hough Slumberland just celebrated its third year in its current Cedar Falls location, the local franchise has been in the area – and the Davis family – for decades. Originally, Dick Davis helped open a corporate Slumberland store in Black Hawk Village in 1969. He became the franchise owner in 1985, the same year his son, Jon Davis, joined the business. “I started out as a delivery guy and customer service,” Jon said. “At that time, hard-side waterbeds were popular. That was a nightmare. Nearly every morning when I came in, there was a message about a leaky waterbed.” Over the years, Jon worked in the ware-

house, customer service, sales and managed stores. He now owns the franchise in Cedar Falls, 6607 University Ave., as well as one in Dubuque and another in Baraboo, Wis. Those stores were opened in 1997 and 2006, respectively. In 1996, the business relocated to 4020 University Ave. “We took over the old Mueller Furniture store,” Jon said. In 2002, Slumberland suffered a devastating fire when it was struck by lightning, which traveled down an old ventilation duct and ignited furniture in the upper-level warehouse. Sprinklers were set off, and the lower display area was flooded. Davis had just finished a remodel of the property. “We had the fire the 26th of June, and we were doing business on Saturday, the

20th of July,” Jon said in an interview at the time. “We took a store down and put a store back up again 3 ½ weeks.” Employees from other Slumberland locations (Cedar Rapids and St. Cloud, Minn.) volunteered to help get the store up and running. The store’s current location, which Jon Davis purchased in 2016, has been a huge asset. “Cedar Falls is amazing,” said Keenan Davis. Keenan, Jon’s son, is the third generation to join the business. “It’s growing. And our timing was great. The city finished the roundabouts a month before we opened. It all worked out the way it was supposed to. This site had been empty for nine years. Business is great for us here. “We’re the only furniture store in Cedar Falls,” he said. “We’ve been on University Avenue since 1969. How many businesses can say that?” Though Keenan’s grandfather, Dick

Davis, retired in 1998, people still ask after him. “He was very involved in the community. Rotary and things like that. He used to hold a prayer group at the store. He definitely made his mark in town. “He’s a big car guy. He used to win titles for the cleanest car. He was never too happy with how dirty my car was.” The eldest Davis now splits his time between Missouri and Florida, when he’s not in town visiting his family. Keenan took a different route before coming back to the family business. “I got an engineering degree and did my own thing for a while,” he said. After marrying and starting a family, in 2009 he came to work for his father. He also started by delivering and repairing furniture, then moved on to sales and operations. He is now regional manager. Keenan has worked at a number of Slumberland stores.

“Each store has its own personality,” he said. “Dubuque is a value store, and Cedar Falls is a more high-end store.” Keenan appreciates the opportunity to work with his father. “He works his tail off,” Keenan said. “He’s been busting his butt since he was 18. “We’ve all been blessed because of his talent for making the right decisions. He has had the foresight to jump on opportunities. Because of that, we are one of the best Slumberlands in the country.” Keenan said it is important to him to be involved in the family business. “It gets complicated when you mix business and family, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. It was great coming back here and being close to family.” Keenan’s brother-in-law also works at the store. “I have seven kids, and my oldest is 11. In a couple of years he’ll be in back here building chairs. That’s the plan.” His father’s views on the subject are a little stronger. “I was raised in it,” he said. “Life is work, and work is life. It all has to fit together, your work and your private life. We work weekends, nights, holidays. It’s

retail. Everything is planned around the business.” “For us, furniture is family,” Keenan said.“Furniture is such a personal thing. We’re a part of our customers’ lives. And it’s a comfort to people knowing we will be taking care of them. “We had a customer who, after a year, was having trouble with a recliner. We exchanged it for them. Taking care of people is our priority. We have a lot of repeat customers. “We have one customer who comes in about every week,” Keenan said. “He likes to check out the new accents we get in. I always keep him in mind when I’m ordering.” Slumberland, like so many other businesses, has been dealing with the consequences of COVID-19. “We were closed for seven weeks,” Jon Davis said. “We have had a strong Facebook presence and have been taking online sales,” Keenan Davis said. Both Jon and Keenan were frustrated that the business was not considered essential. “Our lift chairs are a huge part of our business,” Keenan said.

“Those are not a want. They are a need,” Jon said. Since reopening, precautions have been put in place to keep customers and staff safe. “We’ve done signage, cleaning, wearing facemasks,” Jon said. “And we’re taking appointments from customers. Those have been really popular.” The good news is, the store’s online business has quadrupled. “I can’t even tell you how busy we’ve been,” Jon said. “We are scrambling trying to keep up, and our manufacturers are struggling to keep inventory up. We’re on the phones all day every day trying to find inventory.” “May was a record month for us, and June was extremely successful,” Keenan said. “We’re not unique,” Jon said. “I’m hearing the same thing from a lot of businesses.” “We carry furniture for every room in the house. Everything but appliances,” Keenan said. “The majority of what we carry is very transitional with different accents. We are working to expand our home office options, since so many people are now working from home.

