Radiant orchid
ELEMENTS / COLOR PALETTE
Radiant orchid is a color that will grow on you. The tropical shade chosen as Pantone’s 2014 color of the year is a color-wheel contrast to last year’s pick, emerald green.
“It's a little different, it's a little off the beaten path, and it's not a primary color,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. "It's an invitation to innovation. The purple family offers (an) opportunity to do creative things.” Eiseman expects people will take to it quickly because it's a flattering color for many skin tones and complementary neutral colors. The runways and red carpet have already had a few orchid moments. Even menswear has seen hints of it, with Salvatore Ferragamo and Ermengildo Zegna incorporating it into ties and trims. She said the sign of success in her world is when she sees a color on a coffee maker, and one in orchid is already in the works. Use it: Radiant Orchid pairs well with natural colors such as browns, greens, neutrals, bronze, and harmonizes with black or gray. It also works well with pops of colors like shades of orange and chartreuse or as a tonal, almost monochromatic scheme.

exclusive PLUM usky, filtered violet. Elegant yet easy. Layered with romantic potential. Jackie Jordan, Sherwin-Williams’ director of color marketing has no problem describing SW’s Color of the Year for 2014, Exclusive Plum (SW6263). “It’s a beautiful balance. That’s what we’re looking for in our lives. Exclusive Plum has the coolness of blue, the energy of red and meets in the middle. It’s somewhat grayed to tone it down and give it more sophistication, but I think it reflects the balance in our lives of energy and calm,” she explained. Exclusive Plum is from SW’s “Curiosity” collection in the 2014 color forecast, chosen for its adaptability to many spaces. “People aren’t so afraid of using color in their homes now. This particular color has depth but it’s not so ‘in your face.’ It’s a darker color that can create a mood, and it can be a neutral that you can work around, too.”
How to use Exclusive Plum:
❱ For a masculine look, pair the color with copper and other metallics and dark, well-worn leather in a den or office. ❱ Layer with gold, gray, white and reflective surfaces for a romantic, dreamy quality in a bedroom. A white ceiling and white trim creates a lovely contrast to Exclusive Plum. ❱ Make a statement by pairing it with white and chrome for a modern living area. Exposed plumbing and air ducts lends an industrial chic appeal. ❱ In the kitchen this plum looks great with copper, a metal that is trending in fixtures.
AT RIGHT stripe-dot and silk plaid fabrics, Schumacher; paint from Sherwin-Williams and HGTV’s Global Spice collection; wallcovering from the SW Urban Luxe collection.

Mock croc rocks Faux croc is one of the most ontrend looks for today’s accent furniture. From cabinets to consoles to sofas and chairs, croc patterns are available in an astonishing array of materials and colors. Deeply-scored croc skin patterns are most often in leather, but also show up stamped in metal and painted on wood. From oxblood red to deep Nile blue, deep jewel-toned hues and metallic finishes add to the exotic appeal. Hooker Furniture’s Blue Nile crocembossed chest is from the Melange collection.

And the range of colors — the bright agates, the neutrals — is fun to play with. “You can be color-shy and still tie a room together or make a big statement with a finial,” she says. Thomas creates lamp finials out of slivers of malachite, howlite and agate, as well as unusual specimens like inky iridescent labradorite, creamy bluetinged chrysophase and petrified wood. The colors range from intense purple, turquoise and cranberry to light sunny yellow, snowy white and a range of striated hues. Besides aesthetics, some stones have been endowed by various cultures with special properties. The Chinese view jade as a protective stone, and it features prominently in feng shui, the ancient art of harmonizing individuals with their environment. The Vikings carried calcite, believing it aided in navigation. Native Americans considered chalcedony — the family of minerals that includes jasper, onyx and agate — capable of imparting strength and courage.
Hillary Thomas Designs' "Billy" finial is crafted from a sliver of malachite. "Norwegian Wood" finial is petrified wood.

