Translations Introitus Grant them eternal rest, Lord, and may perpetual light shine on them. A hymn, O God, praises you in Zion, and a vow is paid to you in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer; all flesh shall come before you. Grant them eternal rest, Lord, and may perpetual light shine on them. Vlčí Stopa Dark the night! The old captain seeks the wolf’s trail. Strangely, the trail turns into the manor grounds! The following night, until dawn, the captain, alone and in silence, keeps watch with his loaded gun. All around is thick fog as far as the eye can see. The captain, lost in his thoughts, twirls his grey whiskers. “Damn it, this wasted night, I’d rather be home!” And there in the snow glints a bright light! Terrible thoughts seize the captain, thoughts dreadful as hell, endlessly bombarding him, like a flock of vultures around a corpse! Is that the wolf howling, or is it the icy wind through the trees? Again… do I hear the wind, or a window opening? “The devil! That’s the bedroom window where my wife sleeps!” His young wife, lovely as a rose, his young wife, a joyful dove… Could she be untrustworthy? Could she? His wife, so lovely, could she be untrustworthy, his joyful dove? Look, in the light, those two shadows playing; see, two white hands opening the window. Look, one dark shadow leans in, and the other leans into an embrace! Look at the union of those impassioned lips! The captain can hardly restrain his frenzied grief, his eyes full of tears, he checks his gun. He lifts the rifle to his trembling cheek. Ah! A loud gunshot! Perhaps the kiss is eternal! Today the captain tracked down the wolf!
