DIRECTOR’S NOTE When choosing a musical for middle school, I had several criteria in mind. First, I wanted to pick a show that had many roles and good parts for both boys and girls. Second, the story needed to have some exciting dance numbers and singable music for 7th and 8th grade students. Finally, the show needed to have a meaningful message. I ended up choosing Honk, the story of The Ugly Duckling, because I love how the story teaches that beauty often takes time to develop and that we should not judge a book by its cover. After Hans Christian Andersen wrote the beloved tale, it was said that the story was an autobiography of his own life. Andersen was a tall, ugly boy with a big nose and large feet. When he grew up, he developed a beautiful singing voice and a passion for the theatre. Unfortunately, he was cruelly teased and mocked by other children during his childhood. Other stories suggest that Andersen was the illegitimate son of prince Christian Frederik (later King Christian VIII of Denmark), and that he found this out some time before he wrote the book. It is speculated that being a swan (in the story) was a metaphor not only for inner beauty and talent but also for secret royal lineage. I hope you enjoy our presentation of Honk with its clever characters – including Drake, Ida, Cat, Greylag, and Frog, to name a few – and that you enjoy the humorous dialogue.
