CB&T: values-based banking The same values have guided Community Bank & Trust during its 23 years in business: superior customer service, community engagement and employee empowerment. Rachel Jaynes and Cindy Johnson have experienced those values first-hand. “I love my clients and my job,” said Johnson, who has worked for CB&T for nine years. “My clients have become friends.” CB&T offers the same serThe Courier vices that all 2020 major financial of the institutions do, but with a local twist — most customers who come through the bank’s doors are well known to staff. All financial decision-making is done in-house. As a financial services organization and a member of the community, CB&T’s goal is to establish broad and meaningful relationships with clients. That only happens over time, by putting clients first and delivering on commitments with a top-notch staff. Besides dedication to clients, employees

contribute more than 1,000 hours of volunteer time per year to area organizations and charities. One of the main recipients of this time is the bank’s Partner in Education, Dr. Walter Cunningham School for Excellence. Bank staff also collect Box Tops for Education and Hy-Vee receipts for the school, help with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank’s onsite backpack program, and bake cakes for the fun fair. Employees also collect school supplies, host student holiday carolers and journal with fifth-graders. In an effort to support work-life balance, the bank allows for flexible scheduling. Employees also receive special, paid time off for things like birthdays, “Family Matters” days and even “Work Life Balance” and “Wedding Day Jitters” days. Additional job perks are continuing education, a formal mentorship program and professional development opportunities. Employees can also cross-train in other departments and take advantage of feedback sessions with supervisors. “Gain-Sharing” is a newer program that provides a share in profits to CB&T employees who aren’t eligible for incentive bonuses.

CFCCU like a family Helen Pearce has always enjoyed working with individuals to achieve their goals and celebrate their successes. With that in mind, the credit union industry fit perfectly into her beliefs and philosophies — that’s why she’s CEO/president of Cedar Falls Community Credit Union. “In a sense, you could say the industry chose me,” Pearce wrote to the Courier. “Our credit union truly is like a family The Courier and I am grate2020 ful to be a part of the of it.” CFCCU is a local institution governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by the members to lead the credit union. CFCCU has three branches in the Cedar Valley area and service members in 20 Iowa counties. The credit union offers the same products and services of large financial institutions, while providing the personalized service of a community credit union. “Our secret to being the ‘best of the

best’ is simply our staff,” Pearce wrote. “The employees at CFCCU embody the People Helping People philosophy that credit unions are all about. Yes, we always try to stay competitive with our interest and dividend rates, but that would mean nothing without the caring and passionate team you can find at CFCCU. Kelli Aikey and Danelle Brockway are strong examples of this philosophy.” “During Kelli’s 27 years with the credit union, she has shown her passion and drive by going above and beyond for her members, and working to build the personal relationship that sets her apart from other lenders. I’m sure any number of our members would agree that Kelli isn’t just a loan officer, she is truly a friend.” “Danelle is no different! During her 20 years at the credit union, Danelle has helped members with tasks as simple as depositing a check all the way to helping restructure debt during financially difficult times. Danelle is currently the VP of Operations, but you can normally find her at our main branch teller line with a smile on her face.”

The power of ‘team’ The collaborative and professional atmosphere that has been cultivated at Financial Resource Advisors (FRA) since its inception in 1978 is the secret to its success. In 1978, Ivan Bullerman entered the financial services business working from his home in Waterloo. After several years, two other fiThe Courier 2020 nancial profesof the sionals joined him and they rented office space. Growth continued throughout the years and in 1997, Bullerman’s son, Jay, also a financial professional, returned to Waterloo to join the firm. The current name of the firm, Financial Resource Advisors, was selected in 1999. An accounting firm, Integrated Accounting Solutions, followed in 2011. There are currently eight licensed advisors on the FRA team. FRA believes people want to make smart, responsible and values-based decisions with and about money. However,

this can be a challenge when conflicting emotions are wrapped in the unexpected or uncertain. This is where practical, professional experience is invaluable. It helps clients avoid the paralyzing emotional depression at the bottom of markets and irrational exuberance at the top. “We believe a holistic view of our clients’ wealth management needs is the foundation for delivering comprehensive advice focused on achieving their life goals,” the business wrote in their Best of the Best writeup. “Our advisory services span investment, risk, tax, retirement, and estate planning needs and our responsibility in all cases is to provide personalized advice and effective risk management.” FRA carries that same sense of responsibility over to its relationship to the community. The business has selected three strategic partners to help promote financial literacy — the Job Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cedar Valley. As a partner, FRA includes these organizations in its annual budget, educates advisors and staff about the work being done and encourages employees to volunteer on company time.

