Make worship an integral part of the holiday season The hustle and bustle of the often hectic holiday season can make it easy to overlook religion during this special time of year.

Come the holidays, adherents of Judaism celebrate Chanukah while many Christians celebrate Christmas. Though different, the two holidays share some similarities.

In celebration of Chanukah, families gather for an eight-day commemoration to honor the rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem and a miracle in which a small amount of oil illuminated a menorah for eight days. Perhaps because it falls during the holiday season, Chanukah has become one of the most wellknown Jewish celebrations, even for those who do not adhere to the Jewish faith.

For devout Christians, Christmas isn’t about eggnog and Santa Claus. Christmas (Christ’s Mass) is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the son of God. Christmas is a day of great joy in the Christian faith because it marks the beginning of Jesus’ time on earth.

Both Chanukah and Christmas, while joyous celebrations, are laced with solemnity. The Second Jewish Temple was desecrated by GreekSyrians, who had erected an altar to Zeus and sacrificed pigs within its sacred walls. At this point in time, Jews had to practice their faith in secret, reading the Torah underground and using dreidels to simulate games and confuse Greek soldiers. However, the Jews, led by a small group of rebels known as the Maccabees, persevered, marking the joy of Chanukah for years to come.

The period leading up to Christmas known as Advent is a time for repentance and preparation for the grace and miracle of Jesus’ birth. According to Christianity.com, the word “advent” is derived from the Latin word “adventus,” meaning “coming.” Advent is a time to both reflect on the past and look forward to the future. Much like Lent, Advent is intended to be a season of fasting, prayer and reaching out to God. During the holiday season, houses of worship customarily host prayer sessions and special holiday-related events. The faithful are encouraged to participate in these events in celebration of their faith.

Prayer can help remove distractions during the holiday season, helping individuals reconnect with the true meaning of the holiday season.

AURORA CONTINUES CHRISTMAS PARADE TRADITION

AURORA — Under sunny skies and with a wintry chill in the air, Aurora residents spent a recent Sunday afternoon celebrating the season with a town parade.

The Dec. 10 event was sponsored by the Aurora/Richland Township Chamber of Commerce.

The parade is a longtime Aurora tradition, according to committee member Gail Patterson.

“I’ve been involved for 15 years so I’m going to guess we’ve had the parade for 30-plus years,” she said.

A cavalcade of local officials, candidates, school students, church congregations and local fire/rescue units were joined by Santa Claus. The parade is a special Christmas gift for the community, shared event director Lennie Battle.

“I think it’s wonderful when we can bring joy to our town,” she said. “It’s something I enjoy very much.”

Bridges on either side of Bath are closed for a period, giving pedestrians and parade participants the right of way. As always, lots of candy was thrown to the little ones to sweeten Bath’s parade even more.

BELHAVEN BELHAVEN HOSTS A COZY CHRISTMAS

BELHAVEN — Belhaven had its winter wonderland in full swing when a cozy crowd of Belhaven locals turned out for its annual Christmas parade on Dec. 2.

In conjunction with the Belhaven Arts Council’s Festival of Trees at the Wilkinson Center — in which dozens of trees were decorated by individuals or businesses and vendors sold homemade food and handcrafted gifts to visitors — as well as the toy train exhibit hosted by Don and Marjie Stark at the Old City Hall building, the day was a festive occasion. A Jeep completely wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper, Little Miss Independence Blakley Thompson and Santa atop his sleigh, which looked suspiciously like a fire truck, could all be found parading down Main Street in this quaint town on Pantego Creek.

HOLIDAY RECIPES CHEESE WAFERS

1 pound sharp cheese, grated; 1 stick butter, softened; 1 cup self rising flour; dash each of salt, pepper and red pepper; 1 cup Rice Krispies; pecan halves.

Combine cheese, butter, flour, pepper, salt and Rice Krispies; mix well with hands. Roll into one-inch balls.

Place on ungreased baking sheets about 1/2 inch apart.

Flatten and add one pecan half on top. Bake in 350=degree oven for 10-12 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes. Remove to a plate. Stir in air tight container. Freezes well.

