IN THIS ISSUE. Well so much for Summer… Perhaps it was our feature on outdoor living and barbecuing that put the kibosh on the sunshine- I have to own up to buying a new garden sofa and rug which is always a sure way to bring on the rain – but really? Cats, dogs, frogs; it rained every creature and the garden has gone as wild as the mosquitos as a result! So, it’s goodbye to Summer and hello to Autumn which, to be fair, is by far my favourite season anyway. The beauty of the changing leaves, sunsets like fire and crisp night skies full of stars and possibilities. Autumn is a time we nest. We seek comfort in cosy fires, hearty meals and devilish desserts. In our house the after office Gn’T gets swapped for the medicinal (!) benefits of Merlot and casseroles bubble expectantly to be devoured after soggy Sunday dog walks. Bliss! Autumn is also a time for entertaining. The benefit of a one pot meal is it’s easy enough to share with friends for a midweek supper, just pop in a couple of jacket potatoes, skins oiled and crisp and you’ve got a banquet. The festivities of Halloween and Bonfire night are the perfect excuse to feast and regroup with friends and family for fun and of course there’s the planning ahead to Christmas and New Year to be done… Sorry, yes, I mentioned Christmas. Had to be done I’m afraid. But before we get there, we have an issue packed with
events and activities to enjoy throughout Autumn. Firstly, we chatted to actor Shane Richie about his new play The Entertainer where life really does imitate art. A role he was born to play, the reviews are already excellent. It arrives at the Belgrade Theatre and the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton in October and we urge you to go see. We also speak to legendary guitarist Miloš ahead of his live show at the Town Hall, Symphony Hall and we take a trip to the Circus as part of Birmingham Hippodrome’s 120th Birthday Celebrations. We speak to Richard Peakman, one of the team behind Circus 1903 who is excited to let audiences see that the Victorian Circus really is The Greatest Show!
Until then you embrace the splendour of Autumn and enjoy. Best
In the home, we’re redefining our workspace and embracing the colour green for libraries and studies and we have details about how you can get one of a hundred pairs of free tickets to this year’s Grand Designs Live, courtesy of Love Your Postcode. We’re being semi sensible in the garage by looking at practical estates with serious performance and we’re getting ready to go snap happy in Croatia, one of the most photogenic countries in Europe and an easy weekend escape from Birmingham Airport. And finally, we’ve gone all out on Autumn Trends with our picks of the top twenty looks for him and for her to take you from September to February in style. We hope you enjoy this issue and look forward to seeing you again in Winter.

TOIL & TROUBLE: AUGUSTEN BURROUGHS JOKER If you haven’t read an Augusten Burroughs book, then go out immediately and get Running With Scissors. I mean it, right now. If you have read it then hurrah- you’re in for a treat as there is more from this number one New York Times bestselling author: another stunning memoir that is tender, touching...and just a little spooky. For as long as Augusten Burroughs could remember, he knew things he shouldn’t have known and manifested things that shouldn’t have come to pass. His mother reassured him that it was all perfectly normal as he was descended from a long line of witches. It was a bond that he and his mother shared--until the day she left him in the care of her psychiatrist to be raised in his family (but that’s a whole other story). After that, Augusten was on his own… 6 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

Shop thE season A Balanced Education As Hallfield School celebrates 140 illustrious years and continues to excel at providing a broad and balanced education, they recently announced their expansion into Years 7 and 8 starting September 2020. Hallfield becomes the only Birmingham co-educational Prep School up to 13 years. Traditionally, pupils entered Public Schools as boarders or day pupils in Year 9. Whilst Hallfield will continue to offer a pathway at 11+ to local independent and selective grammar schools, they know that starting a new senior school at the end of Year 6 is not the right choice for everyone. Many parents feel that at the age of 11 years, their child is not ready to either commute a longer distance or board. Equally, some pupils need more time to mature and develop in the familiar, more secure environment a Prep school can offer.

The curriculum for Hallfield Seniors in Years 7 and 8 is specially designed to be both broad and well-balanced and will give each child a thorough preparation for Year 9 entry into public schools. It will be based on the Key Stage 3 curriculum, whilst offering the opportunity to develop independent learning and research skills. It is envisaged that the children will be able to take full advantage of the cultural and learning opportunities within the Birmingham region and will also undertake residential visits. Through the wider curriculum, senior pupils at Hallfield will be given leadership opportunities to help them not only prepare for their next stage of education, but for life. Additionally, their Enrichment Programme will run in parallel to the curriculum, offering pupils the chance to develop life-long skills to foster independence, resilience, teamwork, entrepreneurship, citizenship and social responsibility. Year 7 and 8 classes are expected to be in the region of 15 pupils per group, enabling individualised and focussed preparation for the Common Entrance exams. PRIDE, PREJUDICE AND PRISM at THE REP Robert Lindsay returns to the stage in a new play based on the astonishing true story of the man who made Hollywood’s greatest divas beautiful. The star of My Family and Citizen Smith, Robert Lindsay plays double Oscarwinning cinematic master Jack Cardiff in Terry Johnson’s poignant drama, Prism which opens at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 4 – 12 October.
The play sees Jack Cardiff retired. His days of hard work - and play – on some of the most famous film sets in the world are now long behind him, as are his secret liaisons with some of the most famous women in the world... Surrounded by memorabilia from a lifetime of ‘painting with light’, the writing of an autobiography should be an easy matter - were it not that Jack would now rather live in the past than remember it. Starring alongside Robert Lindsay is Tara Fitzgerald.
Men, money and microphones will be fought over in a new loving and irreverent all-female adaptation of Jane Austen’s unrivalled literary classic, Pride And Prejudice* (*sort of ) which also opens at The REP from 15 October- 2 November. A fantastic adaptation like no other this new retelling of a literary classic draws on over two-hundred years of romantic pop history to deliver a unique take on a beloved novel. The story is told from the point of view of six young women. These are the women who empty the chamber pots and sweep ash from the grate; the overlooked and the undervalued making sure those above stairs find their happyending. Of course, they’ve always been running the show - after all ‘you can’t have a whirlwind romance without clean bedding’ – but tonight, the servants are also playing every part. THE ENTERTAINER
Said to be one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, for the first time since its original premiere in 1957, John Osborne’s classic is given a vibrant new setting and an electric new vision. Archie Rice hits the bottle a little too hard and dodges taxes a little too often. Despite being a washed-up show-man playing the summer season in 1980’s Britain, he is determined that the show must go on – even if no one is there to see it. Rebecca Rhodes talks to actor Shane Richie and director Sean O’Connor on bringing this classic British drama back to stage and what it means to be an entertainer today.
