Yellow

Y

ellow can be cheerful and uplifting or mellow and warm. It plays well with all woods and most other colors and complements a wide range of decor styles. Whether you’re bold enough for egg yolk, clear, saturated Caribbean yellow or prefer the softer, mustardy side of the hue, yellow is worth considering. Citrone yellows, which have subtle green undertones, pair well with many blues, a fun color scheme which feels both vibrant and serene at the same time, says Julie Meyers of Decorating Den Interiors. She likes such subdued, dusky tones as Sherwin Williams’ “Blonde” or “Compatible Cream,” that create a beautiful, rich canvas. “This neighborhood of yellows ranges from creamiest whites to deepest stoneground mustard, but all wrap a room in great warmth,” she explains. If yellow — or any color — is used at least three times in a space, it becomes the accent color. But the color can be challenging to use.

“Yellow intensifies when it is used as paint on four walls of the room and can give more ‘glow’ than the homeowner intends,” notes interior designer Rhonda Staley, IIDA, of The Mansion. Woodwork, including baseboards, window casings and doors, should be white or off-white, not stained wood for best effect. “Choose the fabrics with yellow first, and select paint for walls that is lighter, knowing that yellow will appear brighter on the wall,” Staley suggests. It’s a color that wakes up a kitchen, and DeLonghi’s recently introduced Kmix collection of brightly colored counter appliances includes an energizing yellow that’s caffeine for the eyeballs. Rachael Ray, Kitchenaid and Le Creuset have kitchenware in the hue. Yellow and white is a fresh, happy combination. In a room with gray, navy, or black and white furniture, choose a cool, glossy or matte yellow finish on an accent piece and you’ve made a statement.

Remember that yellows look more intense on the wall than most other colors. Consider the light in a yellow room, both natural and artificial: › Pale yellows in north-facing rooms can look peaked, yet soothe a sunny space. › An intense, saturated yellow can overwhelm a windowless or south-facing room, but make a small powder room or entry look like a jewel box.

What our designers say

“I love to inject lively splashes of the clearer yellows into today’s very popular cool, neutral color schemes. All shades of gray are so prevalent right now. Here, grays can be kind of tricky to work with because they can come off feeling cold and drab if not executed carefully. To avoid that feeling, I like to incorporate accessories, such as toss pillows, artwork or tabletop pieces which have pops of bright, rather intense yellow.” — Julie Meyer, Interiors by Decorating Den

“I use yellows from nature to capture the perfect color. In a master bedroom I designed for clients, the mellow-yellows of tulips and roses that bloom outside their bedroom window were my inspiration. Subtle yellow wallpaper, French toile cotton chintz and an upholstered chair are contrasted with a cream bedding ensemble and cream, sky blue and leaf green accent bolster. This scheme is repeated in art and the view of their gardens. The effect is relaxing and not overwhelming.” — Rhonda Staley, IIDA, The Mansion

From lacy tealight holders to chunky, colorful platters, there’s something for everyone. You’ll find Provence-influenced colors in ceramics pieces, ranging from lamp bases to pots, an array of chic bird-patterned plates in fine china, and color-saturated glazed vessels in deep teal or cranberry. Look for matte white or terra cotta ceramic vases made of stacked spheres and polygons, and geometric patterns in subtle organic tones of charcoal, pale pink, seafoam and curry. Folk-arty small pieces make versatile little repositories for drinks, flowers or trinkets. In our own backyard, Midwestern potters are creating some of the most interesting decorative and functional ceramics available. Many of these ceramics artists will be featured at the College Hill Arts Festival, July 20-21, at 23rd and College streets in Cedar Falls. You can shop for art and support Midwestern artists!

Decorating with ceramics › Feature pottery prominently or enlist it as punctuation to other colors and textures in your room. › A piece with lots of pattern punch can be a conversation starter. › Tie a space together, picking up elements — a knitted motif or a color, say, that appears in artwork, throw pillows or rugs elsewhere in the room. you › Change out ceramics to suit the seasons or when you tire of them.

Burlap

Burlap ribbon rolls from Raz, $2.75 each, Basket of Daisies, Cedar Falls.

isn’t just for sacks anymore! This humble, utilitarian fabric is a fresh look for summer in accessories and home furnishings. Look for burlap pillows, upholstered chairs, table runners, place mats, wall hangings, lamp shades, wall coverings and more. Lengths of burlap are being wrapped around cylindrical glass vases and wreath forms, used to make bulletin boards, tote bags and mats around framed photographs and artwork. Burlap can bridge the seasons — it also looks great in fall! For DIYers, burlap can be found in a variety of textures and colors, and it usually feels rough. Read the care label, and if possible, dunk the fabric in diluted liquid fabric softener and then let dry. If possible, keep out of the washing machine — agitation might pull apart the coarse weave.

