Not just

Far from boring, neutral color palettes are becoming more complex and sophisticated, adding personality and a sense of calm and comfort with a hint of drama.

Farrow & Ball’s White looks like melted vanilla ice cream, proof that today’s neutrals don’t have to be plain beige.

The new B

“nudes”

eige walls. Beige carpet. Beige furniture. Dull. Boring. Beige. Blah. A neutral color scheme used to evoke sleepy yawns and feelings of color deprivation. Today’s neutrals are different. Timeless. Contemplative. Inspiring. The palette begins with the softest nudes — linen, vanilla, mushroom — and embraces the palest to deepest blues, greens, grays, browns and lavenders. As days grow cooler, you’ll see these colors (shaded, misted, veiled or clear tones) in fashion and home decor. Subdued or sophisticated, earthy or romantic, any of these modern neutrals will force you out of your comfort zone. Build on your color scheme with texture, patterns and pops of lively color to transform an ordinary room into a warm, inviting and interesting space. “A space done in neutrals can be much more creative and exciting than just layers of solids so staid they’re almost asleep. The secret is to use a few unexpected neutrals: colors and patterns that play well in the sand box with everyone else yet are full of the kind of

Texture, pattern and soft gray paint give this living room a classic, sophisticated appeal.

personality you need to give your home decor distinctive character,” says Mary Carol Garrity, author, decorating maven and proprietress of Nell Hills stores. She considers animal prints as neutrals, for example, when recreated in subtle color ways such as black and white or cream and tan. Stripes, ticking, chevrons, checks, plaids, houndstooth and graphic patterns can be neutrals. When played as the foundation of a room, a bright color or a color outside the neutral “norm” such as chartreuse or teal can make a solid statement. “Consumers are becoming increasingly color savvy and color aware,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “With consumers seeking distinctive styling and considerable substance more than ever before, it is critical that retailers and designers be aware of future color trends. To successfully entice consumers, colors and color combinations must be appealing, evocative, transformative and most importantly, ontarget.”

The 2014 Pantone color palette includes three collections that focus on the new neutrals.

Sculpted Simplicity speaks to how important shape, form and structure are to the end product and/or environment. The colors are unassuming and do not take center stage. The sophisticated tones elegantly harmonize with distinctively nuanced undertones, and include travertine, anthracite, blanc de blanc and twilight mauve, supported by an anodized brown, ethereal gray and a suggestion of silver.

Intimacy implies a certain affinity and

relationship expressed in tints and tones that are inviting in nature and softly tactile — closely connected, yet subtly different, a happy marriage of adaptable warm, cool and neutral tones. The palette includes gardenia white, lotus blossom pink, rose cloud, fawn and café crème, while pale lavenders and opal gray are effectively approachable.

Physicality speaks to the colors of power

and energy counterbalanced by the presence of hues that express the necessity for introspection and calmness. Forged iron, satellite gray, antique moss and gothic olive, strong, solid colors, are interplayed with the healing shades of herbal lavender, grayed grape, rosy brown and a quiet, ephemeral foggy gray. If you like beige ... You are warm, appreciate quality and are carefully neutral in most situations. You are usually welladjusted and practical.

If you dislike beige ... Beige represents to you a beige existence — boring and tiresome. You hate routine.

If you can dream it. We can design it. Kitchens • Entertainment Centers • Bathrooms Accessories • Timbergate Interior Doors • Countertops

2014 neutrals Sherwin-Williams surveyed “swirling currents” of color to create a 2014 paint palette that includes a remarkable number of neutrals for interiors and exteriors.

Reason

Logic or good sense? Gray is the new black, and math is the new sexy. The palette includes a range of grays from soft — Crushed Ice (SW7647) and Agreeable Gray (SW7029) and Earl Grey (SW7660) to deeper tones such as Classic French Gray (SW0077), Gauntlet Gray (SW7019) and Peppercorn (SW7674).

Diaphanous

Light, delicate and translucent. Picture a pearl veiled by chiffon: a gleam behind gossamer fabric. Delicate colors that are strong but soft with whispered hints of brown, pink and mauve — Malted Milk (SW6057), Spun Sugar (SW6337) and Sandbank (SW6052).

Curiosity

Strange, unusual or wondrous. Something’s brewing on the spectrum, but inspired by nature and an invitation to see things in new ways. For example, shaded and grayed plums and browns, such as Antiquarian Brown (SW0045), Exclusive Plum (SW6263) and Quixotic Plum (SW6265).