Ottoman empire
Five ways to use a functional, beautiful ottoman
1| To put your feet up. The most obvious place for an ottoman is at the foot of a chair. They can be dressed alike or the ottoman can be covered in contrasting or complementary upholstery. You can also place one at the edge of a sofa to create a chaise lounge or use as a side table between chairs. 2| As a stylish coffee table. Ottomans come in all sizes and shapes and styles to fit into any conversational configuration you can come up with – sectionals, facing sofas, a grouping of chairs. Some styles come with removable trays and baskets for storage. 3| If eventually you tire of the upholstery or it becomes too dated for your style, it’s easy enough to choose new fabric and reupholster it. Other options: Have a slipcover made that allows you to change the look; repurpose a vintage rug or other material as upholstery fabric. 4| Beneath a sofa table. It’s an appealing look, adding importance, color and style to a sofa table. The ottoman can easily be pulled out for additional seating in a pinch. Cube ottomans are great for this function. 5| In the bedroom or (if there’s room) bathroom. An ottoman is a handy place to drop your robe at night and put on your stockings and shoes in the morning.

This year is all about creating an earthy, eclectic but refined room. Bold, vibrant colors and plaids are coming into play. Tartan is taking hold in fashion and home furnishings. The luxe lumberjack look favors an earth appeal. Mary Jo Bowling, editor of Houzz, the leading online platform for home remodeling and design ideas, based in Palo Alto, Calif., sees a softer edge emerging in patterns – a shift from graphic, geometric prints to more floral motifs in wallpaper and textiles. Overall, rooms tend to be more eclectic rather than “matchy-matchy.” Many people seem to be looking for something with character, something that holds meaning or significance. Found objects continue to be conversational pieces in the home. Homeowners are tapping into the use of wood and rustic elements – galvanized steel, vintage lighting, chalkboards and mason jars. Other pieces of nature are appearing indoors. Petrified and whitewashed wood is being used to make tabletops and frame in sofas and chairs. Anything that resembles refined driftwood is desirable. Cute-factor aside, the owl craze may be coming to a close while gold gets a revival. “In late 2013, we saw more and more brass and gold-tone hardware,” Bowling said. “It’s very, very popular. I think that’s going to be a continued point of popularity in 2014. After all these years with stainless steel, chrome and silver tone things, it’s looking really fresh.” It’s not the polished brass of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. It has come back with a touch of patina. Bowling added that black and gold work well together. They can add drama and glamour to a room. The burnished brass also pairs well with wood elements.

Statement pieces Look for handmade, repurposed and Made in America to be BIG. Natural, organic, sustainable and earth-friendly are all part of the picture. You’ll also see more handwritten, patterned designs and raw materials in crafts. I especially like the wood stump table/ottoman with caster wheels at thenester.com. Another hot trend is mixing more vintage with traditional style pieces to keep the look funky and fresh. Those vintage pieces – great-grandma’s oval ironstone platter or Uncle Joe’s metal trunk from the military – keep the conversation going. You’ll also see more handwritten, patterned designs and raw materials in crafts. Bold, strong and fun colors can make a statement in your home, but it can also become a bit overpowering and just … too … much. “Radiant Orchid” may be Pantone’s color of the year, but for most of us, it’s a color that may best be used in small doses. Think a pillow, picture frame, lamp base or other accessories for a pop of color. My personal choice for color of the year is indigo blue. It covers the gamet – peacock, cobalt, aqua, indigo, even soft blue and deep, dark navy. Blue paired with coral orange is simply stunning.

Fig & Frolic rules
1} No fear. Embrace color. Don’t take half-measures and don’t settle for something safe. If you want bright red, go for it. 2} Take one item and paint it, then mix it with the things you love. 3} Pick a palette that works with your home décor. Even traditional décor can use a pop of color. At Fig & Frolic, we love bright colors. We will do some white, neutral and softer colors, but we always come back to those bold hues. 4} Color can reflect the mood we want to set in a particular room or space, and sometimes the juxapositioning for a colorful item adds impact. 5} Matchy-matchy is boring. 6} Be passionate about your choices. 7} Remember, it’s only paint. If it’s a mistake, rethink it and try again.

A bright green desk? Painting an ornate picture frame in passion red? If the idea of bringing those kinds of bold color splashes into your home makes your knees quake, you aren’t alone. Color can be intimidating. But we’re here to tell you, color is what gives reclaimed and repurposed furniture and accessories “wow” factor. Painting is a huge trend. We see it everywhere – painted kitchen cabinets, painted bathroom vanities, painted furniture. Almost anything found, reclaimed, repurposed and reused can stand a coat of paint. We’re not advising you to paint a $1,000 cupboard or family heirloom. The patina and original condition of an antique adds value. But those old oddsand-ends of junk furniture, especially ones with good construction and details, are great for painting in fun colors.