Coffee, tea,

table? Furniture Showcase

Once the repository of drinks and remote controls (and your feet when your mom wasn’t looking), the coffee table has renewed function. Wireless devices have influenced coffee table design. Some tables have built-in charging stations and, because we’re working more from home, file cabinets. “I often treat the coffee table — or what’s used as a coffee table — as a focal point, but I always use it like it’s a container, whether the table itself or an ottoman. It can ‘contain’ candlesticks, a floral arrangement, collections clustered together. It’s usually in the center of everything, so it’s where I can put a pop of color,” said interior designer Kathy Flack, ASID, of Flack Interior Design Associates, a division of Simpson Furniture. If the color scheme is neutral, she’ll toss in purple or tangerine for a little drama, perhaps in a floral arrangement or even a big ginger jar. Flack also likes traditional wood with gold or copper glazing and mirrored tops, whether it is an antique or contemporary mirror. “The coffee table is only 18 to 20 inches off the floor, so you can look down into the mirror. It gives a room depth,” she explains.

But to allow a person to comfortably get up and walk is 24 inches. › Small ottomans with flip tops: One side is a tray, the other upholstered. They function as tables, storage and extra seating. Furniture makers such as Norwalk make an ottoman/coffee table hybrid. The top is similar to an upholstered bench, but a lower wooden shelf serves as storage.

Script writing

On the wall … pillows … upholstery and more What goes around, comes around. French script — handwriting — was a popular home decor motif more than a decade ago. Now the French Laundry look has been revived as a romantic, fashion-forward trend. As our lives are increasingly overtaken by technology and the luxury of receiving a handwritten letter — in cursive script, no less — is disappearing, we’re suddenly besotted by scripts and fonts. Script-themed toile is fresh and fun, and the grain or feed sack style is charmingly vintage. Written words and phrases, postage cancellations and old-fashioned company logos and artwork are imprinted in linen, linen-look, burlap, linen burlap, hemp, ticking and cotton upholstery and drapery fabrics. You’ll also find furniture and home accents such as lampshades, pillows, trays, picture frames and more. 1 Witty, bold and romantic, the Le Inspiration Script

Freshen up!

Easy DIY projects update tired furnishings

“Frugality and practicality are still at the forefront of people’s minds right now, so updating and making the best of what you already have is a surefire way to save money and recycle,” said Rachael Liska, senior editor at Fresh Home magazine. A dull pine table can become a sleek modern piece with a coat or two of glossy black paint, for example. Enamel paint is cheap, and spray paints now come in almost any color you can imagine and will work on nearly any surface. Danielle Claro, home editor at Real Simple magazine, suggested painting a mirror’s frame with a glossy color, or taking an old wooden Windsor chair and sanding it, priming it and coating it with a fresh spring color like turquoise. Painting and staining are tried-and-true techniques, but a fresh approach is to gild, decoupage or embellish with details, decorative nail heads, leather trim, cording and tassels. Changing out the hardware on a dresser or side table is one of the easiest ways to make it over. You can also make slipcovers or reupholster a chair or sofa for an update. Hot patterns are ikat, any ethnic print and matte-printed cottons with a hint of metallic. Use wallpaper remnants to dress up furniture, cabinet doors, and of course, walls.

1

11 2 1 Rub-on decals in yellow and white along with pansy-shaped ceramic knobs button up the look of the dresser, along with painting the chair and coat tree in vibrant colors. 2 Dress up an old chandelier and chair with a coat of vibrant turquoise paint. Top off the chandelier with new shades trimmed in turquoise ribbon and cover the seat of the chair with new fabric.

Minimal accessories bring attention to the marble-and-metal coffee table, dark floors and cabinetry, and the living room’s clean lines.

N

Text | Melody Parker Images | Rick Chase othing worked. The homeowner had become queen of the returns. She purchased home accessories she thought would neutralize the builder’s yellowish-beige on the walls of their specbuilt house, but most items only seemed to intensify the color. In frustration, she’d make returns. “Things didn’t look right or didn’t look finished. I just couldn‘t pull it off on my own,” she says. After seeing photographs of interior designer Gwen Parker’s eastern Iowa home, she knew what to do. “That’s the look I wanted. I loved it, and I needed her help.” The collaboration between Parker and the homeowner has forged a friendship — and a home in a design style the Interior Chic design firm owner describes as “transitional.” It’s the fusion of traditional with contemporary or modern elements. Walls throughout the main and lower level were painted in shades of soft gray. “Changing the color made a huge difference in the overall appearance. The color appealed to me,” enthuses the homeowner.

