We stock an extensive range of pottery and decorative items that you can easily add to your order. Did you know that we’ve entered into a partnership with the quality brand Ter Steege? The company’s beautiful pottery is available in our web shop. Orders received before 12 noon on Wednesdays are shipped the following week.

Javado is a Premium Partner at Decorum In 2017, Javado became a Premium Partner at Decorum Plants & Flowers. The cooperation between both parties has been very positive, and we will continue as Premium Partner in 2019. There are some very positive benefits to this, such as being first in line when novelties are launched. In times of limited avilability, our orders also take priority over orders from exporters who are not premium partners. Decorum Plants & Flowers is a high-quality brand in the ornamental plant world. Growers who are Decorum members have to meet strict requirements, and may only supply top-quality products under the Decorum label. It provides buyers with an assurance that plants are high-quality, and originate from growers where sustainability is a high priority.

Large Plants If you place a ‘normal’ order with us, but need a single large plant, it’s very difficult for us to prepare it for transport. Often, we have to cut trolley shelves to fit the plant in, so we’d appreciate it greatly if you combine your order with several large plants.

Halt the flow of single-use plastics Unfortunately, a delivery of plants also means delivery of a pile of single-use plastics. There’s a high chance that less than 100% of this will find its way to the recycling plant, so Javado is leading the drive in finding suitable alternatives as quickly as possible. Fortunately, developments are taking place rapidly, and you’ll notice that more attention is being paid to plant packaging.

Houseplant and Garden Plant of the Month 2019 The site www.thejoyofplants.co.uk offers consumers a wealth of facts, tips and tricks. In 2019, they will again be organising more houseplant and garden plants of the month with the help of their social media channels. You can find the corresponding posters in our web shop.

Grower report

OK Plant

We paid a visit to OK Plant. This company grows a number of seasonal products, but has really conquered the market with its Little Kolibri Orchids. We spoke to Thijs van der Valk, co-partner at this thriving nursery led by Rob and Désirée Olsthoorn.

tributed to this success. We’ve actually just built a large warehouse next to the nursery to store the ceramics. However, the quality of our plants is also a strong selling factor. We cultivate more than 100 varieties of Phalaenopsis, and we know exactly what each variety needs.

Tell us about the history of OK plant In 1990, when Sparmannia and Saint Paulia were the most important products, Marcel and Rob Olsthoorn took over the pot plant nursery from their father. As soon as the opportunity arose to sell our old site and move to a larger one, we seized our chance and drew up a whole new set of plans. That ultimately led to a lot of great things.

“Selling a Little Kolibri Orchid is not just about selling a plant, it’s about selling a moment of happiness.”

What were these plans? At the time, lots of growers were cultivating Phalaenopsis in 12-cm pots. We also saw the great potential of Phalaenopsis, but wanted to look further ahead, as this high-quality indoor plant also deserved some special treatment. We noticed that the orchid was inextricably linked with matching ceramics. In order to keep the cost of the combined product low for the consumer, the production price and the shipment have to be in order. Our plan was born: Cultivate top-quality Phalaenopsis in 9-cm pots, design matching ceramics aimed at various target groups, and continuously adapt the product in line with changing trends. Where did this lead to? In 2008, we launched our first Little Kolibri Orchids on the market (Ed: the brand name under which their 9-cm Phalaenopsis is marketed). In the last ten years, we’ve increased production fivefold, but even now demand regularly outstrips our capacity. The development and continuous updating of our own line of ceramics have undoubtedly con-

10 Javado magazine

also designed sustainable packaging especially for garden centres. Phalaenopsis can be transported and unpacked using this package without plastic plant sleeves and without suffering any damage.

The plants are not encouraged to flower as quickly as possible, but are given the time to develop as well as possible. Quality can be controlled with computers these days, but we prefer to assess the plants ourselves. This means we can be sure that every plant in a tray of Little Kolibri Orchids is top quality. What does it mean to you to have Javadoplant as a customer? Our relationship with Javado is very valuable. Javado’s customers are exactly the same customers we focus on: the specialist trade in plants. Little Kolibri Orchids won’t be found on the shelves of a discount supermarket, that’s something we’re very careful with. Javado is one of our prime customers. We make sure that even at times when demand is high, Javado is always served well. What are your plans for the future? Our objective is continual development, so every year one or two special new products are added to the Little Kolibri Orchid range. Recent varieties in the past few years include Halo, Big Sensation and Victoria Falls, and this autumn we introduced Tiny Bouquet and Fragrance. In addition to developing new varieties, we have

Oh yes, and here’s a little advance scoop: we’re reintroducing a plant from long back, the Sparmannia!

