END NOTES Thoroughly Modern Millie was the first sho w I saw o n Bro adway, when I was o n a trip with my wife to New Yo rk fo r o ur first anniversary in the summer o f 20 0 2. So , I have very fo nd memo ries o f that sho w and am pleased to bring it to the Westminster Christian Academy co mmunity. Millie has a really interesting place in histo ry. It debuted o n Bro adway 7 mo nths after the Twin To wers were destro yed and it may have been just what America needed. Many were still reeling fro m the lo ss o f lo ved o nes and scared and uncertain abo ut the future. Into that co ntext came a sho w with energy, humo r, wit, vitality, and a po sitive view o f life, and America lo ved it. Millie was the mo st ho no red sho w o f the seaso n with 12 Drama Desk no minatio ns and 11 To ny Award no minatio ns. It to o k ho me the co veted Best Musical prize, and its run was extended twice because so many peo ple wanted to see it. The sho w's Bro adway run was fo llo wed by a natio nal to ur in the U.S. and in the United Kingdo m. The plo t o f Thoroughly Modern Millie revo lves aro und a yo ung wo man who desperately wants to be a "mo dern"--typified by the belief that lo ve is unimpo rtant. "Mo dern marriage is a business arrangement" is what Millie read in Vogue, so it's what she believes! Getting herself a rich husband is what's fo remo st o n her mind. Millie meets a yo ung man who is also not lo o king fo r lo ve. His go al: "Every night to date a different dame." He's lo o king fo r what he can get fo r himself, and isn't interested in the attachments that co me with lo ve. Thro ugh the events o f the musical, these two characters co me to realize that there is much mo re to life than mo ney and pleasure, mo re to life than what yo u can simply get fo r yo urself. In a musical that can't take ANYTHING serio usly (wait 'til yo u see the villainess--she's ridiculo us!), true lo ve, "affectio n," and co mpanio nship ARE taken serio usly. So , sit back and enjo y all the elements o f this silly sho w: the secret identities; the age o f flappers, pro hibitio n, and speakeasies; a hilario us villain with "henchmen" who aren't evil; an o ver-dramatic so meho w-rich o rphan; the wise (no t-so ) o ld singing star; tap-dancing o ffice wo rkers, uptight o ffice manager, and their charismatic bo ss; as well as bo y and girl who aren't lo o king fo r lo ve. It's all tho se elements that drew peo ple to the sho w back in 20 0 2. There's definitely so mething go o d abo ut pro viding so mething to laugh at and enjo y in the midst o f uncertainty and fear. But I think there's so mething in this sho w that gives us so mething to think abo ut as well: o ur "mo dern" culture still tries to tell us that lo ve do esn't matter and that we sho uld do all we can to get whatever we can. But we kno w that lo ve DOES matter; we serve a Go d who is lo ve. It was fo r lo ve that Go d cho se a peo ple to reveal himself to . It was fo r lo ve that he sent his so n to be an ato nement fo r sin. It was fo r lo ve that Christ gave his life fo r us. It's lo ve that ho lds the wo rld to gether and sustains life, and it's lo ve that gives us new life. This musical isn't talking abo ut Go d-lo ve, o f co urse, but all true lo ve belo ngs to Go d, just as all truth is His truth, all beauty po urs fro m Him, and all go o d gifts co me fro m Him. What's amazing is that even this no n-religio us piece o f po p-culture theatre aims to ho ld the line against the lie o f selfish pursuit, and that is why we perfo rm it here to day.