BEST OF THE BEST

Colwell Ford offers award-winning service Bill Colwell Ford, located in Hudson, wants to thank all their loyal customers for voting their dealership the Cedar Valley’s No. 1 overall dealership to do business with year after year. And they’re extremely honored to be recognized as the Best of the Best in Oil Change Service (Quick Lane), and Automotive Salesperson with Ernie Doeden. They also want to recognize Jordan Myers and Braden Rogers as honorable mentions in the Automotive Salesperson category, and Quick Lane as honorable menThe Courier tion for brake 2020 service. of the If you ask Bill what the success of Bill Colwell Ford can be attributed to, he would simply reply with two words, “our employees.” The growth that this company has seen in the past 36 years is from the consistent hard work from their employees. Bill set a standard of how to take care of their customers and the employees have followed it, and because of that they have built a repeat loyal business. Bill Colwell said, “All of our employees know that our customers can buy a car or get their oil changed anywhere, which is why we have to go above and beyond when it comes to customer service.” Customers may have plenty of options when it comes to purchasing and servicing their vehicle, but they choose Bill Colwell Ford year after year. On average the Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center performs 50 oil changes a day, which is around 1,300 a month. And over the past 36 years Bill Colwell Ford has sold over 47,000 vehicles to customers spanning four generations. Bill Colwell has been in the car business his whole life, first working with his father’s dealership in the 1970s before purchasing the Keith Motor Company’s Ford franchise in Hudson in 1984. He built Bill Colwell Ford on the belief that treating his customers and his employees with respect and fairness was the only way to go. Now that Bill Colwell Ford has grown from six to nearly 60 employees, this dedicated staff still believes in making our customer satisfaction second to none. Since 1984, their location on the corner of Highway 63 and Waterloo Road in Hudson has changed quite a bit. In 2012, the dealership began building a new facility directly behind the previous dealership, which had been built in 1960. In October of 2013, they transitioned into the new con-

In July of 2016, Bill Colwell Ford added the Cedar Valley Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center. And last summer they completed a remodel of their service drive. The physical location is constantly being improved, but so is their virtual location. Their website, www.billcolwellford.com, is constantly being updated with new inventory, photos, and blogs. They also have a “Personalize Your Payment” tool so customers can start the buying process from the comfort of their own home, which has become extremely important in serving people during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, they have a newly updated online scheduling tool for service appointments with a pick-up and delivery option. “All of these changes have been made with the customer in mind. From day one our goal has been to make the buying process and ownership experience simple and stress-free. And as times change, we as a company continue to adapt and improve to accommodate our customers,” commented Blake Colwell.

Not only has the dealership evolved over the years, but their employees have as well. As vehicle technology progresses, it requires increased levels of knowledge and skills for automotive technicians and the sales staff. This past year, Dan Kleiner completed Ford’s workforce certification technician training program, and Austin Kramer completed Chassis Master Retention and Engine Master Retention in Ford’s Masters Program. Ben Wilson completed another year as a Senior Master Technician, which is Ford Motor Company’s highest certification that a technician can achieve and requires over 550 hours of Ford training. And Devin Schafer graduated from the Ford ASSET Program at DMACC, a two-year program that allows students to earn while they learn and gain hands-on technical experience while earning an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology. This year brought an unexpected challenge of serving customers during a pandemic. With the sudden changes in the community, the dealership quickly adapted to meet customers’ needs in the safest way

possible. Along with following guidelines from the CDC and the online car-shopping tools, they introduced a free pick-up and delivery option for service appointments, video chats with sales staff by request, at-home test drives, and home delivery of purchased vehicles. “We’re seeing just how valuable reliable transportation is, whether it’s getting essential employees to work every day or going to the store to get important supplies. That’s why we’ve stepped up in offering ways for customers to still take care of automotive needs while keeping everyone’s health and safety in mind,” said Blake Colwell. With 36 years of putting people first, it’s no surprise that the dealership has won its fair share of awards. Bill Colwell Ford has won numerous customer satisfaction awards, including the prestigious President’s Award from Ford Motor Company three times. The award recognizes dealers for excellence in providing outstanding customer service and satisfaction. In 2019 they were named a Top 100 Dealership in the United States for their reputation score on Reputation.com. Locally they have also been voted the Best of the Best five times in the Cedar Valley. Even with everything going on at Bill Colwell Ford they still are able to find time to give back to the community. As of 2020, Bill Colwell Ford has raised over $68,000 for the Hudson Athletic Booster Club, who is able to use that money for uniform and equipment replacement for the students. Bill Colwell Ford has also worked with other organizations including the Cedar Valley Hospice, the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, Cedar Bend Humane Society, House of Hope, and the Friends of the Family. “Being able to give back to those who have given us a chance to earn their business is what keeps our business going. The Cedar Valley is a great community and we’re happy to give back and be a part of it,” said Bill Colwell. If you are in the market for a new, preowned, or Certified Pre-Owned vehicle feel free to give Bill Colwell Ford a call or visit their website www.billcolwellford. com, which has thousands of pictures and information on their inventory. If you’re not in the market for a new vehicle, they also have an outstanding Ford Service Department and Quick Lane to help maintain your current vehicle, no matter the make and model. Of course, you can always stop by the dealership to get assistance with any automotive need, or just to say hi and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Making each moment matter In 1979, Cedar Valley Hospice was founded by a group of grassroots volunteers in our community who saw a need for compassionate, end-of-life care in the Cedar Valley. The idea was started by Virginia Bisbee, who had cared for a dying relative but found an inadequate support system. Other founding board members inThe Courier cluded: Karol 2020 Rae Hoth, of the board president; and Dr. Robert Guthrie, founder of the first Cancer Treatment Center in Waterloo. There were 24 on the first board that met in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church. They were passionate and studied all they could on hospice programs before starting, and also educated the community, its hospitals, funeral directors, religious members, etc., about the benefits of hospice services. Currently, Cedar Valley Hospice