Increase your turnover per m2 with the Little Kolibri Orchids store display 85% of consumers also want a pot when they buy a plant. The formula for success is simple: seduce your customer on the shop floor, and make it even easier for them to select a combination. OK Plant developed the ‘Little Kolibri Orchids Mix & Match’ store display, and the practical results are fantastic. The display, which occupies little space, is available in various sizes to match the store’s turnover, which keeps losses to a minimum. You decide: 1) the size: S, M, L, XL 2) the colour: black/natural wood/white) 3) the ceramics

The display can be bought or a contract drawn up. If you want more information, please e-mail marketing@javadoplant.com with subject ‘Little Kolibri Orchids: Mix & Match’.

Tips for the specialist trade: If you sell Little Kolibri Orchids, please let us know your address! We’ll gladly add you to our store locator on our website at www.littlekolibriorchids.nl. OK Plant spends a lot of effort actively promoting the brand among European consumers. On our site, we’ll be glad to VICTORIA FALLS - As soon as state that consumers can buy our plants from you.

Tips from the grower The consumer can’t have too many tips on plant care! These two tips are always useful: Watering: give the orchid a bath! Immersion is the best and easiest way to care for a Phalaenopsis. Remove the Phalaenopsis from the ceramic holder, and submerge the entire growing pot for about 2 minutes. Then let the pot drain well, and place it back in the ceramic holder. Repeat every five days. Placement: Keep away from the fruit bowl! Ethylene has to be avoided, and where there’s fruit, there’s ethylene. When Phalaenopsis ‘inhales’ ethylene, it ages quickly. It can be seen on the flowers, which immediately shrivel. Let the consumer know that this plant should not be placed near the fruit bowl. Another tip for garden centres: ornamental fruit also produces ethylene. Be careful with presentations involving ornamental fruit in the indoor plants department.

Désirée Olsthoorn makes sure that she’s always up-to-date with the latest trends. She visits lots of trade fairs, so that the various ceramic lines can be developed in the right direction. She’s also responsible for exposing the Little Kolibri Orchids brand to the European consumer

Fruit trees

Camellia

A beautiful camellia really brings joy to my heart. The camellia is radiant with beautiful flowers when most garden plants haven’t even come into leaf. The camellia flowers from February to May, although there are varieties which bloom even earlier. The plant maintains its shiny leaves all year round.

Are you already acquainted with our wide range of fruit trees? The range is totally focused on the green trade, and includes everything from the most popular products to special varieties and shapes. Everything is presented very professionally, so looks great when placed neatly back on the shop floor in March.

Camellia grows slowly, so pruning is usually only necessary 10 years after planting. In principle, low temperatures alone don’t damage the camellia, and in fact some frost even stimulates blooming

The Curly Multi Tree is a beautiful example of a specialty. It features strains of four different types of fruit which revolve around each other, and create a very special fruit tree with lots of fruit to enjoy.

My favourite? The Ack-Scent camellia, which bears beautiful pink flowers with fantastic scents.

Please note that we need 24 hours extra to supply our fruit trees, so keep this in mind when ordering.

Lavender

The lavender, with its familiar unique colour and wonderful fragrance, is the ideal garden plant as besides these qualities, it also requires little maintenance and attracts bees. My favourite lavender is the L. stoechas Anouk®, a crested lavender which starts to bloom early in the year and continues to produce flowers all summer long. The Anouk® can even bloom until October, and is the hardiest of the stoechas species. Did you know that besides purple flowers, the Anouk® is also available with pink flowers and white flowers?

Grower report

Apartus

The Apartus nursey is located in the heart of the horticultural area of Westland in the Netherlands, a stone’s throw from Javadoplant. The company is our main supplier of Pelargonium grandiflorum, and also grows a number of other voluminous products. It’s high time to get acquainted with Don Bruinen, the grower who puts his heart and soul into his work. Let’s start with your nursery’s name. Where does it come from? We grow peppers and potted plants, which is quite distinctive, or ‘apart’. Hence the name Apartus. Our grandfather and our father were growers before us, now my two brothers and I have taken over the business together. The roots of our company go back to 1950, and the nursery with the name Apartus has existed since 2007. What pot plants do you grow? We are known for our Bella Donna Pelargonium Grandiflorum, so that could be described as our main product. A number of other plants have been added over the years, namely Pelargonium Grandiflorum Angel, Dahlia Suniq, Hibiscus Suniq and Cyclamen.