Intrinsic

Belonging naturally, essential. As the global melting pot slowly blends the world into one stew, there’s growing interest in preserving individual cultural traditions — before it’s too late. Rich and deep, colors range from Polished Mahogany (SW2838) to Ceremonial Gold (SW6382) and a traditional, dark blue, Georgian Bay (SW6509).

Ivory Coast inspires patterns, motifs

Designer Nomi Franklin’s (www.nomiinc.com) fascination with the ancient and diverse cultures of the world provides the springboard for Cote d’Ivoire, her second exploration of Africa’s Ivory Coast. Inspired by decorations found on ancient artifacts and ceremonial objects of the region, that influence is prominent throughout the collection of six woven patterns. Congo, Cowry Shell and Yoruba are highly stylized intricate patterns, each one a modern-day interpretation of a tribal theme. Oshun, Raffia and Yemaya are textural depictions of the region’s terrain and natural composition. Colors conjure up visions of the rugged beauty and magical landscape of the region. Indigo and African Grey are inspired by the tradition of using indigo dyes in African textiles throughout the centuries. Chocolate brown represents the heart of agriculture, the soil. The burnt oranges and softly hued yellows, tangerine, cantaloupe, saffron and canary are inspired by the intense heat of the desert, the vivid sunsets, fragrant spices, sweet fruits and indigenous plants. The textural quality of cloud white is flaky like coconut meat.

Clearly,

a trend is developing Acrylic resin furniture, once the darling of modernist and ultracontemporary decor, is staging a major comeback. Although Philippe Starck introduced the Louis Ghost chair in 2002, interest in transparent furnishings has moved in fits and starts. Now it’s being embraced again. You’ll find lamps, desks, chairs, tables and other home decor items — usually called by brand names Lucite or Plexiglas —being reinterpreted for an elegant look that is clean-lined, visually clutter-free and surprisingly ageless.

Nature meets modern

Moth-wing light fixtures? Thunderhead wallpaper? If you’re an armchair naturalist, you’ll love one of this year’s big home decor trends. Artists and artisans have captured flora, fauna and even meteorology in media such as photography, illustration, metal and clay. The designs, translated into wall decor and furnishings, range from startling to serene. Christine Facella has used her experience as an illustrator and model maker at New York’s Museum of Natural History to inform her collection of porcelain animal skulls. The accuracy and intricacy of her work result from sculpting up to 20 molds for each piece. Facella portrays many creatures of the North American wilderness, including coyotes, bobcats and beavers. The skulls are a compelling meld of antiquarian curiosity and contemporary objet d’art. The teeth on some gleam with 14-karat-gold luster. www.beetleandflor.com

Clinton Friedman’s garden in Durban, South Africa, is home to more than 250 trees and 150 succulent species. Desiccated leaves, freshly pulled roots and labyrinthine flower heads all serve as material for his close-up photographs. West Elm has previously collaborated with Friedman on a pillow collection; this season they’ve got his 28-inch, square, white-framed prints of aloe plants. The oversize spiky succulents look like flora — or perhaps even fauna — from another planet. www.westelm.com

Parisian designer Gilles Caffier uses ceramics as the medium for pieces like the Turtle Lamp, whose earthen-hued base evokes the plump, ridged profile of a turtle shell. He makes textured stools and vases in matte ivory or graphite that resemble coral reefs, or perhaps barnacle-laden pier posts, or maybe octopi tentacles. That’s the wonderful thing about nature: so much scope for imagination. www.gillescaffier.com

Abigail Edwards, a British designer, created her nature-inspired wallpaper for the home. She’s launched a new design called Storm Clouds — ominous thunderheads printed on a gray or blue background, with white or copper metallic lightning bolts. Her Brambleweb paper depicts an Art Nouveau-meets-Gothic swirl of brambles tipped with tiny metallic thorns. And Wilson’s Crystals is inspired by the work of Wilson Bentley, who spent half a century photographing snowflakes. The wallpaper features an intricate print of 30 snowflakes. Edwards also does a mural consisting of 18 ceramic tiles digitally printed with dragonflies darting or sitting on lithe, curling branches. www.abigailedwards.com

{Little Prairie Girl}

By Natalie Meester In summer, the old dough bowl I found at a flea market sits on the dining room table filled with sand and seashells. Now I feel the breath of autumn each time I step out the door, filled with anticipation of chilly days, cozy sweaters and warm blankets. It’s time to leave “the beach” and transition into a new season. That dough bowl comes in handy as a centerpiece and serving piece. I’ve filled it with potato chips for parties and floating candles for family dinners. It manages to look beautiful however I chose to fill it. For fall, I want an organic, natural look of found objects, not an arrangement. Nothing could be easier. These types of arrangements look just as good in trays, wire baskets, decorative vintage bowls, platters, apothecary jars, clear glass canisters, wooden boxes, even cylindrical vases. Start by layering in larger objects, then fill in around them with medium and smaller ones. I chose antlers, baby gourds and pumpkins, acorns, pine cones, chestnuts, buckeyes, oak leaves, branches and a few votive candles. Weaving in and out is a battery-operated light strand. I’ve filled another bowl with decorative string balls. They’re easy — and addictive to make!

