WCU GLOBAL MUSIC RESIDENCY Korean Music and Beyond: Lecture Recital gamin, piri, taepyeongso, saenghwang
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2022 WARE FAMILY RECITAL HALL SWOPE MUSIC BUILDING 8:15 PM
PROGRAM INTRODUCTORY REMARKS ..................................................................................................
Dr. Hayoung Heidi Lee ARIRANG .......................................................................................................................................
gamin, saengwhang “Arirang” is a song of love and longing, and has been sung across the lands of Korea through the passing of thousands of years. The most representative of Korea’s original folk music, it has been recreated through various different musical interpretations (Tori) in each of Korea’s diverse local regions. Tonight’s performance will show the most basic, instinctive beauty of Arirang, with the unique melodies and rhythms of versions from different region. The melody of “beautiful sorrow” as expressed in Arirang is sublimated at times in the touchingly tragic, at times in the liveliest happiness.
DAE-CHITA ...................................................................................................................................
gamin, taepyeongso Ch’wit’a, meaning “blowing and striking”, signifies military band music. Daechwita refers to a largescale performance to announce the presence of the King or for a parade of troops. Chwita appears in murals dating from Goguryeo (circa 37 BC - 668 AD) and in records about Baekje (18 BC - 660 AD), which tells us that it was performed during the Three Kingdoms Period. Conical oboes(taeyongso) which only play the melody, brass trumpets(nabal) and shell trumpets(nagak) sounding a single note like a drone, not continually, but intermittently, cymbal, gong and drum were used in the front band.
SINAWI............................................................................................................................................
gamin, piri Much like jazz, sinawi is a type of instrumental ensemble music derived from shaman music and reflects the improvisation and the musical spontaneity of the musicians. Within fixed melodic modes and rhythmic patterns, this music demonstrates a soulful and high artistic caliber in both rhythm and melody, while supporting traditional dance movements. The music and the instrumental sonorities represent the constituent elements of the shaman ritual. Through the musical expression there are progressive stages such as an invitation to the deity, the spiritual amalgam between the deity and people, and the return to daily life.
