TRANSLATIONS Psalm 13 How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long shall I keep planning in my soul and experience a daily sorrow of heart? How long shall my enemy be higher than I? Consider and answer me, O Lord, my God: enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep in death: Lest my enemies say, “I have overpowered him.” Lest my foes rejoice that I am overthrown. But I have trusted in your unfailing love: my heart rejoices in your deliverance. Let me sing to the Lord because he has dealt generously with me. To Music The mellow touch of music most doth wound. Doth the soul when it doth rather sigh than sound. (Robert Herrick) Come Hither, You that Love and hear me sing of joys still growing. Green, fresh, and lusty as the pride of spring. And ever blowing. Come hither, youths that blush and dare not know what is desire; And old men, worse than you, that cannot blow one spark of fire; And with the power o my enchanting song, Boys shall be able men, and old men young. Come hither, you that hope and you that cry, leave off complaining: Youth, strength, beauty that shall never die are here remaining. Come hither, fools, and blush you stay so long From being blest; And mad men, worse than you, that suffer wrong, yet seek no rest; And in an hour, with my enchanting song, You shall be ever pleas’d and young maids long. Come hither, you that love. (John Fletcher)
The Shepherd to His Love Come live with me and be my love, and we will all the pleasures prove That hills and valleys, dales and fields, And all the craggy mountain yields. And we will sit upon the rocks Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks, By shallow rivers, to whose falls Melodious birds sing madrigals. And I will make thee beds of roses And a thousand fragrant posies, A cap of flowers, and a kirtle Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle; A gown made of the finest wool, Which from our pretty lambs we pull; Fur-lined slippers for the cold, With buckles of the purest gold; A bed of straw and ivy buds With coral clasps and amber studs: And if these pleasures may thee move, Come live with me and be my love. (Christopher Marlowe) Miserere Mei Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your great loving kindness. And according to the multitude of your mercies, blot out my iniquity. Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgression; my sin is ever before me. Tibi soli peccavi To you only have I sinned, and done evil in your sight: that you may be justified in your words, and be vindicated when you are judged. Ecce enim in iniquitatibus For behold, I was conceived in iniquities; and in sins my mother conceived me. For behold, you have loved the truth; the obscure and hidden elements of your wisdom you have made known to me. You will sprinkle me, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; you will wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. To my hearing
you will give gladness and joy; and my humbled bones shall rejoice. Turn your face away from all my sons; and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your countenance, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation; and uphold me with a steadfast spirit. I will teach transgressors your ways: and the wicked shall be converted unto you. Libera me de sanguinibus Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, God of my salvation; and my tongue shall extol your justice. O Lord, you will open my lips: and my mouth shall proclaim your praise. Quoniam si voluisses sacrificium For if you had desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: you will not delight in burnt offerings. A sacrifice to god is a broken spirit: a humble and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Benigne fac, Domine Grant kindness to Zion, O Lord, according to your good pleasure: that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up. Then you will accept the sacrifice
of righteousness, the oblations and whole-burnt offerings; then they will lay bullocks upon your altar. Laudate Dominum Praise to the Lord all you nations, Laud him all you peoples. For his mercy toward us is great and the truth of the Lord is everlasting. Praise the Lord! Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Psalm 116) Sure on this Shining Night of star-made shadows round, Kindness must watch for me this side the ground. The late year lies down the north. All is healed, all is health. High summer holds the Earth, hearts all whole. Sure on this shining night I weep for wonder, wan’dring far alone of shadows on the stars. (James Agee)