2 (8-ounce) blocks cream cheese (melt in microwave 45 seconds); large spoonful mayo; 1 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning; 2 pounds fresh lump crab meat.

Stir and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes, or until brown.

Beaufort County Grange #1233 4 eggs; 1 cup light brown sugar; 1 cup sugar; 1 cup selfrising flour; 1 cup oil; 1 cup chopped pecans; 1 teaspoon butter flavoring.

Mix each ingredient one at a time. Start with eggs, slightly beaten with wire whisk. Grease and flour a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.

Take out of oven and immediately sprinkle 10x sugar over cake. Cool 30 minutes and cut into squares.

Christ Vision Church, Blounts Creek jalapeno peppers, cut lengthwise and rinsed; 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese; bacon.

Stuff the cream cheese in peppers and wrap a slice of bacon around pepper. Bake at 350 degrees until cream cheese is popping through bacon. Broil until bacon is brown.

CRANBERRY SQUARES

First Presbyterian Church, Washington 1 1/2 cups sugar; 2 large eggs; 3/4 cup butter, melted and cooled slightly; 1 teaspoon almond extract; 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour; 2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries; 1/2 cup chopped pecans.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a nine-inch square pan.

Beat sugar and eggs in a large bowl until slightly thickened. Beat in melted butter and almond extract. Add flour and stir until well blended. Stir in cranberries and pecans. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake until tester inserted in center comes out clean, about one hour. Cool completely and cut into squares.

Smyrna Original Free Will Baptist Church, Blounts Creek 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda; 1 teaspoon water; 1 teaspoon vanilla; 1 1/2 cups sugar; 1 cup water; 1 cup light corn syrup; 3 cups margarine or butter; 2 cups raw peanuts.

Mix soda, water and vanilla and set aside. Combine sugar, water and syrup and cook to a soft boil at 240 degrees.

Then stir in margarine and nuts. Cook to 300 degrees.

Remove and stir in soda mixture. Pour on warm, greased cookie sheet. Cool and break into pieces.

Hodges Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Chocowinity 1 (3-ounce) package cream cheese, softened; 1 tablespoon butter, softened; 3 cups confectioners sugar; 2 drops peppermint oil; sugar (for coating).

Combine cream cheese, butter and peppermint oil. Mix in confectioners sugar. Pinch off small amounts of dough and roll into balls. Roll balls in sugar to coat. Great for Christmas!

OLD FASHIONED TEA CAKES

1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese; 2 tablespoons butter; 2 teaspoons chopped pimento; 2 teaspoons chopped green pepper; 2 teaspoons chopped onion; 1 teaspoon Worcestershire; 1 teaspoon lemon juice; 1 (8-ounce) package shredded sharp cheddar cheese; 1 cup chopped pecans.

Combine cream cheese, cheese and butter until smooth. Add pimento, green pepper, onion, Worcestershire, lemon juice and shredded cheese. Mix well and form into a ball; refrigerate until set. Remove from refrigerator and roll in chopped pecans until completely covered. Lay on wax paper.

St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Bath 3 eggs; 1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk; 1 1/2 cups sugar; 1 1/2 tablespoons flour; 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla; 2 cups coconut; 1 (9-inch) prepared deep dish pie crust.

Slightly beat eggs and combine with milk, stirring well.

Mix sugar and flour; add to mixture, followed by vanilla and coconut. Pour into uncooked pie shell. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-55 minutes.

2 cups all-purpose flour; 1 egg, beaten slightly; 1 cup sugar; 1/2 cup shortening; 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring; milk.

Mix all ingredients together with fingertips, adding just enough milk to make dough stiff enough to be rolled out thin. Sprinkle with sugar. Cut out with cookie cutters, or glass to make round. Bake on cookie sheet at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes.

2 cups sugar; 1 cup vinegar.

Combine sugar and vinegar into a saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook over medium heat until it forms a hard ball in water. You may use a candy thermometer to get to hard ball stage. Pour into two greased plates. Take up when somewhat cool and pull until it turns white. Place on a greased area and cut with scissors into small pieces and wrap each piece in wax paper.

