Westminster Christian Academy Head of School Opportunity Profile

Dear Prospective Head of School Candidate, Thank you for your interest in the Head of School position at Westminster Christian Academy. Our desire is that this Opportunity Profile will offer you a comprehensive first glance at our school and the key characteristics needed in our next leader. After serving Westminster faithfully for 28 years, current Head of School Jim Marsh will step down after the 2012-2013 school year. Jim’s belief in Christian education, incredible vision, and love for the Westminster community have undoubtedly made the school what it is today. He led Westminster in the move to the 70-acre Town & Country campus last school year, and his commitment to the school’s vision to prepare students to “engage the world and change it for Jesus Christ” has made a real, lasting impact in the lives of the students and those they touch after leaving Westminster. As we look to the future, we seek a leader who embraces all that Westminster has become and all it has the potential to be. We believe that God is calling Westminster to be a local, national, and international example of effectiveness and excellence. It has been said about Westminster that, “We should be high-impact and world-class because we are Christian, not in spite of that fact.” With our unwavering commitment to Christian education, high-caliber faculty, and state-of-the art facilities, the opportunities to “engage the world and change it for Jesus Christ” are only increasing. We encourage you to read through this Opportunity Profile and to further explore our website for additional information. If you are interested in pursuing this opportunity, please reference the Process of Candidacy page to begin the application process. If you have any questions, please contact Laura Coverstone (615.261.4623) or Ed Poff (860.983.0367), the SIMA® International Consultants who are assisting Westminster Christian Academy in this search. Defining Qualities of Westminster As Westminster settles into its new campus home, it is clear that the vision for a worldclass Christian education continues to be realized in every facet of the school. In addition to state-of-the-art facilities, Westminster offers the finest teachers, programs, spiritual life, athletics, fine arts, and sense of community, just to name a few. Additional emphasis is placed on new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics) initiatives, demonstrating that Westminster strives to remain a leader in 21st-century Christian education.

Commitment to World-Class Education Rooted in God’s Truth Westminster believes that Christian schools must never allow Christianity to be an excuse for mediocrity. Westminster will not settle for an education that forces a choice between faith development and high-quality academics. At Westminster, education is excellent because we are Christian. It is the belief of those at Westminster that only this kind of education honors our Lord and prepares His children to be difference-makers in the world for Him.

Commitment to Excellently Educate All Students Westminster is a covenantal school that not only strives to meet the needs of the most gifted, most talented, most exceptional students so that they may achieve with the greatest success, but also is committed to serving students with a particular learning difference or behavioral struggle and see them achieve at their own highest level.

Commitment to “Becoming Better Before Bigger” As Westminster plans to carefully grow into the capacity of the new campus, there is a continuing focus on improving in every area, from faculty and programs to school culture. For example, the Center for Teaching and Learning is a new structure

under the leadership of Academic Dean Dr. Scot Holley that helps teachers grow and succeed and helps better integrate technology into teaching at Westminster. Within this model, Director of Professional Growth Cindy Zavaglia directs the effort to help all teachers, especially new ones, grow and learn; Director of Technology Learning and Integration Scott Vonder Bruegge guides the effort to use technology to enhance good teaching; and Director of Experiential Education Chris Knerr continues to lead the summer and spring break opportunities for hands-on learning. The Upper School now offers a Seminar period, which provides courses outside the regular curriculum, such as study skills, media literacy, personal finance, and issues of faith and science. These and many other recent additions demonstrate Westminster’s commitment to continuous improvement.

Commitment to a Diverse Community Westminster has taken steps to ensure that as the school grows bigger, it will maintain its valued sense of community. The open design and six-small-schools-within-one-large-school structure helps to maintain that community. The goal is for people to walk into the school, hear the music, observe the art hung on the walls and think, “There’s something different here.” Westminster seeks to foster a community that embraces the cultural, ethnic, racial, denominational, and socioeconomic diversity reflected in our unity in Christ and the Kingdom of God.

The Vision To prepare and equip more young men and women to engage the world and change it for Jesus Christ.

The Mission Westminster Christian Academy honors Jesus Christ by providing an excellent education, rooted in biblical truth as interpreted by the Westminster Confession of Faith, for the children of Christian parents. Faculty and staff enable students to discover and embrace a biblical view of the world and integrate that view into every area of life.

Core Values Honor God in All That We Do (1 Corinthians 10:31; Mark 12:30) Knowing God, loving His Word, and living for Him are at the heart of the Westminster experience. Students learn that “all truth is God’s truth” in every aspect of life in and outside of school (e.g., in the Bible classroom, on the stage, on the athletic field, and in the guidance counselor’s office). Students are challenged to live out their faith in their relationships, character, and service for others.

and cocurricular programs, architecture, and organizational structure.