layed to exquisite perfection in this home's great room, the vibrant look is surprisingly calm but spirited, too. A little like the homeowner herself, says interior designer Jean Phipps, owner of Surroundings in Iowa City. She has been working with her client for more than 20 years, helping guide the traditional brick home's many changes over time. "She does love bright colors – in her clothing, her home, everything she does. Bright colors can be hard for some people, even if they say they love color. They are hesitant about incorporating it into their homes." The great room easily can carry off the charismatic palette with pizzaz and elegance. The space is visually stimulating and refreshing, like a bracing tonic, but far from overpowering. In this instance, it's all about the chosen hues and effective layering of pieces. Orange sherbet and spring green-colored walls set the stage for the lime sofa with its crisp pink piping, a quartet of plump ottomans in soft orange and spring green gathered to do double-duty as both coffee table and additional seating, a colorful rug underfoot and lush window treatments. Next to the sofa, a bombe chest painted soft celery green sounds a revved-up traditional note and helps ground the room. A pair of orange club
chairs offers a cozy conversation area. "You do have to be careful with color so it's not cutesy or matchy-matchy. Art helps with that along with the use of texture and pattern – fabrics, exotic woods, interesting accessories – and furnishings that have tailored, clean lines," Phipps explains. "We also had to make sure that the furniture and fabrics can hold up to three active grandchildren. Every square inch of this house is used; there's no spot that's off-limits." Color flows easily throughout the open-concept space. The dining nook near the kitchen makes its own color statement in vivid pink with white-painted, built-in corner cabinets for contrast. A glass-topped rattan table, adorned with a centerpiece of striking Stargazer lilies, is paired with chairs upholstered in tufted off-white and pink. A primarily white kitchen is restful but far from boring. Pineapple, orange and white fabric covers bar stools, and there's a pass-through view of the garden room on the opposite side. Playful, large-scale polka dot upholstery dresses white rattan and wicker furnishings, punctuated by pink fringed pillows, the very definition of whimsy in the garden room. A pair of chairs in matching zig-zag stripes makes a nice counterpoint to the dots. The garden

room was built onto the home about 15 years ago when a new master suite was added to the upper story. The soaring conservatory windows lend an indooroutdoor appeal and afford an enviable view of the property's colorful garden plantings and flower-filled containers and garden art. Chaise lounges and other outdoor furnishings make it seem more like a tropical escape than an Iowa patio. In the family room, there's a table for occasional card games and relaxed seating areas, a black grand piano and a built-in desk with plenty of shelves for books and collectibles. Soft yellow patterned fabric with pink and chartreuse accents carries the overall color scheme into this casual space. Twig art above a rustic chest is a conversation starter.
Tips of the trade
Surroundings' Jean Phipps offers this advice: ❱ Embrace color, but “be careful so it doesn’t seem cutesy or matchy-matchy.” ❱ Artwork is an important element for style and finish in room décor. ❱ Fabrics, exotic woods, interesting accessories and furnishings with tailored, clean lines are effective foils for strong color choices like those used in this home.

The formal dining room is used most often for holiday gatherings, featuring cane-backed chairs and a marble-topped buffet. In the traditional living room, a pair of Bergere chairs in soft pink and club chairs in pale green are a perfect counterpoint to the striped silk curtains. The garden-themed foyer is an altogether appropriate entrance with its tall, curved metal and marble table and white tile floor grouted in gray. f there is a first rule of color, it’s probably “go with what you love.” Then the second should be “find your inspiration piece.” Whether it’s an area rug, fabric, accessory or other inspiration, it’s the thread that pulls together the vision for a particular room or entire home. Bright, colorful and graphic, the foil imaging artwork by contemporary artist Kimberlee Rocca sets the overall tone for this Rocca-built home. Rocca is a pioneer in this new printmaking process, and her artwork references Art Nouveau, Surrealist and abstract motifs. The 3,180-square-foot home is a modern mix of Craftsman and cottage influences. The idea was to create upbeat interiors that turned on the charm, working within the boundary of the home’s existing pale gray and white color scheme. After selecting a pair of horizontal Rocca prints for one wall, interior designer Rhonda Staley pulled the dominate color – teal – for the largest piece of furniture in the room – the chenille sofa.
But this isn’t your mother or grandmother’s teal. This new incarnation is more jewel-like in its intensity, and the color pops against the crisp white woodwork and reclaimed-look hardwood floor combining hickory, oak, cherry and walnut. “There is lots of beautiful light coming through the windows and with the art, the choice of a teal sofa was easy,” says Staley, IIDA, from The Mansion in Iowa City. Anchoring the seating area is a soft gray and white area rug in a stylized Quatrefoil motif, echoed in the raised pattern on a pair of chairs. The white coffee table set just off center between the sofa and chairs, and draws attention to the marble fireplace and built-in cabinetry flanked by a pair of transom windows. Floating opposite the seating area is a 5-foot-diameter round glass-topped pedestal table. The shape repeats the dramatic drum chandelier above it. The table can seat up to six people, and the soft-white slipcovers on Parsons dining chairs can be easily removed for laundering.