“And we offer financing options with no interest.” The store also carries a wide array of rugs, lamps and other accents, as well as patio furniture. Jon agrees that customer service is the key to Slumberland’s success. Slumberland’s service shop fixes fireplaces and repairs recliners for other businesses in the area. “We’re here every day answering phones, performing service. That’s the way we’re built.” “If some of the furniture stores we competed with would have had better customer service, they’d still be here,” Jon said. Davis committed to a few things with the city when he purchased the property. For one, he agreed to repair the parking lot by 2021. That work is currently underway. “We’re ahead of schedule,” Jon said. “The next project is a new restaurant with a patio.” Jon Davis doesn’t take the responsibility of owning the business lightly. “It’s my dad’s reputation, it’s my reputation, and now it’s my son’s reputation,” he said. “It’s not just a store. It’s our store.”

SHOP LOCAL

Support local businesses & services

‌The “Locally Owned” movement encourages consumers to support locally owned business and services and shop at locally owned businesses. This is especially important as local business owners and employers recover from the COVID-19 pandemic which has had a devastating impact on communities. A community’s economy thrives when local business owners and entrepreneurs are successful and profitable. That, in turn, provides jobs and a tax base for providing services. It also enhances the standard of living and level of convenience for residents, who can shop for everything from fresh farm produce to a wide range of products made locally or sold at hometown, independent businesses. Residents also can hire service providers like plumbers and contractors and build good, strong relationships that benefit businesses and communities. Here are great reasons to buy local, be local and think local first Create more good jobs. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents.

1

Get better service. Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers. Local shops and

businesses value their customers. More products, affordable prices. Local shops sell a wide range of great products at affordable prices. Many people fall out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products and gifts available.

3

Shopping local saves you money. Marketers have done a good job of convincing us that local business equals expensive. If

4

you add travel, fees to transfer items and your time, the overall cost is often much higher. Shopping local retains our communities. People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. Most people can get to their local shops easily and this is especially important for the elderly and young generations and those without transportation.

‌ EDAR FALLS — Hall Bicycle C Co. owner Kyle Moscrip saw an opening for his business in the Cedar Valley market when Europa Cycle & Ski closed Dec. 31. “We’ve been looking at expanding for quite awhile,” said Moscrip, whose bike shop has been a Cedar Rapids staple for 122 years. The Cedar Valley is “definitely one of the places we’d looked at for awhile.” Since both Hall and Europa were Trek bicycle retailers, that limited the ability of Moscrip to open a shop here. A certain number of stores are authorized to sell Trek in a region. So, Europa’s departure created an opportunity for him. “The big thing is Cedar Falls-Waterloo area is just a really great riding community, lot of cyclists,” noted Moscrip, who recently took ownership of Hall Bicycle Co., the fourth generation of his family to run it. “It just kind of made sense for us as a business.” His company is also filling the void in a more literal way. Its shop is in the same location that Europa was for 27 years, at 4302 University Ave. in the Goodwill Center. “We looked at a number of different locations,” said Moscrip, but “fell for this location and space.” With 6,200 square feet on one level, the company has abundant showroom space compared to its similar-sized downtown Cedar Rapids building on three levels. Moving into the Cedar Falls store “just kind of worked out.” Customers who frequented Europa will also see some familiar faces among the new store’s seven employees – including general manager Joe Hackenmiller. “The majority of people work-

people to stop in while work on the building progressed, which continued until showroom doors were officially opened May 11.

I think it was the right call to be in this location,” added Hackenmiller. With both downtown areas served by bike shops, people have told him they appreciate the ongoing presence of another option along the University Avenue corridor. “Basically, we are continuing our business plan, kind of what we do best,” said Moscrip, with no ski-related sales expected. They will carry similar products as in Cedar Rapids. That includes Electra as well as Trek bicycles. Europa, which started as bicycle-only shop in 1972, was pur-

chased by Russ Clarke in 1987. Six years later, Alpine Ski & Patio merged with with his shop. It opened as Europa Cycle & Ski on Jan. 2, 1993, at the University Avenue address, which was a new location for the business. Clarke announced the store’s closure on its Facebook page. Moscrip announced plans to expand to Cedar Falls in February and started preparing the new location. But emergence of the coronavirus in Iowa delayed the company’s plans. Hackenmiller called it a “really, really crazy year thus far.” Work got underway on the facility before it was opened to the public, but people kept contacting the store about making

