Simpson Furniture FIRST PLACE: FURNITURE, CARPET/FLOOR COVERING HONORABLE MENTION: HOME DECOR STORE Again this year the voters of the Cedar Valley area chose Simpson Furniture the First-Place winner of the best place to buy Furniture and Carpet/Flooring. In addition, Simpson received the Honorable Mention award for Home Decor/Accessories. From the beginning, Simpson Furniture’s mission has always been to put the customer first. In 1946, R.L. Simpson and his wife Rena purchased the former Brown Furniture company and funeral home. In those years it was not uncommon for the local furniture company to own the local funeral home. Simpson did not keep the funeral home and instead focused on being the area’s top furniture location. Long-time former company president David Sandvold joined the firm two years later and helped grow the company until his death in 1996. Simpson furniture has had just four presidents during their 69-year run. David Olson started with the firm in the ‘60s and was the company’s president after Sandvold passed away. Olson is now retired, and current president Dale Emmert started with the firm in the 1980s while a student at the University of Northern Iowa.

Emmert’s wife, Deb, works in Simpson’s merchandising and accessories area, spending a lot of time at the company’s showroom in Coralville. “Our Coralville operation started about 5 1/2 years ago and this past 12 months we have really made inroads into this new area for us,” she said. “When we went south to the Iowa City-Coralville corridor we were excited about the possibilities to share the Simpson way with an entire new area.” Over the past year the Corralville store has taken off with sales growing by over $1,000,000. Coralville’s general manager, Jenn Friedel, has helped oversee this rapid upward push. “It all started last summer when we took a little different approach to our marketing and selling. With those changes customers were finding us quickly and they
see that when you buy from Simpson you get a lot more than just great new furniture. Simpson treats every customer with care and attention. I love working for this company.” Flooring coverings has also been a strong area for the Simpson team. Department manager and sales coach Kelly Ellingson helps make sure Simpson offers the area the best selection and quality of flooring for any size job. “We are so excited to be the first-place flooring and carpet company. We offer everything you would need when it comes to your floors. From carpet and vinyl to hardwood floors and the popular new Luxury Vinyl tile, Simpson also has the area’s most trained and experienced installation crews. So once you say yes, we take it over from there.” When shoppers walk into Simpson’s new showroom at 2300 Main St. in Cedar Falls, they are likely to see familiar faces from the past. The Simpson staff has more tenure than any other furniture company in the area. From Marla Channer and Rick Koch, who each have well over 30 years with Simpson, to Ben Withers and Bret
Wheeler, who have been with the store for almost 10 years, the staff are Simpson know their business. Every year when the Best of the Best is announced, Dale Emmert calls a companywide meeting to let employees know their efforts have paid off again. “It makes Deb and I feel good inside to see the entire crew smile with pride when we let them know that Simpson is indeed No. 1. We expect a lot from our team and it’s good to be recognized by those outside of the company” he said. The company has two showrooms, the headquarters in Cedar Falls and their newer operation in Coralville, with over 90,000 square feet. Emmert’s partners, Tom Cagley and Jeff Mick, help keep this train on track to continue to be the very best. Service manager Jeff Sammons started with the company in 1984. “I have been in service the entire time,” Sammons said, “yet it stills surprises me what our company will do to be sure our customers are happy. I know for a fact that no other furniture store in northeast Iowa will try harder to see that our shoppers are taken care of and will return.”