You’ll need: Styrofoam balls, mixture of sizes; natural and colored jute or cotton string, hot glue and hot glue gun, straight pin. 1 Make a small knot at the start of the jute or string. Place a dot of hot glue and attach the knot to the top of the Styrofoam ball. Secure with straight pin, if necessary. 2 Begin wrapping jute or string tightly around the ball, gluing every inch or so. Keep wrapping and gluing until the ball is completely covered. 3 Finish by gluing and tucking the end piece under. 4 To make two-toned balls, glue two colors of string onto ball side by side, then tightly wrap strings around ball in a swirl, making sure not to overlap colors, until ball is covered. 5 Add decorative elements to balls by gluing string in swirls or curls or other patterns on top of finished string balls. 6 Use a hand-held hair drier on high heat to melt away “hairs” on jute. Come up with your own fun ideas. Dried beans and large seeds look great arranged and glued in a uniform pattern. Revise, Refresh, Reclaim

Making a DIY chandelier is a simple craft project that pays big style dividends. These two ideas from Fig & Frolic’s Becky Hiatt and Jenny Boevers have elements of whimsy and quirky fashion. One is made from an old light fixture with multiple hoops once adorned with long fringe. The second refurbishes an old chandelier. You may need to rewire lights if cords are frayed or they no longer work. Directions are easy to find on the web.

black spray paint, binder clips, bulldog clips, paper ephemera such as pages from old books, postcards, magazines, etc. 1 Snip off or remove all fabric, fringe or beads from hoops. 2 Reattach inner hoop to outer hoop using 4 12-inch strips of thin wire. 3 Spray paint both hoops black. 4 On outer hoop, there are usually small holes spaced 3 to 4 inches apart around the hoop. Attach a binder clip about every 6 inches using a small bolt, washer and nut. If there are no holes, you may need to drill them. 5 Using bulldog clips on inner hoop, clip pieces of ephemera, starting with large background pieces. Place smaller pieces in front for layered effect. Then clip ephemera to the outer hoop. 6 Check for balance in color, texture and size. Can trim to desired length. Options: Use the chandelier for special occasions to feature the honoree or event, holiday, etc.

Chandeliers

hang in foyers and above dining room tables. You’ll also find chandeliers in kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, powder rooms, porches, even walk-in closets. Suspended over the dining table, it adds polish to the setting. When the light is dimmed, a soft, glowing atmosphere like candlelight is created. If equipped with a downlight, the chandelier provides task lighting for the table and accent lighting for a centerpiece. The American Lighting Association says the chandelier size should fit the room’s scale. Too large and it’s overpowering; too small and the look is awkward. To make sure the chandelier is the right size for the room, consider: › Ceiling height. Taller ceilings demand larger fixtures. › Size and shape of table or island you plan to suspend the fixture above it. › How big is the room? Take scale into account. › What form or design? Light, airy fixtures tend to look larger. Dining room In the dining room choose a chandelier that is 6 inches narrower than the smallest width of the dining table. If your table is 48 by 72 inches, the recommended width of the fixture is approximately 36 inches. The chandelier should hang approximately 30 inches above the tabletop in an 8-foot ceiling. For each additional foot of ceiling height, add one inch. In a 10-inch ceiling, the chandelier should hang approximately 32 inches above the table. Other rooms Measure the width and length of the room. Add the two numbers. The sum should be the diameter of the chandelier in inches. For example, a 12- by 14-foot room needs a chandelier 26 inches in diameter. The bottom of a hanging fixture is at least 7 feet above the floor to allow head clearance. To shop for a chandelier › Visit lighting showrooms armed with a photo or sketch of space you are trying to light. › Look at detail and finish quality. Castings should be neat and clean. Shades or other attachments should sit in a plumb fashion. Ask the cut and quality of the crystal and durability of finishes. › Choose the correct light bulbs.

If you’re not making a mess, you’re not cooking. “That’s our motto. Each of the kids have their own cookie recipe they love to make, and my daughter is into making cheesecakes,” says the homeowner. That’s why there’s a baking zone on the island with a mixer that easily lifts up out of storage and handy access to ingredients like flour, sugar and chocolate chips. “I’m happy they love to cook because it’s a good life skill — and lots of fun.” She wanted a simple but classic kitchen, highly functional and referencing the past — beadboard ceiling, bin pull drawer handles and subway tile. It’s an eat-in kitchen with a custom-built table and bench seating, plus some funky and fashionable burlap ottomans thrown in (and they’re comfy, too!)

