Report on Philanthropy 2012 – 2013

I hope CSW remains a place where imagination and creativity

come alive in all aspects of our work, where we value the health

of our minds and our bodies, where we stay connected not only to our local community but to the world at large, and work deliberately and diligently toward justice and peace, when and wherever possible.

INTRODUCTION

Dear CSW Families and Friends: As a proudly progressive school, it’s natural for us to take pause, reflect on our work and ask ourselves: Are we doing the best that we can to serve our students and prepare them for their place in our world? How might we do better? In recent months, we tasked ourselves with the challenge of reimagining how we learn and teach, to celebrate and strengthen our school while holding fast to our progressive core. In true CSW fashion, this has been a spirited discussion, to say the least, about what it means to be a progressive school in the 21st century. What are the qualities that make CSW a leader in progressive education? How might we better equip our students for a rapidly evolving, increasingly multicultural, and technologically connected world? So many of our teachers are contributing their brilliance and time to this process, and I look forward to what unfolds in the year ahead. For the past several years, we have been implementing ideas borne from our strategic initiatives – Social Justice, Global Engagement, Health and Wellness, with Learning and Teaching at the core. It has been exciting to see them come alive at CSW.

In the past year, we hired our first Director of Social Justice and Multicultural Programming to support our students and families of color and help us to better integrate social justice into our teaching. We continued our partnership with the acclaimed Shanghai Theatre Academy and brought guest theatre director Wu Min to teach Beijing Opera and traditional Chinese theatre. Students took their studies abroad to Costa Rica, Panama, and to Quebec City – trips that immersed them in languages, science, history, and world culture. Our athletes played hard with true team spirit, and our students took advantage of wellness courses, such as yoga, Sports Medicine, and Science of Nutrition. In addition, we launched a new peer-mentoring program with student mentors of different grades, gender, and cultural diversity providing additional support for our students. These combined efforts support our Learning and Teaching initiative, which stands at the center of what we do each minute of every day in our classrooms, on the playing fields, and in our dorms. I hope CSW remains a place where imagination and creativity come alive in all aspects of our work, where we value the health of our minds and our bodies, where we stay connected not only to our local community but to the world at large, and work deliberately and diligently toward justice and peace, when and wherever possible. As we continue on this journey, I want to acknowledge the critical role that you play everyday in our work and in our road ahead. The following pages honor each of you – our generous families, our committed alumni and trustees, our dedicated faculty and staff, and our loyal friends. Quite simply, thank you. Your financial support, your time and talent, your commitment and energy for CSW help propel us forward, and help us deliver on our promise to our students, our community, and the world. With all good wishes,

Jane Moulding, Head of School

ATTRACTING AND RETAINING THE BEST EDUCATORS Over the past three years, your support for the Faculty Salary Initiative has enabled CSW to significantly increase teacher salaries and bring our faculty compensation closer to parity with our peer schools. The initiative is a critical part of our efforts to recruit the best teachers, as well as retain our brilliant and dedicated faculty. As we claim our ground as a leader in progressive education, we will continue to make this initiative a priority and value your support.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dear CSW Family and Friends: On behalf of the Board of Trustees, please accept my sincere gratitude for supporting the 2012-2013 Annual Fund and Leadership Giving Programs at CSW. Thank you for your financial support, your gifts of time and talent, and most of all, for your commitment to our community and to our mission. As the parent of a CSW graduate, I recognize the important work that our faculty do every day to support the growth and development of our students. As a trustee, I see how critical your support is to helping CSW carry out its mission. At CSW, the core methodologies of progressive education are practiced every day; student-centered, hands-on, multidisciplinary, and collaborative learning have been at our roots since Arthur and Stella Gilman founded the school in 1886. Whether it is through interdisciplinary learning in classes like Ordering Chaos, the creativity and artistry at each of our End-of-Mod art shows, or our Progressive Education Lab teaching fellows learning alongside our students, you can see our guiding principles everywhere. CSW’s Annual Fund places your budget relieving dollars at work through specifically designated program areas – from Faculty Support to Health, Wellness and Athletics, your gifts have a real impact. Gifts in support of Financial Aid allow CSW to open our doors to a diverse student body based on their promise and ability, rather than their ability to pay. This year, CSW will award over $2.65 million in financial aid to our families in need. Support for Social Justice and Multicultural Programming pays for unique programs and guest speakers. Last year’s Diversity Day brought poet and psychologist Dr. Michael Fowlin to a school-wide assembly, where he performed his one-man show titled You Don’t Know Me Until You Know Me that discusses issues of race, equity, discrimination, and personal identity. Your support of Technology and Innovation delivered iPads into history classrooms this year, and helped establish the infrastructure for a strong wireless network across campus.