he home office, it seems, is going the way of the fax machine. With the widespread use of wireless internet and portable devices like tablets, it’s common now to send spreadsheets and emails from any room in the house – not to mention the nearest coffee shop. In fact, among major home renovation projects, home-office improvements provide the puniest return on investment when a home is resold, according to Remodeling magazine’s 2013 “cost vs. value” report. So instead of collecting dust, many families are finding more inventive uses for these rooms and alcoves, such as game rooms, dressing rooms, small theaters and more. When making over a pre-existing office, interior designers often recommend preserving any built-in features such as shelving or cabinetry.
HOME OFFICE Idea 1: If the room is large enough, create a billiards room. Find a small (7-foot) pool table to place in the center of the room. If there’s a wood counter, retrofit the top with a waterproof material such as stone for an elegant bar. Add bar stools, a high-top cocktail table and a pendant lamp over the pool table.
r u o y g n i Exceed . . . s n o i t a expect by design.
Idea 2: Give a smaller office a second life as a luxe dressing room. If there isn’t shelving, install a wall of shelves for shoes, sweaters and T-shirts and portable racks for hanging clothes. Keep the décor minimalist with a neutral paint color, a pair of sconces and a tufted ottoman in the center of the room. If possible, dangle a small chandelier above the ottoman. Add a floor mirror and vanity, if space allows, and accessorize with vintage hat boxes, a dress form or antique trunk. If the room has windows, install window coverings for privacy and to protect your clothing.
Idea 3: One of the most obvious uses for families with children is creating a kids’ homework hub, says Pam Ginocchio, co-founder of the children’s design blog Project Nursery.

Give each child a workspace: A small desk in a fun color with clip-on lamp and comfy swivel chair. Create a comfortable reading nook on the floor with beanbags. Appoint one wall as a place for scribbling ideas or displaying artwork by applying a layer of magnet paint and then chalkboard paint from floor to ceiling. If there are no shelves, install mounting floating shelves and display books with coves that will entice young readers, photos of pets and toys. Allow a computer for older kids’ homework but try to banish video games and other distractions.

CLOSETS
Your dream closet
Spring 2014
38
losets are those tight, messy places where we reach in and grab something off the hanger and hurriedly shut the door before something falls out – or konks us on the head. Sure, we occasionally take time to “get organized,” usually after we’ve yanked everything out of the closet in a frantic, last-minute search for that turtleneck, sweater or skirt we’d planned to wear but can’t find now. We pitch, we fold, we hang, and then we promise ourselves that “this is how it’s going to stay” until the next cataclysmic wardrobe malfunction. Creating the closet of our dreams takes time – and it can take a little or lot of money, depending on what it will take to make your dreams come true. So let’s forget about the sorting and folding business – we all know the drill. If you’re truly bursting at the seams, it may be time to sit down with a qualified contractor and talk options like transforming a spare room into a dressing room, finding space for a walkin closet or installing a storage system. On a budget? There are plenty of do-it-yourself storage systems, too, that are customizable, easy to install and affordable.