OPPOSITE The family gathers ’round this custom-built trestle table for meals. Extra storage is hidden inside the bench. WHY IT WORKS: Everything about this kitchen is inviting, detailed and surprisingly streamlined with all its cubbies, slots and shelves for displaying the homeowner’s collection of Mason jars, new, vintage and pretty dishware, glassware, kitchen utensils, mercury glass, silver platters, cake stands and odds-and-ends. It all seems to work together effortlessly in concert, pulled together by fresh white cabinetry and copper-flecked black granite.

Southern living

Granite in honey tones with dark flecks is a warm complement to white cabinetry.

Stainless steel appliances sound a contemporary note, including double ovens, dishwasher, and a drawer microwave.

When Georgia girl marries Iowa boy, their kitchen is a match made in heaven. Crisp details paired with white painted finishes are the foundation for the quintessential Southern kitchen. Add a few Midwestern farmhouse touches, modern conveniences and flawless details, and this kitchen will stand the test of time. They kept the stately older home in the family after the loss of a relative and 24

gave it an extensive remodel. Since the big family kitchen — with room for three boys — is the heart of the home, it got the most attention. “It was important for the kitchen to be attractive, inviting and comfortable, as well as practical. We wanted the home to work for today’s modern lifestyle and into the future,” the homeowner points out.

Whether it’s a glass of wine after dark or peanut butter sandwiches for the boys, the bar is a good landing spot.

WHY IT WORKS: A carefully laid plan makes the most of every square inch of space, and details like the farmhouse sink add personality. But the StarMark cabinetry is the kitchen’s star, providing tons of practical storage. The stainless steel refrigerator, cooktop, double ovens and microwave-in-adrawer make cooking a joy. The breakfast bar is the perfect place for quick meals.

Style & function

Square columns act as a divider between the kitchen and dining room. The big oak table is destined to be an heirloom piece because it was custom-built by a family member.

W

ith three children, snacks and meals-on-therun are part of daily life. That made a large, functional, open-concept kitchen a must for this family in their new home. “I hate clutter,” she confesses. “I like clean counter tops and a kitchen that’s easy to keep clean because the kids and I make lots of messes together. I also wanted lots of practical and accessible storage where everything has its place.” The family embraced dark finishes that suit their taste, including rich Craftsman-style cherry cabinetry, quartz counter tops and birch engineered and distressed hardwood floors in the darkest finish available.

WHY IT WORKS: The large U-shaped island is command central. There’s plenty of room for food prep and staging meals, as well as serving as a buffet for casual entertaining and a place for kids to do their homework. Storage includes a book shelf and wine rack opposite the cooktop, two spice racks, drawers for dishes so little hands can help set the table, a series of lockers down the hallway and cubbies for tucking away odds and ends. French doors on the refrigerator are practical but fashionable.

It’s all about the big picture in this modestly sized kitchen. Originally hemmed in by a penisula and cabinets and stylistically trapped in the 1970s, it is now a contemporary dream kitchen. Floor tiles set on the diagonal, cabinets that reach the ceiling and a dramatic stainless steel hood above the chef-style range visually expands the space. A floating shelf near the sink and the glass display cabinet takes advantage of every square foot for displaying the homeowner’s pottery collection. 30

WHY IT WORKS: The custom-built stainless steel table with laboratorystyle stools doubles as an island as well as a gathering spot for family and friends. Cambria quartz counter tops complement Dura Supreme cabinetry in solid cherry stained in Allspice. Slab-style doors get wow factor from contemporary rod pulls.

iMillennials, the generation that grew up on ramen noodles and Vitaminwater, now have a major appliance line designed for them by a fellow millennial. GE’s new Artistry series, available in September, features five affordably priced kitchen appliances created by Tomas DeLuna, a 27-year-old GE industrial designer. The products are targeted toward firsttime millennial home buyers, some of the 80 million Americans born after 1980 who are now investing in real estate. GE hopes that Artistry’s design, price and energy efficiency will click with the sensibilities of younger consumers. The Artistry bottom-freezer refrigerator, gas range, electric range, dishwasher and over-the-range microwave have clean lines and basic features. GE made them available in only a white or black gloss finish. Brushed stainless knobs and handles have distinctive shapes, including horizontal handles on the fridge. The stove has old-fashioned analog

clock instead of a digital one to provide a simple focal point, because the oven controls in this model were moved to the front. The GE logo has a bit of a retro feel. Estimated retail prices: refrigerator $1,099; dishwasher $499; microwave $219; gas or electric range $599.