How did the opportunity come along to play Archie Rice? Shane: Well this has been in the making now for about 12 years. Sean and I (Director Sean O’Connor) worked together back in 2001 on EastEnders when he was Story Editor. He was responsible for a lot of Alfie Moon’s big stories back in the day and then we worked together on a reboot of Minder for Channel 5 where I played Archie Daley. I was in my mid-forties then. Sean was still in his early fifties and he said to me ‘Are you familiar with John Osborne’s The Entertainer? And of course, I was. That amazing performance by Sir Lawrence Olivier, a great movie and he said, ‘Because one day you will make a great Archie Rice’. So, then we jump 12 years ahead and last year we’re chatting, and he said, ‘How do you fancy having a go at this?’ I said, ‘I’d love to’. It was then that he told me that he was going to do things a bit differently, to take the book, take this great classic that was set in the 50’s and for the first time we’ll reset it in the 80’s. Straight away, I thought great, but how are we going to get permission to do that? Of course Sean worked his magic through the Osborne estate and this is where we are. We’ve got an old play done a brand-new way. And I think that’s down to Sean, who has had the vision for a long time and has wanted to do this but bring changes and present it for a modern audience. And Sean knows, more than anyone about, he put The Archers back on the map, he was responsible for some of the biggest storylines in EastEnders as well as numerous TV and Film projects he’s worked on over the years and so there is no better person to turn this around. What made you think of the 80’s rather than more modern than that? Sean: Several reasons really, I think that one of the major issues is about the internet communication really. In the story you’ve got a very distant war where the son goes off and he is kidnapped and then dispatched by the enemy. The process of gaining information is much quicker now, it’s all done by mobile phones or emails.
I was looking for a context where the play would resonate today and the early 80’s with the Falklands War is one of the last big times when Britain was questioning its status on the international stage as we are doing again today. So, I wanted to have an era that would speak very loudly about today and I think this period does just that, in terms of what Britain means, what it’s for and where it is going.
“
I know who Archie Rice is, I know how it feels inside and I know what it’s like to be dead on stage.
”
Secondly, 1982 is the moment when old style comedy, your Seaside Specials, your traditional comedians are being outlawed by the newcomers like the Comedy Store Players, the likes of Spitting Image and all of that satire; the change over from old style comedy to alternative comedy so that’s a moment. A moment of cultural change in a moment of historic change with all of Britain questioning itself. I think that the resonance for today is very clear. Also, perhaps Archie is not just an outdated style of comedian but an outdated style of man and ultimately, what he represents and the culture of what he represents; a certain type of opinionated, careless, insensitive,
middle class, middle aged man is now also being questioned, post Me Too movement in a way that has never been before. So, I think, just by transposing this story to a different time period makes it read much louder. Shane, are you basing your version of Archie on anyone in particular? Is it a cautionary tale? Shane: Yes, he’s an amalgamation of people. My dad used to run clubs in London, and I grew up around Working Men’s Clubs in north London. I come from a big Irish family so every weekend we’d be at the clubs and I would see these comedians come on stage and do Irish gags, homophobic, racist, sexist and people would laugh. Then when I started in the business, in the eighties, it’s been well documented that I did stand up. I did shows like Live From the Piccadilly, Live From the Palladium, Seaside Specials, I did summer seasons in clubs, holiday camps, I get depressed thinking about it. So I have worked alongside a lot of these comics and even when on TV, as Sean was saying, when Spitting Image started, French and Saunders, Alexei Sayle, I think it was only really Channel 4 who were showcasing this kind of humour which I loved. As a comic, working in the industry I saw the changes very quickly and the people that I was working with felt very dated very quickly. Unlike a lot of the actors that have played this part before me, Olivier, Branagh, I mean there is no denying that they are wonderful actors, but they have never done stand up. They have never stood on a stage, in a club or at Butlins when kids are doing knee slides in front of you, there’s someone playing on the fruit machines or waiting for Bingo to get started and I have. I have been that comedian and I have stood there doing my thing for all these people have come to see Little and Large or Jimmy Cricket and I have died on my arse because this audience had been fed a staple diet of your Jim Davidsons your Bernard Mannings, your Jim Bowens. That’s all they knew so I would have to go up perform material which was totally not right for them and died on my arse. So, I know. I know what it’s like, I know who Archie Rice is, I know how it feels inside and I know what is dluxe-magazine.co.uk 19
SPOTLIGHT. I ended up doing Shane Richie’s Ladies Night Out which was me touring with strippers and drag queens around pubs and clubs as a 19 year old.. Occasionally I would do the odd play, but I’d turned my back on it a bit. In the eighties I did some TV, Seaside Special, Russ Abbott’s Mad House, Les Dennis’s show, a couple of sketch shows and then I was offered a show called ‘Lucky Numbers’ which was a bingo show which got 12 million viewers on a Friday night and then I got a Saturday night show and, bear in mind that I was still in my 20’s so I never had a plan. I didn’t want to be out of work. I had married very young and I had children when I was very young, so I had a family to look after. And I remember thinking there and then, if I am going to be an actor then I am not going to sit on my ass and just wait for the next job, so I learnt to dance. I went to Pineapple Dance Studio and I learnt to tap, I did Grease the musical, I did a few other musicals, went back to acting school for a while and did a lot more stand up. It was a necessity that I couldn’t be out of work because I had bills to pay and I had been poor once and I refuse to be poor again. I didn’t want to live like that so I was always working and a lot of it was out of choice. I have been there. I have had beer bottles thrown at me in Colchester. I remember in Wales, coming off stage, I was nineteen or twenty. and back then back then you had to do 3 half hour spots. I remember doing this particular club, going on and doing the material that I was doing then and just dying a death. No one was interested, they were just talking. I remember getting changed in the dressing room in between spots and there was a duo there too and the average age of the duo was dead. And one of them said ‘Hey, if you don’t mind me saying, I don’t think you are very funny.’ He said’ Do you know any Tom Jones? Why don’t you go and sing because you are not very funny?’ So I remember going on and just singing Rock Around the Clock and a load of old Elvis songs just so I could get paid. This is back in the day when you’d arrive in the middle of nowhere, find a phonebox ring the agent and they would tell you there and then if you are working or not and then you’d have to find some digs for the night so, I know who Archie Rice is and that is him. What do you think audiences will take away from this version of the Entertainer? Or what do you hope they will take away from it? Shane: Well we hope that there will be part of the audience that will come knowing the original piece but if you have never seen it then it doesn’t matter because it stands up on its own, I think it’s fair to say isn’t that right Sean? Sean: Yeah I think it’s a more accessible version of the play rather than the original play and it’s shorter and I think these days you have to remember people want to get home 20 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
by half ten and that they are probably coming on a week night and working the next day so watching a three act play that finishes at eleven; it’s just harder, it’s less appealing. And we moved some of the scenes around, we have changed some of the songs, so that it feels more of its period, the early 80’s. And I guess that it’s an attempt to try and reach across the foot lights and hope that the audience enjoys a really accessible, entertaining, classic play. You’ve managed to seamlessly move between working on stage and on TV, was that always part of the plan? Shane: It was never my plan when I started, I mean I started very young as an actor, 1978 or 1979 I was in Grange Hill and then I was accepted into the National Youth Theatre in 1980. I was just 15 and I didn’t do it, because I just finished doing TIE, Theatre in Education, I was touring with a theatre group, and because I grew up in a women’s refuge so I used to go with a lot of children to holiday camp as a kid. I remember going to a holiday camp and thinking I wouldn’t mind doing that when I’m older; being a Blue Coat at Pontins so that’s what I did. Even as a ten year old I’d call bingo, I would sing with the bands, I’d do the raffles, so I was used to being on the microphone and someone said ‘Oh you are really good at compering, why don’t you go to Spain, there’s a comparing job in Torremolinos. So, I did. After that I got a stand-up routine together, realised that I could make £50 a night as opposed to £50 a week as a compere and then
It’s interesting because it brings me back to ‘The Entertainer’ again. I remember calling myself an entertainer in the 80’s, and it was a dirty word because immediately you thought of someone on the end of the pier, your Russ Abbotts and Bernard Mannings. It wasn’t until Robbie Williams, after he left Take That, at the height of his fame, a worldwide solo artist described himself as an entertainer and all of a sudden, every artist, even traditional actors would describe themselves as an entertainer. For me the umbrella is an entertainer, underneath that you may be an actor, singer, dancer, juggler, mime act but you are still foremost an entertainer. I had a long chat, hate to name drop, with Judi Dench and she agreed with me. But then I remember being called a celebrity in the 80’s and it was a badge of honour to be called a celebrity. To be called a celebrity now feels like a dirty word. Archie Rice is an entertainer but back then it represented something very different than it does now and that’s why I love playing Archie because I go back to what I know. I know exactly who he is, I know exactly where his heart is, where his head is, where his stand up is, where his attitude is, why he is doing it. I know everything about him.
The Entertainer will run at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton 7-12 October and Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre 15-19 October. For tickets and to find out more visit www.theentertainerplay.co.uk

SOOooO... ON TREND
BIRDS OF A FEATHER Undoubtedly one of the most prominent trends to come out of the autumn winter 2019 shows was feathers. They were shown in various forms, some extravagant and some more subtle
Feather-trimmed satin sandals, Gianvito Rossi, £795
GIVE IT SOME SHOULDER Shoulders were big on the autumn winter 2019 catwalks, but not in a harsh, padded, Dallas eat your heart out kind of way, with Oh so Eighties! River Island. designers instead adorning dresses and shirts with exaggerated, puffy shoulder detail. SUPER SIZE YOUR BAG Although bags came in tiny form Rajah leather too, there was a growing trend tote, Gucci, for the enormous tote (which £1,770 I personally love!! Bigger the bag the smaller you look!) Some handbags were almost the size of overnight bags, carried under the arm or slung over the shoulder. This is probably one of the most useful trends of the season – for once, you will be able to house everything you need. Victoria Beckham and Rosie Huntingdon Whiteley have already been spotted sporting the trend.
George. Coat, £30,
I’ve picked just a few of the top looks and trends you’ll be seeing in the stores which are hopefully relatable that you can make work into your wardrobe...
MELLOW YELLOW Well there’s actually nothing mellow about this season's yellow that’s for sure! If you dread heading into the grey, winter months and have a wardrobe to match, then this season you might want to add a pop of yellow. The colour was everywhere, whether you want to inject just a touch to an ensemble or try a head-to-toe look, there's plenty of inspiration awaiting you. Just make sure you choose a tone that works with your skin or stick to it in accessory form (I’m dying for the yellow Manolo Blahnik Hangisis!) ked Yellow Chec
There is quite simply a whole host of new trends to have on your radar for this new season. While bright and sunny yellows seem to be the colour of the new season seen on most catwalks, feathers are certainly the fancy touch you'll be adding to your wardrobe and perfect for the party season ahead. Enormous bags were everywhere whilst shoulders got the puffy treatment.
ROOOOAAARRRRRR Leopard print makes a comeback year after year and whether you dare to wear it head-to-toe or just experiment with accessories, there are plenty of stylish ways to wear the animal print. We’ve seen it in full swing for spring summer and it’s definitely not going anywhere for Autumn Winter. Balance out a midi skirt with a laidback white tee and trainers. For a more conservative look, team midi length dresses with a classic court shoe. For a subtle dip into the trend, try a leopard belt or pair of shoes. This classic print easily adds interest to neutral outfits.
Beige Faux Fur Trimmed Bag, Dune London.
