Welcome to Booked! West Dunbartonshire Festival of Words Since its launch Booked has become well established as West Dunbartonshire’s annual literary festival offering a wide a range of topical, entertaining and stimulating events. This year’s line-up continues that tradition mixing the best Terry Lanagan contemporary writers with poets, musicians, an Executive Director of actor and fascinating talks on topics as diverse Educational Services as the Lusitania and the photography of Robert Mapplethorpe. We aim to appeal to all ages and tastes and this year present our first fantasy novelist, Elizabeth May. Fantasy has captured the wider public imagination with Peter Jackson’s popular adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit plus the massively successful Game of Thrones books and television series. Poetry features twice this year and it is a real pleasure to welcome back Kenneth Steven who has always been a Booked favourite, this year accompanied by the musician Wendy Stewart. The amazing young poet Rachel McCrum makes her festival debut performing her lyrical work. As ever crime fiction remains hugely popular in Scotland and Denise Mina, one of the leading lights of crime writing returns to Booked. Denise has a huge international following transcending her Scottish roots and her latest novel is based in Helenburgh. Booked also takes a pride in showcasing the talents of emerging writers and this year Kirstin Innes will be talking about her debut novel exploring the realities of the sex industry. We are also especially delighted and honoured to welcome Michel Faber to West Dunbartonshire. Michel is one of the most highly regarded and versatile contemporary writers and as well as receiving numerous literary awards his novel The Crimson Petal and the White was adapted by the BBC and his cult classic novel, Under the Skin, portraying an alien on the streets of Glasgow was recently released as a highly acclaimed film starring Scarlett Johansson. We have always been very keen to stimulate thought and to provoke discussion and have put as much emphasis upon non-fiction as fiction. Leading actor Alex Norton will be talking about his career in show business. This year’s Alastair Pearson lecture will be delivered by Lesley Riddoch who played such a prominent role in the recent independence referendum and she will explore how Scotland can continue to grow and flourish post-referendum. Carol Craig has written two highly regarded books The Scots’ Crisis of Confidence and The Tears of the Clyde. She has also both commissioned and contributed to a series called Postcards from Scotland exploring many of the key economic, educational and environmental challenges that confront our nation and four of the featured authors will be talking about their books. Rob Cowen first came to prominence with his well-received book Skimming Stones and Other Ways of Being in the Wild and his new book Common Ground takes forward the theme of how we can all engage more deeply with the natural world on our own doorstep. Finally, we are very excited about the Mill Girls on Tour, which is a wonderful fusion of poetry, drama and song celebrating the lives and struggles of the mill workers of Paisley and a wonderful evening’s entertainment.

Alastair Pearson Lecture What Scotland Needs to Flourish

Monday 11 May Millennium Hall, Gartocharn at 7.30pm

This year’s Alastair Pearson Lecture is delivered by the well-known broadcaster and journalist Lesley Riddoch. Lesley will explore what postreferendum Scotland needs to flourish. She has travelled extensively throughout Scotland and as well as identifying what blights the nation Lesley has considerable cause for optimism. As she says herself, “Since the referendum, bystanders have become organisers, followers have become leaders, politics has become creative, women have become assertive, men have learned to facilitate not dominate. Independent action and self-reliance have helped create a ‘can-do’ approach shared by almost everyone active in Scotland today. Scotland’s biggest problems haven’t changed. But we have.” Come along for a stimulating, humorous and even challenging take on how Scotland can become a better country.

Kenneth Steven and Wendy Stewart

Friday 15 May at Alexandria Library at 7.30pm

A Song among the Stones is a poetry sequence written by Kenneth Steven. It tells the imagined, but quite likely, story of Celtic Christian hermit monks travelling from Iona to Iceland in the 6th Century. The Icelanders certainly believe that before the Norsemen arrived from Norway, Celtic monks visited and spent the summers there. It was for them a way of escaping the ‘busy’ world of Iona, full as it was of craftsmen, artists and scholars. A Song among the Stones is written as a sequence of fragmented poems. It seeks to create the sense of a lost early Celtic manuscript, written perhaps some centuries after the return of the hermits to Iona. It is the bare bones of the story, what is left of something that might once have been much more extensive. The sequence has been interpreted by many musicians in Scotland and beyond. But first and foremost by Wendy Stewart, one of Scotland’s leading clarsach players. Wendy composed music to be woven through and around the sequence, to create a performance that lasts just over half an hour. It is intended to be a meditative journey, a pilgrimage, for the listener. www.kennethsteven.co.uk

Rob Cowen Common Ground The British Isles keep on producing an extraordinarily talented array of nature writers. Rob Cowen first came to prominence with his book Skimming Stones and Other Ways of Being in the Wild which was awarded the ‘Roger Deakin Grant’ by the Society of Authors. This book, which was co-written with Leo Critchely, was described in the Huffington Post as being a “brilliant book” and Country Walking magazine said that “it somehow manages to say something about nature that the rest of us can’t”. Rob’s new book is called Common Ground and it charts how he explores an area of common land adjacent to his hometown in Yorkshire and finds a deeper connection to both nature and the human lives led within this space. Rob’s work emphasizes how much we need to reconnect with nature as many of us did as children when we played totally absorbed in the natural world.

Elizabeth May

Tuesday 19 May at Alexandria Library at 7.30pm

Elizabeth May is a major new voice in fantasy. She was born in California, where she lived during her formative years before moving to Scotland. She has a BA in Anthropology/Sociology from Marlboro College and a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of St Andrews. When she isn’t writing, she can be found hiking through the Scottish highlands with a camera in hand. Her debut novel The Falconer received a lot of critical acclaim. SCI FI NOW described it as being “a wicked cocktail of Jane Austen’s high society and the Grimm’s fairy tales. Absolutely wonderful: a Must Read Now novel”. The second novel in the series, The Vanishing Throne, will be released next year and it follows the further fortunes of Lady Aileana Kameron in her battle against the Fae. This is exciting new territory for Booked as we present our first fantasy author.

The Construction of RMS Lusitania - One of Clydebank’s greatest ships “The Royal Mail Steamer Lusitania was designed to be the largest and fastest ship in the world. She was built for the Cunard line by John Brown and Co Ltd, and entered service between Liverpool and New York in 1907. Tragically she was torpedoed by a German submarine on 7 May 1915, and sank rapidly, with the loss of 1198 lives. My talk will, however, be about the building of this magnificent and innovative vessel, and about the techniques used in her construction and equipment. Lusitania was, I would argue, the most beautiful liner ever built.” Professor John R Hume As well as Professor’s Hume’s talk we are offering a free visit up the Titan Crane to all of the ticket holders who can be at the Titan Crane Booking Office between 6.15pm and 6.30pm. A shuttle bus will take you round to the Crane and back.
