Above the archways of this surviving city gate is one of Winchester’s hidden gems, the tiny church of St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate.

20. Buttercross Winchester’s familiar 15th century city cross. A narrow passage leads from it to Great Minster Street, passing the almost hidden church of St Lawrence-in-the-Square.