4 report on philanthropy 2012–2013 • CSW

Last April’s record-breaking Changing Lives with Art Auction was made possible with your generosity, raising over $130,000 to support arts programming on campus, including CSW’s three art galleries, purchases of software and equipment in our Youth Understanding Media (YUM) Lab, as well as performing arts programs that include dance, drama and music. CSW’s current and past parents raised more than $349,000, contributing to almost half of CSW’s Annual Fund. More than a quarter of CSW’s Annual Fund is supported by our loyal alumni from around the globe. In June, Sally Brotman ’63 celebrated her 50th milestone reunion and, on behalf of all alumni, presented a check for over $210,000 to Jane Moulding, representing all alumni giving to the Annual Fund for the year. In total, the CSW community contributed $770,840 to the Annual Fund for ongoing operations and an additional $543,774 to special giving programs – a total of $1,314,614 in 2012-2013. I thank you for giving back to The Cambridge School of Weston, and I hope you will continue supporting CSW in the years ahead. Your generosity makes an impact on CSW students, faculty, and the world around us all.

Sincerely,

Christian Nolen Chair, Board of Trustees

PLAYING CREATIVELY, LIVING MINDFULLY At CSW, the health and wellness of our students go hand in hand with learning and teaching. Last fall, we restructured New Student Orientation to include robust programming for international students and students of color to help ease the transition to life on campus. We launched the peer-mentoring program to provide a peer-based support network for students. Last year, peer mentors helped welcome new students, hosted “Let’s Keep Talking” sessions to facilitate discussions on campus, and provided support for students grappling with common life stressors. The school also launched a new model for health education, by spreading health education programming throughout the year to improve learning and integration. Last year, the program focused on cognition and how the teenage brain impacts the process of decision-making.

Peer mentors arrived on campus a week earlier this year to participate in training and orientation. The program provides students on campus with a support network of trained peers.

2012-2013 REVENUE SOURCES Tuition and fees do not cover the full cost of educating a student at CSW. The remaining cost is covered primarily by philanthropic contributions and income from our endowment. The gap between tuition and actual cost was about $10,500 during 2012-2013.

CHANGE MAKERS AND CARE TAKERS Your gifts to CSW’s Annual Fund have benefited areas of need that make a difference in our school and in our community. Your gifts in support of Financial Aid are part of the $2.65 million that CSW provides to help families afford a CSW education. Gifts in support of Social Justice funded community service projects and learning opportunities for our students. Last year, filmmaker André Robert Lee spoke to CSW students about his film The Prep School Negro, which documents the experiences of students of color at predominantly white independent schools. Students also participated in a Charles River Clean Up effort, made baby quilts for a local homeless shelter, and organized fundraising events. The theme of last year’s annual Michael J. Feldman Social Justice Day was Wrongful Convictions, and featured The Innocence Project, which provides pro bono legal and investigative services to people seeking to prove their innocence of crimes for which they have been wrongfully convicted. Your Annual Fund gifts help make these programs and opportunities possible and help our students make a difference in the world. CSW welcomed film director and producer André Robert Lee on campus during the school’s celebration of Black History Month. Lee spoke at the all-school screening of The Prep School Negro, joined students and faculty at lunch and visited the ‘U.S. Black Studies’ class.

