on in the houseplant department was making leaflets to help customers shop. We list plants which are great for certain rooms of the house. We now see customers walking around the houseplant department with these leaflets shopping for certain plants. I always say to customers, when they say they are not able to care for plants that they have picked the wrong plant. I have near on 100 houseplant in my home and they don’t take much attention I just choose ones that aren’t fussy. How do you choose from Javado plant web shop ? -what influences your decisions to try something new? – Social media?, Customer requests?, Javado recommendations? All of the above, we love trying anything new but at the same time we have years of experience and have tried and tested lots of things. We will always take customer orders and try to source things for customers. If a line sells then we will get it again and if it doesn’t, we won’t. The possibilities are endless with Javado. In your opinion what will be the trendy plant or plants of 2020??!! I think the green theme will continue, lots of foliage and maybe as I said before the old favourites will see even more of a raise. Anything that has a unique selling point will always trend and there will always be something people are hunting for.

Pugh’s Garden Village Chloe McCarthy How did you first become interested in horticulture? My name is Chloe McCarthy I am the manager of the houseplant, Giftware and christmas products at Pughs garden village Radyr an independent, family run garden centre in South Wales. I first became interested in horticulture at a young age when I was 15 in school. I worked at my aunties designer floristry business in Harpenden. I learnt all the skills required as a floral designer to then put into practice when I opened my own florist in my home town. What is your favorite plant of this moment? My favorite plant of the moment has to be the Boston fern green lady (otherwise known as Nephrolepsis) Although it may need a lot of attention I find its rippled leaves and plentiful stems create a great focal point and sits perfectly in my orangery at home. Do you use or run the social media for your garden centre? I run a personal social media page @houseplantmummyuk on Instagram where I share images of teens that I like and images of my personal collection of houseplants. We have a dedicated marketing employee who runs our social media pages. Myself and her work closely together to create content for our house plant area. We do this in particular when new plants arrive or when we have an ‘on-trend’ plant in store we make sure to let our followers know. We have a really and Javado magazine 27

engaged following on Instagram and Facebook with a total of just over 20,000 followers across both platforms, so we certainly see this as a very important channel for marketing our products. We definitely think that social media has an effect on sales because so many people are actively using these platforms and you can see a particular trend in house plants at present. As an example, the hashtag ‘#houseplants’ on Instagram currently has 2.5 million posts which shows you just how many people are actively engaging in the subject. With this amount of users actively posting about house plants, social media allow us to monitor these conversations and trends which means we can be reactive as well as proactive with regards to sourcing the right products through Javado. When we then promote these products through images or videos on Instagram, we make sure to use these key hashtags to ensure our products are being seen by the right audience. We also use our social media pages to offer advice for those who have bought plants from us. We’re very keen to keep up a conversation online with our customers and we find this a really nice way to offer an extended service that goes beyond purchase to let our customers know that we care about the experience they have when they purchase a plant from Pugh’s.

How do you determine which plants you want to purchase? When purchasing houseplants for the centre I make my decisions based on social media trends and home inspirational magazines. I also refer to colour pallet trends, which include matching pot cover designs with architectural plants. I take customer orders weekly and add to the order, these are crucial to ensure repeat business and high level customer service. When ordering from javado I always look at the “new” section on the web shop as this is a key indicator of the upcoming plants trends. A Closer Look at Indoor plant “Concepts” for Garden Centres What’s the best way to design the indoor plant department at a garden centre? It’s a very interesting discussion, and the answer obviously depends on all kinds of factors. One formula for success is to supplement the standard range of indoor plants (neutral or presented in the corporate style) with the presentation of a number of premium brands. Various well-known indoor plant brands have developed garden centre concepts, and we’ll be looking at them in more detail below. We’ve also compiled a lot of useful info about the benefits, costs, conditions and possibilities of these indoor plant concepts, so read on! What’s the advantage of integrating indoor plant concepts in the garden centre? There are three major benefits to integrating good indoor plant concepts. In the first place, the concept is strongly directed at sales, and encourages the consumer to make a purchase by explaining the benefits. The high turnover keeps the concept table looking fresh and attractive at all times, and reduces losses. Secondly, these concepts mean garden centre staff don’t have to worry about ordering the right plants at the right time. Every concept comes with a display plan, which makes sure plants on the tables match the seasons throughout the year, and creates the right dynamic on the shop floor. Finally, the concept is mainly about the narrative behind the plant and its quality, rather than price, which allows fair retail prices to be set. Is my garden centre eligible for these concepts? Incorporating these indoor plant concepts has to be tailored to each garden centre. Important factors here are the size of the garden centre and the dimensions of any tables the garden centre wants to use. The POS material is then made in the right sizes accordingly. Another relevant point is whether the business wants to integrate its existing pottery and decorative items with these concepts. You can see that supervision is needed to set things up correctly in a garden centre. The growers mentioned here have together employed a consultant who can help garden centres choose the right customized solutions. The delivery of the plants is provided by Javado.