20

The color makes white-painted trim look crisp and clean and draws attention to granite-topped espresso cabinetry throughout the home. Parker also played with layering and texture, such as placing an unusual petrified wood and metal occasional table between matching charcoal gray modified wing chairs and settling a large, square marbletopped coffee table in front of the low-slung black leather sofa. Tripod lights sound a retro note. Parker created a lounge near the bar in the lower-level family room, coordinating four deep-gray leather-clad chairs with a hammered metal drum-shaped table, and hanging colorful, contemporary lacquered art. She encouraged the homeowner to go for large-scale accessories and artwork. “It has more impact than collections of small things and looks less chaotic. Everything in a room must have impact and stand on its own,” she explains. Window coverings are in the works, as well as more changes to the lower level including a new sectional that the homeowner’s husband can stretch out on while watching sports on TV, and transforming the screened porch into a four-seasons room to increase square footage. With Parker’s expertise, the homeowner has relinquished her “return queen” title. And two new pieces — a white

lacquered breakfront credenza with Greek key design and mirrored top and a mother of pearl mirror above it — are standing pat in the foyer. “I would never have picked those pieces on my own, but they’re very sophisticated, and I just know they’re going to be my favorite pieces,” she adds.

Dramatic artwork in the master bedroom keeps the gray color scheme intact.

S

ummer cookouts at Dirk Cuyper’s rural Janesville home center around the new deck. Built by Magee Construction, the multi-level structure takes full advantage of the forest surroundings. At mealtime, the action revolves around the outdoor kitchen for grilled pizza, brats or steaks. If there’s a good game, guests can watch it on the bar’s TV. As night falls, family and friends drift downward to the lower-level firepit that already has seen its share of s’mores. “The old deck was just not functional. It was small and old and not a good use of space. We wanted a deck where we could enjoy the view from all angles and have multiple levels that serve a purpose,” said Cuyper. The homeowners chose treated wood as a better fit with the architecture of their home, and Magee incorporated big beams and large sunburst details for decorative effect. Outdoor living spaces are the last frontier for homeowners. These backyard sanctuaries have become escape hatches from the pressures of daily lives — and as stylishly designed and decorated as our living rooms. No longer content with a postage stamp-sized patio, flat deck, rickety lawn furniture and spindle-legged grills, Iowans want all the comforts — multi-level decks designed for aesthetics and function, outdoor kitchens, water features, enlarged patios, blazing fire pits and outdoor fireplaces, screened-in porches, gazebos and sunrooms and landscaping that looks great year-round. “People want to make their outdoor spaces an extension of their living space, and instead of one big, open space, we’re breaking it up and giving each space its own function. It makes it more usable and comfortable,” notes Magee’s Deb Waterman. And rather than pack up and move, many people are opting to invest in their existing homes. “People want to hunker down and enjoy their backyards. They look at their space as an outdoor room, and it’s a place they can upgrade,” says Jeff Rhea of Turf & Landscape. The large-scale sunburst motif adds style to a multi-level deck that also features an outdoor kitchen, Magee Construction.

Landscapes and hardscapes Homeowners are taking a closer look at their backyard aesthetics. “They’re tired of what they’ve got and want something totally different or want to upgrade what they’ve already got. What I’m seeing are requests for more useable landscapes with fountainless water features, gas firepits, brick walkways, taking down an old deck and putting up a new one, maybe adding a patio to it. It’s no longer the 8 by 12 concrete patio,” explains Craig Gibleon, one of three designers at Matthias Landscaping.

LEFT: Installing brick pavers and stone patios expands outdoor living space and creates nicer surroundings for walking, dining and gathering around the firepit, particularly when plants are used to soften, Matthias Landscaping. Hardscapes — decks, patios, retaining walls, etc. — go hand-in-hand with softscapes, Rhea points out. “The hardscape can look unfinished without softscape — the right plant materials. There’s been a huge evolution in choices of plant materials, too, and it all goes into creating a nice balance.” And we’re seeking privacy from the outside world, particularly neighbors. Planting screening trees, and hedges can create separation and wood, and PVC privacy fences can be both decorative and concealing. Outdoor lighting can enhance surroundings as night falls. And be honest about how much time you want to devote to outdoor maintenance. “How many hours do you want to spend in the yard every week? How many hours do you spend there now? Some people really like complicated, intricate designs and don’t mind watering, fertilizing and being outdoors all the time. Other people want a landscape that only requires a minimum amount of work,” Gibleon says. Consumers may also be surprised at the wealth of varieties and styles of natural and manufactured stone, pavers, bricks and blocks available at companies like Marquart Concrete Products, Croell and Legacy Stone of Eastern Iowa. For ambiance, think fire and water. Full-sized fireplaces transform an outdoor space into a living room, such as those installed by Dalton Plumbing, Heating & Cooling. Fire rings, bowls and pits light up the night, and McGowans Furniture sells the Oriflamme Fire Table that can