BUTTERSCOTCH BEIGE It might have been a big trend for SS19, heavily adopted by the street stylers and fashion bloggers, but there is no denying that not-soboring beige is going to be everywhere again. Caramel, chestnut, chocolate, biscuit: one of next season’s favourite colour palettes looks as

delicious as it sounds. A natural progression from last season’s adoption of beige, designers opted for warm and easy-to-wear shades. Shown mostly in a head-to-toe look, Its an easy one to adopt and a trend that will stand the test of time so, think about investment pieces (like a camel Max Mara winter coat.) HIGHLIGHTER HEELS If you're a fan of the statement accessory, then look no further than autumn's big shoe trend: the highlighter heel. Bright-coloured court shoes look to be a favourite ahead of the new season. Day or evening, the catwalks proved that they might just be the perfect addition to your officewear too (especially if you wear a lot of black). If you still struggle with your winter wardrobe you know where to find me. x Malibu Beach Sandal £49.00, Office.

WINTER SKIN: GUY GROOMING
MAKEUP FOR MEN Gone are the days of pinching your girlfriend’s concealer to cover the blemish that just won’t go away, or even grabbing your mum’s moisturiser. We’re onto the next level of male grooming – makeup specifically designed for men. Back in April, singer-songwriter John Mayer posted a makeup tutorial on Instagram, since then the industry for man-friendly makeup has skyrocketed – we have surpassed the age of sneaking around – we embrace it. Since then, Chanel has launched a dedicated eyebrow pencil, tinted foundation and lip balm for blokes, along with brands like Clinique and Tom Ford bringing out their own ranges as well. HYALURONIC ACID It’s the ingredient that is constantly cropping up in women’s skincare products, although it has taken quite a while for it to transition over into men’s skincare. The benefits of hyaluronic acid are a necessity in a man’s skincare routine. Manual’s Mr Moisturiser is jam packed with hydration through hyaluronic acid and allantoin – this helps smooth, protect and regenerate the skin. Mr Moisturiser is sulphate, paraben and alcohol free – which are all of the things can could cause you to breakout and enlarge pores. 90’S HAIR VIBES Get the bowls and clippers back out because 90’s hair styles are back in the game. It’s time to release your inner 90’s Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. The Bluebeards Revenge Sea Salt Spray is the perfect product to help contain longer locks. The spray has been specially
designed with sea salt minerals to give men a natural look that boasts all of the volume, texture and wave seen in the hair of coastline junkies, without the sticky feeling. Featuring a classic, masculine fragrance, it offers bland hair a crisp hold that can be reworked throughout the day. Barber, Vincent Quinn from Hard Grind barbers has spoken about the influx of requests for 90’s hairstyles: “Hairstyles like the bowl cut, the wedge cut and classic curtains are very much in trend for youngsters at the moment; especially
when paired with loosely turned-up jeans and a FILA jacket.” He goes on to say, “Barbers are better and more technically trained now too, so these cuts are being treated professionally and adapted to avoid the ‘cut at home in the dark’ vibe.” BECOME YOUR OWN DERMATOLOGIST Why not treat your skin to a high-tech LED laser facial or eye mask? After recent studies suggesting that starring at your phone screens can cause premature aging – the effects can be maintainable through blue LED light therapy. With these little tools, you can treat congested skin from the privacy of your own bathroom as often as you need, without ever having to make an appointment again. Written by Maddy Ireland.

MOTORS.
PRACTICAL PERFO Remember those carefree days when all you needed from a car were two seats, somewhere to throw a weekend bag and a couple of hundred horses under the bonnet? Fast forward a few years though and add in a couple of kids, a dog and the detritus of family life and that sporty little two seater has had to be relegated to the back of the garage in favour of something much more practical. But practical can be sporty too, at least that’s what Mercedes Benz have to say with the release of this new Shooting Brake version of its CLA coupe.
Mercedes-Benz introduced the first generation of the CLA Shooting Brake in 2015: a five-door, clearly a Coupé in terms of its proportions, and yet with considerable effective load space thanks to the roof which continues through to the rear and the rear door. From the striking sharknose at the front of the vehicle to the clean edge with accentuated surfaces, the design is athletic right down to the muscular rear. It’s this rear that increases the CLA Shooting Brake’s functionality offering much more space for the spontaneity of family life be it on an extended shopping spree or for sports and outdoor activities where space is required. The new CLA Shooting Brake is also a designer car, which in the first instance is emotionally 30 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
appealing on account of its proportions: a long bonnet, compact greenhouse with coupé-like windowlines, muscular shoulders over the rear wheel arch and crouched rear, which clearly shows its sports car genes. The outline of the frameless windows is identical to the outline of the Coupé’s up to the B-pillar. Behind it, the windowline runs considerably higher, which makes entering for rear passengers easier. Elongated into the rear, it tapers off into an acute angle. Opt for the AMG model and the distinctive front end tilted forward and the elongated bonnet with striking powerdomes form dynamic style elements. The flat headlamps, the low-slung bonnet and the diamond radiator grille with the central star, mark the typical Mercedes-Benz sports car look. The narrow two-part rear lamps and the licence plate positioned in the bumper are typical for the GT rear with a flush transition between the rear bumper and the tailgate. The rear view is dominated by the rear apron with a diffuser insert and four vertical fins, the AMG airflow break-away edge in the vehicle colour on the roof spoiler and the two round tailpipe trims on the left and right. The twopiece, narrow tail lamps and the number plate housed in the bumper make the tail end look especially wide.
From a side view, the aerodynamically optimised 18-inch light-alloy wheels in a 5-twin-spoke design (19-inch optionally available) and the dynamically sculpted side sill panels catch the eye. The outline of the frameless windows is identical to the outline of the Coupés itself up to the B-pillar. Behind it, the window line runs considerably higher, which makes entering easier for rear passengers and facilitates the larger load compartment capacity.
