Our concert today is dedicated to the memory of two jazz icons that we lost this year: Sammy Nestico and Chick Corea. Sammy Nestico, who wrote our first tune “Fancy Pants,” was an Army veteran and a Pennsylvania native. He is perhaps best known for his many years of work with the Count Basie big band, and most students in jazz bands all over the world have played many of his original compositions and arrangements. Mr. Nestico was awarded a “Distinguished Medal of Honor” for his lifetime of support for Music Education by the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. Chick Corea, composer of “Spain,” is a multi-Grammy award winning artist and composer who collaborated with a wide range of the biggest names in jazz throughout his career. He was inspired by classical and Latin music, as well as jazz, and is known for various Electric and Acoustic bands that he led along the way. Spain is his best-known work, and it has become a staple for jazz music educators everywhere. These two amazing musicians will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