LOFT LIVING
Loft living By Melody Parker Photography by Brandon Pollock
"Downtown … things will be great when you're downtown. No finer place for sure, downtown, Everything's waiting for you."
iving downtown for nearly a decade, John Hayes needed a bit of the pioneering spirit at first. Since then development has continued, more neighbors have moved in who share his sensibilities, and there is more hubbub and hustle-andbustle with restaurants, night spots and businesses. Hayes, a business owner himself, can't imagine living anywhere else. "I like the urban lifestyle. I like the busyness and seeing what's happening downtown and being part of it," he says. "At the same time, I can close the door and feel very secluded from everything." Last year, Hayes relocated from his earlier downtown digs into a larger 1,850-square-foot apartment. The loftlike apartment, newly renovated by JSA Development, puts him squarely in the center of downtown Unoccupied since the 1960s, the space is now filled with Hayes’ favorite things – an extensive key-wound clock collection, black lacquered piano and flowing, open space ideal for entertaining. "I like the architecture and historical aspects, but I also like the trendiness, too. I wanted to create a place that was warm and felt comfortable. The hardwood floors appealed to me, and I love the Mission-style details in the cabinetry and doors.” There's also the industrial chic of exposed ductwork and two large skylights, one in the kitchen and the second in the guest bedroom. Walls are painted an attractive shade of harvest gold complemented by Hayes' framed black-and-white photography of downtown landmarks. It gives the entrance hallway a retro feeling that fits his old-meetsnew style of furnishings.
In the open-concept living area with its 14-foot ceilings, black leather chairs and sofa and chrome and glass tables in contemporary shapes are gathered into a casual conversation area anchored by a salt-and-pepper rug. "Leather is easy to care for, and just seems to fit the space. It's a nice transition and pulls everything together nicely," he explains. "Glass-topped tables give the illusion that the space is bigger, and chrome just looks good with black furniture." A vintage china cabinet is filled with glistening crystal. A Howard Miller grandfather clock stands in one corner, its face and style paying homage to architect Frank Lloyd Wright. On the opposite wall, the upright piano gleams. Tall windows beckon to the outdoor deck, a major score for Hayes, with its soft-sided tub. In warmer months, the space is ideal for grilling out and relaxation. He also plans to use the brick wall opposite to project movies. "Having the outdoor space was a major reason I decided to move from the other apartment in the Repast building.” Eventually Hayes plans to display more of his clock collection. "Every clock is key-wound – not one of them takes a battery. People don't realize the technology involved in these old time pieces that is centuries old and we still use it today," he enthuses. Centered between the conversation grouping and kitchen is a counter-height dining table with an extension leaf on either side. The deep, rich color adds vintage character and makes a nice contrast with the kitchen's dark granite-topped island and countertops. Stainless-steel appliances and rod hardware are modern classics, giving the kitchen practical polish. LED lighting

Modern and timeless classics mix and mingle in this masculine, urban apartment. The railing and newel post are architectural salvage, and Mission-style cabinetry have simple, polished lines.
LOFT LIVING along the bottom edge of the cabinets act as a nightlight, making it easy to navigate when lights are low. "And crown molding on top of the cabinets makes a magnificent difference," he notes. "The bar also is handy for entertaining. It's just a very accessible kitchen." Laundry facilities are tucked away behind Mission-style doors in the hallway, and Hayes is particularly pleased by the extra bedroom and bath this new apartment has given him. In this bedroom, he displays his grandfather's World War II photograph and medals, as well as a collection of old room keys from former Waterloo hotels such as The President. "It's nice to have the space for overnight guests and storage, and I can always turn it into a home office." Hayes has maximized storage in the master bedroom. There are two closets and the added bonus of drawers beneath the bed frame for extra storage. Windows are at least 8 feet tall, flooding the space with sunlight. Hayes is active in downtown redevelopment, and now serves as chair of the design committee. "It's been amazing to witness the changes happening downtown in the last eight years. Developers and investors like JSA and others and the city have done a lot and will do more. I love the history of downtown Waterloo and being involved in the transition." H&G