What makes your products special? We breed plants ourselves, and make 40,000 new crossings every year. We assess the results on the size of the flowers, the plant’s composition, and the length of time in bloom. In the end, about 3 varieties remain each year that we add to our range. Our Grandiflorum’s are therefore distinguished by their large flowers, density of buds, extended flowering period and spectacular colours. The dahlias and hibiscus we supply also bear exceptionally large flowers. What do topics such as climate and sustainability mean to you? They mean a great deal! We use biological crop protection wherever possible, such as insect predators. All waste is separated for reuse. We use geothermal heat to heat our greenhouses. Water is pumped from a depth of 2,200 metres through our heating pipes in the greenhouse, after which it is returned to be heated by the earth again. “Our Grandiflorum’s are therefore distinguished by their large flowers, density of buds, extended flowering and spectacular colours.” What does it mean to you to have Javadoplant as a customer? We thoroughly enjoy working with Javadoplant. Everything is discussed properly, and the communication is excellent. Basically, fantastic!

18 Javado magazine

What are your plans for the future? At this moment, we’re converting the pepper greenhouses into plant greenhouses, because we’re going to grow more pot plants! We’ll have some nice crops ready by spring 2019: the Bella Fuchsia, Pelargonium zonale Toscana, Pelargonium peltatum Toscana, and a novelty, the Helianthus Sunfinity. These crops are perfect for our company, and we’ve noticed a big demand for them from the market.

Tips from the grower If you really want to enjoy beautiful pelargoniums in your home or on a balcony or terrace, place them in a semi-shaded spot where they are shielded from the wind. Make sure they get enough water, which should be put directly in the pot, not on the plant. Remove old flowers, so the plant can continue to bloom until late autumn. Give some plant food every week, which will enhance the flowers even more. If leaves turn yellow, the plant has probably been overwatered.

Bohemian Dreams

A sense of beauty and freedom Javado magazine 21

Trend inspiration: Bohemian Dreams

INTERIOR MAGAZINES, FASHION MAGAZINES, TRENDY BISTROS AND LIFESTYLE STORES ALL HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON THESE DAYS: THEY’RE FULL OF PLANTS. INDOOR PLANTS ARE BOTH GOOD FOR YOU AND FASHIONABLE DECORATIONS. 4 TIMES A YEAR, WE HIGHLIGHT A LEADING INTERIOR DESIGN TREND. THIS TIME WE’RE LOOKING CLOSELY IN THE BOHEMIAN STYLE. One very important characteristic of the Bohemian style is the sense of freedom it evokes, which can be traced back to the artists on the island of Ibiza. They wanted to stand out, and wore clothes and jewellery in which they felt unconstrained, At the same time, they had an eye for beauty. Life is relaxed and beautiful. That caught the imagination of many, and made

the style popular. In addition to its role in the world of fashion, this style started to influence interior design and gardens. Plants play an important part in all this. Broad-leaved green plants reflect the bohemian style perfectly, as do cacti, succulents and exotic flowering plants.

Tips & Tricks: Plant terrariums

PLANT TERRARIUMS PLANT TERRARIUMS ARE INCREDIBLY ATTRACTIVE, POPULAR AND EVEN FUN TO MAKE YOURSELF, BUT HOW DO THEY WORK? DO YOU HAVE TO SEAL THEM? DO THEY NEED WATERING? HERE, WE LOOK A LITTLE MORE CLOSELY. Terrariums are available in various shapes and sizes, and there are both closed and open versions. If you have an open model, the plants will need watering. A closed terrarium, on the other hand, only needs light and room temperature. It is a mini-ecosystem, where the water evaporates and then drips back into the soil when it condenses. If a leaf dies, it is converted into nutrition for the plants. Plants in a closed bottle can therefore be left for years without needing any attention at all.

Perfect for people without green fingers! We sell a range of beautiful ready-to-use plant terrariums, both open and closed, as well as separate parts for those consumers who enjoy DIY. It’s all great fun, and not difficult at all!

GARDEN CENTRE PRESENTATION Make an inspiring presentation with everything you need to make a beautiful plant terrarium yourself. Required: Glass vases | small bags of potting soil | pebbles | coloured sand | small pack of pincushion moss and flat moss | A3 Poster And obviously an attractive range of suitable plants in small pot sizes, such as: Fittonia, ferns such as Phlebodium and Adiantum, small Calathea, Chlorophytum, Spathiphyllum, leaf begonia, Coffea arabica and carnivorous plants such as Dionaea muscipula.