Buyers can style up their CLA with a number of design packages including an AMG Night Package with design features in black, such as front splitter and black chromed tailpipe trims. Inside, just like the four-door CLA Coupé, the Shooting Brake puts its own spin on Mercedes’ current fluid design language and as per the new A class, turns the interior into a coolly designed user interface for intelligent digital technology. Frameless doors open to an interior with a high-tech ambience where quality and elegance meet fully digital displays. Characteristic features of the “35” models include sports seats with upholstery black leather. The AMG-specific centre console in high-gloss black with standard touchpad has additional
ORMER
buttons that control the 3-stage ESP®, manual transmission mode and the optional AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive damping system. The characteristic, sporty AMG ambience is also underscored by the sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs; floor mats in black with AMG lettering and insert in a nubuck-leather look; the roof liner in black fabric and the AMG door sills in brushed stainless steel at the front with “AMG” lettering. The three air vents are incorporated here, and their sporty turbine look appeals to the senses even without the lighting. This CLA is aimed at customers for whom, just a few years ago, Mercedes Benz was not the first thing that came to mind when they were looking to buy a car. You’ll find the interior is technology packed with intelligent interior assistants and refined voice recognition making the operation of ever more functions more natural and much simpler. Great emphasis is placed on individualisation with an increasing and diverse range of apps and services, which can be downloaded from Mercedes me depending on your own preferences. The combination of sporty design and sophisticated details is also featured in the MBUX infotainment system with its innovative
operating and display concept. MBUX creates an even closer connection between the vehicle, driver and passengers. Emotionally appealing presentations underline the clear control structure and feature brilliant maximumresolution 3D graphics. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a Widescreen Cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design.
transmission and the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive resulting in powerful acceleration of 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds The new Mercedes Benz CLA Shooting Brake goes on sale this autumn with the AMG version starting at £30,664. Find out more at www.mercedesbenz.co.uk
The customer can choose between the three AMG display styles “Classic”, “Sport” and “Supersport” for the instrument cluster. The “Supersport” mode is particularly striking with a central, round rev counter and additional information presented in the form of bars to the left and right of the rev counter: with a three-dimensional perspective, they reach far into the background to an artificial horizon. All that extra space doesn’t compromise the car’s sporting characteristics as, along with the CLA Coupé, the CLA Shooting Brake features a wider track and which offers a lower centre of gravity. The top-of-the range engine will be the agile high-torque 2.0-litre four-cylinder which delivers 306 hp, variably distributed to the front and rear axle via the 7-speed dual-clutch dluxe-magazine.co.uk 31

golden days of autumn are coming to the Gardens
The mornings are noticeably darker for longer and there’s definitely a feeling that summer has come to a close. That means one thing: we’ll soon be treated to the beautiful golden tones of autumn. The Gardens look beautiful in any season, of course, but if you haven’t yet visited our newest addition – the Macmillan Cancer Support show garden, which was at Gardeners’ World Live at the NEC earlier this year – it’s well worth having a look. September is the time when our indoor team will be potting spring bulbs in the nursery. We’ll be filling pots with beautiful hyacinths, daffodils, tulips and other colourful flowers that herald the new growing season. The outside team will also be preparing for spring by planting hundreds of bulbs in the
bedding displays, as well as planting thousands of annuals for welcome winter colour. It’s also this time of year when we start to choose and order the 10,000 to 12,000 bedding plants for the next 18 months – it’s a great job and we’re always planning ahead! We gardeners always love something for nothing, so this month, divide herbaceous perennials. By lifting them and cutting them into smaller sections with a spade, it helps to rejuvenate the plant. Don’t forget to water them in well. It’s a great way to double – or triple – the number of plants you have, filling in those little gaps that always appear in the borders.
Other things to be getting on with this month include: •
Clean cold frames and greenhouses.
•
Net ponds to reduce the debris that will fall into the water.
•
Feed and deadhead containers and hanging baskets to ensure they continue to thrive until the first frosts.
•
Prune late-summer flowering shrubs and climbing / rambling roses once they have finished flowering.
•
Harvest seeds – store them in a paper bag and make sure you label them!
•
Order bare root shrubs and trees now, for planting in November.

I’m excited for my clients, teams across all of our offices, friends and family to join in toasting and exploring everything property, from design, interiors, gardens, eco to project management under one roof. I will be providing personal 30-minute appointment slots across four days slots and will also be interviewed by Kevin McCloud in the Grand Theatre on what makes a world class property brand.” says Bobby Singh cofounder of Love Your Postcode. It’s an exciting partnership for the Birmingham brand which has rapidly built a reputation as strong as its address book and specialises in off market property sales under the mantle Performance&™. Bobby continued, “We have an extensive private client list due to our out of home reach. Our award winning model works both on the sell and buy side without any conflict of interest. Unlike other agencies, it firstly works with a fully vetted client list and as a last resort property portal. So brand loyalty
certainly reaps rewards. The performance aspect is measured on time, from instruction to completion, with required prices being achieved 99% of the time. We find that exclusivity and correct brand partnerships create premium outcomes that other agencies will find difficult to match. A 28 day asking price guarantee, strongly differentiates our proposition.” Based on the Channel 4 TV series, GDL is presented by design specialist Kevin McCloud and will be packed with over 400 different exhibitors. There will be a range of informative talks and features running throughout the week which visitors are welcome to take part in - the first of which is popular service Ask an Expert which will be returning to GDL this year, giving visitors the opportunity to consult specialists across a range of home improvement areas. In the Grand Theatre, host Kevin McCloud will be joined by a range of industry experts and recent ‘Grand Designers’ from the latest Grand Design series, to provide a series of informational seminars on various topics. The Grand Interiors hall offers different unique and sophisticated ways to furnish and complete a project – visitors will be able to browse hundreds of brands and products that are not readily available on the high street. Meanwhile, the Grand Kitchens and Grand Bathrooms halls will highlight some of the most cutting-edge products and designs for these two important parts of the home. Finally, the Grand Gardens section will be particularly interesting for those with an interest in the outdoors. There will be a selection of brands on show from a variety of outdoor areas, including cooking, swimming pools, hot tubs, garden buildings and landscaping. the park boasts lush greenery and in Winter, there’s likely the park is likely to be covered in snow and the waterfalls frozen. The orange and browns of Autumn are also a hit as are the fresh spring days with rushing waterfalls from the melting snow. May, June, September and October are considered the best months. July and August are the busiest months, so avoid if you dislike the crowds.

THE OLD CITY WALLS The old city walls of Dubrovnik are one of the city’s best-known features. Built-in the 10th century and modified in the 13th and 14th centuries, these tough walls - as high as six metres and up to six metres thick - provided a solid defence against invaders back in the day. Game of Thrones fans will be excited to learn that a number of scenes were shot in, around and on top of the walls. TRAVEL NEWS. EASYJET ANNOUNCES NEW ROUTE FROM BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT easyJet, Europe’s leading airline has announced that it will introduce a new route, starting in the spring from Birmingham Airport to Glasgow. easyJet’s new domestic route starts on 29th March 2020 and will operate 13 times a week between the two cities. The short flight is expected to be especially popular amongst those travelling on business and commuters travelling between the two major UK cities. easyJet started flying from Birmingham in December 2007 with its route to Geneva and has since added services to Belfast.
