30th ANNUAL MEMORIAL CONCERT

Irving H. Cohen 1925–1989 Dr. Irving H. Cohen received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from New York University. After many years teaching music in the New York City area, he came to West Chester University in 1969 as professor of music in the Department of Music History and simultaneously taught double bass and tuba students through the Department of Instrumental Music (now the Department of Applied Music). Dr. Cohen served as both chair and member of many University committees, as well as on the Faculty Senate. He was acting director of the School of Music from 1982 to 1983. He loved West Chester University and did all in his power to enhance and enrich it. In addition, Dr. Cohen was visiting professor of Music at Gratz College in Philadelphia and Vice President of the National Jewish Music Council. He was a member of many professional organizations, including the American Musicological Society, the Ethno-Musicological Society, the Association of Jewish Musicians, and the Guild of Temple Organists. He was a recipient of the Legion of Honor Award of the Chapel of the Four Chaplains. He lived an exemplary life of goodness, integrity, concern, and care for others, mingled with intellectual brilliance and scholarly endeavors. In his kind, gentle manner he influenced the lives of many, especially his students of all ages. They reveled in his vast storehouse of knowledge and sterling personal qualities. Many students felt the impact that “Doc” had on their lives and were grateful for his support and wisdom.

PROGRAM MAY NIGHT OVERTURE (1879) ...................................................... N. RIMSKY-KORSAKOV (1844–1908) Piece Profile: “May Night” is a comedic opera based on a book authored by Nikolai Gogol (1809–1852). The opera tells the story of a father’s and son’s fight for the affection of a woman, and the overture is performed as a “prelude” to the rest of the work. Many historians consider this piece to be Korsakov’s way of proving he hadn’t strayed from Russian Nationalism during a time when he was studying western classical music. CONCERTO FOR FLUTE AND ORCHESTRA IN D MAJOR, OP. 283 (1908) ....... C. Reinecke (1824–1910) III. Finale. Moderato Morgan Turner, flute (WCUSO Concerto Competition Winner) Piece Profile: This concerto was Reinecke’s last work. He served as a professor and conductor at numerous European conservatories for 35 years. Reinecke focused his full attention to composition after his retirement from teaching. He is best known for his piano playing, and for his flute concerto and sonata. PIANO CONCERTO IN A MINOR, OP. 54 (1845) ............................................. R. Schumann (1810–1856) I. Allegro affettuoso Yanzhima Tsybikova, piano (WCUSO Concerto Competition Winner) Piece Profile: The first movement of this, Schumanns’s only piano concerto, was originally written as a single movement “Fantasie.” The “Fantasie” (and thus the concerto) is inspired by the composer’s love, yearning, and joy for his wife, Clara, the first performer of the piece. Robert Schumann’s career as a composer began when a hand injury interrupted his budding career as a concert pianist and forced him to shift his focus. He suffered from what would now be classified as severe bipolar disorder, and periods of mania and depression likely find a voice in his compositions.

World Première CONCERTO FOR TWO CELLOS, STRINGS AND PERCUSSION (2021) .......... O. MARINESCU (b. 1965) I. Balkan II. Forest Dream III. The Isle of Dance Ovidiu Marinescu, Ally Paino, Lia Criscuolo, Carlos Martinez, soloists Piece Profile: Composed in The United States and Brazil in 2021, this piece draws inspiration from Romanian and Bulgarian folk music as well as Scandanavian, Irish, and Romanian dances. It quotes a few of Marinescu’s previous works: a piano trio entitled “The Journey” as well as “Rorrim no. 1” for piano and cello. The vernacular of composer Joaquin Rodrigo (1901–1999) and a ninth century Gregorian chant also inspired the composition of this work. ~Piece Profiles written by Natalie Repper, WCUSO violinist.~ Many thanks to the skilled work of the Creative Committee of the WCUSO: Bonnie Calhoun: Executive Administrator Olivia Flickinger: Marketing Specialist Natalie Repper and Bryan Lynch: Concert and Outreach Specialists Millie Slifer, Sharon Chen, Tom Fitzpatrick: Specialist Assistants Carlos Martinez and Michael Repko: Treasurers Talita Solís: Librarian