serves over 1,000 patient families per year, has a paid staff of 120 employees and has 400 volunteers. In over four decades, it has served over 20,000 patient families with hospice care and thousands more through other services. Cedar Valley Hospice’s mission is to enrich lives with knowledge, respect and compassionate care. Its main service is hospice care for those nearing the end of life, but Change to Cedar Valley Hospice also offers palliative care for those not quite ready for hospice, adult and youth grief services to the community (regardless of their affiliation with Cedar Valley Hospice), and case management for those living with HIV or AIDS through its Cedar AIDS Support System (CASS) program. Cedar Valley Hospice also provides the area’s only Hospice Home, a 6-bed inpatient unit for respite care and shortterm pain and symptom management, as an alternative to a hospital stay. Interesting fact: Every month it takes 93 volunteers, 30 cookie-bakers and many quilters to provide service there. With Cedar Valley Hospice you receive:

our mission and work very hard to live our tagline—‘Make Each Moment Matter’ for families,” Michaela Vandersee, executive director, wrote to the Courier. The Cedar Valley Hospice staff believes “compassionate care” is not just a phrase that is spoken, but rather a way of living and working every day to help and support the patients and families they serve. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, clinicians continue to care for patients while taking extra precautions on home and facility visits and implementing telehealth visits as needed. Cedar Valley has won Employer of Choice and Best of the Best awards from the Courier for several years. The organization also recently won the national Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award. “With more than 95 percent of our patients residing in their own homes, it explains why families have continually voted Cedar Valley Hospice Best of the Best in Home Health, because they receive access to our experts and services – month after month – that would not be possible elsewhere,” Vandersee wrote.

Life 101.9 FM Radio This has been a crazy year for families and business in the Cedar Valley, and that has been the case for Life 101.9 as well. However, the uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic has also provided new and exciting opportunities for this listener-supported ministry to provide encouragement and hope to listeners all over Eastern Iowa. KNWS has operated on Texas Street in The Courier Waterloo since 2020 1953, when the of the University of Northwestern (then Northwestern College) purchased KNWS-AM for $60,000 as part of their vision for a media outreach to share God’s love on radio stations around the Upper Midwest. That vision was implemented by well-known evangelist Billy Graham, who was the second president of the college. After 12 years of ministry, KNWS-FM (Life 101.9) went on the air in 1965 to expand the reach of the ministry to a larger area. The on-air team works hard each

qualities of great mentors

“Clothing you for life’s important moments!”

What to look for when seeking advice of others

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR COUNCIL | Inc.

N

o one achieves success all on their own. Many of today’s most prominent business leaders can point back to a mentor who helped guide them during the formative years of their careers. Mentors are an invaluable source of motivation and wisdom for any budding professional. These individuals can act as your guide through uncertainty and difficult career situations, and as your cheerleader when you begin to realize your goals. To help young professionals who are seeking mentorship, we asked a group of entrepreneurs what qualities all great mentors have in common. Reflecting on their own experiences, here’s what they say you should look for as you choose your mentor.

1

They ask the right questions

A great mentor doesn’t necessarily know all of the solutions to your problems, says Rachel Beider, CEO of PRESS Modern Massage. They do, however, ask the right questions to help you understand more about the challenges you face. “When dealing with a recent crisis, my business coach helped me out of my anxious head space by asking me bigger picture questions that put me in a more strategic mindset,” Beider says. “Change the questions, change the outcome.”

have vision 2 They When Piyush Jain,CEO

of SIM palm, began his entrepreneurial journey, he learned many skills from his mentor. However, what stood out most to Jain was his mentor’s vision for the future.