The garden centre is responsible for arranging the hardware, such as garden centre tables, set-up tables and table edges. If desired, we can have the required materials made to measure quickly and cost effectively.

FAQ •

Individual garden centre or chain? Can you participate as an individual garden centre, or do you have to register as a chain of garden centres? The answer is both. Until now, we’ve mainly worked with individual businesses.

Does the garden centre have to be located in any particular country? The brand consultant can’t be everywhere at the same time, and decided to start by concentrating on Germany. This means we can guarantee German garden centres a visit with the consultant for a useful chat and further supervision. Concept tables can also be set up in other countries. It may also be possible to visit the garden centre with the consultant, but we can’t guarantee it.

Does the garden centre have to pay anything? The POS material is loaned free of charge. If the garden centre decides to stop the concept at any time, the POS material must be returned. The garden centre is responsible for arranging the hardware, such as garden centre tables, set-up tables and table edges. If desired, we can have the required materials made to measure quickly and cost effectively, and send them at cost price. There are no costs associated with supervision and advice. However, we do ask for the associated sales data, which is treated confidentially.

How can the range in question be ordered or reordered quickly? In our web shop, you can filter per plant concept under the filter: Grower Groups.

Opti-flor orchids Opti-flor, the premium orchid brand, has an extensive range of special, high-quality orchids. The excellent concept really brings the luxury Opti-flor items into their own. Consumers are immediately seduced by the attraction of this luxury segment. There are clear explanations about how to care for the product, and how long it will last. This concept is designed to supplement the top segment, rather than replace the standard phalaenopsis table.

StolkBrothers Anthurium The high-quality and beautiful aesthetics of this grower’s range take the sale of anthuriums to the next level. Only the best anthurium species with the highest quality are good enough for this grower, as is clear on the shop floor. A table with nothing but these plants immediately catches the consumer’s eye. Participating garden centres will see an immediate boost in anthurium sales thanks to this concept.

Eden Collection The beautiful range from Smit Kwekerijen (see Magazine #5) goes under the brand name ‘Eden Collection’. These resilient plants are not only highly attractive, they’re also easy to care for. The concept has a calm, natural look. The power of this concept to attract attention will benefit the entire green department.

Air So Pure The concept of Air So Pure may well carry the strongest message from the indoor plant segment: these plants contribute to a healthier environment! This is a proven concept. The accompanying range of products is comprehensive. The ceiling hangers that match the labels in the plants make this brand highly recognisable on the shop floor.

Mini Plants & Pots: Mix & Match The concept is simple, but everything makes sense and it works. The display contains a wide range of mini plants with a range of perfectly matching ceramics in the right size. Both plants and pots are easy to order.

If you’d like to find out more about these concepts, your account manager would be delighted to hear from you! 36 Javado magazine

Grower report

De Jong Plant

We’re greeted with garlands and cakes. Coincidentally, today’s the day that Eelco has been working at De Jong Plant for 25 years. He and his colleague Danny answer all my questions. Read on, and find out all about the nursery responsible for so many beautiful garden hydrangeas. While I enjoy a slice of cake, Danny and Eelco start telling me about the company. The history of our company dates back to more than 40 years ago, when the brothers Cor, Wil and Jos de Jong started their tree nursery in Boskoop in 1978. We’re specialists in garden hydrangea. The nursery has now grown to 12 hectares, so we’ve got plenty of space to grow lots of different varieties. Hydrangea is by far our most important product, but we also grow a number of other garden plants such as tree peonies, lilacs and lavatera. The delivery of these plants falls precisely in the period before the hydrangea season begins. Insignificant numbers of hydrangeas are already sold before buds or flowers appear, but the season really gets going in late April and lasts until mid-September. “We aim to distinguish ourselves through our innovative range and the quality, appearance and uniformity of our plants” What’s makes your company so strong? Our range! We believe good, personal relationships with hydrangea breeders worldwide are essential. We help them by testing new varieties at our nursery, and our many years of experience means we’re brave enough to make courageous decisions. We have to order our cutting material 2 years in advance. If we notice a good-quality new species or series, and we believe it will be a positive addition to our garden centre range, we buy large quantities immediately. Sometimes you place a product on the market after 2 years and it flops, but usually we can make lots of customers happy with these innovations. Of all the different varieties you grow, what’s your personal favourite? That’s a very difficult question. As a grower, I can see the strengths of each series. ‘Forever & Ever’ is a hit because it keeps developing new buds. The ‘Runaway Bride’ is obviously unique in terms of its appearance. Personally, I find the ‘Black Diamonds’ series with dark leaves very beau38 Javado magazine