he stunned crowd at Sotheby's burst into a rare round of applause when a museum-quality Persian carpet sold for a recordsetting $33.76 million last year. "It was extraordinary and wonderful and the carpet deserved it," said the auctioneer, Mary Jo Otsea, Sotheby's senior consultant for rugs and carpets. The hand-knotted, 17th century Clark
Sickle-Leaf carpet, with a red ground and dark blue border, is "still dazzling to the eye," she said. While few of us can fathom spending so much money on a showpiece, Oriental carpets, made in countries from Turkey to China, are available at various prices and have long been a popular part of home decor. "Older carpets look great with
everything," Otsea said. "They add great warmth by their color and design. Older carpets have a wonderful patina and character that you can't capture in a new piece. Each one is different. You're not going to see the same thing when you go into everyone's house." Doris Athineos, the arts and antiques editor for Traditional Home magazine, said the sale of the Clark Sickle-Leaf carpet may inspire people to look at the carpets with a new eye, mindful that an eight-figure sum was just shelled out for one of the finest examples. Whether antiques or reproductions, the carpets work well in any kind of house or with any kind of decor, she said. "I can't imagine where a beautiful antique carpet wouldn't work," Athineos said. "I have seen them in every kind of home from minimalist to maximalist, where there's lot of decoration in the house. They add warmth to very pristine, minimalist spaces." Try one in any room except the kitchen, Athineos recommends, especially the space where people spend the most time, perhaps the media room. "They're meant to be walked on." With so many styles of design —
florals, geometrics, abstracts — Otsea recommends browsing through as many carpets as possible to find out what you like. A great carpet, she said, is the right combination of color, design, technique and tradition. Athineos advised going to a reputable store, not one that's constantly promoting a going-out-of-business sale. Ask about the return policy, as some stores allow you to buy and try, and return it if it doesn't work. If you are shopping for a machinemade reproduction carpet, Athineos suggests bringing a damp, white cloth. Part the pile and rub the cloth against the carpet to make sure no color comes off; that bleeding is the sign of a cheap carpet, she said, that won't last two years. "Reproductions can be great, but this is a carpet you do not want," she said. Don't get too hung up on a carpet's size, Athineos said; buy what you love and find a way to work it into your home. Try the layered look, she suggests, with one carpet overlapping another. "You should take the size equation out of it," she said. "Persian carpets aren't about an exact size to fit the room."

TEA TOWELS
23 ways to use a beautiful tea towel They’re versatile. They’re inexpensive. And they’re often handmade, by local artisans to boot. The tea towel is more than a dish rag or an eco-friendly substitute for disposable Bounty or Viva these days. It’s a bit of graphic art, available in a plethora of patterns and illustrated amusements. We scoured stores and websites for a range of the designs, then asked designers for these 23 ways to use a tea towel.

1} Line a bread basket. 2} Cushion the bottom of the fruit bowl. 3} Wrap up a handmade design as a hostess gift. 4} “They also make cute reusable gift wrapping, using them like we do in Japan as a furoshiki,” or wrapping cloth, Lookout & Wonderland designer Niki Livingston said. 5} Use stiffer materials such as linen in place of vinyl shelf liner. When the shelves get dusty, just toss the towels into the laundry. 6} “Especially during the holidays I love packing up fresh citrus in a tea towel and tying it off with yarn and bakers’ twine,” Culver City, Calif., textile artist Heather Taylor said. “This makes for a great hostess gift.” 7} A variation on that theme: Use a tea towel to wrap scented handmade soap and leave it out for house guests, suggested Kara Smith, president of SFA Design in L.A. 8} Use large ones as place mats. 9} “I love using tea towels as napkins or bibs for those get-your-fingers-dirty meals like crabs and ribs,” Studio City, Calif., textile designer Paula Smail said. “They look great on the table, and if they are illustrated, they become conversation starters.” 10} Use softer materials such as flour sack cloth to blot moisture when washing salad greens. Lay out lettuce on the towel, roll it like a cinnamon roll, then shake gently.

TEA TOWELS 11} Lay down a damp towel to prevent the cutting board from slipping when carving meat or rolling out cookie dough. 12} “I always use pretty tea towels draped over a tension rod for my bathroom curtains,” said Annette Goliti Gutierrez, co-owner of the Los Angeles garden gifts store Potted. “They’re super affordable, easy to clean and even a non-sewer like me can feel like she’s ‘made’ them.” 13} Put them out as guest hand towels. 14} Line your tote bags with them. They’re easier to clean than most totes. 15} Stretch and staple them over wood frames as textile artworks to hang on the kitchen wall. 16} A suggestion from L.A. interior designer Vanessa De Vargas: Have a tea towel sewn with a drawstring. Instant shoe bag. 17} Use the towel as a wine bag. Ted Vadakan, co-founder of the L.A. store Poketo, shows how to wrap a bottle at poketo.com/blog/2012/10/18. 18} Turn your favorite designs into simple aprons with twill tape. 19} L.A. interior decorator and art lover Jackie Terrell drapes them on the backs of white-slipcovered dining chairs — yet another way for her to enjoy artists’ original work. 20} L.A. designer Kishani Perera suggests sewing them into simple toss pillows. 21} Or you can sew them into seat cushions. 22} Lay one over your computer keyboard as a dust (and cat hair) cover. 23} When the designs fade or the material gets ragged, use them outside the home. Car buffs love the super-soft flour sack material to wipe down the dashboard — and as we’ve proved here, it’s so easy to find cool new designs for the kitchen again. Source: Associated Press

