Lili Boulanger, Hymn au Soleil
Text: Casimir Delavigne
Let us bless the power of the resurging sun. With all the universe, let us celebrate its return. Crowned in splendor, it rises, it soars aloft. The awakening of the earth is a hymn of love.
Seven steeds, which the God can scarcely keep in check, Set fire to the horizon with their burning breath. O abundant sun, you appear!
With its fields in flower, its mountains, its dense woods, The vast sea burning with your fire, The universe younger and fresher, The mists of morning are sparkling with dew.
Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco, A este sol peregrino
To this wandering sun sing glories, young one
With passion and grace, with joy and contentment, sing to it, young one. That golden orb lights up the heavens, young one. And then live in its rays, take joy in its light.
Divine Peter, your glories today quiet my voice, that is overwhelmed because of the great light. From East to East your majestic glory travels so that every dusk is the beginning of the new birth of the sun. Today under your protection, the adoration awaits, that I deserve to receive you in this home and be a tool for your love.
Orlando di Lasso, La nuict froide et sombre
Text: Joachim du Bellay
The cold and somber night, covering with dark shadow the earth and the skies, As sweetly as honey dripping from the sky, pours sleep into our eyes. Then the glowing sky, a call to labor, reveals its faint light.
Eriks Esenvalds, Stars
Text: Sara Teasdale
Alone in the night
On a dark hill
With pines around me Spicy and still,
And a heaven full of stars Over my head
White and topaz And misty red;
Myriads with beating Hearts of fire
The aeons Cannot vex or tire;
Up the dome of heaven
Like a great hill I watch them marching Stately and still.
J. S. Bach, “Christ lag in Todesbanden” BWV 4
Text: Martin Luther
II. Verse 1 - Chorale
And I know that I Am honored to be Witness Of so much majesty.
Christ lay in death's bonds given over for our sins, He has risen again and brought us life; therefore we should be joyful, praise God and be thankful to Him and sing Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
III. Verse 2 - Duet
No one could defeat death among all humanity, this was all because of our sins, no innocence was to be found. Therefore death came quickly and took power over us, held us captive in his kingdom. Hallelujah!
IV. Verse 3 – Solo
Jesus Christ, God's son, has come in our place, and has done away with sin, thereby taking from death all his rights and power, nothing remains but death's form; he has lost his sting. Hallelujah!
V. Verse 4 - Chorale
It was a strange battle, that death and life waged, life claimed the victory, it devoured death. The scripture had prophesied this, how one death gobbled up the other, a mockery has been made out of death. Hallelujah!
VI. Verse 5 - Aria
Here is the true Easter-lamb, offered up by God, which was, high on the cross' trunk roasted in burning love, the blood marks our door, faith holds it against death, the strangler can no longer harm us. Hallelujah!
VII. Verse 6 - Duet
So we celebrate the high festival with joy of heart and delight, which the Lord radiates upon us, He himself is the sun, that through the splendor of his grace illuminates our hearts completely, the night of sin has disappeared. Hallelujah!
VIII. Verse 7 - Chorale
We eat and live well on the true Easter bread, the old leaven shall not exist next to the word of grace, Christ will be our food and nourish the soul alone, faith will live in no other way. Hallelujah!