become a focal point on the deck or patio. Interest in water features is gushing — fountains, waterfalls, bubbling brooks and bird baths, and ponds can create a relaxing retreat. Limestone and granite boulders can be drilled for recirculating pumps that allow water to cascade over the stone, and pondless water gardens and features have self-contained pump and pipe systems to recirculate water.

Kevin Bailey of Prairie Creek Nursery has designed and installed water features, streams, waterfalls and ponds up to 5 1/2 acres in size. “Clients usually have in mind what they want and it ranges from custom fountains to big projects. Most people like the wildlife water brings into their yard, ducks landing in ponds, watching koi, listening to the frogs. I also tell them upfront that there’s maintenance involved to keep them looking nice,” he said.

Decks Interest in decks shows no signs of waning. “Many people are coming from green-treated 12 by 16 decks built 15 or more years ago that need lots of maintenance. They’re interested in larger decks, nice railings, multiple levels if the site can handle it, screenedin porches, incorporating decks with patios and lots of amenities,” says John Bates from Barnes Building Center. Consumers have tight budgets these days and are looking at cost, aesthetics and products. Lower maintenance costs make it more appealing to increase the size and elaborateness of a deck or outdoor space. They can also choose concealed fasteners and cable railings. Modern treated wood has better performance and maintenance qualities. Cedar, for example, can be left to turn silvery gray and is resistant to insects and rot. Redwood decks have a 25year life cycle.

Composite materials give the look of wood without maintenance issues, DeckWorks.

You can get color contrasts that add design flexibility, and the color holds true and doesn’t fade, and the material repels mold and mildew. These decks are low maintenance and just need hosing off a couple of times a year,” says Jeremy Fager of Deckworks, certified installer for Trex and Timber Tech. Both these products have 25-year warranties on the material, and as a certified installer, Fager can offer a fiveyear labor warranty. Wood decks made from treated wood will last longer.

hen summer arrives, our decks, patios, porches and backyards become vacation destinations. We create comfortable gathering spots with cozy (and practical) outdoor furniture, market umbrellas, decorative outdoor rugs, even outdoor lamps, heaters and firepits, all in the name of escape. From Mission and Mid-Century Modern to French Provençal, you’ll find indoor furniture styling moving outdoors. With only modest improvements in the economy, staying home and entertaining at home continue to be important trends influencing outdoor furniture designs. As homeowners expand their everyday living space to the out-of-doors, it makes sense that they would want to also extend their favorite indoor furniture styling to porches and patios, says Jackie Hirschhaut, vice president of public relations for the American Home Furnishings Alliance. Among the best illustrations of this trend is Century Furniture’s Maison Jardin collection by designer Richard Frinier. The classically styled frame sets off naturally distressed and curved teak wood slats, while vintage colors and French motif fabrics are reminiscent of the French countryside. Part of this move to extend indoor styling to the out-of-doors includes the growing category of fully upholstered outdoor furniture. Laneventure and Homecrest have perfected the look. The Homecrest collection is called “Bungalow” and consists of removable slipcovers over a seat cushion of durable foam that is wrapped with polyester fiber that is then encased with a water resistant ticking. But it is Homecrest’s polyurethane-topped tables that excites eastern Iowans. “This is a big change from glass table tops. The polyurethane tops are more stylish and have the look of stone. They’re never going to crack, blister, warp or rot,” says T.J. McGowan of Waterloo’s McGowan’s Furniture. North Cape’s deep-seated “Cabo” collection is also creating a stir with its sleek styling and woven wicker look that is actually made from recycled plastic over an aluminum frame. “People like the look and the durability of it,” McGowan says. Cushions are bright and colorful, too. Laneventure has expanded its fully upholstered outdoor furniture to five collections, with the Harrison sectional and Katherine dining arm chair among the newest. Summer Classics outdoor furnishings feature cushions that dry rapidly, even after a driving rain, and Sunbrella fabrics that don’t fade and offer easy care. “People are turning their patios and decks into outdoor rooms, even to the extent that they may have kitchens, fireplaces and TVs. Our season is so short that we want to take advantage of the outdoors in any way we can. If the consumer invests in products like Summer Classics, it will last for years,” says Nancy Meinders of Home Interiors in Cedar Falls.