Cedar Valley Orthodontics FIRST PLACE: ORTHODONTIST A promising business opportunity brought Chris Holahan to the Cedar Valley in 2007. But it has been the people and personal opportunities that have kept the Mason City native and his young family in the community. “We have been very fortunate and very blessed by the Cedar Valley area,” said Holahan in a 2012 Courier story when received a Courier 20 Under 40 honor. “It’s been great to us as far as friends and family and schools.” Holahan owns Cedar Valley Orthodontics, which specializes in straightening teeth and correcting bites, through braces or Invisalign. Holahan bought the practice from Robert Spencer in 2007. He moved the practice, Cedar Valley Orthodontics, from its longtime home on University Avenue to First Street in Cedar Falls one year later. Holahan earned his undergraduate and dental degrees from the University of Iowa and then served as a general

dentist in North Carolina. An interest in orthodontics then took him north to Rochester, Minn., where he studied at the Mayo Clinic before coming to Cedar Falls. He’s a member of the American Board of Orthodontics. “I was a general dentist for six years, and I always was fascinated by what orthodontists could do,” he said. “I chose to return to the Mayo Clinic and study orthodontics.” Holahan makes a specific treatment plan for each individual patient and takes care of patients as if they were family members. “Our staff is amazing at making the patient and family feel comfortable and at home in our office,” he said.

Dr. Chris Holahan and his staff at Cedar Valley Orthodontics would love to thank our amazing patients and their families for voting us The Best of the Best Orthodontist in the Cedar Valley.

for the Pink Ribbon Run this year. “These are also examples of where we direct our corporate sponsorships and contributions. While we understand the importance of investing in our agents we also recognize the value of investing in our

Great Cycle Brands FIRST PLACE: CHILDREN’S CLOTHES FIRST PLACE: BEST PLACE TO BUY VIDEO GAMES HONORABLE MENTION: FURNITURE, CONSIGNMENT Great Cycle Brands is the parent company of both Neighborhood Closet and VidCycle. The mission statement of both stores is to improve the quality of life by selling great products that people need and want during difficult economic times. “During tough economic times our stores are built to do very well, and though we are not yet technically in a recession it is very true that the middle class has to look for creative ways to offset the higher costs they are seeing in areas like education, healthcare, medicine, food, etc.,” said company president Matthew Schneider. “The real secret of our mission though is our people and our core Values. We go out of our way to look for the right people, the people that have these core values. It makes for an excellent environment! When you visit a Neighborhood Closet, or VidCycle store you will also see the core values in the store hung with pride. 1. Obsess over customer service. 2. Have fun and make the most of today! 3. Good is the enemy of great. 4. Be adventurous, creative and openminded. 5. Be frugal and avoid unnecessary debt. 6. Make daily improvements. 7. Pursue daily growth and learning. 8. Be determined and hardworking. 9. Be honest and transparent. 10. Be confident but humble.
Neighborhood Closet
“There is nothing more rewarding than having a customer that says they saved enough money on a furniture set from us set to take a family vacation, or they saved enough money to pay their bills next month. This says to us that we are fulfilling our mission,” said Vice President and Furniture Manager Amy Schneider. Evansdale store managers Brody Knutson, who has been with the company eight years, and Duane Melsh, who has nine years with the company, say people love being able to save hundreds of dollars on the things they need. We’re excited this fall to roll out brand new flat-screen TVs to compliment our new furniture and new mattresses. Neighborhood Closet looks for ways to source quality products as close to home as

For example, they formed a partnership with Ashley Furniture in Wisconsin. They then partnered with a local trucking company to backhaul entire loads of furniture. Those freight savings go directly to the customer. Neighborhood Closet partnered with Symbol Mattress in Watertown, Wis., to custom build a mattress line specifically for the Neighborhood Closet customer. Marketing Director Samantha Speicher worked with Symbol to create the Refreshed Collection. “We wanted to create the highest quality beds possible while keeping the cost to the customer right around $500 for a queen. The mattresses are built incredibly well with warranties from 15 to 25 years, depending on the model. If $500 is out of your budget we have 17 other models that we carry for less, with twins starting at $55. That is the lowest price in the area, if not the state.
There are three major departments at the Neighborhood Closet: furniture, mattresses and apparel. (The Evansdale Neighborhood Closet only carries furniture and mattresses) Thousands of Neighborhood Closet’s suppliers are right from the community. “We pay cash on the spot for gently used kid’s clothes and baby equipment,” said Children’s Manager Nettie Petersen. Waverly Store Manager Erica Holtzman, who has been with the company for 10 years, said “buying gently used is a great way to save a lot of money. The Women’s clothing, and housewares are consigned. Gently used is a great way to save money while earning money on items you can no longer use.”
VidCycle
VidCycle has seen many changes since it began five years ago. Jake Burns, store manager at VidCycle, began with Vidcycle five years ago. “When I started the company had six

