Welcome to the Fall Semester 2011! The mission of this newsletter is to keep all ECE students informed of ECE Club activities, volunteer events in the community, ECE professional development opportunities, and anything related to the ECE field.

Save the Dates for Upcoming Events! Sept. 7th & 8th ~ WCCC Student Club Fair ~ 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM ECE students needed to represent ECE Club to promote our purpose, upcoming events, fundraising, and recruiting members. Get involved! Sept. 23 ~ WCCC Family Fest ~ 5:30—8:30 PM This is a community service event to raise food and funds for the Westmoreland County Food Bank.

WCCC Club Fair Volunteers are needed to participate in the Club Fair on Wednesday Sept. 7th and Thursday Sept. 8th. If you can spare an hour or two throughout the 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM time frame, it would be terrific! Get to know your fellow ECE club members as you promote our purpose, upcoming events, brainstorm fundraising ideas, and recruit new members. Contact Beth if you can lend a hand.
Annual WCCC Family Fest Please consider participating in this great family and community service event. The 2011 Family Fest is Friday, Sept. 23rd from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Donations of non-perishable food will be accepted as admission. All activities will be geared to the ages of 3 to 12. A crowd of 300 children are expected. Please consider getting involved in this indoor event. Ideas for a children’s activity are needed by Sept. 7th. An example of an activity could be games, crafts, face painting, contests, etc. Participation in this event counts as community service for the WCCC ECE Club. Contact Beth with your ideas.
PAEYC’s 5K for Learning & 1-Mile Walk Let’s join the fun and form a team! We could represent the WCCC ECE program at this special event. We could participate and help to raise awareness about the importance of play, physical activity, and education for our youngest learners. Whole families are welcomed and children’s participation is encouraged. Entry fees are as follows: non-PAEYC members $20, PAEYC members $17, registration day of event $25, 1-mile walk $10 family fee. Register now at www.pghaeyc.org. Let’s go out and play! Let Beth know if you would like to form a team.
Early Literacy Conference All ECE students are invited to the Early Literacy Conference to be held Friday, Nov. 18 at WCCC from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. The theme of the conference is digital media literacy and young children. There will be nationally known keynote speakers and breakout sessions. DPW hours can be earned by attending. Registration deadline is Nov. 7th. Registration fees are $60 for PAEYC members who are professors/instructors/child care providers/parents and $70 for non-members. The cost for full time students is $20 for PAEYC members and $25 for nonmembers. For more information contact PAEYC at 412-421-6889.

Volunteer Opportunity at Nickers ‘N Neighs Volunteers are needed at Nickers ‘N Neighs, a non-profit therapeutic riding center that uses equine activities to promote the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well being of people with disabilities. The riding center’s address is 260 Mountain Trails Lane, Acme, PA 15610. It is located on a 54 acre farm not far from the crossroads of Route 31, 711 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Exit 91. They are currently accepting volunteers, students, monetary donations, supplies and services from the community. Become a Member of PAEYC The Pittsburgh Association for the Education of Young Children (PAEYC) is the professional membership organization for those involved with the early care an education of young children. Doctors, lawyers, and other professionals have membership associations which provide a unified voice on behalf of their members. In the same way, PAEYC serves as a community resource, and advocate for quality, and a voice for those in the profession of early care and education. PAEYC currently serves over 1000 members and is governed by an elected board. Members and those interested are encouraged to serve on a committee and take an active role in PAEYC programs including Membership Services, Advocacy & Public Policy, and Professional Development.

Westmoreland County Community College sponsors affordable ECE workshops made possible through Southwest Regional Key funding. Scheduled workshops at WCCC - Fayette County Education Center in Uniontown, WCCC - Greene County Education Center and WCCC Youngwood Campus are already posted.