Trendwatch We’ve seen some new little café sets in recent years that are ideal for small outdoor spaces — including urban balconies. But this trend is not necessarily a “small space” trend, Hirschhaut says. This is more about creating private, cozy spaces for you and your companion. It can include those charming “tables for two,” but it also includes luxuriously scaled loveseats and gliders, upscale chaise lounges designed to share an umbrella or drink table, and Brown Jordan’s unique “Papillon” lounge chairs.

Fabrics may have the fluid lines of scrolls, ovals and paisleys, but boxy is the benchmark frame design trend for 2012 – at least in the modern category. Everywhere throughout the Casual Market in September we saw 90-degree angles. Even cushions had squared edges. Versatility is one advantage to this look – it makes moving pieces of outdoor furniture around and creating modular seating groups really easy. So maybe this trend is more driven by functionality than style preference.

Another possible reason that retailers are dialing back the color in outdoor seating may be the rising popularity of color and pattern underfoot. Plain sisals are taking a back seat to bright novelty patterns in outdoor rugs.

There is a stunning variety of color, texture and pattern in today’s outdoor fabric choices. But you’ll see lots of shades of driftwood — sandy earth tones — and pops of color for accent pillows. Gray, in fact, is the dominant neutral for 2012. It will be paired with plum, orange or red in more daring displays, but also frequently coupled with soft shades of yellow or a mix of earth tones.

Wet basements

| maintenance | Text | Holly Hudson

W

hen the rain starts falling, the phone starts ringing, said David Martinson of Martinson Construction. Martinson is referring to the deluge of calls he receives from home owners seeking solutions for wet basements. “Most of them know they have a problem but will put up with it while it is dry,” he said. “When it starts raining, they want it taken care of.” Martinson said poor drainage is the culprit in 90 percent of the homes his company works on. Missing or damaged downspouts can add to the problem, as well as failing to waterproof the foundation. Martinson said it is something all prospective home owners should check. “Walk around the house and make sure water is draining away from the house,” he said. “It’s not a bad idea to have a contractor come out and take a look at it, too.” Martinson said his crew will come in and apply a rubber membrane to waterproof the foundation and add tile and rock to help solve drainage problems in existing homes. “All the new homes we do have that coating,” he said. Tom Cannon, of Tomlinson Cannon, said his company addresses the problem from the interior of the home. “The main cause of wet basements is surface water,” he said. “Rain soaks the earth around the foundation, ... the soil expands like a sponge and pushes the water toward the foundation. Concrete is not normally sealed properly and the pressure pushes water into the basement … and it keeps running into the basement until it is corrected. “It is very difficult to seal it out,” Cannon said. “Let it come in and then control it” 

Dark drama Bold use of deep palette creates appealing interiors Text | Melody Parker Images | Courtesy

D

ark isn’t always the absence of light. A dark palette can be surprisingly versatile. Call it elegant, dramatic and sophisticated or calm, cool and collected, but definitely call it a rich, neutral palette. “Gray is the new black” is a favorite new saying. But it can take a practiced hand and the subtle use of layering to pull it off to best effect, as shown in this home with rooms designed and furnished by interior designers Kennon Springer and Sarah Goesling of Interior Perfection. “People aren’t afraid of dark colors any longer. People respond to the palette and because gray is neutral, it has tremendous possibilities for pairing it with colors like yellow, orange, warm red, plum, soft whites that can take it in exciting directions,” Springer explained. We’re getting comfortable with all shades of gray from the softest dove to deepest graphite. Grays can lean to the blue or green side or toward taupe and brown, for example. Often more than one shade of gray is incorporated into the space. Here Springer moved up and down the spectrum from light to dark, interjecting woods for warmth and metallics for a little pop and visual interest. The walls have a subtle metallic sheen that had to be sprayed on for best effect, and rather than draw the space inward, the deep color causes the room’s edges to fall away, and the space to visually appear larger. Texture plays a big role, he said. “Once you’re in the room, you start to notice the layers and textures of fabrics, the rug, the finishes on the furniture and the lighting.” Lighting is key, Goesling said. “You need to consider the space and the natural light available, and the ambiant and task lighting you’ll need. Light plays off the sheen on the walls and the textures and can make a space feel warm or cold.” A mix of luxurious and organic accessories offers great contrast to the sleek and refined look.