THOSE WERE THE DAYS… BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT CELEBRATES ITS 80TH BIRTHDAY On the 8th July Birmingham Airport marked eighty years since HRH The Duchess of Kent officially opened Birmingham Airport, then known as Elmdon. Over the past eight decades, the airport has handled some 275 million passengers and grown to serve 13 million people each year. Just two months after the opening on a rainy day on the 8th July 1939, the Second World War broke out, the Air Ministry requisitioned the airport and all civil flying ended. However, on the 8th July 1946, exactly seven years to the day, the airport reopened for civil flying. By the early 70s it was handling one million passengers a year and in 1981 development started for a new terminal on the opposite side of the runway, where it operates still today. On the 30th May 1984, Her Majesty the Queen opened the new facilities which had capacity for three million passengers and in the first year of the new operation saw record numbers of passengers. Today, Birmingham Airport serves 150 direct flights and a further 340 onward connections world-wide, supporting 8000 on-site jobs. In the last 10 years alone, it has invested more than £300m to develop its infrastructure to enlarge the terminal, build a new pier and air traffic control tower as well as additional car parks, hangars, hotels and extending the runway to enable aircraft to fly further. The airport is now about to embark on a 15 year, half a billion-pound investment programme that will transform the terminal site even further.
The flights from Birmingham to Glasgow will operate all year round and easyJet expects to carry 180,000 passengers in the first year alone operating on its A319 and A320 aircraft. WIZZ AIR ANNOUNCES NEW ROUTE FROM BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT Wizz Air have launched two new routes from Birmingham Airport to Poland; Poznań, Poland’s fifth largest city and Krakow - the seventh Wizz Air route to operate from Birmingham Airport. Sticky Toffee Apple & Pecan Cake With velvety, rich caramel, crunchy, nutty roasted pecans & sweet apple, this is the perfect dessert for Autumn entertaining.. All you need to do is add ice cream and enjoy! Originally from Nottingham, Cameron Lamb is a Patissier who has always had a passion for baking! After graduating from college he started in the midlands as a pastry chef before before moving to London to pursue his dream of becoming a world class pâtissier. After attending worshops by master pâtissier Eric Lanlard he was approached to work at his Patisserie in London, Cake – Boy. INGREDIENTS: For the cake: 170g chopped dates 1 tsp bi-carbonate of soda 75g unsalted butter (softened) 120g Dark muscovado sugar 2 eggs 175g self raising flour 2 tbsp black treacle 1 small apple 80g chopped roasted pecans 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp salt For the pecan praline: 100g caster sugar 80g chopped roasted pecans For the caramel sauce: 100g unsalted butter 100g light muscovado sugar 100ml double cream
METHOD: Pre-heat your oven to 180° (160° fan), then grease and line your cake tin. Start by pouring 160ml of boiling water over the chopped dates. Into this mix add the bicarb and set aside to go soft. Slice the apple into little cubes (you can keep the skin on), then put this to one-side. 40 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Using a free standing mixer or a hand whisk, cream together the butter with the sugar. Once fluffy and paler in colour, add the black treacle and vanilla and mix it in. Once combined, add the eggs one by one until incorporated. When incorporated fold in the date/water mixture. Now gently fold in the flour, cinnamon & salt. Followed by the chopped pecans and apple. Turn the mixture out into the tin and bake for around 50 minutes to 1 hour, or insert a skewer into the centre to make sure it comes out clean. Once baked, leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before turning out. At this point you can either leave it as just the cake, or turn it into a show stopping dessert! For the dessert I trimmed the edges off the cake and sliced it into 4. Follow the steps below for the Pecan Praline and Caramel Sauce.
a saucepan and bring to the boil over a medium heat. When you have a pale caramel colour, add the chopped pecans and stir in. Continue to cook for a little longer, stirring until you have achieved a nice golden caramel colour. Once ready, tip the mixture onto the tray and leave to cool for at least 30 minutes to harden. When it has set, using a rolling pin, smash the praline into crumbs. Caramel Sauce: This can be made just before you want to serve the desserts as it's quick to make and will be nice and hot. Alternatively you can make this in advance if you prefer, and re-heat the sauce just before you serve it up. Cut the butter into cubes and place into a saucepan along with the sugar.
Pecan Praline:
Place over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved, allow to boil for a couple of minutes.
Line a baking sheet with greaseproof paper and then set to one-side.
Then add the cream and stir, once all combined its ready to serve!
Place the sugar and 30ml of water into
Makes a 6” Square cake or 4 desserts

REVIEW : RUDY’S PIZZA
INDICO Welcome to the new kid on the block, who has just knocked it out of the ball park. We’re talking about Rudy’s Pizza, an independent Neapolitan Pizzeria in the heart of Birmingham. They follow the traditions and artistry of pizza from Naples – the birthplace of pizza – making fresh dough daily and baking them in a stone oven for just 60 seconds! The result is super soft base with melt in the mouth mozzarella toppings. We visited on a packed Friday night and the place was really buzzing. It’s a large space on Bennetts Hill that use to be the old Spanish restaurant, Amantia. It has an expansive industrial look, which intentionally looks half finished.
Our Street food fave Indico in Shirley has announced its launching a second site at the Mailbox. Taking the spot of the old Handmade Burger over-looking the canal, the décor will showcase its own brand of vibrant Bollywood vibes, artwork and graffiti. Can’t wait for this independent authentic street food brand to hit the city centre this autumn. Expect Indico’s staples such as chaats and curries that will be cooked fresh each day and an extensive vegetarian menu. There will also be a big focus on the cocktails.