Woodland retreat
By Melody Parker Photography by Rick Chase
arin Leonard describes herself as a "guerrilla gardener," a plant plopper whose goal in her personal outdoor space has always been simple and straightforward: To create something beautiful. And she has succeeded, even if it has meant taking a few risks, like the Japanese maple she planted. "I knew it was a little iffy, but in a protected place, when the sunlight shines on it, it's a peak experience," enthuses the long-time gardener. "I've always loved nature and found solace in nature. I feel so at home in nature," says Leonard, who is selfemployed. She was born in Austria, which she believes gives her a natural affinity for woodland plants. She also advocates organic gardening, and the use of native plants, which she describes as an outgrowth of being a single parent of a special-needs child. "I wanted organic everything, and it was a conscious choice not to use chemicals," Over the years, the landscape surrounding her home has provided an opportunity to design beds and borders that are both pretty and practical. "Little by little over the last 10 to 15 years I've planted and added areas and the garden has evolved." Leonard deliberately set out to make her garden a soothing place. "I feel so at home in the garden, and it's such a peaceful retreat."

Several years ago, Matthias Landscaping installed new hardscape that "looks like it has always been here." There are no real straight lines in the garden, which creates a better sense of flow, and there are both physical and visual transitions to keep the garden interesting. Tabletop gardens and garden art are finishing touches. The front porch boasts a pleasant seating area that seems to invite lingering and offers a sense of seclusion. Plants provide texture and repetition of favorite plants provide continuity. Bloodroot, with its yellowcentered white flowers, is among the first plants to bloom in spring, along with bluebells and maidenhair ferns. Leonard is also a fan of celandine, a plant in the poppy family, and other favorites include hostas, Asiatic lilies, clematis, Chinese lanterns, cleome, ornamental grasses, Queen Anne's lace, coleus and succulents. Some plants, such as bloodroot and Chinese lanterns, can be invasive but she keeps them in check. "If they pop up where I don't want them, I rip them out." She especially enjoys the "Intensia" phlox series, and all of her plant choices are easy to care for and look attractive for weeks on end. "That's important because I don't have the time or energy to always be tending it," she confesses, smiling. "I'm an early riser, and I love being able to walk in my garden and snip flowers to bring in or to pull a few weeds. I walk around with a cup of coffee and see what needs attention." H&G

Brighten your indoors with a blizzard of colorful spring flowers. When winter and early spring winds and snows blow, scoop up an armful of forced bulbs like daffodils, tulips and hyacinths. Buy green. Choose potted plants with tight buds or barely open flowers, not those already in full bloom. Dress up (or down!): Potted bulbs are great displayed casually in their plastic nursery pots or wrapped in decorative foil. Or, they can easily go upscale, dolled up in myriad ways by using more decorative containers, repotting, or using the double pot cachepot technique.

WHAT'S NEW
Therapeutic TUB Stand-alone tubs are more popular than built-ins, and hydrotherapy baths are gaining converts. Some people are making room for them by taking guest bedrooms and turning them into a bathroom-dressing room, with a free-standing tub surrounded by built-in closets and other accessories. Hot tubs, too, have evolved, with new systems that create smaller bubbles, as opposed to the roaring jets of yesteryear. MicroSilk, created with oxygen-rich microbubbles, is an innovative new form of hydrotherapy from Jason International. Described as unlike any bath you’ve experienced before, these microbubbles are said to enhance and improve skin health and vitality for an improved “sauna effect.” The patent-pending process provides therapeutic levels of anions – negatively charged ions. These ions don’t just work in the water, but they’re released into the air around the bath. Anions are known to improve serotonin levels in the brain. The Jacuzzi product, at left, comes in several styles to fit any décor.

And what high-end bathroom would be complete without a high-tech toilet? Take Kohler’s Numi model, which includes a motion-activated cover and seat, built-in bidet function, charcoalfilter deodorizer and air vents at the floor to warm your toes. Naturally, there are illuminated panels with different colors that can be set for the day of the week. A remote control with a touch screen allows you to set your preferences on settings and, of course, you can play your favorite music via Bluetooth connection. Sure, it’s not cheap, with a suggested retail of $5,978. But who can put a price on never, ever having to have the seat up/seat down discussion?