SPICED SIPPING CIDER

Old Ford Volunteer Fire Department 2 cups grated sharp cheese; 2 sticks margarine; 1/4 teaspoon black pepper; 1 teaspoon paprika; 1 cup plain flour; 3/4 teaspoon salt.

Blend all ingredients except flour. Stir in flour a little at a time. Flatten one teaspoon mixture and add green stuffed olive in center. Roll in ball around olive. Chill until firm. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. May be frozen before or after cooking.

Beaufort County Grange #1233 4 cups water; 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger; 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon; 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves; 1 cup sugar; juice from 2 lemons; juice from 2 oranges; 1/2 gallon apple cider.

Bring water, spices and sugar to a boil; add juices and cider.

Simmer for at least 1/2 hour. Serve warm. Serves 10 to 12.

Celebrate a handcrafted Christmas

Shoppers at this year’s Kris Kringle Craft Show at the Washington Civic Center were in for a real treat.

Dozens of artists and crafters offered wares that included crocheted and knitted caps and scarves, pottery, jewelry, Christmas tree ornaments and home decor items.

It’s a safe bit that there will be plenty of delighted recipients thrilled with special one of a kind gifts Christmas morning thanks to the creativity of folks who take pride in their work.

The craft show is an annual event sponsored by The Blind Center, a Washington facility that provides programs and assistance for the visually impaired population in Beaufort County.

Along with the satisfaction of supporting local artisans, shoppers didn’t have to risk battling Black Friday crowds for bargains.

There’s a lot to be said for the gentility of shopping local.

CHOCOWINITY KICKS OFF CHRISTMAS PARADE SEASON

CHOCOWINITY — Chocowinity officially kicked off the holiday season Nov. 18 with its traditional Christmas parade, sponsored by the local fire department.

Businesses, civic organizations, schools and church groups comprised the approximately 80 entries this year, according to fire chief Tommy Pendley.

“Between the parade line-up and the spectators who came out, it was our biggest parade ever,” Pendley said.

Based on creativity, originality and over-

all holiday theme, judges awarded first place to Chocowinity Primary School. Unity Christian Academy earned second place honors and Servpro received third place.

Billy Albritton served as parade grand marshal; he is a town commissioner and serves on the local EMS/fire boards.

“The parade committee thought he needed to be recognized for all the time he puts in for Chocowinity and its residents,” Pendley noted.

Chocowinity’s holiday festivities also included an arts and crafts expo, bake sale, photos with Santa Claus and a pancake/ sausage breakfast.

EDWARD — Beaufort County’s parade season came to a close Dec. 17 with a traditional Christmas cavalcade hosted

by Edward Christian Church.

This was the eighth year the church held the event, which began as a

way to give back to the community, according to coordinator Rhonda Davenport.

Grand marshal of the parade was Jimmie Walker, a lifelong member of the church.

“I’ve lived around here most of my life; I retired from the phosphate mine,” Walker reminisced before the start of the pa-

rade. “I’m still working.

My son and I have a little business here doing tires and inspections.”

Those participating in the parade were invited to donate stuffed animals to be distributed to local children. A hot chocolate and cookie social was held in the church fellowship hall, with Santa and Mrs. Claus as special guests.

WASHINGTON PARADE IS HIGHLIGHT OF HOLIDAY SEASON

More than 100 entries lined up along Stewart Parkway Dec. 2 for a traditional Christmas parade through downtown Washington.

Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, the parade featured entries from throughout Beaufort County and surrounding areas.

“The Kiwanis Club took over the parade about 18 years ago, but it has been a Washington tradition for more than 60 years,” said club member and parade committee member Bobby Roberson. “And it’s always been the first Saturday in December.”

Elected officials and several seeking public office were among those joining Santa Claus, the grand finale of the parade waving to the crowds from atop a City of Washington fire truck. Also featured were local dance students, youth groups and high school bands.

Entry fees are waived for school, church and other nonprofit organizations, Roberson said. Businesses are asked to pay a small registration fee, which the Kiwanis Club uses for the good of the community.

“The money generated by the Christmas parade goes directly into three scholarships we offer at Northside High School, Southside High School and Washington High School,” Roberson said. “The scholarships range from $1,000 to $1,500 each year.”