“He was able to project the next five to 10 years for himself and the business and follow through,” Jain says. “Vision is where all the execution becomes fruitful.”

express positivity 3 They It’s natural to sometimes feel like

you’re “behind” in your career or want to be in a better place, says Jared Atchison, co-founder of WPForms. When you start negatively comparing yourself to others, your ideal mentor should counter with a positive outlook. “A good mentor expresses positivity to ease those doubts and reassures you that, with enough dedication and work, you can be exactly where you want to be,” Atchison says.

4 They’re a great communicator

Kristin Kimberly Marquet, founder and creative director of Marquet Media LLC, says every mentor she’s had in business had one thing in common: They were great communicators. “My mentors knew how to listen and provide objective feedback,” Marquet says. “They were clear in their insight and asked questions.”

listen to you 5 They One of the top qualities of a great

mentor is an ability to listen, says Stephanie Wells, founder and lead developer of Formidable Forms. They’ll hear you out when you have something to say and are always happy to take your questions. “If you work with someone who blocks out what you say, then very little progress can be made,” Wells says. “A good mentor listens to their students and takes feedback like a pro, so they can do better with the next person they train.”

It is during the hard times when the hero in us is revealed. – Bob Riley, former governor of Alabama There’s possibly been no harder time for those who support older adults than 2020, with a virus circulating that takes aim at their age group more than any other. The circumstances have revealed many heroes at Western Home Communities, a non-profit provider of housing and services for older adults – from active and on-thego, to those in need of full-time care. “Our teams hit the ground running to tackle this virus head-on and haven’t stopped since late February,” says CEO Kris Hansen. “So much changed about how we do our jobs, and to see these employees respond and turn on a dime has been inspiring.” Western Home Communities serves about 1,400 residents in Cedar Falls, Grundy Center, Jesup, Madrid and Huxley, plus another 300 at

managed communities in Reinbeck, Denver, Sumner, Cresco and Nevada. “Our front-line employees have been fantastic,” Hansen says. “They’ve shown their dedication to residents and clients even when they’re away from work, wearing masks and social distancing so the people they serve are safer. Along with nurses and aides, it’s our dining staff, maintenance workers, housekeepers, transportation drivers and more who are going the extra mile.” The virus remains a threat to older adults, so getting back to fully normal operations will likely require effective treatments and vaccines to become readily available. In the meantime, residents routinely express confidence in the protocols being taken to keep them safe. Family members have been happy to see limited visits resume, outdoors and in a protected space. Many elements of the business have reopened with enhanced infection control measures in place, from The Grosse Aquatic and Wellness Center to Diamond Event Center, Gilmore’s Pub and Caraway Café.

Martha Rodriguez, LPN, gardens with Ken Carlo at Nation Cottage. She later used some of the backyard produce to make guacamole for residents.

Villa construction underway An expansion on the south campus in Cedar Falls went forward as planned in 2020: the construction of two new streets to ultimately accommodate 36 new villas, duplex-style living for active older adults. Construction wrapped on the first four of them and move-ins occurred midAugust on Lemongrass Drive.

Rachel Phillips of Western Home Communities “drives” an ice cream delivery truck to surprise residents of Deery Suites on a hot August day.

The Deery Suites: Recover after surgery Elective surgeries have resumed at local hospitals and Deery Suites is in demand for post-acute skilled care. “Therapy is an important part of rehabilitation after surgery, and we’re doing all of that in resident rooms right now,” explains administrator Tabitha Tjaden. “Everyone has a spacious private bedroom-and-bathroom suite with shower. We built it that way for privacy and dignity, and the design definitely helps with infection control.” Jorgensen Plaza: Outpatient therapy Outpatient therapy appointments never stopped inside Jorgensen Plaza, where clients have been distanced from one another and all equipment is disinfected between sessions. Anyone who needs speech, occupational or physical therapy can request these services at Western Home Communities, where therapists use innovative programs to pinpoint specific therapy needs and target problem areas faster.

Creativity at work Employees have been thinking creatively to help residents find joy in the midst of difficult circumstances due to the virus. They’ve gardened, exercised via Zoom classroom sessions, watched online worship services, held socially distanced thank-you parades for nurses, played hallway bingo, danced with caregivers wearing personal protective equipment, and sang along with the music therapist. Recently, a household coordinator at Deery Suites made the rounds delivering ice cream while dressed in a cardboard ice cream “truck,” to the delight of residents. “We’ve definitely seen everyday heroes emerge,” Hansen says, “and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