Step 1

Step 2 (insiders’ tip)

Step 3

Place the bottle on its side and put the pebbles inside it. This first layer is for drainage so that the soil and the roots are not permanently wet.

Put the bottle upright, and make a second layer with charcoal which you have broken up slightly so that the pieces are not so big. Distribute the charcoal evenly over the layer of stones. The charcoal helps with cleaning and prevents fungi.

Add a layer of potting soil on top of the charcoal layer. This layer should be about 8 cm thick, so that you can plant your plants properly in the next step.

Step 4

Step 5

Carefully remove the plant from the pot, and shake as much soil as possible from the roots. Press the plant into the layer of potting soil. Repeat carefully with all the other plants. Then cover any empty patches with moss, stones or coloured sand.

Pour some rainwater into the bottle, and leave the bottle for a week without a cork. Place the bottle in its definitive spot. This should have enough light, but be out of direct sunlight. After a week, seal the bottle with the cork. Occasionally, if the weather is really hot and there’s a lot of condensation in the bottle, you can air the bottle for a short period.

Tips & Tricks: Plant terrariums ATMOSPHERIC LAMP AND PLANT TERRARIUM IN ONE! This Coffea arabica in a glass lamp gives a particularly special effect. It works as a real eye-catcher in your interior. Put it in a light place, but out of direct sunlight. After carrying out some trials, the grower developed a version with 2 small air holes through which excess moisture can escape. This semi-sealed system needs very little watering; a small amount every 6 months is sufficient. You can use it as an atmospheric lamp, as the LED light produces little heat and will not burn the plant. It is available from our web shop, product number 315018. Poster A3 | 325286

Grower report

Van Son & Koot

There’s a nursery in the south of the Netherlands with which Javado works closely. It’s the European market leader in Acer palmatum, but also grows lots of other garden plants. These are growers with a vision, and an eye for novelties. Javado visited the nursery, and spoke with Puck Wirken. How did Son & Koot’s nursery come into existence? Van Son & Koot bv was founded in 1999 when the nurseries of Arjan van Son in Kaatsheuvel and Jim Koot in Boskoop merged. What are your main products? Van Son & Koot cultivates around 100 different plant species. Although shrubs such as Skimmia, Eucalyptus, Camellia and Hydrangea, are important mainstays, our main emphasis is on varieties of Acer palmatum. We cultivate no less than 65 different varieties, in a wide range of shapes and pot sizes. We are justifiably the European market leader in Acer palmatum, as we’ve been growing Acer for decades and have acquired extensive expertise in this area. Even so, we’re always looking for new and interesting shrubs to add to our range. It’s very important that garden centres can regularly introduce the consumer to beautiful new plants. Every year, we’re able to introduce a number of new shrubs on the European market. How do you manage to continually introduce new plants? We travel all over the world on our search for new 34 Javado magazine

plants for our nursery. We extensively research the characteristics and usage value of any new plant before adding it to our range. Our innovative approach in the company has led to several awards, including the Dutch Tulip Award, Best New Product at IPM Essen and the Plantarium, and Plant of the Year 2013 and 2014 at the Chelsea Flower Show. “The fact that we’re perfectionists can be seen in the presentation of our products. Our products have to be very attractive on the shop floor of a garden centre.” What makes your products special? I think that what really sets us apart is that everything we do is about ensuring the quality of our products, but that at the same time we can supply both very large orders and small orders for a few trays. We’ve grown together with the market, and mastered our crops perfectly. The fact that we’re perfectionists can be seen in the presentation of our products. Our products have to be very attractive on the shop floor of a garden centre. We design our own attractive labels which are immediately recognisable and provide customers with useful information. In addition, we make sure that our products appear in various media, including magazines, social media and TV shows What do topics such as climate and sustainability mean to you? As a company, these are very important topics for us, and we act accordingly. This is because our

customers have certain requirements in this regard, and, to an even greater extent, because we as humans understand that we have to treat the planet on which we live with care. What does it mean to you to have Javadoplant as a customer? For us, Javado as a highly reliable customer that we can count on. We’ve already achieved good results together, and we recognise more opportunities to grow alongside one another. What are your plans for the future? The company is enjoying reasonable growth every year. We’re therefore working on designing our business processes in way that will allow us as a company, in spite of this growth, to prepare our plants quickly and efficiently for our customers, and in accordance with their specific wishes where applicable.