This Waterloo location was converted to VidCycle.” VidCycle buys gently used video games and DVDs, then refurbishes them to be as good as new and sells them at a huge discount from the price of a new game or movie. VidCycle carries all the brand-new games as well, which they sell for $10 less than chain stores. True to the company’s mission of improving quality of life by selling great products that people want and need during difficult economic times, VidCycle has also diversified into vaping products. “Vaping is a great way to get away from the harmful effects of smoking while saving a ton of money,” Burns said. “Seeing customers get away from cigarettes and saving money is very rewarding.”

Morg’s Diner
Bergen Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Inc.
FIRST PLACE: BREAKFAST On any given day, one can find a good mix of people starting off the morning with breakfast at a small diner across the street from downtown’s Lincoln Park. Around town, it’s well known that Morg’s Diner’s home-cooked meals fill the belly and warm the soul. “I think we are one of the most diverse restaurants in Waterloo. We get everybody and anybody,” said Sam Ludwig, a former waitress turned co-owner at Morg’s Diner. Factory workers coming off shift, attorneys getting ready for the day and retirees catching up with friends mingle over fresh pancakes, hash browns and orange juice. The place is usually packed, and the prices are reasonable.

Ludwig can’t imagine expanding and running a restaurant with 10 or 15 servers, a place where the customers don’t know the waitresses or the cooks. “I don’t want to lose anything that is Morg’s,” she said. “We just do the same thing every day. We try to remember their names and try to remember their orders. I think people like that when they come in, and you know them by name,” she said.

The Hansen Dairy Farm has been in the family since 1864, and dairy cows have been milked here since the 1950s. When all four sons decided to come back and work on the farm, we built our own creamery. The ice cream retail store was a logical extension of that. We sell old-fashioned, premium hard ice cream treats with the ice cream made on the farm in Hudson. It is slow-churned the old-fashioned way. We also sell our own milk, cheese curds, butter, cream and ground beef, plus a variety of products from local farmers and entrepreneurs. We pride ourselves on customer service and a family-friendly atmosphere.

Fighterbody Fitness FIRST PLACE: FITNESS CENTER We have been involved in fitness, sports and strength training for roughly a dozen years, and Fighterbody began in 2011. Everyone at Fighterbody Fitness is in this business because of the members and the difference we make in their lives. The one thing that sets us apart from other programs is the variety in our classes — kickboxing, strength training, cardio, sprint regimens and plyos, and nutritional planning. Lost Island Water Park FIRST PLACE: LOCAL/STATE DAY TRIP HONORABLE MENTION: FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT Spend a day at Lost Island Water Park and you’ll quickly learn why Trip Advisor named them a Top 10 Water Park in the United States in 2015 (as featured in USA Today). This recognition is a testament to Lost Island’s philosophy of continually reinvesting resources in their property and attractions. Like most other years, 2015 saw several improvements and additions. A revamped website allows users a convenient way to purchase tickets, reserve cabanas and research all the slides and water attractions. In addition to their deluxe cabanas, Lost Island introduced standard cabanas in 2015. The cabanas offer privacy, shade and storage for family outings. Also in 2015, the park saw a complete overhaul of one of its children’s play areas. The brand new Tahiti Village is an interactive tree house structure complete with a 100-gallon tipping bucket, slides and wading pool. Oh, and did we Lost Island Water Park mention Lost Island ★★2225 E. Shaulis Road, is home to Iowa’s Waterloo only live mermaid? ★★10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. daily, Attendance June-August reached near-record ★★(319) 233-8414 ★★www.thelostisland.com levels this summer, second only to 2007’s highly successful season. That’s saying a lot, considering there’s more competition in the industry than there was previously. Lost Island also offers plenty of food options for guests spending the day. Two full menu cafés offer everything from burgers and pizza to wraps and tacos. Cool refreshments are also available, like Dole Whip, ice cream, smoothies, root beer floats and more. And let’s not forget about the rides and water features, the stars of the show! Lost Island’s 11 major water slides and six water attractions include a hydromagnetic water coaster, lazy river, wave pool, speed slide, family raft ride and ample kids’ attractions. There is something for everyone. When the gates open each day, the highest priority of Lost Island’s lifeguard staff is simple: Safety. Lost Island lifeguards have received honors from Jeff Ellis & Associates for performance, and the park has been recognized by the World Waterpark Association. Training and testing begins before the season starts and continues all throughout the summer. Community is important to Lost Island. Lost Island hosted several events in 2015, including Dog Day with Cedar Bend Humane Society, food and school supplies drives, and a crowd favorite — the Oldest Person Down the Speed Slide contest. Lost Island’s commitment to guests is second to none. Next year looks to be another great year for Lost Island. The wheels of progress are always turning at Lost Island, so start making your plans to visit next season. You could even reserve a campsite across the road at KOA, where guests receive discounted water park tickets. So, on behalf of Lost Island’s staff and management, mahalo!