tiful. I’d have to think carefully about whether I have a favourite... Actually, what always attracts my eye when the plants at the nursery bloom is the ‘Deep Purple’ from the Music Collection. What are De Jong Plant’s expectations for the future? Our company has always attached great importance to development. We’re working on so many changes and improvements that it’s impossible to mention them all. Nature and the environment are important themes in these developments. In 1990, we became the first nursery in Boskoop that fully recycled water. Since then, we’ve always invested in making our company more sustainable. Currently, the best improvements are in the actual plants. We’re working with breeders on developing species that are naturally robust, compact, strong and therefore more resistant. We’re also developing species that require less water. When it’s dry, we can use our own groundwater source for our nursery, but for consumers this is an area where improvements are possible. Finally, how is your relationship with Javado? Excellent! Did you know that Javado’s garden plant buyer Cees worked here for years? We think it’s great how Javado has developed in recent years. Hardly a day goes by without an order. Javado’s great strength is therefore in the day trade, as it’s one of the biggest players in this area.

Hydrangea macr. Charming® collection The beautifully drawn lines around the petals gives the Charming® an extraordinarily romantic appearance. There are a number of varieties in this series, all featuring the decorative edge.

The colour of the hydrangea is affected by the acidity of the soil. Under neutral conditions (pH 5.5 to 6.5), the hydrangea assumes its normal colour. Each species has its own preferred colour. If you put the hydrangea in a soil rich in lime, the flowers will turn pink. You can also sprinkle lime to promote the pink colour. If you put a hydrangea in acidic soil, the flowers will turn blue. If you want to promote the blue colour, you have to do two things. Firstly, lower the pH value by adding garden peat. Secondly, the soil has to contain metal ions. You can achieve this by adding alum or even rusty nails to the soil.

Hydrangea macr. Lovely Lady Mata Hari® The Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Lady Mata Hari’ is a mysterious lady. This spherical hydrangea blooms in different colours in a single head! The large flowers grow on compact, sturdy stems. This beautiful lady was bred in-house, and was the best novelty at Plantarium 2017.

Hydrangea hybr. Runaway Bride® Runaway Bride® is a completely new class of garden hydrangeas that blooms both at the end of the stems and on all the side buds of the previous season. The result is elegant tendrils of pure white flowers. Runaway Bride® won the ‘Plant of the Year Award’ 2018 at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Hydrangea pan Whitelight® This beautiful panicled hydrangea received the gold medal from The Royal Society for Boskoop Cultures (KVBC) inspection at previous Plantarium events. The plant flowers very richly. The flowers are really white, turning to light pink in the autumn. Thanks to its compact growth, this is one of the first plum hydrangea varieties that comes into its own both in the border and on the patio. The Whitelight in a nutshell: short stems with sturdy, white flowers.

Hydrangea macr. Colour your Table® This beautiful, low-flowering hydrangea is ideal for a garden table. This plant is perfect for brightening up your own terrace or as a gift to someone else. Colour you Table® is grown in a low pot, so it’s easy to find a suitable dish.

About Javado

Meet the staff at Javado! This time, it’s the turn of James Woodham. How might customers know you? I am the UK and Ireland Sales Support Manager. Having week to week contact with customers, helping with any forward orders and generally offering any guidance with product choice and availability. Tell us a little about yourself I’m married with three children: two boys aged 14 and 10 and a daughter 8. In my spare time I manage a local youth football team. Now the U15’s but started the team when they were U9’s. They play every Saturday morning and I hold an FA Level 1 coaching badge. What are your favourite plants of the moment? Ha! Working for Javado this is SO hard! Indoor plants right now are Dieffenbachia sublime, Calathea ornata, Sedum burrito and Epiphyllum anguliger. Outdoor plants – definitely any Acers! - with an ever growing collection in my garden.

How did you end up in the green trade? I studied horticulture and Garden Centre Management for 3 years at Merrist Wood College in Guildford. I was the Head Buyer of Plants at Woodcote Green Nurseries in Surrey for 18 years. Also overseeing the production nursery and cut flower import. I also worked in a large wholesale nursery in Kent as an assistant grower and managed a privately owned garden centre in Surrey for a short time. So what’s it like to work for Javado? Every day and every season is different which makes such a varied job. I have been working for Javado UK for 5 years now. I love meeting existing customers and new customers, ensuring strong working relations are formed and ensuring good understanding of how the Dutch supply chain works. Drawing on my experience as Plant buyer at the very successful garden centre Woodcote Green. I travel the UK and Ireland visiting customers as well as visiting growers, trade shows and plant trials in The Netherlands. Meeting great people that are enthusiastic about plants and discussing how to create increased sales together.

Our customers can benefit from our savings promotion. Keep our magazines in 2020, send us a photo of all 4 ‘Holland stamps’, and receive a real Dutch treat with your order.