Craft beer in a can? Really, it’s the ideal vessel

Stop by for an authentic Northern Italian pizza or a delicious deli sandwich, loaded with the freshest ingredients. Better yet, enjoy a glass of your favorite wine—rain or shine—in the four seasons Verona Wine Garden!

ehold the beer bottle. Useful, ergonomically pleasing, and often with certain German swing-top and whimsical Italian craft beer bottles, even works of art. I admit, I’ve purchased the occasional beer solely for the bottle. Bottles do, however, have limitations. They are fragile. Who hasn’t — immersed in a deeply philosophical, wildly gesticulating conversation that often accompanies beer consumption — knocked over and shattered a bottle, then spent weeks finding microscopic shards with our bare feet? Bottles also make a poor barrier to detrimental effects of light. Even brown bottles merely slow the molecular dance between ultraviolet light and hops responsible for the peculiar skunky odor and taste of light-struck beer. Now consider the can. Long the container of choice for your dad’s industrial-scale economy beer, it has suffered by association in the eyes of craft beer lovers. But the modern aluminum can is an ideal vessel to keep beer fresh and flavorful during the often uncertain conditions of transport and storage. Impervious to all light, with a neutral, food-grade liner between beer and aluminum wall, the can delivers only what the brewmaster puts in it — good or bad. The craft beer revolution, led by can evangelists such as Oscar Blues and Surly, is opening a second front in the fight for better beer as more brewers take on the cost of a canning line to ensure the integrity of their product. The only downside is the temptation, and occasional necessity, to drink from the can, a less than ideal vessel for tasting beer. Aroma is essential to fully tasting beer and very little of it escapes the can while consuming from it. Pack a plastic cup. No longer must we settle for the fizzy yellow stuff as excellent brews from Sierra Nevada, New Belgium and many others shoulder their way into the grocery store’s refrigerator case. No longer must we choose between our recreation and our IPA’s, our stouts, our farmhouse ales. Long live the can revolution! Prost!

O

n a warm summer day, Steve and Mary Wikert’s garden is a romantic oasis of pink, lavender, blue, soft white and green. Hundreds of Oriental and Orienpet lilies tower over a white picket fence, attracting onlookers like bees to nectar. Clematis vines clambor up and over a small pergola and arched decorative gate at the garden’s entrance. Peeking through the lush foliage, one can spy the elegant gazebo and imagine a big pitcher of lemonade on the table, ready to splash into tall, ice-filled glasses. The whole scene practically cries out its welcome. “It’s magical when it all comes together,” Mary acknowledges. “I love the free-form shape of the lilies set against the geometricshaped evergreens. I like the artistic quality of keeping a color scheme because it helps the flow, and texture and color make a small garden look larger.” The long, rectangular garden measures 66 by 66 feet and is embraced by crisp white fencing, the robin’s egg-blue siding on the house and brick, cobblestone and paver paths. Several years ago, a storm-damaged cherry tree was removed, giving Steve an opportunity to redesign the bed and install a new gate. “I like angles and curves and the juxtapositioning in the layout. It fits together like a jigsaw puzzle, and it’s easier to maintain. We make use of every square inch because every inch is important,” Steve explains. The couple are artists, educators and authors who have brought their artistic passion and love for classical details into the garden, which they began nearly 20 years ago. Decorative resin wall sculptures framed in vines hang from fence walls, wall planters overflow with blooming annuals, and garden statuary pops up in the midst of plantings, which include hostas, sedums, globe thistles, coral bells, Korean boxwoods, a Miss Kim lilac, and colorful zinnias started in pots from seeds. Mary’s favorite English roses, including David Austin’s “Mary,” “Gertrude Jekyll” and “Abraham Darby,” as well as Jackson & Perkin’s “Cotillion” and “Coronation,” produce glorious blooms each season. The deciduous contorted filbert shrub, also known as “Harry Lauder’s walking stick” or corkscrew hazelnut, is the couple’s pride and joy. Steven enjoys tending his 75 evergreens, including arborvitae, yews, dwarf alberta spruce and a Macintosh pine, scattered throughout the meticulously groomed beds. Several he has coaxed into topiary shapes. “And there’s not much weeding. I like to mulch with a mediumgrade dark bark because it visually disappears, and edging keeps things looking nice.” An etagere outside the kitchen door holds pots of herbs for cooking, although they no longer grow vegetables. “We have enough,” Mary says, laughing. “Our inspiration started with the English-, French- and Tuscan-style gardens we spied through fences and gates in Door County, Wis. Their walled gardens were enchanting, and seeing those gave us the beginning for our garden vocabulary.”