It took just one day to transform this small kitchen from ho-hum to humdinger. When the existing counter top had worn out its welcome, at least style-wise, the homeowners looked around for an alternative to the mess of a kitchen remodeling project and the inconvenience of being without a kitchen for weeks, even months. Granite Transformations topped their list of options. The company offers an engineered granite surface that can be fitted over existing counter tops. “It looks like a totally new kitchen, and it took just a short time. They came out and measured for the counter tops and backsplash, then I chose the color, a sink and a new faucet. That was fun! The choices of color were nearly overwhelming and beautiful, and I had a hard time choosing,” says the homeowner. Keeping in mind her medium stained birch cabinets and stainless steel appliances, she settled on Mocha Reale for the counter tops, a coordinating granite composite undermount sink, oil rubbed bronze faucet and custom glass mosaic stripe in the engineered granite backsplash. A template was made from the measurements and the counter top and backsplash overlays were fabricated in the Granite Transformations shop. It took less than a day to make the installation.

WHY IT WORKS: You can easily change the look of your kitchen without demolition. “Engineered granite is easy to maintain, heat, scratch and stain resistant. It’s not porous, so it doesn’t need to be sealed,” said Teresa Egli for Granite Transformations. There is a wide range of color options to coordinate with and complement any cabinetry. The material weights 2 to 2 1/2 pounds per square foot compared to 15 to 18 pounds per square foot for slab granite, the overlay can be adhered to level counter tops on sturdy cabinets. It also can be installed over existing backslashes and other surfaces, and the firm also offers glass mosaics for details. The homeowner selected the faucet, and the GT team installed it. The client is responsible for any plumbing or electrical work. MATERIALS: Granite Transformations engineered granite counter top, granite backsplash with glass mosaic tile for interest, oil rubbed bronze faucet.

Farmhouse T

he homeowners cooked in the original kitchen for three years before committing to a complete tear-out and remodel. Green laminate counter tops were pitched, but existing (and like-new) oak cabinetry was carefully taken down and sold through a swap sheet. The dough was used to afford little extras in their new kitchen. The reoriented kitchen now has efficient work zones, a center island with cooktop and built-in buffet with wine rack as a focal point. All in all, it’s an elegant and practical “forever” kitchen with timeless appeal.

“The kitchen is the heart of our home. We like to cook together in the evenings and talk about our day,” the homeowner says.

Attention was paid to details. Cabinets are stacked to the ceiling, dressed with crown molding for finished details. Rope lighting tucked under and over cabinets is an effective nightlight.

The home’s oak trim and molding stayed, so it was important that the cabinet finish be integrated with the oak grain. A glazed finish accomplished that task. Travertine tile floors remained, too.

The double sink is Kohler in a color called Sugar Cane, a pale crystallized finish.

WHY IT WORKS: Storage options are endless in the buffet, pantry and cupboards, and there’s plenty of space to display pottery and decorative objects. Cabinetry in oyster with a soft glaze was a must for the homeowner, as was the center island. Crown molding and other woodworking details bring in the look of wainscoting without the price tag. Beautiful things come in small packages. The remodeled kitchen in this classic bungalow is no exception. Pure white cabinets and oiled soapstone counter tops create a pristine vintage look. There’s a contemporary color punch in the backsplash featuring kiwi green subway tiles and turquoise metal bar stools at the pass-through counter. The overall look stays true to the bungalow style, but is far from stuck in the past. WHY IT WORKS: Just because a kitchen is small doesn’t mean it can’t live large. Moving doors added four feet of extra space to reorient new stainless steel appliances. In keeping with historical accuracy, a passthrough was carved out between the kitchen and dining room, rather than tearing down the wall. This is a kitchen for homeowners who love to cook.

Faux real Luxury vinyl offers the look of hardwood, stone and tile

M

odern luxury vinyl is a broad category that includes wood- and stone-look products with colors and textures good enough to fool the eye. “People don’t really know what luxury vinyl or plank is, and I think they’re surprised at how good it looks,” said Amanda Fix, sales and design at Riley’s Floor in Waterloo. It’s a category that’s growing rapidly. Earlier this year, the industry website Floor Daily called it the most dynamic category. Sales of luxury vinyl hit $500 million last year — up 13 percent, Floor Daily reported. For those who don’t choose carpet, hardwood or hard tile, luxury vinyl — instead of laminate — is likely to be the favorite option. There’s even a shorthand: LVT for luxury vinyl tile, and LVP for luxury vinyl plank. And it’s become a hot — even trendsetting — item. Fix said she sells a lot of luxury vinyl planking, with tile-look luxury vinyl close behind. Companies like Armstrong, Shaw and Tarkett are putting big bucks behind promoting the look for budget-minded kitchen remodelers or homeowners interested in giving their kitchen a facelift.

style file Distinctions, Little Red Schoohouse/Transitions

Find it: 1302 First St. W, Independence, 50644, (319) 332-0273, shopdistinctions.com, (319) 334-7199, shoplittleredschoolhouse.com.