Veridian Credit Union is committed to supporting the communities it serves through a wide array of sponsorships, financial education, scholarships and volunteerism.
Veridian Credit Union FIRST PLACE: CREDIT UNION HONORABLE MENTION: BANK Who is Veridian Credit Union? Veridian is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members. That means that any excess earnings it makes are returned to its members in the form of higher returns, lower loan rates and better services. As a result, all of its members benefit, no matter the balance in their accounts. Veridian is proud of the roots it planted in Waterloo in 1934. It was founded that year – as John Deere Employees Credit Union – by a handful of Deere employees who wanted to offer their co-workers an alternative to commercial banks and other for-profit financial institutions. During the tough economic times of the 1980s, Veridian expanded its membership to the community and changed its name to John Deere Community Credit Union. In 2006, to avoid trademark confusion with Deere & Company, it discontinued using “John Deere” and renamed itself Veridian Credit Union. Veridian’s heritage has provided a strong foundation for its future. Now, more than 80 years after its founding, the credit union offers a full range of business and consumer financial services. It is continuing to grow with 27 branches statewide and more than 600 employees. Veridian strives to be convenient, with 13 locations in Northeast Iowa, including Hy-Vee locations that are open seven days a week. What does Veridian do? It’s committed

to making its members feel welcome and helping them create successful financial futures. The credit union is continually building relationships with its members, and those conversations allow Veridian to anticipate members’ needs and exceed their expectations. Veridian also empowers members by teaching them about their financial world. At veridiancu.org/videos, there are several educational videos that help people buy a car, understand home equity loans, learn about credit cards, explore health reform and more. In addition, Veridian embraces the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.” With that in mind, it partners with local organizations, supports community events, grants funding to inclusive groups and provides scholarships for deserving students. Membership at Veridian is open to anyone living or working in 40 Iowa counties and five Nebraska counties. Plus, all residents of Iowa with a disability (as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990) are eligible. Family members of eligible members also qualify for membership.

This accreditation means Covenant has the skills, team and technology to support better outcomes for heart attack patients. “Hospitals that receive SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack,” said Mary Ferrell, Covenant cardio-

attempt to reduce the risk factors for heart attack. To become an Accredited Chest Pain Center, Covenant Medical Center engaged in rigorous evaluation by SCPC for its ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack. To the community served by Covenant Medical Center, this means that processes are in place that meet strict criteria aimed at: Reducing the time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment Treating patients more quickly during the critical window of time when the integrity of the heart muscle can be preserved Monitoring patients when it is not certain that they are having a
heart attack to ensure that they are not sent home too quickly or needlessly admitted to the hospital “People tend to wait when they think they might be having a heart attack, and that’s a mistake,” said Dr. Todd Lawrence, medical director in the emergency department at Covenant. “The average patient arrives in the emergency department more than two hours after the onset of symptoms, but what they don’t realize is that the sooner a heart attack is treated, the less damage to the heart and the better the outcome for the patient.” Covenant Medical Center’s state-of-the-art health care encompasses the entire contin-