Enroll and Serve Families (Ephesians 6:4; Psalm 78:4) Westminster’s doors are open to every Christian family in the St. Louis region who desires a Christ-centered secondary school experience for their children. Academic programs are designed to meet the learning needs of all children in the family, and financial aid is available to help qualified families who are not able to pay the full cost of tuition. Families representing all of God’s people (“every tribe and language and people and nation”) have equal opportunity to a place at Westminster. Become Better Than We Once Were (Colossians 3:23-24) Excellence is defined as a process that is measured by individual and corporate improvement, not a specific outcome. Striving for excellence (i.e., improvement) is expected of all members of the Westminster community.

Partner with the Christian Home and Church (Proverbs 22:6, Ecclesiastes 4:12) A strong spiritual foundation is firmly established in the life of a young person when the Christian home, church, and school are working in partnership. Westminster exists to help Christian parents fulfill the biblical mandate given to them by God to “train up their children in the way they should go,” and collaborate with the church in teaching and discipling children in God’s will and way.

Lead with Our Serve (Ephesians 6:7-8; Philippians 2:3) Learning, modeling, and practicing servant leadership is central to worldview and leadership development. Tangible evidence of placing the needs of others before self is expected in all aspects of school life. Click to see Westminster’s Bylaws and Westminster’s Philosophy of Education, Educational Objectives, and Philosophy of Curriculum.

Learn and Live in Christian Community (Romans 12:15, 1 Corinthians 12:25-26) Principles rather than policies and relationships rather than rules take precedence in the life of the school community. Building, enhancing, and maintaining community are integral to all aspects of school life, including curricular

History 1970s

In the mid 70s, several St. Louis families from the Reformed Presbyterian Church recognized the need for a distinctly Christian junior/senior high school that integrated faith and learning.

1982 Westminster’s enrollment grew steadily, necessitating a move to a larger facility in its third year. After six years, enrollment had increased to 265 students, a 400-percent growth. As a result, the school moved to a former public school building which was its home for 30 years.

1983

Westminster was accepted for membership in the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), which provided accreditation and support for approximately 200 of the top schools in the region. Westminster was the first Christian school to be granted accreditation and membership in ISACS.

1975

Led by Dr. George Knight III, a professor at Covenant Seminary, a School Board was constituted, armed with the mandate to establish Westminster Christian Academy. Dr. Knight’s leadership and passion helped define a vision and philosophy that have endured throughout Westminster’s history. The Westminster Christian Academy Association was incorporated in the State of Missouri in September 1975. Westminster became a member of the National Union of Christian Schools, which established Westminster as a viable Christian school in the Reformed Christian school tradition.

1976 Mr. Nolan Vander Ark was hired as Westminster’s first principal, and Mrs. Evelyn Downs assumed the position of head teacher. The school’s vision was realized on September 7, 1976, when Dr. George Knight III addressed the students and faculty at an opening day chapel service.

1985 Jim Marsh began his position as head of school, along with a remarkable series of achievements, during his tenure.

1991 The United States Department of Education recognized Westminster as a “Blue Ribbon” School of Excellence. Jim Marsh traveled to Washington, D.C., to receive the award from President George H. Bush.

its comprehensive self-study. The team commended the school’s progress in many areas, including its Philosophy of Curriculum. The team accredited the school for another 10 years.

2007

A comprehensive strategic planning process was launched in using the self-study, constituent survey, ISACS/CSI accreditation report, and Town & Country vision as the foundation for strategic planning. The new Strategic Plan for 2007-2012 was completed and adopted by the Board in August 2008; five task forces (Schedule & Time Use, Philosophy of Pedagogy, Technology, Library, and Health & Wellness) implemented the plan.

1999

An $11 million addition was constructed to accommodate the burgeoning enrollment of 700 students.

2000

Westminster adopted the “Ten Pillars” philosophy into its athletic program. The boys cross country team won the first district title in 1987, and the school celebrated its first state championship in 2000 with a first-place finish in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

2011

In July 2011, Westminster relocated to the 70-acre campus at I-64 and Maryville Centre Drive in Town & Country. The new facility accommodates up to 1,200 students in grades 7-12.

2012

Westminster has grown steadily over the years, from an initial enrollment of 72 students to its current enrollment of 961. A new Strategic Plan was approved by the Board of Directors in September 2012.

2002

As Westminster’s facility once again filled to near capacity with 800 students, the school made the decision to purchase 40 acres of land in Town & Country, Missouri, for a new upper school. In 2007, through God’s remarkable providence, the school was able to purchase the adjacent 30 acres as the result of a Westminster family’s generous donation. The combined 70 acres would allow for the construction of a new campus for both the middle and upper schools.

2003

An ISACS/CSI evaluation team visited the school to respond to

The incredible story of the new campus and the ways God has provided can be found at (Service of Dedication Program, History, The Past 10 Years). Director of Advancement Zach Clark recalls, “I’ll never forget the $100 checks written in ‘care of Jesus.’ And the single parent whose financial situation changed overnight and who then pledged $100,000 to repay every dollar of financial aid Westminster had provided her family in the past years. I love that a 7th grader quietly pledged $125 ($25 for five years) and that an 8th grader made a multi-year pledge of $100, without being asked. Many people pledged for the first time to Westminster, and some made their first five-year pledge ever in their lives to any organization. And then, there are those faithful families that have been involved in supporting Westminster for so many years, pledging to walk the ‘second mile’ with us.”