Store hours: Open daily 9 to 5 p.m. and Thursdays 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. History: The Little Red Schoolhouse is the real deal, built in 1937. Eventually the schoolhouse was moved

to the First Street location in 1985 as a retail store. Angie Manson, who once sold items on consignment at the store, and husband Rex bought the business in 1997. After her first trip to market, she realized she was “born to do this.” The store quickly became a destination for area shoppers in search of timeless furniture, accessories and gifts. “We went through all the phases — country, primitive, Colonial, evolving into a store that is as warm as being wrapped in a quilt. Our customers have an emotional response to what they see and buy at Little Red Schoolhouse,” Manson says. She received an award from Country Business trade magazine as retailer of the year in 2003, and was named business person of the year in Independence. In 2010, LRS launched Transitions to accommodate those customers who favor traditional decor but have more eclectic tastes. Distinctions opened in 2008 with a completely different flavor. Home furnishings, accessories and gifts have contemporary flair, but also are grounded in Craftsman, Arts & Crafts and other influences. It, too, has become a favorite destination and together with LRS/Transitions, are like catnip for literally thousands of holiday shoppers beginning with their Christmas Open House Oct. 30-Nov. 3.

Philosophy: The rule is, there are no rules, says Sandy Joblinske. She joined the LRS family in 2000, and now manages both Distinctions and LRS/Transitions now that Angie is partially retired. “Angie and I are ruled by our hearts, and if we love something, we want it in the stores. Our customers are the same. If you love it, you’ll find a place for it. We encourage creativity among the employees, too, and there’s such turnover of items that we’re constantly changing displays.”

Common

wood types Hickory. Heavy, strong hardwood with random natural strings and a range of natural colors ranging from pale cream to dark red-brown and nearly black, enhanced by stains.

kitchen cabinets

Birch. Straightgrained medium hardwood, fine and even texture, similar to maple; heavier, more visible grain than maple.

Alder. Softer hardwood, part of the birch family, with consistent color and stability, and easily accepts finishes and stains.

Oak —Extremely hard wood with highly visible grain pattern that varies from tight to wide witha coarse texture; natural color ranges from brownish with red highlights to light yellow with darker yellow. Grain variations evident with light to medium finishes.

Maple. Dense hardwood with a grain that ranges from tight vertical to arch shape; usually pale with soft brown highlights before staining.

what to look for

› Quality construction: Run your hands over the finish. If your nails get “caught” in the grain, the protective finish won’t hold up. › Are the boxes plywood or particle board? More expensive cabinets feel solid and look solidly constructed. › Ask the load rating on drawer glides. Check to see if drawers fully extend and are undermounted for strength. › Check shelf adjustability and thickness of shelving. What’s the difference? › Stock cabinets: Widths begin at 9 inches and increase in 3-inch increments to 48 inches. Preconstructed; many style options. › Semi-custom cabinets: Size modifications possible; many style options. › Custom cabinets: Constructed to fit any space or desire; unlimited possibilities.

Cherry. Dense, heavy medium hardwood with straight grain; red undertones; often has small knots, wormholes and pitch pockets on surface; darkens to rich patina.

what is grain? Every tree has grain patterns and marking, and each piece of wood from a tree will have its own design. “Grain” describes the texture and patterns in wood.

Fine: Inconspicuous or invisible patterns Straight: Straight, vertical patterns Cross: Lines that run parallel to the sides of the wood Spiral: Tornado or funnel-like patterns Wavy: Wave-like patterns Curly: Circular patterns Arch: Inverted U or V patterns

Bring a dish to share!

› Fill outdoor seats with pillows for comfort (and color!) and don’t forget to toss on a cozy throw or two in case someone gets a chill. › Dress your table with a seasonal motif. A quick trip to the fabric store will offer a range of fabrics in solids like red, burgundy, copper or sunflower yellow and prints and patterns that can carry your theme. Check the remnants table for real bargains (you’ll only need a yard or two)!. Toss the fabric on the table as a no-sew table runner or table cloth. Or be inventive and turn a length of leftover wallpaper from a project or kraft paper into a table runner.