TEACHING PROGRESSIVE EDUCATORS Last fall, CSW launched the Progressive Education Lab (PEL), a two-year teaching fellowship that aims to equip young educators with the fundamentals of progressive theory through experiential learning at four different progressive schools. Now in its second year, CSW is proud to have Hallie Herz, one of the program’s inaugural fellows, in residency teaching English and a new cohort of fellows beginning their rotation, learning and teaching in integrated studies courses like Food and Culture, Ordering Chaos, and Re-Ordering Chaos. With your support, PEL offers a truly progressive model for teacher training by placing aspiring educators in classrooms from the get-go and providing them with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities.

PEL fellows actively participate in teaching and learning in Ordering Chaos, an integrated math and arts class, at CSW. Thank You • 13

TEACHER RETENTION FUND

Susan Schiro and Peter Manus

HONORING EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATORS The Cambridge School of Weston established new funds to honor the legacy of two remarkable teachers. The Karl Ross Fisher Memorial Fund, named in memory of our beloved visual arts faculty member who died last February, supports programs at CSW that Karl held dear, including technology in the arts, student-driven art projects, and outdoor activities. The Martha Armstrong Gray Dance Fund, or “The MAG Fund,” recognizes the former chair of the dance department who retired in June after 45 years of teaching at CSW. Gifts towards the MAG Fund will fund future renovations to the Dance Lab, bring in special guest teachers to campus, and support educational opportunities for dance students.

Family and friends established the Karl Ross Memorial Fund to honor his legacy at CSW. Karl was a champion of combining technology and the arts and was instrumental in helping establish the Youth Understand Media (YUM) lab at CSW, which has made courses in digital collage and film editing possible.

Martha Gray, who retired in June, began teaching dance at CSW in 1968. The annual Dance Concert at CSW has opened to standing-room only crowds each year and stands as a testament to Martha’s brilliance.

PATIENCE LAURIAT SOCIETY Provisions in bequests or other deferred gifts make up more than $2.35 million in projected future gifts pledged to the school. Individuals who contribute planned gifts to CSW are invited to become members of the Patience Lauriat Society, an honorary association of individuals whose planned gifts have already been received or will someday accrue to The Cambridge School of Weston. The society is named after Patience Lauriat ’46, who left a portion of her estate to CSW to create an unrestricted endowment fund. Her gift to the school was her way of acknowledging what the school had taught her and had helped her accomplish. She was the first alumna to honor the school in this way. The Patience Lauriat Society recognizes all constituents who have provided for CSW in their bequests, annuities or other planned giving instruments. Realized gifts are directed to the school’s endowment fund, unless otherwise specified.

A LASTING LEGACY The Patience Lauriat Society has long recognized the generosity of individuals who have chosen to name the school as a beneficiary of their estate. Now, CSW is pleased to offer Charitable Gift Annuities as a way for donors to provide longterm support for the school. Through a CGA, a donor transfers assets to the school in return for a guaranteed fixed income for their lifetime, or the lifetime of a designated beneficiary. CGAs may be dedicated to a particular purpose, such as a named scholarship, or to the build CSW’s general endowment, thus helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of the school. To inquire about how you can leave a lasting Legacy at CSW or to inform us of a provision, please call Thaddeus Thompson at (781) 398-8346.

Anne Lauriat (right), a niece of Patience Lauriat ’46, and Susan Poverman ’47 (left), a former classmate of Patience Lauriat, celebrated new inductees at a luncheon last fall.

CREATING CHANGE WITH ART The 2013 Changing Lives with Art Auction was one for the record books! With 235 people in attendance, the auction featured the works of more than 145 artists and collectors and raised more than $130,000 to benefit the arts program at CSW. Event co-chairs Margie Perse P’13 and Lise Gordon P’14,’16 and their team of parent and student volunteers organized an event to remember, with live music and special performances. Special thanks go to alumni co-chairs Niho Kozuru ’86 and Ethan Cohen ’79, and also to our auctioneer Jack Gantos P’15, for lending their unique and creative talent and skills.
