We welcome you to visit Hartman Creek State Park! As park superintendent it is my privilege and pleasure to invite you to explore and enjoy the many wonders our park has to offer.
Wau-King Trail – This is a 4 mile paved pedestrian and bike trail that connects the City of Waupaca with King and the Chain O’ Lakes area. One end of the trail is located near Shadow Lake in Waupaca by lower South Park where in the summer you will find parking, bathrooms, and a small shelter. The other end of the trail is located in King near the Wisconsin Veterans Home. Enjoy walking this trail in either direction. While in King be sure to check out their many shops and restaurants as well at the Wisconsin Veterans Home. Road Biking Routes – Several routes available ranging in length from 4 to 35 miles. Ice Age National Scenic Trail – Several segments traverse the Waupaca Area including sections in Hartman Creek State Park, Emmons Creek State Fishery and Wildlife Area, and Skunk & Foster Lakes State Natural Area. Tomorrow River State Trail – Converted railroad bed travelling from Plover to Manawa with access in Scandinavia just a short drive north from Waupaca.

The River Ridge Trail is part of a plan to preserve urban natural areas or “greenspace” in a non-motorized trail system that winds throughout the Waupaca Area. The first trail segment, a scenic loop of 1.6 miles, opened in fall of 1996. Since then, over 22 miles of trails have been designated. Bikes are allowed only on limestone or blacktopped surfaces. The trail lies in the tension zone between Wisconsin’s northern and southern eco-regions, an area of unique biological diversity. By linking parks and other public and private lands, the community and its visitors will be able to enjoy the wealth of natural features for years to come.

Tails & Trails – Waupaca’s Off-Leash Dog Park
E1578 County Road Q, Waupaca. Tails & Trails provides a safe, 30-acre enclosed, off-leash environment where people and dogs can hike and play without the worry of traffic or a beloved pet running away. Many dogs have no yard to play in and owners may be working all day. Now, after a long day, dogs can run free, play fetch, swim in the pond and commune with nature. Tails & Trails provides peace of mind in a healthy environment. Located on County Road Q just west of County Road QQ. Hours: Sunrise - Sunset. Rules, fees and more information can be found at www. WaupacaDogPark.com
Tomorrow River State Trail
30 mile trail from the Village of Plover to Manawa developed along an abandoned railroad grade with a crush limestone surface. Bicyclists and horseback riders 16 years of age and older are required to have either an annual or daily trail pass in order to use the trail. Daily trail passes are available along the trail at self registration stations and annual passes can be purchased at the Waupaca or Portage County Parks Departments. The trail is open to bicyclists, hikers, joggers, and horseback riders year round. Snowmobiles, skiers, and dog sledders may use the trail during the winter. No ATV’s or other motorized vehicles are allowed on the trail, and dogs must be leashed at all times.
Wau-King Trail
This 3.5 mile trail runs from Waupaca to King. It is a paved trail that allows foot and bicycle traffic along with roller blade and other non-motorized transportation. THINGS TO DO
Holly History Center Courtesy of Craig Libuse
Waupaca History
For nearly 10,000 years, the Menominee Indian tribe occupied 10 million acres, including much of Waupaca County. In 1848, a final treaty with the Menominee relinquished the last of their lands, including Waupaca. The following year, five men from Vermont travelled west from Plymouth, Wisconsin in search of new lands. Before long, they journeyed up the Waupaca River, finding “The Falls” and making camp near the end of what is today North Main Street. As the city grew, “The Falls” was named Waupaca, taking its name from a Menominee word meaning, “the quality of light, or morning light on the water.” Waupaca steadily grew around the water, harnessing the power of the falls and welcoming many more settlers, including many Danish and Scandinavian immigrants. And just like those first settlers, people today continue to visit Waupaca for its river and lakes, abundant resources and endless possibilities. Holly History & Genealogy Center
321 S. Main Street, Waupaca. The Holly History & Genealogy Center is an excellent resource to learn about the history of the Waupaca area and research family histories. Waupaca Railroad Depot
525 Oak Street (County E), Waupaca. (just north of the train bridge) At one time, the Waupaca Depot was a significant part of the Waupaca community and the first thing seen by travelers when arriving in Waupaca. In 1907, after a fire destroyed the previous building, the Wisconsin Central built a brand-new depot for this important tourist and shipping location. In 1987, the railroad closed the building and it sat empty until 2004 when the Waupaca Historical Society purchased it. Since then, the historical society has worked to restore the building to its former beauty. The Waupaca Railroad Depot features railroad displays, model train layout and several outbuildings, including an original Soo Line potato car. Open Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend on Saturdays, Sundays and summer holidays from 12-5 pm. Also open for special events, rentals and tours by appointment. Yellowstone Trail
Chief Waupaca Sternwheeler Courtesy of Craig Libuse
City of Waupaca. In 1912 the Yellowstone Trail became proposed as America’s first transcontinental highway across the northern portion of the country – stretching from the east coast at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts and ending on the west coast at Puget Sound, Washington. The name derives either from the people using the trail to reach Yellowstone National Park, or because of the stones painted yellow to mark the trail. The Yellowstone trail entered the City of Waupaca by what was the Bunker Hill School located on the south side of Highway 10 on County Road A. You can find signs marking the route traveling westward. The Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce and CVB has additional information about the Yellowstone Trail and what sites travelers can see passing through the Waupaca Area.
