Tour a working dairy farm one mile southwest of Hudson. Hansen’s Farm Fresh Dairy is a family owned and operated farm of 150 milking Holsteins on 400 acres. During the hands-on tour, participants can ride the trolley; milk a cow; feed a calf; pet the wallabies, kangaroos and goats; make butter; and eat ice cream. Bring a camera! Antique Acres has a rich tradition of preserving the past for future generations. It is best known for its yearly Old Time Power Show in August, featuring steam engines, tractor pulls, threshing, a huge flea market and a working saw mill. The Center consists of several greenhouses each with its own specific botanical collection and environment suited for those plants. This 300-acre wooded reserve located in the heart of metro Black Hawk County features lakes, valleys, prairies and meadows teeming with wildlife. The Cedar Valley’s recreational trail system was recognized as Iowa’s Tourism Attraction of the Year in 2012, and for good reason. Over 106 miles of hard-surfaced trails configured in a series of loops offers a variety of experiences from peaceful wooded areas along lakes and streams to attractions located in our vibrant, historical downtown districts. A portion of the trails are groomed for cross country skiing during the winter months. We also have single track trails for mountain biking and water trails for paddling. We’re connected to Cedar Rapids via the Cedar Valley Nature Trail and we’re bicycle friendly.

A playground for the imagination, this interactive science center provides fun, hands-on exhibits that demonstrate how science affects everyday life. Visitors may also enjoy daily science demonstrations. Hours: Tues–Sat 9am– 5pm.

The Grout Museum of History & Science’s history collection focuses on the period from 1833, when Iowa was opened for settlement, to the present. The Maytag Car, Rath Packing Company whistle, Heritage Hall, and Pioneer Hall Mural help visitors envision and understand bygone eras. Hours: Tues–Sat 9am–5pm.
RENSSELAER RUSSELL HOUSE MUSEUM 520 W. 3rd St., Waterloo
Nestled in the heart of Northeast Iowa is a small jewel of American mid-Victorian architecture. Completed in 1861, this lovely brick structure is one of the oldest homes in Black Hawk County. Guided tours allow visitors to step into an authentic Victorian interior, including original family belongings and wander through picturesque Victorian gardens. Hours vary. SULLIVAN BROTHERS IOWA VETERANS MUSEUM 503 South St., Waterloo
Iowa veterans have a million stories to tell— tales of heroism, adventure and sadly of trauma and death. For 150 years Iowa men and women have stepped forward to take an oath to preserve the union, safeguard democracy and defend against terrorism in times of war and peace. Iowans gave this service in numbers proportionately larger than most states and without the expectation of fame or fortune, a tradition that continues today. The Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum honors all Iowans who served the nation from the Civil War to the present. The collection, preservation and interpretation of their stories and artifacts are the core mission of the museum. Hours: Tues–Sat 9am–5pm.

A circular structure built in 1921, this building once stored ice cut right from the Cedar River. The museum now features interactive displays that tell the ice harvesting story and show how the Cedar River has shaped business, culture, and daily life in Cedar Falls. Open May through mid-Oct: Wed, 1-4pm; Sat, 10am-4pm; and Sun, 1-4pm. Admission is $5; children 12 and under are free.
VICTORIAN HOME & CARRIAGE HOUSE MUSEUM 308 W. 3rd St., Cedar Falls
This 1862 Italianate-style home is teeming with furnishings, photographs, and everyday objects from the 1880s-1900s. The attached Carriage House features the William J. Lenoir Model Railroad, archives, and changing exhibits. This year’s special exhibition is “Before William Sturgis,” a look at the area’s history prior to European settlement. Byrnes Park Tennis Center is one of the premier tennis complexes in all of the Midwest, boasting 16 newly-resurfaced courts, six with lights. Starting in 1962, the Waterloo Black Hawks hockey team began thrilling fans from across northeast Iowa.