HOME Martin Suites revamp timed right for COVID-19

‌CEDAR FALLS — A family heirloom quilt hangs above Cindy Mayer’s bed. Another everyday quilt serves as a pretty bedcover. Keepsakes, including a Santa collection, are arranged in a china cabinet, and a low chest in the entry hall displays a few of her favorite pieces of china and decorative glassware. “It feels so homey to me,” said Mayer, a resident at the newly renovated Martin Suites at Western Home Communities’ downtown campus. Western Home Communities’ move to transform all of its nursing home rooms to private suites couldn’t have been more timely in light of COVID-19. The virus takes a terrible toll on older adults, and providing privacy for them has had the unexpected benefit of helping with infection control along with the comforts of home. Mayer has surrounded herself with furniture from her previous home, as well as cheerful houseplants, artwork and family photos. Perched in a cage is her new parakeet, Oscar, a gift from a Martin Suites staff member. “We’re trying to teach him to talk,” Mayer said, smiling. “It’s so nice to have him here.” She also

appreciates having a private suite and bath, and plenty of room to seat visitors. Previously known as Martin Health Center, the building opened its doors in 1992 for 100 residents in shared accommodations. Renovation began in early 2019 and was completed in late

a wing at a time. The residents have said that in the end, it was all worth it,” said Linda Bowman, chief communications officer for Western Home Communities. Each floor has its own living room and dining area with stylish new furnishings. Light spills into the living rooms from broad windows. A large open kitchen offers plenty of seating and residents love that food is prepared on site and the aroma wafts through the floor, reminiscent of when they cooked meals at home. Shared rooms in nursing home care are a thing of the past at Western Home Communities, Bowman said. Walls were torn down to create spacious, private suites. “This is home for residents and having privacy and their own attached bath makes all the difference,” Bowman said. “Environment makes such a difference. With just 25 residents living together and a consistent team of caregivers, our residents can socialize in a way they haven’t been able to before, like a family. When they want, they can retire to the privacy of their own space. That’s so important for well-being,” explained Wendy Ager, system integrity and regulatory compliance officer Household coordinator Stacy Roster said the new space “makes us all feel more like a family. We can all gather together, and it feels more like home. And it’s peaceful.” “It really comes down to our mission. We’re here to ‘assertively create fulfilling lifestyles,’”said Ager. “Our CEO and board of directors had a vision for this years ago. They saw the value in the household model of care and made it happen at The Cottages, Deery Suites and now Martin Suites. We’re all so very lucky to be part of it.” They’re feeling thankful, too, that no resident of Martin Suites or The Cottages has tested positive for COVID-19 and the organization hasn’t had any outbreaks of the disease, an unforeseen benefit of the move to all-private rooms.

‌CEDAR FALLS – The Cedar Valley’s newest hotel has luxury written all over it. With 44 suites, private villas and deluxe condos, guests are able to also take advantage of a fitness club, spa, mini bar and even dispensing medication if needed. But the patrons will need a ride to their “staycation,” because dogs and cats can’t drive, of course. It’s called the Aloha Pet Resort at Spa at 704 Enterprise Drive in Cedar Falls. Heather Robson, a veterinary technician of more than 20 years, is the owner. “Where things have changed in two decades, it is unbelievable how people take care of their pets,” Robson said. Robson has six employees, including a certified dog trainer, and a 12,000-square-foot space that includes an outdoor playground area with children’s toys and equipment for games and activities. Pet owners have the choice of a standard suite, a beach house suite, a private luxury villa or a deluxe cat condo. The cat area includes windows to the outdoors where there will be squirrels and bird feeders for entertainment. Everything is personalized at Aloha, Robson said. “We understand that a 10-month-old golden retriever is going to have a different demand of a stay than a 14-yearold Boston terrier,” she said. Deluxe amenities include TVs

with dog channels, including a channel for dogs with anxiety. Cameras in the room allow the owner to check in on their furry friend through an app on their phone at any time. Daily Snapchat, emails or text photos also are offered to stay connected. “I’d want them to be treated like how my dog would be treated because we don’t have any children, so we have a house full of animals, and I want them to be able to have a positive experience,” said Madi Leeper, a groomer at the resort. The Lani Spaw has grooming

a n d pampering packages, including nail painting, epsom salt soak, blueberry facial and massage. The Beach Club is a special area for those recovering from injuries who need to use the indoor restroom. Luxury spas and doggie day cares are trending across the country, Robson said. “In a big city or a metropolitan area, this is nothing,” she said.