The miraculous story of the Town & Country campus continues, with well over $10 million of the remaining $35 million already pledged.

Athletics Philosophy The athletic program is an extension of the physical education curriculum and has defined educational goals. The highest of these goals is to point athletes toward Jesus Christ by teaching Christian commitments and joyful living through students’ athletic experiences. In its proper context, athletics offers an opportunity for students to learn and mature. Along with fitness and motor proficiency, sports teach citizenship, respect for authority, self-discipline, self-control, the pursuit of excellence, and how to deal with success and failure. “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 “Do you know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Well, I do not run aimlessly, I do not box as one beating the air; but I pummel my body and subdue it, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24

10 Pillars of Westminster Athletics Athletic participants are accountable to God for their attitudes and actions. In essence, athletics is a form of worship, a celebration of life in Christ. • Honor Jesus Christ in all things . . . the most important measure of our success. • Christian character defines who we are . . . Godhonoring behavior, good sportsmanship, and avoiding drugs, alcohol, and tobacco are required. • Good grades and conduct lead the way . . . successful athletes must be successful students. • “We” before “me”... what is best for the team always comes first. • We will run the race to win . . . competing at the highest possible level is the goal. • We are in this together . . . student athletes, coaches, and parents are all on the same page. • Commitments are paramount . . . showing up and honoring your word is the norm. • We will grow and improve in and out of season . . . getting better demands hard work. • Supporting other players and teams is expected . . . we all share Wildcat pride. • Positive attitudes will influence outcomes . . . passion, enthusiasm, and energy will drive us.

Arts at Westminster The facilities at the new campus have provided opportunity for growth in Westminster’s art program. The school is developing a hallmark program through which students may become proficient as they would in a specific major in college. Plans for a fine arts conservatory, in which instructors will be continuously available to aspiring musicians, are in the works. A new piano lab class, offered for the first time during the 2012-13 school year, allows students – from beginners to expert pianists – to practice and refine their skills and prepare for the advanced placement music theory class.

A new theatre tech course focuses on three main areas of off-stage theatre work: lights, sound and sets. This course will draw students who are interested in technology, as well as those who like to work with their hands and build. It will provide excellent experience for those considering a career in theatre programs.

Executive Leadership • Above all, ensure that Westminster does not drift from its core vision to prepare and equip young men and women to engage the world and change it for Jesus Christ. • Be an excellent team builder, team leader, and motivator; this person must inspire enthusiasm, cast the vision, and be open to and create new ideas for continuous improvement, growth, and development.

The Head of School must develop and retain quality relationships with leaders of businesses, churches, and fellow CSASL schools in and beyond the St. Louis community. • Lead overall strategic planning with the Board and administrative team.

Expectations of the Head of School Successful leadership in any educational institution is judged by how well its leader meets the expectations of its Board, meets the needs of its students, and responds to the input of its faculty, administration and other constituent groups. Following are the key priorities included in the Strategic Plan 2012, which will be revised and approved by the Board and implemented by the next head of school. 1. Provide world-class programs and opportunities in academics, athletics, and the fine arts. Included in this priority are increasing cross-curricular instruction, updating the math and science curriculum and teaching techniques, creating opportunities for teacher-student collaboration, ensuring consistent implementation of Westminster’s pillars of teaching (Mission and Vision Statements, the Educational Objectives, the Philosophy of Curriculum, and the Principles of Pedagogy), establishing a philosophy of online learning, etc. 2. Ensure missional and financial sustainability through creative and effective utilization of resources, effective assessments, program development, community partnerships, and innovative funding programs. Included in this priority are ensuring the long-term affordability for families by establishing a 5-year flat tuition plan, developing alternate sources of revenue through utilization of the facility, increasing annual fund, fully understanding the “customers” of Westminster (students, parents, teachers), increasing the effectiveness in transforming the spiritual and personal lives and character of students while at Westminster. 3. Identify, recruit, grow, and retain high quality teachers and administrators. Included in this priority are recruiting candidates who fit the Reformed faith requirement, providing a world-class professional growth program, and developing and implementing methods to better identify and grow potential administrative leaders at Westminster. 4. Advance the Westminster community and deepen its impact on our families, region, nation, and world. Included in this priority are building a diverse school community and culture that reflects the Kingdom of God, enhancing the Christian worldview development of students through international programs and partnerships, expanding service-learning opportunities for students, establishing a steering committee to focus on renewing and strengthening the Christian education movement in the St. Louis region, establishing a Center for Advancement of Christian Education with national and global impact, and engaging Westminster alumni in the strategies of the school.