Transformation is in the air. Changing leaves drift down from trees to create a colorful carpet beneath our feet while the sky turns a deeper blue, hinting at what’s to come. Autumn is the perfect season for an unforgettable outdoor celebration.

› Make an easy centerpiece by cutting fall flowers from your own garden and place them in tall urns, or fill an old bucket or watering can with fresh or faux mums or sunflowers. Cluster fresh apples, Indian corn, pumpkin and gourds for effect. Don’t forget lanterns. You can fill them with tiny apples and battery-operated candles.

› Pull out colorful tableware and sparkling glassware or Mason jars, pretty jugs and dispensers for beverages like apple cider. Cloth napkins are great, but you can opt for colorful paper napkins and plastic-handled cutlery.

1-2 containers Whipped Cream-style cream cheese frosting 1 jar caramel ice cream topping 1 cup chopped pecans Preheat oven to 350 F. Combine sour cream and milk. Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add to butter mixture alternately with sour cream mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat at medium-low speed until blended after each addition. Stir in vanilla.

Caramel Cake with Caramel-Pecan Topping 1 (8-ounce) container sour cream 1/4 cup milk 1 cup butter, softened 2 cups sugar 4 large eggs 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 56

Pour batter into 2 greased and floured 9-inch square or round cake pans. Bake at 350 F for 30 to 35 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks 10 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks, and let cool 1 hour or until completely cool. To decorate the cake, empty frosting container(s) into mixer bowl and beat on low to medium speed. This will fluff the frosting and make it seem more like homemade. Place a dot of frosting on cake stand and place first layer. Frost to edges. Add second layer and frost entire cake. Drizzle caramel ice cream topping over cake and sprinkle chopped pecans on top and sides.

These recipes are made for entertaining. Delicious Chicken Satay with Thai Peanut Sauce, flavorful King Hawaiian “Mini” Reuben Sliders and Grilled Shrimp Verde Quesadillas, all from Chef William Gerstenberger at Crossroads Hy-Vee, are perfect for fall parties and tailgating. And don’t forget dessert — our best-ever bar cookies will vanish fast, and the rich Caramel Cake is certain to be a hit! Chicken Satay with Thai Peanut Sauce

Grilled Hawaiian “Mini” Reuben Sliders

Serves 6

Serves 6

4 half chicken breasts

12 King’s Hawaiian cocktail buns 1 pound corn beef, thinly sliced 1 small can sauerkraut 6 slices thin-sliced Swiss cheese ½ cup melted butter Thousand Island Dressing, as desired

Marinade: 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, minced 2 teaspoons fresh garlic, minced 1/2 cup soy sauce 1 teaspoon red curry paste 1teaspoon fish sauce 1tablespoon dried chives 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Sauce: 1 cup chunky or creamy peanut butter 13.5-ounce can coconut milk 1 tablespoon chili sauce 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

In a bowl, whisk together marinade ingredients. Slice each chicken breast into three lengthwise slices to make 12 chicken tenders. Place chicken tenders in marinade bowl; marinate for 2 hours. Remove chicken from marinade and skewer on wood or metal skewers; set aside. Discard remaining marinade. For peanut sauce, place 1 cup peanut butter in saucepan over low heat. Add coconut milk, chili sauce and vinegar; stir constantly for about 10 minutes. Be careful not to scorch bottom. If you want more coconut flavor, add a bit more coconut milk. Set aside to cool. If transporting to tailgating site, place marinaded, skewered tenders and peanut sauce in separate plastic storage containers with lids, and take along a small saucepan. Spray grill with cooking spray. Preheat on medium-high heat. Place tenders on grill; turn after 2 minutes because they cook quickly. Tenders are done when internal temperature is 165 F and juices run clear. Use saucepan on grill to warm peanut sauce. Serve tenders with sauce.

Assemble sandwiches: Slather bun bottoms with Thousand Island Dressing as desired; then add layers of corn beef, sauerkraut, cheese, another dollop of dressing and the top bun. Gently press down on each filled bun. Preheat clean grill to medium-high. Brush both sides of each sandwich with melted butter and place on grill. Watch closely; grill 1 to 2 minutes per side to melt cheese. Serve immediately.

Grilled Shrimp Verde Quesadillas Serves 4

1/2-pound 51-60 count cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp 8 flour tortillas 3 small cans green chilies 1/2 Vidalia onion, thinly sliced 8 slices provolone cheese Ground cumin (a shake or two) Juice from 1 small lime Hot sauce or salsa Mix together shrimp, green chilies, onion, cumin and lime juice. Top 4 tortillas with shrimp mixture, then top each with slices of cheese. Top tortillas with remaining 4 tortillas. Preheat clean grill to low-medium heat. Place tortillas on grill, watching carefully, and flip after about 15 seconds. When quesadillia has a golden brown char and cheese is melted, remove from heat. Serve immediately with hot sauce and salsa, if desired.

