Once considered an exception, zero waste initiatives have become more popular than ever as they are an effective means to manage waste streams and recapture materials. Sorting Stations & Signage
To ensure participation and to eliminate confusion (which will reduce contamination), it is important to have readily available sort stations sufficient for all waste streams with effective signage and messaging in addition to on-going educational messaging engagement with employees, fans, residents, etc. When implementing sort stations and signage, be sure to consider the following:
• Consistent color coding for signs and bins
• Photos of products on signs to help eliminate confusion

• Effective sign placement (for example, above sorting stations)

Multistream Systems
The first step to designing a successful zero waste program is understanding the waste management services available in your area. You will need to determine what is acceptable for each material stream and how its collected. This includes considerations for organic diversion (post-consumer food scraps, proteins, compostable food packaging) and co-mingle recycling. Although the most common is a three-stream sorting system of compost, recycling and land fill, a variety of sorting stations are available with up to seven different waste streams configurations.
