WHAT'S INSIDE THE SPRING ISSUE

FROM THE LIBRARIAN Hello and welcome to the first edition of our brand-new Western Downs Libraries magazine: More Than Books. As someone who has been involved in libraries for as long as I have, you come to realise that libraries are more than books in many ways: we inspire and support lifelong-learning, literacy, creativity and cultural expression. Most importantly, libraries are at the heart of our communities.

MORE THAN BOOKS | SPRING 2021

With that in mind, we wanted to showcase just how fantastic our libraries are by highlighting the places, spaces and faces of our nine branches across the Western Downs. You'll find events and workshops, services and programs, collection highlights, the latest in technology, early literacy advice, and a bit more about our local libraries and the roles they play in their communities. In this edition, we unveil all your library has to offer this Spring; from lifestyle workshops and boredom-busting school holiday activities (including plenty of Lego!), to must-borrow titles across historical fiction, crime, children's, biography and more. I'm particularly excited for our Makerspace Open Day in Chinchilla. Our travelling MADE Lab (Manufacturing, Art, Design and Engineering) looks to bridge the digital and analogue divide by challenging how we think about technology and what it can do. Calling all creative thinkers —whether you're a professional, side-hustler or hobbyist— this is one library event you don't want to miss. 1

We'll also be introducing you to the muchloved Pam and Jacqui of Tara Library in our dedicated Get To Know Your Local Library section. Our staff are the biggest advocates for what’s great about Western Downs Libraries, and many of you will recognise their friendly faces! So whether you're a seasoned library-lover, or are new to the world of libraries, take the time to explore what Western Downs Libraries are all about.

and Jacqui. Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, these ladies are exactly what you're looking for in a library and are often raved about by the community.

The beautiful outdoor area is a highlight of the Library, where you can soak up the sunshine with a good book. Or if you're in need of a computer or into gaming - the Tara Library has you sorted for that too!

Jacqui has worked with Western Downs Libraries for two and a half years, while Pam has been hanging around in libraries for a whopping 19 years!

The biggest draw card for the Library are the much-loved staff, Pam

PAM

WHY DO YOU LOVE YOUR LIBRARY? "Because we help people and get to discuss books all day! Who wouldn't want that? Also seeing the kids' eyes light up when they come to a program and how eager they are to come back again." — Jacqui "I love it when someone we helped find something new to read comes back in to tell us all about it. It's cool to see people giving new things a go, like using the internet or trying a new craft. I like helping them become confident and independent learners." — Pam

WHAT WE RECOMMEND… "Anything by Brandon Sanderson! The Skywards series is a great place to start." — Jacqui "I always encourage our customers to take advantage of the regional collection. Did you know you can reserve any item within our nine library branches and have it delivered straight to the Tara Library? And all for free!" — Pam

They borrow and read so many more books and their teachers have commented at the improvement in their literacy. Thank you, Tara Library."— Joanna "The ladies at Tara Library take such good care of me and everyone else. It is never any trouble to search for books for us or get new books into the library for us. These girls take great care of us." — Harry So if you're ready for a weekend road trip, or already living in the Tara area, pop on down and say hello!

WHAT THE LOCALS HAVE TO SAY… "Cadence loves coming to Story Central and connecting with other kids over the love of books and writing. It's a great program, it gets her mind moving and creating outside of the classroom. She has formed friendships there that carry on outside of school now. Thank you, Tara Library, for including such an excellent program for the kids of Tara." — Peta

JACQUI

"My girls first started going to the library to attend an after-school program while we waited for their older brother. Now if we don't visit at least twice a week, there's big trouble! 12

FIRST 5 FOREVER

More than a million new connections are forming in your child's brain every second during their first few years of life. Research tells us that when babies and children get what they need it can have a lasting effect on their future. Sharing stories, singing, talking and playing with your child from birth builds a foundation for your child’s future development that can last a lifetime.

JANETTE'S TOP TIPS: PROP BAGS "Experts in literacy and child development have discovered that if children know eight nursery rhymes by heart by the time they're four years old, they're usually among the best readers by the time they're eight." - Mem Fox.

STORYTIME AT HOME

With this in mind, why not create a prop bag? A prop bag provides a hands-on learning opportunity for all children no matter their age group or developmental stage. Start small, and just add a few props to remind you of your favourite nursery rhymes. These bags can be filled with everyday objects or children's small toys which then become props to ignite and spark imaginations and learning. Look for a star (it may be a Christmas ornament!) and then you have your first prop for Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Babies learn so much by holding, touching, feeling or even by just looking at things. You may have the bag close to the baby change table and choose a prop each time for the baby to hold. Say or sing the rhyme and soon the baby will be looking forward to you singing rhymes each time you change a nappy. As your child grows, leave the bag out for them to discover. You may find they want to choose their own prop and tell you the rhyme instead, or even start to tell their own rhymes!

Read, talk, play and sing — without leaving home! Western Downs Libraries' Storytime at Home kits are available to borrow with your membership. Complete with a picture book, activities and songs to try, and some special props, have fun and foster early literacy skills with your little one. Suitable for children aged 12 months to 5 years.

TREVOR'S BOOKSHELF Our library dog Trevor has an impressive bookshelf — here's his pawsome pick for Spring!

ROSIE THE RHINOCEROS BY JIMMY BARNES AND MATT SHANKS Who is Rosie? Is she a fun-loving rhinoceros who is always up early and ready to greet the day? Or is she a magical unicorn who skips through the savannah on her dainty hooves? Either way she's perfect .From the award-winning author and rock legend Jimmy Barnes and critically acclaimed illustrator Matt Shanks comes a book about the joy of being yourself. 16