Chocolate Chunk Blondies

Blondies have a tendency to be dry, but there are two solutions: Under-bake them a little, and store them in the refrigerator wrapped tightly with plastic wrap. Makes 12 large bars 1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts 1 1/4 pounds semisweet chocolate chunks Heat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour 8 1/2-by-12-by2-inch baking pan. Cream butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar in bowl of an electric mixer fitted with paddle attachment. Mix on high speed 3 minutes, until light and fluffy. With mixer on low, add vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, and mix well, scraping down the bowl after each addition. In small bowl, sift together flour, baking soda and salt. With mixer still on low, slowly add flour mixture to butter mixture. Fold in walnuts and chocolate chunks with a rubber spatula. Spread batter into prepared pan and smooth top. Bake for 30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Don’t over bake. The toothpick may have melted chocolate on it but it shouldn’t have wet batter. Cool completely in the pan and cut into 12 bars. treehouse is the stuff of children’s dreams. It’s a treetop observatory for watching the world go ‘round, a secret hideout for members only, and an adventurous roost for slumber parties. It also brings out the child in adults. Building a real tree house in the top of a tree isn’t for the faint-hearted. Angie and Mike Dark, co-owner of Midwest General Construction, built just such a structure in their backyard. It’s a hit with their children, Reese, 6, and Landon, 4. “I love it,” enthuses Reese, who likes popping up her ladybug sleeping tent on the sturdy treehouse floor for a night under the stars. Her recent birthday was celebrated in the treehouse and on the patio beneath it, the space transformed into a pizzeria for the occasion. Mom and dad often climb the spiral staircase for morning coffee as the sun rises. Perched in a birch tree estimated at 70 years old, the tree towered 70 feet high with a canopy so dense that it cloaked the yard in heavy shade. Nothing grew beneath it, and although the Darks didn’t want it taken down, the tree was becoming a concern.

“A treehouse, a freehouse, a secret you and me house, a high up in the leafy branches, cosy as can be house” — Shel Silverstein

“We decided to come up with a way to do something for the kids, create a place for them to play. That’s where the treehouse idea came from,” recalls Angie. The tree was cut back and now cradles the 12- by 14-foot treehouse 10 feet in the air. Three large tree limbs jut up through holes in the decking. Substantial posts support the structure, and electrical outlets make it possible to light at night. “I overbuilt it, but I wanted it to be safe and sturdy. It’s not going anywhere in a strong wind,” Mike said. The winding staircase, built by Gross Steel, was chosen over a ladder for safety reasons, and a “Do Not Enter Without Permission” sign ropes off the staircase to keep out unsupervised children. Beneath the tree, pavers were laid for a patio and wood planters built and filled with flowers. It’s become a favorite gathering place for family and friends. “It’s awesome when it’s lit up at night, and actually, I think it expanded our outdoor living space,” Mike added.

Daft for

daffodils Author A.A. Milne (“Winnie the Pooh”) once wrote that “a house with daffodils in it is a house lit up, whether or not the sun be shining outside.” It will soon be time to plant those charming spring bloomers. Plant en masse for effect or in clumps as part of a composition of tulips, crocuses, hyacinths, muscaris and guinea flowers. Mid-to-late blooming daffodils are good foils for Johnny jump-ups, pansies, columbine, alliums and other spring bloomers. Create a naturalistic landscape. Toss naturalizing bulbs in the lawn and plant them where they land. Remember you can’t mow down the foliage until it dies back. Tuck daffys into hosta beds for a pleasant surprise — daffodils bloom as hosta foliage unfurls, and hostas will eventually hide fading daffodil foliage.

DIY framed fall still-life Create this lovely fall “portrait” for a table top decoration or hanging art. 1 Start with a pretty, empty frame. 2 Cut a piece of black posterboad to fit inside the frame. 3 Remove flowers from fall-themed silk flowers. 4 Use a hot glue gun to fasten flowers to the posterboard to appear as if the flowers are “exploding” out of the frame. 5 If desired, tuck in faux berries, nuts and tiny pine cones to complete your still-life. 6 Place the frame on a tabletop frame holder or hang it.

Dig into tulips What more recognizable spring flower is there than the tulip? Plan for your color show and start digging. Plant bulbs at least six weeks before a hard frost to allow bulbs to root before winter. If the soil is too warm, bulbs may fall prey to disease.