The pizza maestros take centre stage as they work up a sweat making the dough and there’s a small bar at the back, ideal to wait at as there is no reservation system. A quick glance of the menu and we had decided. No messing about, we started with a classic caprese salad made with buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes and fresh basil and then swiftly proceeded to devour 4 different pizzas! We ordered the carni and the salami but the Calabrese was the firm favourite - tomato, fior di latte, basil and spicy n’duja sausage (soft calabrian sausage that melts into the pizza – beware, it’s got a kick to it!) Soft and sour and politely charred, the crust is light and airy and you just fold in your hands and chomp away. We slavered on the chilli oil, because we’re Indian and we love it and then swapped each other’s pizzas around the table. The pizzas were large and there was a lot leftover, but we still had room to round off our meal with a lovely coupe of hazelnut affogato. Rudy’s has everything you dream about from a relaxed, neighbourhood pizzeria - great pizza, friendly staff and a great soundtrack. Probably one of the best pizza places we have been to in a long time. 42 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

REVIEW: Marmalade at BIRMINGHAM REP
The hottest day ever recorded in the UK provided the perfect atmosphere for a relaxed cocktail and canapes soiree at Birmingham’s REP, celebrating the launch of the new-look Marmalade bar and restaurant. Showcasing a range of dishes suitable for all palates - we were invited along to sample the menu and experience Birmingham REP’s new look space for ourselves. THE FOOD We were first greeted by wonderful trays of canapes featuring some unique flavours of shredded duck and marmalade – it worked amazingly well. For those that fancied a meat free option there were vegan mini tartlets with a refreshing salsa. Marmalade also offer a range of small plates that are perfect for a light bite before a theatre showing or simply as a starter. We were loving how well catered the team were to all dietary requirements, from various meat options, fish, even vegan and gluten free. One of our personal favourites was a Fava Bean Patty with a tomatillo chutney and dukka spices. In every bite you could taste each individual ingredient working together to create a divine sensuous experience. When they brought the mains out, it felt like Christmas had come early. Displayed in beautiful rustic blue and green crockery, the food was an indulgence for the senses. Supplying us with selections of Sweet Potato Thai curry, mange tout, bok choi, shiitake mushrooms, coconut crisp &
fragrant rice (both vegan and gluten free) as well as Fillet of Sea Bass with potato and spring onions ragout & sauce vierge - the list would go on forever. The staff were brilliant offering up all the dishes for us to try – it was fair to say we weren’t going to go hungry! Of course, we had to save the best meal until last, the scrumptious desserts were good enough to convince anyone to ditch the diet! From the likes of Chocolate & Coffee Mousse with Chantilly cream and pecan praline, gluten free Lemon Tart with lime zest and raspberry sorbet and Blueberry Frangipane with vanilla crème fraiche – what’s not to love?! If you fancy treating yourself or a loved one to a glorious afternoon at the theatre, why not try Marmalade’s afternoon tea packages? For £12.95 you can have an assortment of sandwiches, cakes and scones – not to mention vegan alternatives to the package, which were delicious! THE DRINKS If you are after a cocktail in the sunshine, then Marmalade is the perfect place to go. Set in the newly revamped Centenary Square, you can sip on a cocktail while watching the brilliant new water feature just outside the restaurant. With contemporary outdoor seating and staff always on hand to help with any needs – this is the perfect position to people watch. We managed to have the brilliant opportunity to talk with some of the
distilleries that are suppliers for Marmalade, one of whom was ODK Mixers – an Italian brand of syrups. We spoke to one of their reps who explained that all the lemons are grown within a one-mile radius of their factory in Sicily, whereby they pick and squeeze the lemons the same day. We managed to grab one of their lovely lemon ice teas which was perfectly refreshing on the hottest day of the year. THE INTERIOR Rustic wooden tables and copper hanging lights was a modern vibe for the newly refurbished restaurant. Marmalade have fitted beautifully printed feature walls – perfect for those that want to get the perfect snap for Instagram - not to mention all the quirky accessories! You can relax into the large Chesterfield style booths, or big blue armchairs - comfort is key at Marmalade. VERDICT: Now under control of the in-house REP team, it’s their firm intention to make Marmalade a destination bar and restaurant in its own right; a place that’s good enough to go to irrespective of whether you are going to the theatre or not. They’ve got all the right ingredients and we think they’ve pulled it off – especially with its incredible location overlooking the fountains of Centenary Square. A real sweet treat. OŠ
Three years after suffering from a serious hand injury at the peak of his career, guitarist MILOŠ is back with his just released fourth studio album and a UK tour including Birmingham Town Hall on the 21st January. What was the inspiration for your new tour and album? This tour and the album are a very personal scrapbook of music that will always have a special meaning to me – from Bach to the Beatles, Granados to Portishead, Piazzolla to Radiohead. It comes after one of the biggest challenges of my life - suffering a serious physical injury and mental burnout - and the programme is a musical reflection on that time and on my long journey back to full health. It is the music I love above all else. When did you start playing the guitar and why? Were you born into a musical family? I was born in Montenegro during the Balkan wars, in a very happy but isolated environment. My parents aren’t musicians but it was always the thing I was most passionate about. I thought that playing the guitar was special because it made me instantly connect with people. I gave my first proper public performance in Paris when I was 14 years old and I will remember it for the rest of my life – being there felt as if for the first time I was seeing life in full colour and hence I knew it was what I wanted to do forever. You sustained a devastating hand injury a few years ago – what happened? It was a very difficult period of my life – both professionally and personally. I developed a repetitive strain like hand injury, which quickly spiralled into bigger issues. There were moments I thought and was told I would never be able to play again. It took time and a huge support network to heal and recover – I needed to rest, rebuild my self-belief and re-evaluate my relationship with music and the world I was part of. It was the most important lesson of my adult life and I now feel much stronger and better than ever before. Who are your musical inspirations? As a teenager, John Williams was everything to me - his peerless sound aesthetic, projection and clarity will forever be a huge inspiration and I learned so much by listening to his recordings. I’m inspired by other classical guitarists, their life and work –
