elcome to the 2023-2024 Wells School of Music Concert Season. We are thrilled to present another jam-packed year showcasing our incredible faculty and talented students. On the cover, we are featuring our Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band to celebrate their historic upcoming performance on New Year’s Day at the 135th Rose Parade® in Pasadena, California! We are looking forward to seeing our 340-member Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band process down Colorado Boulevard on New Year’s Day 2024 in front of 750,000 live attendees and over 25 million viewers on television!

On the inside cover you will see a new piece of artwork by WCU alumni Al Moretti, class of 73’. You can find this amazing 7X5 foot painting in the entrance of our Wells School of Music Welcome Center. Al Moretti’s painting pays homage to our rich musical history including Dr. Jim Wells, Dr. Charles Swope, and an image of one of our West Chester State Normal School ensembles. Please visit our building to see this new work of art and all of the wonderful paintings adorning our hallways and library of famous composers created and donated by Al Moretti and curated by retired faculty member John Baker.

There are few places where you can experience visual and performing arts in outstanding performance venues like West Chester University. We hope to see you soon!

In our season-opening concert, the Wind Symphony presents Sergei Prokofiev’s classic March, Op. 99, Kelijah Dunton’s stirring Master of Fate, and Michael Daugherty’s Niagara Falls. Two rarely heard Grainger works – the Duke of Marlborough Fanfare and Faeroe Island Dance open the Wind Ensemble’s portion of the program followed by Erika Svanoe’s colorful Steampunk Suite. In celebration of its 100th birthday, the concert concludes with Edwin Franco Goldman’s On the Mall march.

Composer Viet Cuong joins the WCU Wind Bands to kick off the spring semester. The Wind Symphony opens the program with Katahj Copley’s Astra followed by Cuong’s Sound and Smoke. Strange Loops by BJ Brooks introduces the Wind Ensemble’s presentation and the music of Viet Cuong is featured once again with percussionists Craig DiGiamarino, Anthony Maldonado, David Sabella, and Jacob Scheidt leading a performance of his remarkably creative Re(NEW)al for percussion and wind band.

The Wind Bands at WCU are honored to be hosting the Philadelphia Wind Band Festival as part of Music for All’s Affiliate Regional Music Festival initiative. The Philadelphia Wind Band Festival is modeled after the Music for All National Concert Band Festival and seeks to provide an artistic and educational environment through performance, clinics and feedback from a panel of nationally recognized clinicians. It is our aim to bring the Music For All National Concert Band Festival’s life-changing student and director experiences to our region. Let Freedom Ring by Ryan Nowlin opens the Concert Band’s performance. Stephen Danyew’s Into the Silent Land and Henry Filmore’s His Honor add to this special evening. The Wind Symphony will proudly feature the winner of its 2024 Concerto Competition along with Percy Alderidge Grainger’s Children’s March, Morton Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium, and David Maslanka’s Give Us This Day. This will be conductor M. Gregory Martin’s final concert at West Chester University with his upcoming retirement in the summer. The Wind Symphony wishes to conclude this memorable event with a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s “Make Our Garden Grow” from his Candide Suite.

The West Chester University

Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band is a group of 300+ students that proudly represents West Chester University and the greater West Chester community. Comprised of students from more than 60 different majors, the marching band involves students from every segment of the campus population and is the largest student organization on campus!

In addition to performing at local and regional parades and exhibitions, the "RamBand" has performed at prestigious events including the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Nashville Christmas Parade, National Football League games, Philadelphia Thanksgiving Parade, and Bands of America Regional and Grand National Championships! This year, the band will travel to Pasadena, California to perform on a worldwide stage at the 135th Rose Parade®!

The West Chester University Golden Rams Marching Band has earned a national reputation as a leader in the marching arts and was named the recipient of the 2019 Sudler Trophy. The Sudler Trophy is presented biannually to a university marching band that demonstrates the highest standards of music performance, precision marching, and innovation in show design and is considered the "Heisman Trophy" for college marching bands. West Chester University is one of only 32 schools in the United States and the first NCAA Division II School to receive the award!

After an impressive series of three lectures in the fall of 2022 by visiting professor Jeremy Jordan – mixing Wagnerian transcriptions, piano technique and improvisational practice techniques – we are launching a new annual lecture series, aiming to shine a light on regional artists and their artistic vision.

Ron Thomas (b. 1942) Composer and Jazz Pianist

Ron is recognized for the scope and breadth of his influences and interests. Ron entered the Manhattan School of Music in 1959 where he studied composition with Vittorio Gianinni, Nicolas Flagello, and Ludmila Ulehla. He studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen in the Spring of 1964 at the University of Pennsylvania. He studied (Jazz) with Art Murphy and Roland Hanna. Ron is grateful for the friendship and influence of John Cage and Herbie Hancock. He studied composition with Stefan Wolpe and Raoul Pleskow at C. W. Post College where he received his Master’s degree in 1970. In 1972 Ron recorded with Pat Martino (Pat Martino Live!) and Eric Kloss (One, Two, Free). He has an extensive catalog of his own projects found in the Vectordisc and Art of Life Records catalog.

Festival Headliner concert not to be missed! The Criterions play an entire evening of Bob Mintzer’s music, with the composer/ arranger/saxophonist himself. Bob currently holds the Barbara and Buzz McCoy endowed chair at the USC Thornton School of Music. Bob is a 30-year member as saxophonist with the Yellowjackets. He is also the chief conductor of the WDR Big Band in Cologne Germany. Bob has written over 500 big band arrangements, several jazz study books, orchestral and chamber works. He has played on over 1000 recordings and has performed with Tito Puente, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones Mel Lewis Big Band, Eddie Palmieri, Jaco Pastorius, Mike Manieri, Randy Brecker, and the New York Philharmonic.

With more than 200 concerts annually, the Wells School of Music is looking forward to welcoming you to campus (or via live stream) for an upcoming performance. Parking For events taking place between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday, please RSVP to musicinfo@wcupa.edu to obtain a parking pass via email. In case of an emergency, please notify an usher for assistance.

TICKETS

Most Wells School of Music events are free and open to the public. A few special events will have a nominal ticket charge with the proceeds earmarked for music scholarships and ensemble expenses. Ticketed events, unless otherwise noted, will be coordinated by Student Services Inc. (SSI) located in Sykes Student Union on campus. SSI ticket prices are $12 for Adults, $7 for Seniors, and free for WCU students with ID unless otherwise noted. Please note the Holiday Program is a flat $12 for everyone. Seating is General Admission except for the Holiday Program. For SSI ticket information please visit wcupatix.com or call 610.436.2266. Free parking is available in the student parking lots behind the E.O. Bull Center for the Arts and Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre (M-Lot and Matlack Parking Structure) during the summer and winter, and for all Fall and Spring semester evening and weekend events. Student parking lots are enforced Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM during the Fall and Spring semesters. Employee lots are enforced 24 hours year-round.

All performance venues at West Chester University utilized by the Wells School of Music are equipped with elevator and ramp access. As space can be limited, please be sure to notify the box office in advance if you require special accommodations for seating. For events off campus, please check with the respective venue regarding accessibility and accommodations.

SMOKING POLICY

Smoking or carrying a lighted pipe, cigar, cigarette, e-cigarette, vape or any other type of smoking paraphernalia is prohibited in all university buildings. Smoking is only permitted in designated smoking areas on campus.