10 Tips for great-looking containers

Barbara Wise, author of “Container Gardening For All Seasons offers these tips for creating glorious potted gardens 1 Echo colors. Look for hues in one plant that can be reflected in the same container.

2 Contrast foliage: Fine or delicate foliage with straight, narrow stalks and broad tropical leaves; long linear leaves or strappy, arch-type formations with full, rounded or oval shapes. 3 Choose easy-care plants. 4 Don’t forget the pot. Wise recommends making sure all the plants you plan to put in the pot will remain in scale and that your pot size is one-half to one-third the size of the tallest plant when mature. 5 Thriller, fillers and spillers. “For your thriller, try a tall or upright focal point plant. For filler, you’ll want a plant that’s bushier or fuller. The spiller is any plant that will trail or cascade over the edge of the pot, Wise said. 6 Same needs, same pot. Choose plants with like-requirements.

Bring

7 Container care. Use lots of plants, but plant a few inches apart to allow roots to spread. Fill the container up to a few inches from the top and layer in plants, starting with large ones and add smaller ones toward the pot edges. Fill with soil as you go, making sure root tops aren’t covered with more than a 1/2-inch of soil. Water frequently, twice daily, if needed. Use a container mix for potting soil; make sure pots have drainage holes. Pinch, prune and deadhead to keep plants bushy and blooming.

tomatoes Tell-all tips for great

“That’s a beaut!” There’s no sweeter music to a gardener’s ear than admiration for their homegrown tomatoes. Try these secrets for growing a good — no — great tomato! 1 Sunshine — tomatoes need 8 to 10 hours daily. 2 Elbow room. Space plants to allow good air circulation — a longer distance than suggested on the label, if possible, to reduce fungal diseases. 3 Rotate crops. Soil-borne diseases are carried over from year to year and can infect tomatoes and other plants in the nightshade family, including potatoes, peppers and eggplants. 4 Choose sturdy, short and thick-stemmed transplants. Pluck off flowers when planting. 5 Plant in well-drained soil loosened with organic matter or compost. In pots, always start with a clean pot and fresh soil. 6 Bury the tomato stem up to the first set of leaves to encourage root growth. 7 Pinch off suckers if you like, just don’t pinch determinate varieties. 8 Keep plants moist for the first two weeks for good root growth, then begin watering deeply but infrequently. (Check containers and expect to water more frequently.) Don’t water in the heat of the day. Leaves curl up to reduce moisture loss in the heat of the day and can’t absorb water. When leaves are wilting, water can’t be absorbed by the leaves. A sign of underwatering is if leaves remain curled after the sun goes down. If it rains 1 inch or more, you shouldn’t have to water.

9 Stake plants. 10 Fertilize every other week as plants grow. Stop fertilizing when fruit sets to prevent watery fruit and lush growth with little yield.

Create your own

fairy garden

Fairy gardens — hidden beneath stout trees or proudly displayed on tabletops at in homes — are captivating the imaginations of children and adults, providing an escape into a tiny world. Young kids get caught up in the magic, industriously building homes for the fairies they believe are real. Older children enjoy working on the tiny scale: 2-inch plants and diminutive garden furniture. Adults enjoy the creativity, too. A fairy garden can be made in almost anything — an oak barrel, terracotta pot, even old luggage and basins. They also can be planted straight in the garden, on a patch of soil or a tree stump, or hidden beneath a bush.

THE

You can create a tabletop fairy garden in a lined wooden crate, plant one in a shallow bowl with drainage, or in a pot of even a small aquarium. Some gardeners make them out of found objects, such as chipped metal basins and old dresser drawers. › Use hardy plants with small leaves; herbs such as thyme and small-leaf basils work well, as do succulents, cacti, Irish moss and plants normally used for bonsai. Or miniature African violets, cyclamen and fuschia. › Fill your pot with lightweight, sterile potting soil, leaving space for watering. Mound the soil in places to mimic realistic terrain. Have four sizes of rock on hand for pathways and landscaping, such as small gravel, aquarium rock, larger stones and rock collection specimens — they make great boulders. › Sink tiny flowering plants into the soil still in their plastic pots so you can exchange them for all-year blooming. An indoor fairy garden needs light, like any other houseplant, so station it near a window. › For children, making the furniture and accoutrements out of found objects is half the fun. But some adults prefer to buy their accessories, which they can do online and at garden centers and hobby shops (look for dollhouse furnishings). › Two books offer inspiration: “Fairy Houses of the Maine Coast” (Down East Books, 2010) by Maureen Heffernan, and “Fairy Houses and Beyond!” (Light Beams Publishing, 2008) by Tracy and Barry Kane. Mix of styles creates new home with a sense of history Text | Melody Parker Images | Brandon Pollock