Leo Brouwer, José Luis Merlin, Máximo Diego Pujol, Francisco Tárrega, Segovia – most of whom appear on my new album. And I’m also inspired by the musicians I meet, the conductors I work with, composers that write for me – it’s a privilege to connect with people and discover everyone’s unique gift, not just in music, but in every other way too. What was it like selling out the Royal Albert Hall in 2012? You were the first ever classical guitarist to have performed a solo recital there! In my imaginary world, when I was a teenager in Montenegro, the Royal Albert Hall was the stage of my dreams. So even before I actually did it, I had played that concert hundreds of times in my head. I was of course very nervous before-hand but mostly I was just insanely excited and focused. It was a huge moment and to this day the best thing I have ever done. What is it that makes the guitar so special to you? It’s not an accident that the guitar is the most popular instrument in the world. Whether classical or pop guitar - there is a truly special quality about it. In the classical world, however, the guitar is still fighting for its place, although in the last decade things have changed dramatically. At a time when classical music is searching for new audiences, the guitar is the perfect vehicle to bridge the gap as it sits so perfectly between the worlds of classical and mainstream. You’ll be playing some music by the Beatles in this concert – why do you love their music? The Beatles were a bit of an artistic departure for me and through their work and influence I found the sound I had always searched for. It’s music that has stood the test of time, and which will stay for many years to come. On this tour, I hope that everyone will be able to find their own favourites in such an eclectic programme. From Bach to the Beatles, Schubert or Paul Simon, it is all music to me, and I love it. MILOŠ performs at Birmingham Town Hall on 21 January. Packed with unforgettable disco-era classics from Stayin’ Alive to Disco Inferno and Boogie Shoes to Tragedy, this unforgettable story follows Tony Manero, a young man who escapes the harsh realities of working class life in Brooklyn by embarking on a reckless yet thrilling road to dancing success. Starring Casualty’s and Street Dance 3D’s Richard Winsor, this explosive live show combines one of the best-selling movie soundtracks of all time with hot new choreography by Olivier Award winner Bill Deamer. Then from 2-12 October, as the nights draw out ahead of Halloween, the Belgrade Theatre, Selladoor, Matthew Townshend and Perth Theatre present a chilling new version of Mary Shelley’s Gothic masterpiece Frankenstein. Adapted for the stage by acclaimed writer Rona Munro, this powerful production places Shelley herself amidst the action, wrestling with her own creation and with the stark realities facing radical young women then and now. Finally, John Osborne’s “landmark, state-of-thenation play” The Entertainer gets a vibrant new setting for the very first time, showing in Coventry 15-19 October. Relocating the action to the 1980s at the outset of the Falklands War, Sean O’Connor’s adaptation stars Shane Richie as Archie Rice, a washed-up comic struggling to find his place amidst the rise of alternative comedy and a shifting political landscape. Chosen by Michael Billington as one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, The Entertainer is presented by Curve, Anthology Theatre and Simon Friend Entertainment. Tickets to all of these shows and more are available to book now by calling the box office on 024 7655 3055 or visiting www. belgrade.co.uk where prices are cheaper. He has such amazing on-stage presence and charisma; coupled with strong vocals and who doesn’t love an old school Oasis sing-a-long?” DEEPTI PANDYA, SALES EXECUTIVE: “I’m super excited to see the pop princess that is Ariana Grande on 14th September. She’s so talented and puts on an amazing show – it is not one to miss!” SAM GREEN, SALES EXECUTIVE: “It’s got to be Jack Whitehall for me on 15th November. circus & CELEBRATIONS AT HIPPODROME
The international phenomenon Circus 1903 brings a host of amazing acts, daredevil feats, high wire stunts and lifesize animal puppets as it takes audiences back to the golden age of the travelling show. The extravaganza, which comes to Birmingham for the first time, is a perfect centrepiece for the Hippodrome’s 120th birthday celebrations because the theatre was launched as a circus venue back in 1899.

“It’s like we’re recreating history with the sights, the sounds and the spectacle that launched the Hippodrome all those years ago and bringing them back. Now we’re paying homage to that golden age with our show in 2019. As a local lad, to bring a show which has toured the world back to the Hippodrome at this very special time makes me feel very honoured and very lucky.”
The show’s name pays homage to the age of the historic Barnum and Bailey circus company which launched the extravaganza known as The Greatest Show on Earth. This is the same P T Barnum brought to life by Hugh Jackman in the cinema blockbuster The Greatest Showman. Although Circus 1903 pre-dates Jackman’s film, Richard says the movie’s popularity has helped re-ignite interest in the golden age of circus.
Richard became part of the creative team behind Circus 1903 at its very beginning, working with director Neil Dorward who he had first known when they were students together at the Italia Conti Academy in London. The two had built up successful careers in theatre before collaborating on a circus show in China. Then Neil had the idea for Circus 1903 - and he and the team had a clear vision for the show.
“I absolutely loved the film and, having worked so closely with our production, I was curious to see what they would do with it,” says Richard. “I think it has pulled up the curtain on a piece of history and it’s definitely sparked people’s imagination so they want to see that kind of show for themselves. I think people have seen the film and thought ‘that looks wonderful and amazing and breath-taking’ – and it is!”
“We were really keen to transport audiences back to the golden age of circus when the circus was the biggest attraction of its time,” Richard explains. “There was no TV, no cinema, no theatres, no sports games – circus was a combination of all those elements. We wanted to capture that bygone era.
“I am so excited to be bringing Circus 1903 to the Hippodrome,” he says. “It’s such a beautiful theatre and I’ve always loved having the opportunity to come back home. My career is predominantly in London these days but my heart is definitely still in the West Midlands.
“So we deliberately shied away from anything which would be too futuristic. We wanted to take it back to basics and for our audience to have an appreciation for these amazing circus acts. There are no gimmicks, no special effects, no filter – what you are seeing is the trapeze artist balancing on that high wire or the juggler spinning those clubs. You are watching a lifetime of dedication packed into an act of a few minutes. Peaky Blinders Season Launch Photography by Edwin Ladd, Jas Sansi, Nick Robinson
“And we wanted to ensure it was lavish. Money was so tight in the 1900s and yet circus costumes and sets were so extravagant and flamboyant - we really wanted to capture that with exquisite costume design and sumptuous sets.”
“I hope that people go away with the biggest smiles on their faces having been thoroughly entertained and mind-boggled with what they’ve just seen. There’s something in it for everyone because of the plethora of acts – there’s humour but also spectacle. We set out to entertain people – just as circus did back in the day.” Circus 1903 comes to Birmingham Hippodrome on October 25 – November 2.