Tips from the grower The acer is a very popular garden plant thanks to its graceful shape and leaves that colour beautifully. An acer has few demands, all that is needed to enjoy it is a place in the garden with some shelter and protection from direct sunlight between 12:00 and 15:00. Mix plenty of potting soil into the planting hole. If you want to prune your acer, do so in late summer or early autumn. The acer is also an excellent plant for a pot on the terrace. This plant does not like too much water. Make sure the soil is well drained, and that the roots are not standing in water. 14 hectares of greenhouses + 5 hectares of container fields

About Javado

Logistics at Javado

ALL OUR PLANTS, FROM A MINI CACTUS IN A 3-CM POT TO A 3.5-METRE TALL FRUIT TREE, CAN BE ORDERED FROM OUR WEB SHOP. EVERYTHING IS AVAILABLE IN SMALL QUANTITIES AND DESPATCHED INCREDIBLY QUICKLY, WITH PRICE LABELS OPTIONAL. HOW DO WE DO IT, AND WHAT DOES IT ALL INVOLVE? COME AND HAVE A LOOK BEHIND THE SCENES. We start with the most important aspect: making sure the ordered goods are neatly loaded into the truck on time. Stefan Sta is our transport planner. “There’s much more traffic on the roads these days, so it’s more important than ever to have the goods ready for the transporters on time every day. We start with a clean sheet every morning. New orders arrive from growers, and are prepared neatly for shipping on CC-trolleys. At the end of the afternoon, when an order is complete, it’s scanned and ready for loading into the trucks.” Our buyers are responsible for getting our orders in as early as possible. We asked our main buyer Fred Beekenkamp what this involves. “We’ve built up a good relationship with our growers over the years, and work closely with them. For example, we’ve agreed that at noon, we forward the orders we’ve received for the following day, The growers then make sure that these orders are delivered to us early the next morning. Orders that arrive after noon are ordered from the growers the next morning, so the more orders in our system by noon, the better our logistics processes on the day goods are dispatched.” We ask Tony Degens, our box supervisor, about how things are arranged in our distribution warehouse. “What never ceases to amaze us is that we start every day with an empty warehouse, but by the afternoon the same warehouse is full of plants that are then transported to every corner of Europe. The grower sends the goods on CC-trolleys, with an ‘auction letter’ attached to each one. This contains the order lines on the CC-trolley in question. Since the growers, the auction and ourselves use the same digital system, we can scan the letters and automatically print the right distribution stickers. Any plants for which we’ve agreed to provide price labels for the customer are first sent to our sticker department before they 40 Javado magazine

enter the distribution process. Our warehouse is divided into sections, where each section has its own supervisor who knows everything about the wishes of the customers in the section in question.” “From early afternoon on, lots of goods arrive and we need all hands on deck to process them,” says Evert Thielen, director of Javadoplant. “That means processes run more smoothly if we can get more goods delivered in the morning, and we can also send the loaded trucks on their way sooner at the end of the day. Every little bit helps here, so I’m taking this opportunity to send out a request to all our customers: send as many confirmed orders as you can before noon on the day before the day of dispatch.”

About Javado MEET THE STAFF AT JAVADO! WITH EACH ISSUE, WE’LL BE ASKING ONE OF OUR COLLEAGUES TO TELL US SOMETHING MORE ABOUT HIMSELF OR HERSELF. IN THIS FIRST ISSUE, WE KICK OFF WITH TINEKE VAN ROOIJEN. How might customers know you? I’m the person customers talk to at Javado when they ring us, and I also receive our visitors. Lots of customers have therefore already heard me or met me. My main job is managing reception, but I also do a number of other tasks, such as creating new customers in our system. Tell us a little about yourself I’m married with 3 children; 2 sons aged 24 and 25, and a daughter aged 22. I play a lot of tennis, and I enjoy walking and cooking. Another thing, these days I take part in ‘Fit Combat’! I get enthusiastic about things quickly, I’m full of energy, and I like helping others. On the other hand, I love to have some me-time and curl up on the sofa with a good book. My favourite plant? At the moment, I’m a big fan of cacti in the house. So, what’s it like to work at Javado? I’ve been working at Javado for more than 12 years, and I really enjoy it. My work is great, my colleagues are nice, and the atmosphere is good. I always look forward to the day ahead when I cycle to work.
