SENIOR PARENTS’ INFORMATION NIGHT

The College Selection & Application Process

The College Selection Continuum

I HAVE NO IDEA…

1. WHAT I WANT FROM COLLEGE 2. WHAT MY ACADEMIC INTERESTS ARE 3. WHAT TYPE OF COLLEGE I WANT TO ATTEND

I HAVE…

1.  APPLIED TO COLLEGE, OR 2.  BEEN ACCEPTED TO A COLLEGE I SELECTED

STEPS IN THE COLLEGE PROCESS 1.  EXAMINE YOURSELF – TAKE OWNERSHIP 2.  CHOOSE YOUR COLLEGE CHARACTERISTICS 3.  ASSESS YOURSELF ACADEMICALLY 4.  APPLY TO COLLEGE

EXAMINE YOURSELF – TAKE OWNERSHIP ASK YOURSELF SIX BIG Q’S… ü  WHY DO I WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE IN THE FIRST PLACE? ü  WHAT ARE MY ACADEMIC ABILITIES AND NEEDS? ü  WHAT ARE MY COLLEGE MAJOR AND CAREER INTERESTS? ü  WHAT ARE MY EXTRACURRICULAR INTERESTS? ü  HOW DO I DEFINE MY VALUES, WORLDVIEW AND LIFESTYLE? ü  HOW DOES GOD KNOW ME?

WHY DO I WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE IN THE FIRST PLACE? To get a high-paying career? To grow in spiritual maturity? To grow intellectually; to learn more? To fulfill personal goals? Because it is time for independence? Because everyone expects me to go to college?

WHAT ARE MY ACADEMIC ABILITIES AND NEEDS? How academically competitive am I? Do I thrive under pressure? Am I self-motivated? What do I consider the best measures of my potential for college work? Test scores? Grade point average? Level of curriculum? What courses in high school did I like best and why? Would I like to continue coursework in one or more of these areas? How have I learned best? Large classes? Small seminars? Independent studies? What do I choose to learn when I can learn on my own? What has God called me to become?

WHAT ARE MY COLLEGE MAJOR AND CAREER INTERESTS? Do I know what I want to major in? Do I have a strong calling in a particular area?

WHAT ARE MY EXTRACURRICULAR INTERESTS? What activities do I enjoy most outside of the daily routine of school, like clubs, sports, musical activities and publications? Are there activities in which I would like to get involved, but have not had the opportunity? How will I continue to participate in missions and community service opportunities?

HOW DO I DEFINE MY VALUES, MY WORLDVIEW AND MY LIFESTYLE? What values are truly important to me? How will my college environment affect these values? Am I more comfortable in a conservative or liberal atmosphere? With a homogeneous or diverse student body? Do I want to learn from Christian professors and continue to learn a Christian worldview? What type of environment and teaching will help me in my faith? What kind of people do I associate with and admire? Will there be a solid core of Christian friends at my college? Who has a stake in my college decision, and why?

HOW DOES GOD KNOW ME?