S

he had her heart set on creating a family-friendly, comfortable house. What she got is a home with classic good bones, a relaxing “put-your-feet-up” attitude and the “new country” style touches she loves. With two young daughters, a husband who loves golfing and a yellow Labrador retriever, it’s an active household where all fussiness is banished, and what is left is a welcoming reflection of the family who lives here. The family moved from Nebraska and fell in love with small-town eastern Iowa life. “It’s definitely a kid-friendly house in a style I call ‘new country’ with a few traditional touches, subtle and nothing overdone or too fancy. This is where we spend our time, and we’ve already settled in,” she said. The two-story house was built by Andy McClellan, with cabinetry, flooring and tile work by Town & Country Home Improvement Center. Today’s country home interiors aren’t about roosters, ducks, hearts and stenciled patterns, interior designers point out. It’s a mix of weathered, perhaps reclaimed, and rustic pieces juxtaposed against sleek, contemporary pieces. The result is a sense of history — with a twist. Daily life centers around the home’s hub, the great room, and naturally, the focal points are the fireplace and kitchen. The fireplace features a broad mantel, paneled surround painted warm antique white with a raised hearth in granite. Dark-stained cherry cabinetry flanks either side of the fireplace, and a paned mirror hangs above the mantel. “This is one of my favorite parts of the house. I didn’t want stone, I wanted wood because it was different and a little old-fashioned, but it looks very crisp and modern, too. It’s something different, I thought,” the homeowner explained. “And I love the color scheme, how it flows throughout. I don’t want every wall and surface covered with something.” “Alabaster” paint from Sherwin Williams creates a nice tension between the walls and espresso-stained cherry cabinetry and glasstiled backsplash, a mix of matte, stone and metallic tiles with copperbronze insets in the kitchen. “The dark stain and glass tiles are trends today, and cabinets in any wood species than oak or maple. We’re using a lot of cherry because it stains so well. The cabinet doors are fairly straight-lined and simple, but the darker color is contemporary, ” said Scott Staebell of Town & Country Home Improvement Center. Cabinets bump the ceiling and are topped with thick crown molding. Several upper cabinets are fronted in see-through glass to show off the homeowners’ china and crystal collection. For visual interest, the granite-topped island is painted white and adorned with decorative corbels and a bookshelf for cookbooks. Throughout the main level, flooring is distressed, wide-planked oak, again stained in chocolate, that hides wear and tear. “They wanted wood floors, and this is what we suggested for a family with a busy lifestyle. It was the best choice to give her 

Wet Basements - Continued from page 37 One of the best systems available is a subfloor drain tile system that includes a perforated tube installed underneath the floor around the perimeter of the basement, Cannon said. The system bypasses the floor and the tube directs water to a sump pump. “It is the Cadillac of basement waterproofing and comes with a lifetime guarantee,” Cannon said. The cost for such a system for the average-sized basement runs about $3,000 to $4,000, he said. Other options include a hollow baseboard system that looks like a trim board at the bottom of the wall. It captures most of the water and keeps it away from the floor, Cannon said. That system costs from $2,000 to $3,000 for the averagesized basement. Both systems work with finished basements, Cannon said, although the hollow baseboard system does not address the problem of interior floor cracks; it only deals with the walls. Cannon said his company also will address vertical cracks in a poured foundation to actually seal out the water by injecting polyurethane into a series of holes drilled into the crack, which then expands and seals the crack. That process costs about $600 per eight-foot vertical crack, Cannon said.

Prairie farmhouse

This country-flavored design, Plan HMAFAPW00730 from Homeplans.com, offers a lovely exterior and a family-friendly layout with surprising amenities. The home provides 2,875 square feet of finished living space on two floors. A wraparound porch expands the living space into the outdoors. Through the foyer, a study sits to the right; with the adjacent full bath, it can easily serve as a guest room. The formal living room on the right could also do double duty as a media zone or den, especially if modified to have doors. Further back, the dining room opens to the covered porch so that you can enjoy views while eating. The relaxed family room in back opens to the kitchen to form a casual living space. A snack bar serves three, while the breakfast nook enjoys lots of sunlight from surrounding windows. An island adds extra workspace in the kitchen, and skylights brighten the space. Step out from the family room to the porch, which extends the entire width of the house and wraps around the sides, too. The master suite forms a comfortable retreat with a bay window, dual walk-in closets, and a wellappointed bath that features a corner garden tub, separate shower and two sinks.
