STAF F LOVE! GO TELL THE BEES THAT I AM GONE BY DIANA GABALDON

After 7 years in the making, the much anticipated 9th Outlander book is set to hit our shelves late November. A reunited Claire and Jamie face being torn asunder again as the American Revolution approaches their North Carolina home. After finally being reunited with their daughter Brianna and her family, they are growing uneasy as the tensions of the colonists grow and the perils of the 1700s seem less safe than they thought. Hold onto your hats, Outlander fans, the show ain't over yet. – Jacinta, Dalby Library.

DARK RISE BY C.S. PACAT (YA) Sixteen-year-old dock boy Will is on the run, pursued by the men who killed his mother. Then an old servant tells him of his destiny to fight beside the Stewards, who have sworn to protect humanity if the Dark King ever returns. Will is thrust into a world of magic, where he starts training for a vital role in the oncoming battle against the dark.

THE DARK HOURS BY MICHAEL CONNELLY A brazen and methodical killer strikes on New Year's Eve and LAPD Detective Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch must join forces to find justice for the victim in a city scarred by fear and social unrest.

THE STORYTELLER: TALES OF LIFE AND MUSIC BY DAVE GROHL So, I've written a book. Having entertained the idea for years, I have decided to write these stories just as I have always done, in my own hand. I look forward to focussing the lens through which I see these memories a little sharper for you with much excitement. 10

GET TO KNOW YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY

MEANDARRA LIBRARY Meandarra Library is one of the smallest libraries in our region, but it has a huge heart. Carolyn is going to show us around and tell us some more about this fabulous little library. Meandarra Library might be small but has so much to offer for people of all ages. Regular Storytimes for children, tech support sessions, school holiday activities, and a great collection of books, magazines, and DVDs. There is also a dedicated computer for community use — and free Wi-Fi! The amazing community space is regularly used for get-togethers, community meetings, for those just wanting to relax with a good book in one of our comfy armchairs, catch up on study or work while the kids are at school and kindy. Meandarra Library is a single person branch, so I need to be Jack of all trades!

WHAT MAKES MEANDARRA LIBRARY DIFFERENT? Located in the centre of town, directly beside the Meandarra ANZAC Memorial Museum, the library is in a unique position to welcome the many visitors to our town and for library staff to answer any questions they may have about the area. Meandarra Library also has the only dedicated military collection in Western Downs Libraries, and this is regularly drawn upon by people throughout the entire region. WHY DO YOU LOVE YOUR JOB? I have always had a passion for books and libraries, so feel very lucky to come to work every day to a place that I love working in. I also love serving my community, and the library is a much-loved part of this community.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED IN LIBRARIES? I started working at Meandarra Library in 2009, so 12 years and counting!

WHAT MAKES YOUR JOB DIFFERENT? Did you know that you can request a book that we do not have in our collection? Titles older than 2 years can be sourced from other library services and reserved on the borrower's behalf as an Interlibrary Loan, while newer titles are called Purchase Requests. I feel privileged to be the Interlibrary Loan and Purchase Request Officer for Western Downs Libraries, so any Interlibrary Loans or purchase request made in any of our nine branches is actioned by me. I source books from all over Australia and take great pride in locating specially requested books and getting them to our borrowers as quickly as possible — no-one likes to wait too long for a book they really want to read!

COLLECTION RECOMMENDATION Because I spend a bit of time travelling between home and work each day, I love to immerse myself in a great audiobook. BorrowBox always has a great selection, and my current fave author is Lucinda Riley – 'The Seven Sisters' series is amazing!

CAROLYN

Alongside my Library duties, I am also responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Meandarra ANZAC Memorial Museum. This involves welcoming visitors to the museum and assisting the volunteer committee with maintenance of the collection and exhibitions.

FIRST 5 FOREVER

Another idea is to borrow some non-fiction books such as: The Kingfisher Dinosaur Encyclopedia by Micahel J Benton or A-Z of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animals by Nancy Dickmann.

People often ask library staff how best to encourage a love of reading in children. Janettes answer always is to choose books that feature topics and themes your child is already interested in.

For instance, if your child loves dinosaurs check out: Rumble, Rumble, Dinosuar by Katrina Charman or I Can Roar Like a Dinosaur by Karl Newson.

Borrowing non-fiction books also assists children to develop knowledge of their environment and society. Another tool to encourage your child to read is to watch Story Box Library. You just need your library card number to log in and you can access hundreds of books beautifully presented on the screen that will appeal to the reluctant reader.

Encouraging a love of reading in our children is often as easy as allowing children to choose and look at books on their own. This will give them some ownership over the content and Western Downs Libraries have all picture books labelled with the recomended age. When at home, leave the books where your child can easily access them like a basket or a low shelf. Keep some books in the car and always have a few handy in your bag for long waits at the doctor or lines at the grocery store.

TREVOR'S BOOKSHELF Trevor the library dog is back again with his top pick for Summer!

NEE NAW GOES BANANAS BY DEANO YIPADEE The monkeys escaped, and the driver felt glum, until NEE NAW arrived with a bandage for his bum. Nee Naw! Nee Naw! I'm a little fire engine. Nee Naw! Nee Naw! I'm happy I'm me! Another totally appealing, side-splitting rescue from the creators of NEE NAW and Stink-o-saurus