Western Home Communities FIRST PLACE: ASSISTED LIVING, NURSING HOME, RETIREMENT COMMUNITY After years of planning and training, employees knew The Cottages for dementia care would change lives for the better. They didn’t realize how quickly and how substantively. “We’ve had residents start physical therapy because they now want to walk instead of using a wheelchair. Some have stabilized enough to come off of hospice care, and several have gained weight,” says nurse mentor Sherry Turner, RN, reflecting on a short three months since The Cottages opened in June. “They’ve been able to stop using nutritional supplements because they’re eating better.” Turner and others attribute that to a smaller, more peaceful environment; the goal all along has been to create home, not something that’s simply home-like. Only 16 residents live in a cottage, each with a spacious bedroom and private bathroom. The design includes a living room, den, dining room and open kitchen. Residents can help with meal preparation, watch the food being cooked and then sit down with others around the table to enjoy a good meal and conversation. Caregivers eat alongside residents to encourage the family atmosphere. “Another benefit is how much time we get to spend outside, because it’s so accessible,” says Beth Hines, the household coordinator at Nation Cottage. “Residents love the fresh air and sunshine they can enjoy from either the front porch or back patio.” Environment matters. So, too, does having a staff well-trained to provide care in this optimal atmosphere. Old institutional ways that revolve around staff efficiency instead of quality of life are treated like a “wolf at the door.” During extensive training the past two years, employees learned taking care of someone is about far more than meeting medical needs. Sometimes non-medical interventions prove to be just as effective, if not more so. “It’s been extremely rare in The Cottages to use anti-anxiety medications at night to help with dementia-related behaviors,” says another household coordinator, Rachel Phillips. “A lot of times we’re able to redirect by offering an activity we know that the particular resident enjoys, or by spending oneon-one time with the person.”

Donors break ground Aug. 26 on the Jorgensen Plaza for Well-Being on the south campus of Western Home Communities. Eventually Western Home Communities plans to replace Martin Health Center with more cottages so all residents who need nursing care will be in an optimal environment. The current construction project,
however, is farther south on Caraway Lane. Donors and administrators broke ground Aug. 26 on a $42 million complex to include Prairie Wind independent living, The Jorgensen Plaza for Well-Being and 60 restorative suites
for post-hospital stays. “This will really be a space where our mission to create fulfilling lifestyles is realized, with all that’s going to be offered,” says CEO Kris Hansen. Located west of Prairie Parkway on a 150-acre campus, The Jorgensen Plaza will be open to the public; it includes an event space with seating for 400, a lap pool and therapy pool, walking/ jogging track, exercise classroom, salon spa, restaurant, pub, convenience store, outpatient therapy and outdoor seating areas. Its name honors Jim and Phyllis Jorgensen, 10-year residents of Western Home Communities who made a $1 million gift in honor of his parents. “My dad always called us a blessed family,” Jim reflected when announcing the gift. “So as the Lord has blessed us, we need to do something for others. We hope this center and all it offers will be a real blessing to Western Home Communities.” “The building plan looks amazing,” added Phyllis. “It’ll be such a great thing. A lot of people here and from the public will be able to use it.” Donations now total about $4.25 million to an ongoing campaign. “The spirit of philanthropy has built this organization since 1911,” says Mary Taylor, director of development. “It was a gift of land and cash that made it possible for Western Home Communities to get its start in Cedar Falls. Time after time we’ve seen people rise to the occasion to further this work, and we’re seeing it happen again. We’re grateful.” Construction on the three-part project is expected to take 18 to 24 months, with the entire complex open in 2017.
